This is one of my favorite restaurants. The venue is laid-back, and the service is great. I usually get a burger here, but the macaroni and cheese is also delicious. You CANNOT go there without trying the mushroom appetizer! The food was very good. The attached brewery beer was very mediocre. The bread pudding was truly great, however, I was quite uncomfortable with their lackadaisical approach to Covid guidelines. The bartender never had his mask covering his nose while we were there seated directly across from the bar. Tables were too close together and customers stood waiting for a table apparently thinking that because they were holding a drink they didn't have to mask up. You will have a wait...whether it looks half empty or bursting with activity, you will have a wait. That being said, the food is very well done. They have unique flavors and put out good food. My favorite is the Prime Rib served on Wednesday nights. They also have really good burgers. The quality of service depends on who you get. This last time, we had Alicia, she was excellent! She was new, but she was great! We are not drinkers, but we have heard their craft beer is very good. If this appeals to you, I think you would enjoy the experience. There are few good things about this place and none of them are exclusive to this restaurant. The beer was good from the brewery next door. The cheesecake was amazing, but that's from a local bakery. I got the fish tacos, which are supposedly blackened salmon. It was the nastiest fish I've ever tasted, after one bite I immediately sent it back, that's how I got the cheesecake, they gave it to me for free because I was so grossed out by the tacos. The rest of my party had burgers which were a huge disappointment. They both were asked how they wanted them cooked and they both said medium, not sure why. They were mildly warm frozen pattis that they most likely reheated in the microwave and placed on the bun. Both said they were very nasty and disappointing. I had asked for the crab cake after I sent the tacos back, it was actually really good. The women's bathroom also smelled like a sewer. The service was slow, but they did make it right by giving me a replacement meal that was good and free cheesecake. If we are in the area again, I'd probably wait till three, go to the brewery next door and get pizza then stop by the bakery for cheesecake and be completely satisfied. read more

I come here throughout the summer while staying at my cabin at Fairmount Camp. I live in Kentucky. Today was opening day for the cabin, and as usual I went to Grains & Grill for my dinner. I had the Barry Burger and it was fantastic. So large I could not eat it all, so, of course I got a take-away box for my lunch another day. Joanie, the owner, greeted me warmly and remembered me as a seasonal guest. My server was Allison and she provided excellent service with a smile. Grains and Grill use to be one of our family's favorites to meet at for a great dinner. We would always come on Wednesday or Thursday's when they they received their shipment of prime tomahawk steaks, which they took off the menu a couple years back. We always order several appetizers, a couple bottles of wine-prisoner with out steaks, and always took more dessert home. Over the past three years the food quality has gone down hill and they no longer have our family's favorite two appetizers. The portions have become small and overpriced. It is sad to see one of our favorite restaurants in the state turn into an over price restaurant that we haven't had a good meal at over the last dozen times we've went. We ordered carry out almost once a month when we would come up to the area to visit family during COVID 19 to help a small town business. We never once had a good meal and they always mess your order whether you dine in or carry out. We went one last time this week to give it a last chance, and again they messed up my order and my daughter-in-laws. Everyone's steak was overcooked, fully of salt, and very poor quality. I am sad to say, our whole family agreed it would be last trip up to Grains and Grill. read more

I was fortunate enough to attend one of their soft opening events. First, let me start out by saying the food was fantastic. Second, the craft beer selection is phenomenal. There aren't many places where you can find Three Floyds, Sun King, and Bell's on tap. If you live in Fairmount or the surrounding area I highly recommend giving this place a try. Excellent food during 3 visits recently! Love all the choices of draft beer, get a flight to sample the options. The Mac and Cheese is out of this world and the beef tips with veggies was superb! The burgers are a great choice too; a big, juicy patty packed with flavor and topped with a lightly toasted and G&G branded bun. If you're looking for more of an Indiana staple, try the Pork Tenderloin; perfection in terms of batter and still moist inside. Loved the gravy that accompanied the tenderloin. It's hard to save room for a delicious entree when you've had yummy appetizers like pretzel sticks and hummus though . Great options for kids too, their "Little Farmers" menu offered delicious options for my kids. The atmosphere was family friendly, yet offered more private options inside or out if its date night. Back again 5 months later and cane honesty say I am not disappointed. The place to be and eat.

My wife Kate and I had a very nice visit tonight at Grains and Grill in Fairmount, Indiana . I used to work with the owners Barry and Joanie several years ago. I knew they started this new restaurant from scratch.....we just had to see. The Grains and Grill has a nice comfortable vibe to it. Something along the lines of an upscale sports bar. Very nice. Everything is new, with some old lighting and decorations. I started out with a flight of 4 of their dozen or so craft beers. It was a fun way to get things going. The food was great ! An eclectic menu of good comfort food, prepared and presented with an upscale touch. My wife had an entree of thinly sliced smoked salmon with nice Callameta Olives, and a Parmesan cream sauce, served over whole wheat penne pasta. She loved it. I had a house meat loaf with sweet potato hash, brussel sprouts, and a sweet onion sauce covering it all. This was served with a generous portion of corn bread served with a tasty honey. I had a house salad prior, with a tasty chili lime vinagerette. There were several desserts available. We both simply were too full. I highly recommend Grains and Grill. They have call ahead seating, which we used. They have been quite busy, but the staff hustles and gets people seated and served as quick as possible. The chef has it going on..... Everything is prepared to order and presented wonderfully. The staff is polite and helpful. Their pastry chef has some nice treats. The appetizers look wonderful. And of course, Joanie is simply the best. Sorry we couldn't meet up with Barry tonight. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will be back. Grains and Grill is 5 stars all the way ! read more

We went to this establishment for the first time for a family birthday. The food was excellent. The server went above and beyond. The restaurant itself was very clean. The food was to me average in price. The portions were plenty as my wife split a meal with her mom. They could not finish it. The cool thinking I liked about the place is it is based on healthy fresh food. They even make their dressings from scratch, now that's cool! I would definitely recommend this for a date night with the significant other or a family. It is not the biggest place so I recommend getting there early. Not being very big inside makes it a little more quieter to talk. All in all it is well worth the drive to this little town for a great meal and atmosphere! read more

Excellent restaurant in James Dean's hometown! Fun ambiance with a knowledgeable, entertaining staff who love to cater to your needs. Best craft beer selection on the whole area, supporting local and exotic flavors. Full bar also! The food that I've tried has ranged from Halibut steaks to Short rib steaks, and they have great fried mushrooms and baked goat cheese. Hard to give any criticism to this place; on occasion the meat temperatures were slightly different than we ordered, but the quality and recipe helped mask this. Peyton (sp?) will help you at the bar and the owners are down-to-earth, friendly people. I'll look forward to visiting every summer when I visit with my parents. They're speaking about a brewery in the back of the restaurant which would be fun and tasty! read more

I had dinner last night. I stated with an awesome shrimp cocktail, and a Caesar salad. My filet mignon was over cooked and flat. I've never seen a 6oz fillet that is flat and I think it may make it hard to pan sear and cook right. They brought me another that was cooked on the outside and completely raw on the inside. I've been going to the G & G since it opened and have tried many appetizers and most all entrees. I adore the tomato basil soup so hope they continue to keep it on the menu. Steaks and burgers are yummy, and the two breaded pork tenderloin entrees are done well--a Hoosier staple that we crave. They went from a small skillet of sweet cornbread to corn muffins, which is great (could never eat all that.) Portions are spot on and explained well. Fish tacos--so good--Is an appetizer and could easily be a light supper. What I love is that we now have a good restaurant right in town and I don't have to drive to Indy or Ft. Wayne, though those people might want to check out Fairmount's own. Have a problem? Owners bend over backwards to make it right--small town friendliness exemplified! And their chef puts a local spin on dishes, but is hip to progressive innovation. I love it that there is a large herb garden, the ambience of the inside and out decor is so beautiful--and if you love beer, don't forget the 16 taps! read more

Overall it's seems like a good restaurant with quality food and a nice quaint atmosphere. However, I had an issue with an undercooked steak the wait staff took care of out it but proceeded to question me when I asked if they recooked the same steak I had already cut in half that was rare as rare can be. The conversation ended with me saying thank you, have a good day to the waitress who was standing there awkwardly, after that the waitress laughed in my face about the steak and walked away, not to mention she never introduced herself when she began waiting on me. Being laughed at and spoken to rudely was one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a restaurant. Sure the food may be good but you couldn't pay me to go back here and eat due to the extremely rude staff. Recommendation is to never go here. read more

Well this hurts me to write a bit as i love the food and atmosphere of this establishment. The last two times i have been here the service and wait times seem to not be all there. Tonight it seemed our server was more interested with the bartender than getting our order correct. Upon receiving our food i sent mine back as it wasn't quite what i ordered. You can find brews from Three Floyd's, Sun King, and Bells along with the staple domestics. The food is traditional American pub fare of which the chef has added his own twist. Went there based on yelp reviews for my daughter's bday. They were very accommodating to not let their guests wait which is what I saw first. We had the mushroom bread bowl appetizer. OMG soooo good! The bread is a perfect crusty flaky outside with moist bread inside with a mountain full of a variety of thyme seasoned mushrooms. Everyone at the table said at least twice how good the bread was! Then the majority ordered bacon mac n cheese hamburgers which not only were tasty but huge! The house burger with the bacon jam was probably the favorite. I ordered the cod special of night which was good also. They finished the night with birthday fried bread pudding which was like a really good fried apple fritter. Wish we lived closer but we will be back every time we come to visit our daughter in college! read more

Unfortunately after being so excited to try this place from hearing such wonderful reviews, we had an awful experience. We got here when it was NOT busy, yet the people that got to the table beside us 20 minutes AFTER we had already ordered got their food a good 15 minutes before us. His steak was not cooked right, way too done and tasted burnt. My burger was very bland and there was hardly any sauce or coleslaw on it. Then I had ordered sweet potato fries but got regular fries instead. Just nothing went right at all. We've already discussed that we will not be returning. read more

This is our favorite local restaurant. The food is excellent. We love the creamed corn which is part of the Hoosier Hotplate. The mushroom bowl, goat cheese, and grilled romaine salad are also tops on our list. There is an ample craft beer menu where you can follow the advice of your server if you have questions. The service is awesome!! Jessie was our server and she did an outstanding job suggesting beverages and interacting with our party just the right amount. I was there on a Friday night with a friend, and we had a 45 minute wait. I hear this is pretty common for this restaurant no matter what day it is, so it's nice to hear that they are getting a lot of business. after we got seated, our waitress was very attentive and then when we got the food we were both very happy with our choices. My friend got the chicken sliders appetizer that looked really good and he said was delicious. I got the house burger with white cheddar cheese and bacon jam and that was also delicious. The French fries were good, though I could have used a little bit more. Overall it was a great experience! read more

I went here with two friends for dinner. Two of us had a burger. The other had the meatloaf. We got the pork belly for an appetizer. The pork belly had a great cranberry sauce on it. We actually liked the sauce better than the pork belly itself. It just seemed like a big, chewy slab of meat. It would have been nice to have some bread or crackers with it. Our burgers were delicious. The bacon jam accompanying them was absolutely amazing. My friend said that her meatloaf was the best she's every had. I ordered the pork tenderloin sandwich in hopes of getting in touch with my boyhood memories, and was disappointed. It's not that the food was horrible, it was just barely ok bar food. Wanted to try this place for a while and it seems to be a thriving business. Parking lot was full and people were willing to wait up to an hour. Clearly, it has a dedicated following of patrons in the area. The front area was a tad small, but there is a back area that was larger. Hostess staff were friendly, but clearly inexperienced. Very clean establishment. Took reservations. $120 for 5 adults and 3 kids. We tried a couple of the burgers and they were on par with typical chain restaurants, but nothing really special. Fish had a very strong odor. The wedge salad is not a wedge and I would not recommend ordering this item. Drinks were potent and fairly priced. We didn't try desert. Portions were on the larger side of standard. Server was young but did a good job and was personable. Took about 45 minutes to get our food, however, it was a busy Friday night. Attached to the back room is a separate brewery where you can walk to and get a different menu of beers-a little unconventional but does offer you more variety. I probably wouldn't seek out to visit again; maybe if someone I was with wanted to try it. It's not bad at all, just not the incredible quality and uniqueness I was expecting. Perhaps the more expensive dinner options (like the steak) are where this place shines, but if I'm going to pay those types of prices I can go to a top notch steakhouse in Indy. read more
