After eating there many times with complete satisfaction, my wife and I decide to 'cap' her hectic work week with dinner there last night. We drove an hour and 15 minutes to try this place. After eating here I'd drive two hours for it. The food was amazing and our server was so nice and attentive made the experience that much better. I had the ribeye steak. Small issue as I ordered it medium and it was almost well done but the restaurant was busy and I'd didn't want to send it back. The flavor and tenderness made up for the small mis step and I ate the entire thing. Ordered a lemon drop martini for a dinner drink it was delicious as well. Most options pricey for a small midwestern town. Good meal. I had a chicken sandwich with sweet potato fries. Nothing memorable, blackened breast, red onion, lettuce tomato on brioche bun. They brand their buns with GG on top. Husband got a fried pork tenderloin, with gray-tan gravy, very sweet creamed corn and a baked potato. Pumpkin cheesecake for dessert. Caramel sauce and nuts on top and served with dollop unsweetened whipped cream. Not overly sweet, probably a sour cream based cheesecake. The crust was thick and bland, could have used cinnamon graham cracker or a gingersnap crust. Waiter nice but not that informative. read more

I wish I could separate this review into two categories - the food and the business practices. The food was outstanding although $48 for a ribeye steak in this small town was a bit surprising. It was delicious, however. The fried brussel sprouts were extremely tasty. Everyone raved about the orange bourbon salmon ("The best salmon I have ever had", proclaimed a guest from Atlanta). We are foodies and this food is good! I would give the food 4.5 stars (I didn't like the pretzel appetizer. Skimpy portion of beer cheese fondue and I didn't did get the "tip" to order the Hot Honey for $1 more). The business practices, however, are ridiculous and off putting. Our 12 year old friend remarked, "Aren't restaurants in business to do business?" Even a youngster understood something was off. It started with the reservation. We were a party of 12 (including 3 children). I was told "We can only make reservations for 8." I had to call back to make the additional reservation. We immediately called back and were told, "No more reservations for that time." We made it for the next slot - 15 minutes later. When we arrived, the 7:30 table could be seated but the 7:45 party could not because "the reservation is for 7:45." No matter that the ACTUAL table was empty (they showed it to us). We literally had to wait 15 minutes on the dot. When the final guest arrived (making one party 9 due to the addition of a 6 year old), they were told, "Sorry they have to move to the other table (in a separate room) because (you guessed it!) the reservation was only for 8!" No matter that these are FARM sized tables and 3 of the guests were children! Nope, rules are rules. Get packing. The final straw was when one guest (relegated to the back table in a separate room) told the waitress, "I need to pay for my family in the front room at the other table." "Sorry, I can't do that," came the surprising answer. "I was not their waitress." ‍‍‍ That was when the 12 year old remarked about their ridiculous practices!!! Our group was from 3 major restaurant cities. We eat out all the time. We love food and interesting places. I would be very reluctant to return to this restaurant. If the business practices are so unfriendly and non-customer oriented, I will not patronize their establishment no matter how good the food is. Dining out should be enjoyable not annoying. We have enough frustration today without paying for it. Hence the two star rating. (I would have asked to speak with the manager but we were a large group with children that had traveled for 6 hours in a car and a friend in a wheelchair chair so time and circumstances did not allow). read more

Just visited again and sadly, I'm quite disappointed. The food was okay - when we finally got it but the waitress was not interested in providing us with customer service. She told us the wait staff was sent home early and she proceeded to dawn over three tables and totally disregarded us. We ordered a margarita that tasted almost of just alcohol and when we asked to have it removed and taken off our bill, she was visibly unhappy and literally took the drink, flipped around and left. We could hear her semi-complaining at the bar tender. She never came back to check on us. I had to ask twice for bread. Asked for water with no ice - received ice water. Asked for extra bread with our goat cheese appetizer. She didn't bring it. Had to ask again and by the time we received it the cheese had cooled. We left/paid the bill and walked out. Never had this experience before. You are a customer service based business. Your server needs to get her attitude together or work where she doesn't have to serve the public. read more

Driving by Fairmount on our way home from a trip to Ft. Wayne we decided to stop for dinner. We were hoping for a decent meal with no real expectations and stumbled upon Grains & Grill having no idea what dining experience awaited us. First of all, the service is near perfect. The restaurant was packed and a long line waited for tables. We found out we could be seated immediately at the bar so we didn't hesitate. There we met a bartender who knew how to make any drink as well as make some helpful suggestions. The Old Fashioned and local brews we had were fantastic. The people seated around us were in good spirits, no pun intended, and for good reason. They all made special trips just to eat here, repeat customers, and were all excited to tell us about their favorite dishes. We took their advice to start our dinner with what were the best crab cakes we've ever eaten. We have had crab cakes all over the United States and these were absolutely the best...in the middle of Indiana! Huge portions, fair prices and a flavor that was again the best we have ever experienced. In spite of the crowd the acoustics weren't bad and if you stopped to really listed you heard laughter and fun. The staff was extremely friendly which doesn't always happen when it gets as busy as it was last night. You know the management is solid when you have hired an excellent team and they perform the way they did for us. Service like this doesn't happen by accident. For all of those reasons and more we will be making another trip to Grains & Grill which is significantly out of our way but will be well worth the trip. read more

This used to be our absolute favorite place to go for anniversary's/birthdays/date night/friends coming to visit. The food was imaginative and delicious. That was until they started taking away the more imaginative menu items, and my favorite dish, Makers Mark 46 beef tips, wasn't made with the same amount of love it once had. We might be back if the menu gets interesting again, but for now, we will search for a new favorite. read more

What a perfect find in the heart of Hoosier Country. Connected to BadDad brewery, this restaurant has everything you look for in an Indiana restaurant. It was crowded when we walked in at 6:30 on a Wednesday, which is always a good sign. My family had already ordered the goat cheese with the cabernet reduction, as well as the pretzels. The pretzels with the cheese were pretty good, but the goat cheese was outstanding. The cabernet reduction was out of this world and I could eat that every day. For dinner I went with the hoosier plate, sub baked potato for mashed. The tenderloin with the gravy was amazing, the gravy particularly was packed full of flavor. The mashed potatoes were pretty good, and the creamed corn was some of the best I've had. My wife had the fish tacos which were also very good. Excellent food and service every time we visit. A few of the side items I would never have ordered on my own but gave them a try when they were plated with my meal and I am so GLAD I did - the sweet potato hash has become my favorite. So definitely have an open mind and try something new. Also, the shrimp cocktail is always available for order even though it is not on the menu. I do warn you to proceed with caution when it comes to the cocktail sauce - it is incredible but a little dab will do ya. If you are wanting seated quickly it is best to go early. We have enjoyed several dinners here. All have been gracious in size and the quality of the food was beyond my expectation. The service is good not great, yet, but with time and training I believe it will be equal to the menu! We enjoyed dining on weekends which gives you a vibe of a trendy pub in Indy or other large metro area and during the week the food and staff are just as accommodating as a swank out of the way upscale establishment. Every time we have had the pleasure of dining here we have been personally approached by one or both owners. One of our new favorite places! It's nice to not have to travel an hour or more to get such a great combination of fantastic food, assortment of craft beers on tap and a relaxing atmosphere. I wanted to like this place better than I actually did. I'd heard really good things about the food, and was excited to make the trip up to try it. The good--our server was fantastic! Friendly and knew the menu in and out. The not so good--I ordered a breaded tenderloin, my go to in a pub type setting. The meat was tender and moist, but the breading seemed devoid of any seasoning at all. Seriously bland. I ordered a side of fries, and they were cold to the touch when I received them. In a small town, they'll probably do quite well, but I don't see them being able to compete in a place like Indy. read more

I have been there more than once. It is a converted grain and feed building and they have done a wonderful job of renovating this location. The food has been consistently very good, the service has been consistently good and the drinks have been consistently very good. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. One of the signature appetizers is a pretzel stick with beer cheese dip, very good and worth the money to order. This restaurant has been hyped by about everyone I know. We finally had the opportunity to try this restaurant after attending an event in Marion. Even though, it was around 8:30pm when we arrived and with 1/4 of the table empty, it was still a 30 minute wait. Either they are understaffed or just want to keep the appearance of being too busy to seat people. The restaurant has a hip and modern feel. The decor is appealing. The overall look and feel goes along great with the Grains & Grill theme. Once we got a table, our server seemed pretty much apathetic to waiting on us like she didn't even want to be there. It was an acceptable level of service but it wasn't overly enthusiastic either. At our table, we ordered the special of the evening, which was a pan seared grouper fillet and a Hoosier Hotplate. We never did receive our bread, which was quite disappointing. The menu states that entrees will receive the bread and the Hoosier Hotplate item was just two items down from that verbiage on the menu. The portion for the nightly special was very small for the price - $33. It was cooked to perfection - flaky and melt in your mouth. However, it did not have much flavor. The sweet potatoes were good but the portions were so small, it was very disappointing. For $33, I would expect at least a hearty portion of the sides even if the entree was on the small side. My husband enjoyed his pork loin but said the Bonge's is much better. Overall, I was extremely disappointed in this restaurant that has been hyped by so many of my friends. We live 90 minutes away and are in the area a few times a year but we will not be going out of way to go here when there are much better places close to us. read more

Would have loved to try the food, but unfortunately the "Reservations and Call Ahead Seating" is a bit misleading. Called Thursday, early evening, and left a message requesting a Friday evening table. Hostess told us that they don't get around to checking the messages until the following day and they don't do same day reservations. Currently my VERY favorite restaurant. It is a 35-minute trip from our house so not an easy place to drop by -- but I love it. On one recent visit we had a party of 7, which relegated us to their second room -- really configured for banquets, not dinner; it is noisy and far from intimate. The more recent time we were there we sat in the dinner/bar area, which I like a lot. I had a small sirloin, which was terrific, as were the sides. Bread is a REAL treat. If you want a special evening, don't hesitate to reach out to G&G. Drinks: Most places have a "bartender" who in reality is nothing more than a beer jockey. On our very first visit there we got to meet the bartender. His passion and knowledge were quickly apparent. This man love his job and you can taste it with each sip. They also have their own brewery, which is young but shows great promise. If your a craft beer fan like me, they constantly have rotating taps, with a focus on local. The food. When you get right down to it, this is what it's all about. They have brilliant chef, and passionate cooks. Each person in that kitchen takes a lot of pride in what goes out the door. Here are a few of the highlights that I've had the privilege to enjoy. The 10 oz steak ~ amazingly tender, text book med-rare, seasoned to perfection. Oh and it's locally sourced and cut to G&G's standard. Garlic green beans~ didn't know a simple green bean could be this good. Cooked to aldente, hint of garlic that you don't regret. Meatloaf with sweet onion gravy and mashed potatoes ~ my knees bucled, I couldn't quit sampling my wife's plate. The Hoosier Hot Plate~ There's a reason this is a signature dish on their menu. The cream corn! I don't like cream corn. I LOVE their cream corn. I could eat it morning, noon, and night. Shrimp cocktail~ Best cocktail sauce this side of Ruth Chris steak house. The bread pudding~ Don't miss this! It's common to not order dessert when dinning out, don't make that mistake at G&G. I strongly suggest that you enjoy it with a little Four Roses. Finally the cost. They have a wide range of options, from the Hoosier Hot Plate (around $16) to the 40 oz tomahawk steak. Drinks, a craft beer can be had for $5 a pint or top shelf cocktails for around $10.
