This place has a great atmosphere, and is a fun and classy place for this little town. However, I haven't had the best experience with their food. One time my chicken was undercooked and several times my burgers have been very burnt. But their French fries are incredible! Well where to start. We decided to go here on a whim after learning it existed by accident. I have to say the food, amazing, the drinks, amazing. I was not sure what to expect but the photos of the food looked decent, so we said what the heck let's try it. We went on a Friday at 8pm. There was about an hour wait for a table so we chose to just sit at the bar. Service was a little slower but we also were not in a huge hurry either. I will say if you are looking for service like a chain restaurant that just wants you in and out, you will not get that here, but it's worth it. We ordered the pretzel sticks as an appetizer, I was not prepared for how great these and the cheese fondue dip was going to be. They were served warm and tender and were not a thick dough one expects of a warm pretzel. It was more of a bread texture and we could have ate those all night. They also serve you warm house bread with your meal. I ordered the bacon Mac and cheese which comes with chicken breast, broccoli, mushrooms, and bread crumbs. The portion size could easily be shared between two people. It was well done and the taste was exceptional. My wife had garlic chicken with mashed potatoes and a side of garlic green beans. She loved ever but of her meal. Usually when we go out her go to is a salad with chicken, she had no regrets and had very little to take home. Of course I sampled hers and she did mine and it was so flavorful and tingled your taste buds. You definitely won't go wrong with this dish either. We will be back to check out the rest of the menu and it may be our new go to place for date night. I didn't think for 2 people, 3 mixed drinks, appetizer, and two entrees, $100 was bad at all. The food and service was worth every cent. Again if you worry how fast you eat don't go here, savor the company you are with and the food and you will have a great experience here. Grains & Grill is a hidden gem in Fairmount, Indiana. You must save room for the Fried Bread Pudding with Cream Cheese Sauce. It's a warm, crispy and sweet sensation. The wait staff treat you like Family and are happy to suggest the delightful specials. I took my Wife as a surprise without knowing anything about the restaurant. I couldn't have picked a better restaurant for our special dinner. Be sure to use the call ahead seating and go early if possible on the weekend. They are always busy on the weekends. We Love to go to unusual off the beaten path restaurants and Grains & Grill is just that and you will not be disappointed. We highly suggest this special restaurant in little Fairmount. read more

I just moved to Marion and was very excited to find this place. There doesn't seem to be many local places in Marion and the ones that I have found so far don't have a menu that's close to the one here. First, the craft beer taplist is very nice, a great selection with great representations of most styles. Second, the menu has great choices that I need to go back and try. I got the house burger this time as I almost always crave a good burger and this burger turned out to be fantastic. Another thing that caught my attention is they had shark. Shark! In small town Indiana. That's pretty cool. Third, great service. Waitress stopped by a lot. Food came out pretty quickly. I also spoke with one of the owners and she was very nice. I'll be back a lot to work my way through the menu and as a huge craft beer nerd I'll probably be back just to sit at the bar and enjoy a few beers. read more

My wife's hair stylist told her during a recent appt. about G&G being her favorite restaurant. I looked at the Yelp reviews and we decided it was worth a try. We went tonight to celebrate our anniversary. Wow! My wife doesn't often get effusive about restaurant fare but my Texas-born doll said the ribeye she ordered was probably the most flavorful steak she's ever had. My pork chop w/caramelized apples was beyond delicious and even the fries spoiled me to the point of making run-of-the-mill French fries forever disappointing. Service from greeting to goodbye was outstanding and the owner, Joanie, chatted with all the diners to ensure all our experiences met expectations. We started with what we were told we couldn't miss: the pretzel breadsticks with cheese dip. Sinfully delicious and we will ALWAYS order them every time we dine here. Dessert? A strawberry shortcake for my wife and the caramel bread pudding for me. We shared and they didn't have to wash the plates! Bread pudding unlike any other. Anywhere. Ever. In Fairmount and it doesn't take reservations? As suggested, we got there when it opened tonight (Friday) and we could see why. They don't need to take them! Went the other night with some coworkers from work. This is a great place in the area. Nice selection of beers and wine. The appetizers were delicious and entrees cooked perfectly. I had the goat cheese app which was very tasty. Pretzel sticks were lightly buttered in a herb butter. I had the peppered steak sirloin which was seasoned and flavored perfect. No need to add anything which is the way a steak should be. We sat at the bar which was a nice experience and the bartender was great in selecting nice beers for us to enjoy. read more

Fairmount is one of these great Indiana small towns that seems left behind by the past 50 years...but Farimount has figured out that an old-fashioned Indiana town can be a pretty good place. In addition their amazing James Dean festival, they now have this amazing restaurant. The ambiance is rustic but it is very stylish. There is outdoor seating and a pretty cool bar. The menu is steaks and Indiana classics. I had a the "hoosier hotplate" which was a Hoosier pork tenderloin, creamed corn, pepper gravy, and baked potato. I have to say that the tenderloin was possibly the best I've ever had.. and that's saying a lot. I'll have to come back and try the HPT sandwich for a definitive answer, but provisionally it was incredible. There is also a really good beer selection here and the truffle cake is like eating a big truffle..... Definitely be back.... a huge plus for Fairmount (though not quite making up for losing the historic high school). read more

I had the "Kickin Chicken" and my partner had the net York strip. As an appetizer we had the 3 Floyd mushrooms. We went last night (Wed) before 8pm, no wait. My tenderloin ($11 with side) was fine - breading crispy crunchy good. I tried the Cajun Shrimp Mac and Cheese ($18) and I thought it was very good. My friends and been here since they opened. What has happened but this restaurant. Tonight we went to the brewery in the back. Had never been back there and we did not know what to do we ask a server and she said we should have looked on the door and we would Know? Self service or be seated? What a comment to make to your customers? The server we had was very good.. Although we had salad and pizza.. asked for ranch dressing or blue cheese. She said that was not possible that's part of Grains and not the brewery. I hate to say but its in one building... That does not make sense. Very unfortunate experience. Great appetizers but the quality of the meat is not as good as it was 3-4 years ago. My husband and I used to go once a month to support our local steakhouse but the last several times we did not have have the best experiences. I ordered the filet medium rare and it came back burnt all covered in salt. My husband usually orders the tomahawk ribeye, but they took it off the menu about 2 years age, so he thought he would play it save and order a cheese burger since the New York stripe isn't the best quality. His burger came back raw and ice cold in the middle. You could tell they used frozen meat. It is sad because this use to be place we would look forward to going to every month. Sad to say, but we will be traveling to Indy to Fort Wayne for our date nights from now on. read more

This was easily the worst dining experience in my life. My wife and I explore new restaurants on a monthly basis. This month she selected grains and grill. We had a reservation for eight and changed it to nine on arrival. After 90 minutes of waiting my wife asked the hostess if we would be served. The owner came to the table to let us know that they were out of several items but did not tell us what items they were out of. Several minutes later a waiter finally showed up to let us know the extensive list of items they did not have available. At this time we chose to leave. The only service we received at this restaurant was the service we provided for ourselves as we went to the bar to get our own drinks. The owner assured us that this was a one time issue and would not happen again. Honestly, I could care less. Do not go to Fairmount Indiana or you will waste your time. read more

This was my fourth visit, and I recommended Grains and Grill to my family for a birthday celebration. The server called us to the hostess stand and then directed us to the back room. She didn't lead or even follow us and we didn't know where we were supposed to sit down. We ended up choosing a table and she arrived with our silverware and menus 5 minutes later. We waited an hour to receive our food, and the Barry's Burger I ordered was only slightly warm. It was very good overall, but the fried egg was cool in the center. Of the six people at the table, we had three sets of very dirty silverware. What a surprise to find a great place like this. This isn't a "fast food, chain, with, warmed up or greasy fried food." The meals are individually prepared, plentiful, & "high end" priced. There is a choice of seating, & they even have a big screen / bar area. The wait persons were overwhelmed with their chores, so getting the check & paying took longer than getting the meal & eating. This is a new favorite place. Terrific house burger, great sweet potato fries (regular are great too). It's a 30 minute drive or more, but we make it a date night and actually get to talk on the drive rather than a movie.
