They were absolutely delicious and surprisingly one of my favorite dishes of the night. We originally came for a girls' night focused on oysters, and it was the perfect spot. I loved their local PNW petite deep-cup oysters super fresh and delicious. My only note is that I wish they offered another mignonette option besides just hot sauce. The space is lovely and has such a cute vibe for a girls' night out. The service was amazing the wait staff was friendly, attentive, and gave great drink recommendations. Another bonus: it's not located right in central downtown, which actually made it so much easier to park. There was plenty of street parking around, which I really appreciated. It made the whole night feel more relaxed from the start. Everything we ordered was fantastic... and then dessert came. Their cheesecake was hands down the best cheesecake I've ever had. I had the Monsignor Murphy, which featured lots of House Made Pastrami, Swiss Cheese, Sauerkraut and Russian Dressing. I typically like a Reuben on marbled rye, as they served it on a Griddled Como Bread...and it was great. I didn't get her name at the order counter, but she was so friendly and engaging as well. Since this was my first time to the restaurant, she was able to provide me with a wealth of information. I will be back...and you can count on that.

As a kid, that meant climbing around the trucks, knowing the difference between a fire truck and a fire engine, screwing around in the long-gone handball court down at Station 1, and thinking firefighters were basically superheroes. Strong. Brave. Fearless. And sporting absolutely bad ass mustaches. (For those of you who don't know, a fire truck carries the ladders, and a fire engine carries the hose. Trust me, firefighters are very particular about the distinction. They're also surprisingly proud of hose size. Honestly, who doesn't want to ride in the vehicle with all the hose.) There was a period in American history where every firefighter looked like he was either fighting a five-alarm blaze or auditioning to be the next Dirk Diggler. Thick. Powerful. The kind of mustache that could put out a five-alarm blaze and still have enough left in the tank to offer free mustache rides to the neighborhood ladies. It was magnificent. So, when I heard pFriem was opening a brewery in Milwaukie's old firehouse, I knew I had to check it out. Not for the mustache rides, mind you. At this stage in life, I'm not offering them for free and I'm not looking to ride one. Not in this economy. The old firehouse has been transformed into an incredible space. Too many historic buildings get remodeled into something so generic that it could just as easily be a bank, the office for the city of Milwaukie, or a luxury apartment leasing center. Or they become a McMenamins. Not this place. The massive doors, high ceilings, and creative use of the firepole (without turning it into a strip club)...it still retains some of the charming characteristics of a firehouse. Just one where the emergency now involves deciding whether my liver can handle one more pint. And speaking of beer, pFriem is pFriem. Easily one of my top 5 favorite breweries. Plus, the food is excellent. Years ago, firefighters gathered here waiting for the next alarm. Later it became city offices, which is admittedly a less exciting use of a firehouse. Today, people gather here for great beer, good food, and conversation. Honestly, that's a pretty great third act for an old building. Five stars. Still no mustache rides, though.

We sat at the bar and were mostly ignored. My water glass stayed empty (had to ask for a refill). Beyond the lackluster service, the food wasn't good either. The meatball appetizer was the saddest, tiniest 3 meatballs for $16. If they tasted great, I'd be ok with the price but they had a watery flavorless tomato sauce and they were tiny and tasted like vinegar. I've never had vinegar meatballs so I'm not sure if this is normal? We also tried 3 different pastas. The spaghetti dish tasted like what I imagine a children's menu butter noodles at an Olive Garden might taste like. It was literally butter on noodles with a hint of lemon. For almost $30. The farfalle with lamb was salty and the noodles were overly Al dente. I appreciate Al dente noodles but not when it's hard in the middle of the bow tie. Our friend got the tagliatelle and it was bland. Not much veggies. My husband was still hungry after eating his whole plate of spaghetti so he finished our friend's tagliatelle and a quarter of my farfalle. It shouldn't take 2+ plates of pasta and an appetizer to fill someone up. I ended up making food when I got home about 2 hours later bc I was still hungry. On top of it all, 20% gratuity is included so I don't think the servers are trying like they would if they had to earn their tips. Overall, one of the biggest letdowns in SE so far. If you want to pay a lot of money to be ignored and leave hungry, you will love it here.

In order of least favorite to favorite, the little gem salad was good but just not that memorable or spetqcular the way the other dishes were. Next, the grilled oysters were flavorful with the garlic and lime but I wished there was a little more kimchi flavor and overall more sauce given the size of the oysters (they were huge!). The lobster roll was good and I appreciated the different take on a lobster roll but my favorite lobster rolls that really accentuate the lobster flavor and this masked it a little. The hamachi crudo was a surprise. It's a dish you see a lot and I was a little worried about how the pineapple might overtake the rest of the flavors but that didn't happen. The balance between sweet, savory, sour, and crunch from the peanuts was perfect and every bite was really enjoyable. Finally, my favorite was the cold smoked mussels. You never know how fish sauce and tom kha might overwhelm everything but again, their chef understands flavor balance really well. You could taste all the flavors, the smokiness, the slight bitter and sour umami flavors and slight sweetness to round it out. It was outstanding and highly recommend. Bastion definitely is part of what makes Portland's gluten free scene great! The location is in a beautiful small neighborhood in the city. Bastion sits among some small businesses and has the feel of a cozy business in a house. My absolute favorite thing about Bastion was their fried chicken. It was crispy and delicious. Often times gluten free items lack a bit of substance when it comes to how it feels, but the nice meaty chicken pieces really helped offset that in the case of the chicken sandwich. It was fulfilling to eat and would do a great job filling up anyone who is hungry. My wife went with the waffles and they were great. They were presented beautifully with a gorgeous flower garnish. If you want a nice IG picture, well, here you go! To wash it all down I tried their mango smoothie. And this thing was smooooooof. This was one of THE BEST smoothies I've had in a while and I would drive back up from Sacramento just to get this again. We loved our experience at Bastion and am sad to leave!

It was a little dry/not fresh tasting, even after I asked them to heat it up. It definitely has a healthy/homemade taste, probably that it was made with some type of wheat or oat flour. I also got the oat chia pudding to go (not pictured) and it was good too, still on the pricey side but at least the portion isn't tiny. Overall, the ambiance is nice for a cute brunch and I like that they supposedly use clean ingredients (no seed oils and refined sugar). The halibut was good but didn't stand out and the maple glazed carrots weren't to my taste. What completely won us over was the tres leches cake. It is one of the most delicious and most memorable desserts we've ever had. Every layer complemented the next perfectly creating an incredibly balanced dessert that wasn't overly sweet with different textures. We couldn't stop talking about it afterward. It was one of the reasons we decided to give the restaurant a second shot. It consisted of large overly soft chunks of beets with what tasted like a basic grocery store salad dressing. For a restaurant of this caliber I expected more. Neither of us enjoyed the cheese empanada but we both liked the beef empanada. We also ordered two filet mignons cooked the same way. Both arrived more done than requested and one way more overcooked than the other. They were also on the salty side, though both were very tender. The lamb shoulder, which our server had already warned us about before we ordered, ended up being dry and tough. The chimichurri served alongside the savory dishes was also heavier on onions than I prefer. Overall, the service was excellent, and the complimentary leek soup and tres leches cake were truly outstanding. Unfortunately, despite two visits, the main dishes we ordered didn't live up to the restaurant's reputation for us.

I probably wouldn't get the pork again because it was pretty dry but I would definitely come back to try more of their seafood offerings. The lemon curd peppercorn meringue was also delicious and was executed perfectly- such a unique combination.
