Don't let the ice cream parlor decor fool you...this place is a Chinese food mecca for Mchenry County! Given the very few dining establishments on the east side of Algonquin, it is a tremendous blessing to have such an incredible restaurant as Gourmet House. Even if there were more Asian restaurants nearby, this would still outshine the rest. My family enjoys this place so much that it is a Friday night staple in our house. I have sampled several of their offerings and have yet to be disappointed. Typically I default to the Mongolian Chicken because it is SO good! The staff are also very friendly. My new go-to place for egg rolls! I thought that the place i used to go to in Fox River Grove had the best egg rolls in the world, but then i tried Gourmet House and everything changed! I am a little embarrassed to admit, since i tried them i have been going back at least once a week! Yay! Finally a decent Chinese place that serves your basic "Americanized" deep fried and smothered in sauce goodness. We ordered: Sesame Chicken, Chicken Fried Rice &Chicken Egg Foo Young. Everything was good. We will be ordering from them again. We placed the order online and my husband was able to pick up through a convenient drive-thru pick up window. The best part... No Chinese Food "hangover". You know, that horrible full feeing that sets in immediately after taking your last bite.... You retreat to the couch and wonder why you ate so much only to notice that it somehow goes away just as quickly as is came and now has you rooting around in the takeout container for more? By far the best affordable Chinese in the area, and by the name and appearance of the restaurant you wouldn't even guess it until you step inside. I took my mother here with one of her coworkers while they were visiting Crystal Lake on business. It's got your typical extensive Chinese menu, some great appetizers, and a small bar to boot. I guess I am surprised at all the good reviews because what we received this evening was definitely not a 4-5 experience We ordered: Shrimp Lettuce Wraps Crab rangoons Firecracker Chicken Fried Rice with Pork Chicken Lo Mein First, they forgot the lettuce wraps so we had to call. 15 minutes of trying to explain we received some stuff in a container but no wraps, they sent them out. They were ok The crab rangoons are standard frozen variety The chicken Lo Mein was standard. The fried rice ok as well The firecracker chicken. Ugh. Overpowering taste of lemon juice in the sauce. NO punch at all unless you get an occasional red pepper flake. The chicken is tender considering it is deep fried but it does not save the dish. Such a shame read more

I've tried Gourmet House twice and was disappointed both times. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was great but my meals lacked flavor. After hearing so many good things from friends and neighbors I was very excited to give it a try. My first visit I wrote off as possibly a bad day in the kitchen, but the second visit, nearly 2 years later, left me with the same feeling of disappointment. I even asked them to spice things up a bit, and all I got was extra red peppers that just made it hotter, not better. I basically got through my meal by saturating it with soy sauce. I went here a week ago with my boyfriend, and we've been searching for some good chinese cuisine. I heard from yelp and a few other people that this place was worth a shot. The interior is decent, but it reminds me of how an IHop would decorate; lazy and too country. It didn't fit the 'Chinese' gourmet to me whatsoever. The service was fine; no complaints but no extraordinary good service. We ordered the Walnut Shrimp, Roasted Duck and a side of the fried rice. The fried rice is the reason why I would come back here again. It might have been because of the large portions of meat (shrimp, beef, etc), but it was incredibly good. The roasted duck was incredibly disappointing. It was fried and too dry. I wouldn't suggest getting it. The Walnut Shrimp was pretty good, I must say. I would get it again. Food is amazing and prices are great! My husband and I tried hot and sour soup which was very good. We loved the crab rangoon especially since it came with Wasabi mustard (ahhh-mazing) and homemade sweet sauce. We then shared low mei with shrimp and shrimp with lobster sauce. I pulled up the online ordering website and placed an order of crab Rangoon, potstickers, chicken with cashews, and beef fried rice. The food was delivered fairly quickly and was still hot. I tried this place for the first time tonight. Ordered Hunan Chicken, Crab Rangoon, and a Sprite. My bill was $19! I was shocked when I saw the prices, but would've been okay if the food was good. I found the food to not be bad, but it was very bland. It wasn't good or bad, just blah. I don't know everything about Hunan Chicken, but I've ate it in multiple states and Chinese places and I've never seen it with peanuts. It was all peanuts, chopped water chestnuts, and about 6 pieces of green pepper. The crab Rangoon looked tasty, but again they were just bland. The staff is always so friendly and kind, every dish on the menu is incredible and their service time is great. The Singapore noodles from Gourmet House are the closest thing to noodles from Hong Kong. I don't usually write reviews but we had a terrible experience with this place last night. We ordered our food at 6:40pm and finally called at 7:40 to ask how much longer we should expect. They then told us our food had been delivered 20 minutes ago, and simultaneously told us it would be here in 15 minutes. At 8pm, we finally called again only to be told it will be there eventually. The fried rice was a little lacking in the veggie & flavor department and it seemed different than your usual take out fried rice, more soft if that makes sense? Which was fine I just wish more veggies and egg were mixed in. Egg roll was a little undercooked and not as crisp as I would like. Sticking with my rules for stars, going with a 3 (would give 3.5 if I could) as I went for lunch, the food and service was good, but nothing special. The hot and sour soup was good, lacked some of the "hot" - I added pepper, it helped. Orange chicken was good as well, good sauce, chicken chunks were a fair ratio of meat to breading, tender as well. The egg roll, I'm not a fan of chinese egg rolls (prefer Vietnamese or Thai), so I tried it, wasn't the worst I've ever had, had an interesting taste.
