The place is big inside and there were Adirondack chairs all over the front yard, so cute! but it was way too hot the day we were there. Great spot & solid stop in downtown Matthews. I would say the Corned Beef poutine was our favorite for sure.... the service was great and they're very keen to ensure drinks are full. Hubs and I stopped by on a random date-night & were very happy to see all that downtown Matthews has to offer! I've never gotten into an argument with a hostess before, but there is a first time for everything! The outright rudeness of this person really made me angry. I was out to dinner with my mom trying to have a good evening, but this restaurant is clearly lacking in any politeness or customer service! (Also maybe it rubbed me the wrong way that this hostess was in her 50s and old enough to know better. I am more forgiving of oblivious teenagers than adults who I expect to be more competent at their job!) My family has driven by Grace O'Malley's many times while driving through downtown Matthews, always noticing it was busy most of the time (when the weather was good), as they have a good-sized patio area out front. Prior to my recent trip for the holidays, they visited Grace O'Malley's after living in Matthews for a couple of years and tried their fish and chips. They enjoyed them and said I needed to try them as well. It's across the street from Renfrows in the heart of downtown. Street parking is primarily the main option - we went on a Monday night which wasn't too busy in terms of finding a spot to park. We were offered the chance to take a high table or spots at the bar, as there would be a wait for a regular table inside. We chose a high table and were seated quickly. Our waiter handled some of the bar orders and our table, but was always friendly and on top of things. He made sure glasses were refilled and that we had everything we needed once food arrived. All three of us bought fish and chips that evening. It was a short wait for the food to come out, but the fish and fries were fresh and hot throughout. (The waiter confirmed that everything is made to order.) Fish had a light, crispy batter around the filet and the inside was moist. Fries were the right balance of crispy with some softer ones. (None of the fries got soggy.) They give you a good sized portion for the price you pay. I recently met some friends for a Sunday afternoon late lunch/early dinner. We decided to split everything and indulge, and ordered a variety of items from the menu. Before I get into the food I have to tell you about the restaurant and service. The space is beautiful, high ceilings with a quaint bar in the corner, tables throughout and TVs for people to enjoy games, during prime seasons. Service was on point which made the visit even better. As for the food, I'm not sure if I can pick a highlight because everything was great, but if I had to choose I would say the Wings and Fish & Chips were standout. The Fish was light and Crispy and a perfect portion. Oh, now as I'm writing this I am remembering the amazing flavors from the Irish Chicken Curry. So, that should tell you something...a day later I am still thinking about the dishes. Great place, in the heart of Matthews. I originally lived in Matthews for a number of years, it's amazing how their downtown has changed/evolved over the years. Grace O'Malley's is a welcome player in the downtown matthew's scene. I know the Beer Temple / Seaboard / Mojo takeover is a nice little beer refuge, but it's good to have food options as well. I'm not sure what the restuarant used to be, but I like that the restuarant perserved the building and created a comfortable, neighborhood spot for everyone to enjoy. There's a really nice outdoor spot (for when it cools down - not really much shade around) but the patio should be hoppin' when fall rolls around. The servers are all super friendly and you can tell they've got regulars that they greet by name. Large bar with stools... probably 12-14 people and then the dining room has a ton of tables that can be moved around for larger groups. The chairs are comfy and easy to lounge in - perfect for hanging out (for long periods of time). I was in a large group so we shared everything: Ruben, wings, poutine, curry chicken, Shepard's pie, and fish and chips. Everything was delicious. The food speaks for itself - super photographable and the flavors match the presentation. The guiness flows well on tap here. I would feel guilty if I ordered anything else but, but I'm sure you can take a break or two for cocktails or the occasional water. read more

What a cute Irish pub! I love the outdoor patio and can't wait to sit out there when the weather cools down some. I came with a group of 5. We were seated quickly but it took a while to get our drink orders. For food we ordered corned beef, Irish blt, fish and chips, and the Reuben. We also got wings for an appetizer. The food came out surprisingly quick. The least favorite of the table was the Irish blt. It was soggy. The side salad that came with the blt was delicious though. The wings were good! The table favorite was the fish and chips. The chips or fries were crispy and the fish was fluffy and delicious. The corned beef was wonderful but the Irish cabbage was very rich. I can't remember the last time I went to an Irish restaurant, so we decided to give Grace O'Malley's a try. It's right on the main street in downtown Matthews. The inside is nice, but doesn't seem to have a lot of atmosphere. I volunteered to sit at the last hightop in the bar instead of the table for two I saw them eyeing for us by the swinging kitchen doors. Note to all restaurants: absolutely no one wants to sit by the kitchen door or even peer into the kitchen, so reconfigure your dining room, thank you. Our server/bartender spoke to us in an Irish accent, and we wondered if that was his real accent or something he does for show. If it's not real, he really gets into his work. I took a peek at the menu before we went, and I knew I had to order the Corned Beef Poutine appetizer. French fries topped with gravy, cheese curds, and corned beef? Yes, please. The flavor combination was delicious, but for $10, I think I expected a bit more on the plate (and shredded corned beef instead of tiny cubed pieces). I ordered the lamb burger cooked medium. I think it came out well done, but it still tasted good, although it, too, was lacking in size and toppings, making it appear smaller than it actually was. As my side (to be good), I ordered steamed broccoli. Braised cabbage came out in its place, which I absolutely will not eat. After mentioning this to our server, it took quite awhile for the broccoli to come out (after we had finished our meals), and then it was just mediocre. It was steamed broccoli, and that's about it. No flavor, no seasonings. Just warmed up broccoli. I could have used that gravy from the appetizer and, in retrospect, I wish I had ordered the chips/fries that my partner ordered, which were actually like potato wedges and flavored with spices, to which I could have added malt vinegar as well. Ah well...live and learn. Maybe there will be a next time. I did try my first Irish Mule drink, similar to a Moscow Mule, but with Irish whiskey instead of vodka, served in a copper mug. It tasted pretty good, and not as bitter as I thought it might be. Grace O'Malley's has a big, awesome outdoor area which will be perfect during the summer months. Although there were some mishaps, I'd give Grace O'Malley's another try in the future. However, I still wish they'd up their game a little bit in their portion sizes and/or sides offered. They don't seem to fit very well with the pricing of each item. And more Irish theming inside would be a plus as well. read more

When we heard there was an Irish pub opening in Matthews, the thought of Guinness, fish and chips, and shepherd's pie flew through my mind. What we received was so much more than I imagined. There was a live Irish band playing all kinds of traditional music. There were lots of people laughing and talking and having a generally wonderful time. There was excellent, prompt, and friendly service. They said the wait would be 20 minutes but it was half that. The shepherd's pie was largely gravy based with a well seasoned and rich flavor. The plate was so hot I burned my finger a little. There are several TVs positioned around the restaurant so you can catch up on some sports. I've driven by this place 1000 times, finally my wife and I stopped in for dinner. The food was fantastic. My server was on point. The Gaelic chicken was awesome. It looked like a great atmosphere to watch a sporting event, there's a nice bar and lots of televisions throughout the restaurant. And the patio outside is really awesome. It's a good place for kids, but please don't do like the people at the table next to me. Don't bring your kid and let it scream and holler the entire time and ruin the atmosphere for other people there. Be polite to those around you. First time here and to go order. The atmosphere is nice. I ordered fish and chips(looking at the pic on the menu, assumed it would be 2 pieces to split and my daughter had been there before and ordered this and had food to take home) as well as chicken sliders, meatball appetizers and mashed potatoes. When I got it all home, there was one long piece of fish, a small amount of fries that we had to put in the air fryer as they were mush. The mashed potato quantity was good but not seasoned or buttered so we added alot to it. The cod was really good, just disappointed for $19 that you get 1 piece and a handful of fries! The BBQ meatballs were rather disappointing as well, quantity I think was 5 or 6, small, and didn't taste done, watery, with some cheese thrown on them and a very small amount of bbq sauce, not impressed. The chicken sliders, fried, had zero flavor as well except for the honey mustard. We had to season those too. Bad cook night or maybe this is the norm? Will most likely not return. Landmark restaurant on Central has great fish and chips for alot less and you get 4 or 5 pieces of fish and a huge amount of fries(on Fridays). read more

Husband and I have eaten here 4 times now. Twice for dates and twice with our 18mo son. Food is always delicious and when we have drinks on dates the drinks are tasty. When our son comes with us he loves everything he try's and the staff is always amazing with him when he demands attention. Today(10/15/22) we had a date and I had the salmon meal and it was tasty, salmon was more cooked then I would like but I love raw salmon so I'm biased. Husband got the Rubin and that was so good. Matthews has certainly changed over the years but still has maintained its semi rustic/ suburban character. One totally unexpected but amazing addition to the dining scene here is Grace O'Malley's, a Traditional Irish Style Pub. I'm not sure what was in this historic building before, but they've done a great job of transforming the interior into the real thing - you really feel transported. So let's talk about Guinness for a second - there's nothing worse than an ice cold Guinness. Here at Grace's, they ABSOLUTELY know how to pour a perfect pint of Guinness, at the perfect temperature - not too cold, not too warm with a small creamy head. Just a real treat! And 20 oz. for $7 is a deal. The menu here has some amazing selections on it. It's like a hybrid of Irish Public House Dishes and American Pub food, with a couple of twists and turns here and there. For appetizers we tried some fairly addictive wings that were perfectly sauced. My favorite appetizer however was easily the Corned Beef Poutine - start with some hand cut fries, add cheese curds, pulled corned beef and smother it in a Black Peppercorn Curry Sauce, then run it under a broiler. Holy wow! What a combination! We may have broken protocol and got a Reuben to split as an appetizer too. I would eat that sandwich as a main course any day of the week! For our main course we ordered Shepherd's Pie (a family recipe from one of the owner's mothers), Irish Curried Chicken (over rice) and Fish and Chips. All were very good, but when is the last time you had Fish and Chips made with fish from Alaska that has never been frozen??? Unreal flaky, moist steaming, delicious fish with just the right amount of exterior crunch. A small squeeze of lemon and a little Malt Vinegar and you will have one exceedingly happy mouth! Don't even hesitate - get the Fish and Chips! Just had a blast here - great dining experience and worth the trip to Matthews! read more

Comfort food on a Sunday afternoon is one of my favorite things. Sometimes when you go to Irish pubs, the atmosphere is like they are trying too hard, but at Grace, it has a comfortable, neighborhood feel, I really like it and the patio is amazing for cooler weather. We had a small group, we ordered a few dishes, my favorite was the Rueben and the wings. We ordered the chicken curry, I ordered it over rice because we had already had Poutine and fries with the Rueben, but screw it, I wish we would have ordered the chicken curry over fries. My husband and I went to Grace O'Malley's about 5:30 this evening. We were seated right away, and then totally ghosted. After sitting at the table for a good 15 to 20 minutes, no waiter or waitress even came by to take our drink orders much less our meal orders. The adults liked the flavors as a take on Canadian poutine. I tried the fish and chips entree. It was generous portion of white fish fried just tasty. The fries were yummy too. My friend had the lamb burger and liked the flavor. The others had the reuben sandwich and said it was tasty. Their beers are typical Guinness and Harp.
