I love Bar Toto, it is one of my favorite Park Slope restaurants and I've been eating and ordering from there for years. They are an easy go to if I'm walking around the neighborhood or you have people in town, there is something for everyone. Their food is chefs kiss. They HAD (emphasis on had) the BEST steak sandwich in the entire city if not the world. I would dream of this sandwich, crave this sandwich almost weekly and order it frequently. I spent an obscene amount of money on this sandwich. I've told everyone I know about how this is the best steak sandwich ever. The meat is tender and juicy. You can actually bite it unlike other steak sandwiches. The bread is crispy and crunchy but doesn't hurt your mouth. I don't even like red onions but after trying to order it without it truly needs the red onions to round out the flavor. This is my love letter to Bar Toto and my plea to please please please bring back the steak sandwich. The caprese is good, the cheesesteak panino is not a replacement. It was taken off the menu without warning after eating it for years and I didn't even know December 10 would be my last time eating it. I did bring my parents here though at Christmas time and my mom devoured the pappardelle and my dad loved the meatball panino. The space is cozy and warm and they have great outdoor seating in the summer. But please bring back the Steak Panino, signed it's greatest fan. read more

My wife and I along with our son enjoyed a nice Mother's Day Dinner here last night. Bar Toto doesn't accept reservations which in Park Slope is unheard of but actually quite nice! We didn't wait long for our table and sat in the back along the wall. This was our order : Meatball Panini w/ fries that my son loved ! Bruschetta with blue cheese and a side of sautéed spinach that my wife enjoyed and the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti and a side of fries for me that I found pleasantly delicious . The staff was friendly and I did have trouble finding a good balance for the kiddos - the spaghetti substituted with penne was a winner. But the "hamburger" was not a winner. They do have homemade lemonade which was nice of Them to split between the kids since I didn't really want to drink two cups of lemonade. I came here with mutual friends who really enjoyed this place and comes here very often. To be honest I really wanted to like this place and even heard the previous mayor comes here and it's super residential and serves the neighborhood. That is a check for me already. The thing is- i feel like the food is quite expensive for the quality. The pasta was not fresh and taste like any other pasta for over 20 dollars each and the calamari was definitely not breaded well or was fresh (you can see from the photo). It tasted like days old along with the tomato sauce maybe being from a can. There's no interesting flavors nor is there anything that struck me as a good classic meal either. I know a lot of people have been coming here for years but there is better food out there than this. I just really can't believe I paid around $50 for my portion of the meal. (Pasta, wine and a part of the app) I would believe it if it was actually fresh pasta and fresh shrimp. read more

Came here to dinner with a family friend and our kids. They must have changed the menu since Covid-19 because the menu seems smaller than what I remembered. We ordered the American for the kids which is the closest to cheeseburgers but every sandwich is cooked panini style. A little disappointing they don't even have pickles for the burgers so it was literally just meat and cheese on panini. Also for $20, it's a pretty pricey burger. The hanger steak was good but nothing extraordinary. The grilled pizza was ok but it really didn't taste like pizza since it was grilled so you don't get that crispy texture you expect from pizza. The crab cake was meh. It tasted kinda bland and had way too many fillers and not enough crab meat. For a family friendly neighborhood like Park Slope, this place does not have a kid friendly menu. read more

Our first visit to bar Toto was pleasant, food and service was ok , however tonight was pretty upsetting. First of all the lady was pretty rude and forgot two items out of our order, we understood that that it was full house and didn't make a fuss about it. When the food came the fettuccini with shrimp and clams the portion was insanely tiny , pasta was for two bites LITERALLY ( comparing to the first time) me and my husband asked for extra pasta on the side and mentioned the portion, the lady proceeds to say ok no problem ( no apology nothing ) and brought the extra pasta and charged 14$ for it ( see receipt below). Besides the fries that came 45 mins later again no apology. I've asked for garlic aoli to come with the fries but it never came. Such a disappointing experience read more

They weren't spectacular. I ordered a bowl of Mussels. The Mussels were steamed properly, and the brodo was delicious. I ordered a glass of Verdicchio, and a glass of Cabernet. My wife and I dined for the second time after a fantastic first experience here a few weeks back. Today's experience was the opposite and it was mainly service and lack of consistency unfortunate to say. We ordered fettucine with shrimp, french fries, a chicken caesar salad and drinks. The shrimp pasta had a noticeably reduced portion of pasta and the salad had the same issue with a lettuce. The server forgot the order of french fries and bread which took an additional ten+ minutes to arrive. As we waited, I decided to order additional fettucine for the shrimp pasta since it was disproportionate relative to the seafood and again not in line with the portions from our first visit. I expressed to the waitress and busboy why we ordered additional pasta which i mentioned in my prior statememt here and i got an "ok", not even an apology from either of them (which the plain pasta was $14 see receipt) . Ordered takeout for dinner after a long day out in the sun. We ordered 3 courses to share. Our appetizers were the fritto misto and the caesar salad. The salad was really just that... a salad, but a very passable one. The fritto misto was an interesting dish of surprise textures. The soft zucchini and the crispy seafood. I was kinda hoping for a fried calamari dish but this was a nice change of pace. The star of the show was the orrichette with broccoli rabe pesto, sausage, fresnos, and pecorino. Bar Toto is quite the neighborhood staple. I had been assiduously avoiding it for the last year or so--mostly due to PTSD sensations from having watched the 2016 election results there--but returned recently after realizing that it is one of the few nice weekday brunch options in the area to be reminded of some of the excellence I've been recently missing. The fried eggs with a rich, creamy polenta and succulent sautéed mushrooms were a lovely brunch. Eggs were cooked perfectly so that the yolk ran and mixed delightfully with the polenta. Bar Toto's fries are always nice and crispy and flavorful as well. (I do hate the little ketchup cups, though. Gimme the bottle and let me dictate my ketchup consumption, thank you very much.). My wife enjoyed her Eggs Toto (baked and served with olives and carmelized onions) as well. In keeping with its authentic Italian feeling, wine selections are stellar here, whereas beer selections... not so much (but at least you can get a Guinness). Menu looked as familiar as when i used to come. (Happy to see my favorite, the Gorgonzola and red onion Toto panini burger, was still an option.) Bar Toto will probably never again make your hot, trendy eats list, but it manages some upscale, thoughtful comfort food--probably European-style comfort food--I'm glad it has survived and thrived in my 'hood for so long. read more

This place has some kind of allure because Bill DeBlasio was seen dining here a few times (or so I've heard). I'm skeptical about taking restaurant recommendations from former mayors, especially when that seems to be the main reason driving the popularity, but having dined here, I can vouch that this isn't one to overlook. Granted, I've only been once and have only tried the Orecchiette. But it was a damn good Orecchiette, perfectly al dente, spicy and saucy. I will be coming back for more. The menu is pretty extensive, ranging from more traditional Italian pastas to burgers and paninis and pizza. This can be daunting for the indecisive. But it's a great place for picky eaters because there's something for everyone. Recommend coming with a small group (2-4) if you want to get seated in a reasonable amount of time. read more

After searching a few places in park slope decided to come to this place just cause of its name lol I went to this bar with my girlfriend at around 1pm and just a few people outside drinking wine breakfast etc. We were the first one inside and I must say it's a very neat and well designed bar. Love the vintage look and the tables and chairs. The bar area was nice the round seats by the bar were very uncomfortable but it wasn't a big deal. The bartender was so nice his name was (ALFRED) best service I had in a long time time guy should be promoted if any chance. Came here with some lady friends for a girls night and had a nice time. The staff is very friendly and one of the bartenders, Shawn/Sean, recommended a blueberry mojito when I wanted something fruity - it was yummy :) The fries were good, as were the paninis, polenta and pasta. The gelato was delicious and the chocolate dessert was good too. We never felt rushed and the staff was attentive. Pricing was a little more on the high side, but we stayed for hours and enjoyed our time :) read more

It was a get together with friends but after awhile I noticed the waitress appeared upset-frustrated that we were there talking amongst each other that she gave us the bill immediately after seeing the last person finish their plate. Your new roommate asks you if you've ever gone to a place alone, ordered a plate of pasta and some wine, and just enjoyed it. Suppressing an eye roll, you say of course, you've done a lot alone. Then, you think to yourself, 'was it PASTA, though?' Meanwhile, there's a place 1.5 blocks down the hill from you. You've walked by i a thousand times, but when it was closed. Each time, you looked through the glass at the tiny honeycomb tiles on the floor and the wooden chairs propped upside down upon a well shined bar and told yourself that someday, you'd go. On a Saturday, you wake up for the first time without plans, and have to confront backlog of mundane tasks, plus your existential loneliness. Wanting to curl up in bed again even if you're not much of a sleeper, you get up anyway and go through your errands. You make your own coffee and have it black on an empty stomach - in approximately 15 minutes, you feel like you're gonna make it in life and you're ready to do anything. You go to the grocery and start walking back, and there's the place again, and it's open! It's 1-something on a Saturday afternoon but the space is not crowded. To your relief, the only Park Slope children here are halfway grown and decidedly unintrusive looking, sitting quietly and happily with their presumably single dad. Tentatively, you step in. There are only a few couples in there, but the servers apologize that you can't take a window table in an empty area because it's for four-people parties in case such groups arrive. You briefly considering the tables that are still set up out in the 50 degree December air, but deciding to get locked in on the booth side of a long row of vacant tables for two. You're surprised at how big the dining space is - at least twice as large as you thought it was. None of the envisioned intimacy is lost, however, and straight across you, bottles of various liquors up on the shelf wink back in kaleidoscopic relief against a burnished, filigreed wall. The first thing the server does is bring you a clean, clear wine bottle filled with water. You're appreciative, and can't actually remember the last time an establishment, fancy or casual, in NYC or elsewhere, provided old world service with this simple and essential gesture. The array of classic brunchtime cocktails are $8 - you're used to $16, so you get a Bloody Maria (made with flavorful tequila, not liver-pickling vodka) and unwind as you wait for spaghetti and meatballs. You're kind of afraid it'll be bland because of what one single Yelper wrote, but you prepare yourself not to mind. All you want is to be fed, and this standard dish will get the job done. Period. The pasta arrives piled hot and deep, speckled throughout with dark ribbons of freshly chopped basil and paisley shaped discs of sauteed garlic. A reasonbly sized meatball is lodged in each corner of the dish. In the same move, the server puts down also sets forth a small bowl of pepper flakes WITH A SPOON, and a small bowl of non-clumpy powdered parmesan WITH A SPOON. Already drunk from the alcohol and the onset of bliss, you think about how you also can't remember the last time a place didn't forget to give you a utensil or some accompaniment. You take a breath before beginning. The single dad walks by, locks eyes with you, and smiles. You smile back even if you're not looking for a zaddy and take a bite. The zing of tomato sauce! The roasted heartiness of garlic! The aroma of basi! The gratifying chewiness of perfectly cooked thick spaghetti! The savory and spice of the cheese and pepper flakes whose proportions you dictated yourself!! You spear a colorful half of an heirloom cherry tomato and pop it into your mouth. It releases a sweet, lively juice. You can't believe it - this may be the best spaghetti and meatballs you've ever had, but who will believe you? You eat, never so happy to be alone while wanting to share this with someone. At the bar, a white woman slaps her Asian boyfriend's ass. 'You go, brother!' you think. The dad and his kids converse like equals, and you can't hear them. You don't remember being watched, but the server brings another bottle of water the moment you drain your cup. After swiftly paying, you leave at your leisure, looking back with a smile. Outside, the first breath smells like surf wax. The second breath smells like dried leaves. The third breath is exhaust from a leaf-blower, recalling to you summers on boats. The fourth breath is snow that you wish could come, and now you're passing by the fire station, running under the engine's ladder because you heard somewhere that it's bad luck to walk. The fifth breath before you return to your shabby walk-up reeking dully of other people's children and stale emissions from economical home cooking is that of a brownstone's woodsmoke. Really disappointed with this place. We ordered 2 burgers and an order of penne for delivery. Mind you- burgers were $20 EACH!! Once delivered, tipped $10, walked inside and checked the food. Guess what - our penne is not with our order... no worries.. we call the restaurant and they say "oh yes, sorry it's here". They tell us they don't have a delivery person going out to our area and that we have to place a 2nd order to get our forgotten food...?? For real? The four stars is solely for the food. Yes, it was a Friday night. Yes, the World Series was on. Yes, it's a bar. But damn, a few "customers" at the bar can really ruin a nice dinner with friends. It's a shame, because my food was EXCELLENT. And I felt the staff was nice and accommodating enough. But when a bunch of obnoxious women seated at the bar were extraordinarily LOUD in this small-ish restaurant (and the staff allowed them to be), it ruined the experience, and made us want to leave. We asked one of the staff about the raucous behavior of the women at the bar, and he deadpanned, "It's the World Series." SO??!! Is Bar Toto a sports bar? Or is it an Italian restaurant and bar?
