My wife and I stop here on a somewhat regular basis. We love the restaurant and the food selection. However, we have found that the service varies from the sublime to the ridiculous. You can never tell. Today, we stopped due to tremendous rain and found the service to be excellent, but the food lacking somewhat. I ordered the top sirloin and it was perfectly cooked but had too much pepper on the steak. The mashed potatoes and corn taskted very dry and passe. It was like these two items had been placed under the heating lamp for an extended period of time and they dried out. We had a waitress-in-training and she did an excellent job of serving us. We will always stop here when we have the time and the need. read more

I've stopped here many times on my way to South Dakota. I've never been disappointed. The food is very good! Just good old country cooking. this time I got the meat loaf and it's the best I've ever had! An all you can eat salad bar was included with the meal. This restaurant has a lot going for it as it is a "truck stop" - literally. Only a few things hold it back from five stars. Both my husband and I had the all you can eat ribs special. The ribs were great! The special offered a choice of potato, roll and the vegetable of the day. It happened that the vegetable was green beans, which were cooked fresh with a little bit of onion - quite yummy! Two downsides. Salad bar was extremely limited. Out of a dozen "choices" many were salad dressings and three were mayo based side dishes and one was a fluffy marshmallow dish (contra indicated in the well intentioned salad bar). And there were two pickled options (beats and cucumber salad.). The lettuce was pretty tired and past its prime. There were maybe 5 fresh vegetables on the entire bar. They'd be better off serving a well prepared small and simple side salad. The second downside. The establishment allows smokers to stand right outside the door. So going in and out requires you to walk through a cloud of smoke. Those who has read my previous posts know that being around cigarette smoke is my pet peeve. The server was quite nice. Went for lunch after finding it on the TV Food Map App. Not sure what is overly special about the place. It was good quality diner food but nothing impressive. The Chicken Fried Steak was good and my SO had the Smothered Chicken Sandwich, which was also good, but there was nothing exciting about this place that would make me recommend it to others. read more

Hot and a lot. If you say "I really love eggs" you get an additional egg for free. The Sunday buffet has a very big selection.

Went for brunch last Sunday. They had a lot of food, however, only the bacon on the buffet was any good. Got a piece of prime rib but ended putting in my shoe to cover a hole in the leather. It was that tough. not good at all. The brunch was $16.99. Based on another reviewer's price paid in 2010 I'm not sure where the over 100% inflation is coming from. Way over priced. Coffee was $1.89. are you kidding me. Although the waitress was nice she offered no relief for the bad meat price wise. Won't go there and recommend others do the same. read more

Good place to eat, hang out, meet new friends. The bar does close early! You never know when when they will close. If the bar tender wants to go home she'll call last call and kick you out. After driving through the night, Gramma's is our breakfast stop to kick off the last few hours of our drive. As you may or may not know, Gramma's is associated with the Machine Shed chain so similar menus. Kids seem to enjoy the pancakes and older one likes the veggie omelet. As for myself, I stick to the skillets since they have a good variety of ingredients. The waitstaff is always welcoming and attentive, but that may have to do with us showing up at 7am when they open. Lastly...they have good coffee...so for breakfast, this is definitely a good stop for us. read more

Went with friend after work on Friday at 5:50 p.m. The Gramma's side was full and had no tables, so we went to the Checkered Flag side and got a quiet table. Our waitress was right there with a jug of water, and menus both from Gramma's Kitchen and Checkered Flag Bar & Grille. I decided on their famous meatloaf featured on The Travel Channel with veggie of the day and mashed potatoes and gravy. My friend ordered the liver and onions dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy. Salad bar comes with the meals and it was very nice. It was about half way between Gramma's and Checkered Flag off the main hallway. Decorated with an old 1940's stove that held the soup of the day (Chicken Noodle- excellent and home made you could tell). The fixin's on the salad bar were the usual iceberg mixed also with spring green mix to make it a little fancier. There was shredded cheese, fresh mushrooms, red onion, diced hard boiled egg, green peppers, celery, grape tomatoes, cucumber, peas, etc. Also had some homemade salads such as pea salad, potato salad, pasta salad, and broccoli salad, and a crock of delicious pickled beets. The pea salad had some smoked diced ham in it that overpowered it and made it all taste like a BBQ smokehouse. But everything else was fresh and very good. Our dinners came fairly quickly and I was shocked when she put down the plate with two 3/4" slabs of meatloaf on the plate along with fresh green beans, sauteed onions, and mashed potatoes and gravy. I had opted to not have gravy over both potatoes and meat because our waitress explained there was a baked ketchup topping on the meatloaf like my mom's, and I wouldn't want gravy all over that. Some people do though. His entree had two huge slices of liver, fried perfectly, with piles of sauteed onions all over, green beans, and mashed potatoes and gravy. A plate with two fresh baked, warm, dinner rolls with real butter. Both of us knew we neither were going to be able to finish all that food, especially with already having salad bar. I commented I really didn't need two huge slabs of meatloaf and our waitress, Cheyanne, just smiled and said, " Welcome to Gramma's!" I attempted at least one piece of meatloaf and half the potatoes. You could tell they were real since there were still little lumps of potato in them. The gravy though was a little coagulated but good anyways. We got refills on pops, and Cheyanne stopped by two other times to see how we were and got take home boxes. I had saved a little room because I had seen a picture of their homemade coconut creme pie on Yelp earlier in the day. We shared a piece and oh it is worth every bite. From scratch crust, thick vanilla custard, toasted coconut and twice the size of Village Inn for the same price. Finally we decided to waddle out for home and we both agreed on a 25% tip for Cheyanne. Been a long time since had a server like her, witty, laughing, knowledgeable of menu, and on top of everything including 3 other tables we saw. We kind of referred to this place as a mini Machine Shed. Its little sister actually. Both are Heart of America Group locations. We both have a lunch in the fridge for this weekend now thanks to their huge portions. read more

Sitting in my car writing this review. The salad bar was warm, lettuce and cucumbers brown and no chicken in chicken soup. My med rare arrived rare and mooing and was told by mngr that was med rare. I was done before it came back and my guest meal was overdone and and hard. Let's not forget the vacuuming next to our table while eating. Would go across street to truck stop. read more

We try and get out to Gramma's about every other month ... or if company is in town. The pork tenderloin is excellent ... get it breaded instead of grilled ... coleslaw side is also great. I usually either cut off the excess around the bun and save that or eat that and take the whole sandwich home. Ya gotta be a big eater to finish it in one sitting! Its well worth the drive we make from Riverside to Walcott and back! They also have a very nice (not overpriced) selection of "down home remember back when" items for sale along with the usual T-shirts and caps. If you need more you can drive across the street (after eating and watch out for the truck traffic) to the Route 80 truck-stop ... If they don't have it you don't need it! read more

We are from Wisconsin and we make it a point to travel so that we get there at lunch time. We think the food is great. The salad bar is always filled with very fresh vegetables and the soup is great. The service is wonderful and everybody is very accommodating. Great value. We will continue to make this one of our travel destinations. read more

We stopped here for breakfast on the was home to Pennsylvania. The decor was great! Lots of cute country and kittish items to choose from. The food was pretty good. We all got something different in order to try several items. I personally had the Mother Hubbard's Cupboard with a hash brown casserole and biscuits and gravy. The omlette was very good. I wasn't thrilled with the hash brown casserole nor the biscuits and gravy. I felt the casserole was a little dry and the biscuits and gravy were spicier than needed. BUT I still didn't think they were "terrible".. with regards to the other items from the other diners...The smoked breakfast sausage is amazing! Possibly some of the best I've ever tried. The regular hash browns were very good as well. The pancakes were filling and delicious.. Overall we all left full and satisfied. Our waitress Audi was super sweet and very attentive. We enjoyed having her very much. We will probably stop here again when we come back through in May. read more

We stopped here at random on our way to Cedar Rapids, and we were so impressed! The restaurant has a cute gift shop, relaxed feel, excellent service, and delicious food. The waitress was very friendly, and she often thought of things before we asked for them. I had the fried pork tenderloin sandwich and potato soup. Both were really wonderful. We ended our meal with cinnamon ice cream, and others had one of their many selections of pie. They also had a great add-on salad bar. We all enjoyed our visit! read more

This place was so "cute". I love the idea of homemade food in a cozy diner. Our service was great. The food wasn't. We wanted to like it but it fell flat. The pancakes were just short of being burnt. The biscuits needed a hammer to break. The fish wasn't good. The potato soup was really good. The desserts looked amazing!! Hopefully, we just stopped on an off day. The atmosphere of an old style diner is too fun for bad food. I wonder if the should scale down their menu and hone in on their best offerings. read more

High prices. Poor customer service. We (adults) are vegetarians and asked for no bacon on top of the potato soup. The menu did not say there is bacon IN the soup itself. We were told by the server that there is no bacon with the soup at this time because it was LENT. Halfway through the soup I realize I am eating bacon. Also, We asked for a combination kids meal of a burger with a side of mac and cheese. Apparently this was difficult so I said it's ok just bring the burger and fries kids meal with a side order of mac and cheese. They came out with a burger and a bowl of mac and cheese on the same plate (as I had originally asked), no fries or other side orders but charged us for TWO kids meals when, in reality, they served two HALF kids meals. I asked to have one of the meals removed from our $60 lunch bill (2 adults, 2 kids, only one of us ordered an entrée). They insisted that mac and cheese and a hamburger were both two different meals and they had to charge me thusly. I could not get them to understand that they did not serve two whole kids meals, it was one 4 year old and it all came on one plate. Two halves equal one whole. I would have paid for two whole meals if they had brought two whole kids meals. People were waiting in line behind me. The manager blamed their difficulties on "corporate sets the prices". I am sure "corporate" would like them to put customer service first. I was not asking for anything other than to pay only for what I received and not more. My husband stated that the food was cold. The salad bar is minimal for the price. We will not be back. read more

Favorite stopover on the way to Iowa City. Friendly and efficient staff. Dining area and restroom was very clean. Little country store is lovely. There are quite a few local and made in USA items. Food is better than average for this type of casual dining. read more
