Really good food. Simple breakfast. Nice atmosphere. Staff was really friendly for the majority of our breakfast. I paid with a different server than we had during our breakfast. She was kind and easy to deal with. As me and my elderly father walked out the door our original server came out and shouted that we needed to pay for our food. She did this in front of over a dozen patrons eating outside. I explained we had paid with the other server and she denied it and demanded we come back inside. She quickly realized our mistake and was very quiet with her apology. Really really embarrassing experience. Especially for my father. I had to show her my bank account in my phone to prove I paid for it. She admitted they were at fault but quickly brushed it off and went inside. Will definitely not be returning. Left a good tip too. I eat on the road a lot around Milwaukie, and do spend a lot of time doing work in restaurants. There are better places to linger, but there aren't better places for breakfast, value, service, or coffee. Coffee is the keystone of a breakfast joint. Gramma's moves through pots fast and is aggressive with refills. Thus, you get a lot of fresh, tasty drip. Fancy creamers available, the coffee doesn't need it since it's never old enough to get burnt. In terms of value, the most food for the buck in North Clack. Equivalent to Gateway Breakfast House; you can't do much better for bang for the buck. Service is friendly and remembers you even if you come here like once a month. Fantastic with food allergies in particular, and able to stack tables like a champ. Also, food comes out pretty quick without any sacrifice in... Quality. Gramma's shines at good, simple food. As discussed in value, the portions are big, the food really gets you properly fat, happy, and caffeinated, and you won't be hungry again for hours. My pass/fail for a place is the Denver omelet. This place does a land office business. 11 on a Friday and totally packed. Very clean. The wait staff is delightful, friendly, prompt, and cheerful. The cooking was decidedly mixed. My French toast was only cooked on one side. They did correct it cheerfully. One egg was perfectly over easy, the other was medium hard. One slice of bacon was fine, the other was mostly raw (I don't like overcooked bacon and this was too raw for me.) Overall, the food was nothing to write home about. My wife found this place on Yelp while searching for a place to get breakfast in the morning. We arrived in Portland very late and got settled into our hotel after midnight. We knew we would sleep in and arrived just about noon on a Friday. The restaurant is small but they also have outdoor seating. We were seated right away and provided menus. My wife told me that she had read many of the reviews complimenting the gravy so that helped me to chose the chicken fried steak special while my wife chose the Monroe omelet with German sausage. We also ordered a side of bacon. We also noticed they offer free coffee for veterans which is a nice touch. While we waited for our food there was a steady stream of to go orders being picked up. It also appears many of the customers are local because the staff knew them by name. Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked delicious. My wife did comment that she was expecting fresh jelly based on our server mentioning the various flavors when we ordered our meals but it was packaged jelly. Everything was piping hot and delicious. I've never ordered chicken fried steak and had it served in a bowl with the pieces already cut up but it was great. Only to walk in and sit down and moments later be greeted by the same young man that was just outside helping the woman to the car.
