I love this place and look forward to stopping for the Triple D pork tenderloin every trip. We'd figure they were going to take some covid precautions...but I was wrong. Most restaurants and nation stores are requiring masks to enter and until you sit down. No one had masks on from the General Manager, Cashier and waitresses. The baked potato soup was really creamy and the potatoes were cooked perfectly. We got (2) pork tenderloins and loved them. They are not really think and have a tempura type batter. I stopped for my 34 hour reset at a flying J across from the worlds largest truck stop... second time I've stayed here.... I decided to have breakfast Sunday morning looking for a good meal so I walked over to Gramma's Kitchen.... It's nice and cozy inside, clean. Staff was nice just not very fast about getting me to a table and very laze fair about their motions.... Anyway I ordered a chicken fried steak, biscuits and gravy which comes with 2 eggs and hash browns.... I had to get a side of corn beef hash too... I know I know that's a lot of food... I dug in... I didn't know they had rubber chickens in iowa... the chicken fried steak was chewy and a lil burnt... so I say overcooked! The gravy with the biscuits was not good... but the biscuits themselves were fluffy and good... the best part was the corn beef hash and eggs... hard to F' that up.... That being said, the wait staff was extremely friendly and the food was decent. Probably worst meal I've ever had period!!! My 4 year old wouldn't even eat the French fries. We came because they said they had a salad bar with fresh fruits. The salad bar was vey disgusting looking so we decided to try chicken tenders and fries for our daughter and cheese curds and pretzels (should be safe, right?), needless to say we ate hardly anything and left 90% of our food. I see that I forgot to post my October review of Gramma's Kitchen at the Walcott, Iowa exit of I-80. Here 'tis: We have a couple of favorite stops on I-80 when we drive from Des Moines to Illinois, and Gramma's Kitchen has probably received most of our visits. Just across the street from the Iowa 80 Truck Stop (billed as the world's largest truck stop) Gramma's Kitchen is a masterpiece of rural kitsch, featuring toys, gizmos, refrigerator magnets, wooden plaques and other stuff that is supposed to give the tourists the feel of being in a down-home corn-fed environment. And a big contributor to that down-home feeling is the restaurant's food. No kale, no edamame (or green soybeans as they're called here) no arugula, tofu or pomegranate juice. This is the kind of food that my own grandma cooked fifty years ago, and it's cooked very well. Today it was chicken-fried (or country-fried) steak. Absolutely perfect! Fork-tender with soda cracker breading, real mashed potatoes, not whipped, with chunks of potato therein, green beans with bacon and real cream gravy with sausage bits. YUMMM! Service is sometimes slow, but always attentive, and the salad bar is your ordinary iceberg lettuce, etc., salad bar. But the meatloaf, the fried chicken, the chicken-fried steak -- they are beyond compare. I think there is also a bar, but when I go to Gramma's my focus is on food, and the only drinks I want are good water and excellent coffee. So when you're on I-80, stop in a set a spell. My wife and I were on a bit of an Iowa pilgrimage to visit the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk in nearby Riverside, and decided to visit Gramma's Kitchen. I'm glad we made this stop--because it was a fantastic experience. Essentially two restaurants in one, there's a family side and a more bar and grille side. We sat in he bar and grille side. Our server couldn't have been more friendly! Finding out we were from out of town, we connected immediately and were made to feel at home. I already knew what I wanted...the breaded tenderloin. I may not know much, but I know tenderloins. I wasn't disappointed. Fried perfectly, it was a nice, hearty meal without being overwhelming. The meat was moist and tender and the breading perfectly complimented the pork. Holly had a steak, and it was cooked to order. Came here on my way home from Omaha, Neb, located conveniently off highway 80, Iowa's "World largest truck stop." Their claim to fame was the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pork was fried to perfection, and very tender, would definitely have this sandwich again, I did not even add any condiments to the sandwich. We also tried their potato soup with bacon, which was fairly good, and their Bavarian pretzels with beer cheese also very good. The pretzel had a nice salty and buttery flavor very warm and soft in the middle. For dessert we shared a coconut cream pie, to our surprise very light and the crust was not heavy at all. Stopped here with my family on a road trip from New York. My daughter ordered the kids Mac and cheese, it was just regular boxed Mac and cheese so can't really go wrong except it was a little burnt, and the French fries were delicious. My son ordered a personal pizza he ate it but said he didn't care for the cheese that was on it. The adult Mac and cheese was homemade and was very good. I had the "as seen on travel channel" pork sandwich. The pork was cooked PERFECTLY however it was a little bland, but with some bbq sauce it was delicious. The waitress was extremely nice and personable, the little shop attached is cute and the decor is fun. A good place to stop on a road trip and would stop again if we made the same trip. read more

The cheese curds were the best! Lightly battered and decent amount for price. The pot roast was delicious; and was perfect for this cold and rainy night. As self-proclaimed potato critics, it was upsetting to have dry and sticky mashed potatoes accompany such tasty roast. They are most definitely made with water - not milk - and are without butter. We accidentally passed the exit and turned around and back tracked to go to Grandmas Kitchen. We were greeted and quickly seated. Our server, Corrine, also known as "Lil Bit" recommended we try the meatloaf and the pork tenderloin sandwich. With a diverse menu that included pizzas and enchiladas the decision was a tough one but we placed our faith in "Lil Bit". The food was well prepared, delivered quick and with a smile. My dad ordered the fried chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and chicken graves. And I got some salad with quesadillas on the side. My dad enjoyed his meal. My quesadillas weren't cooked at all really but I mostly just wanted the salad anyways. But when you come in they'll either it you on the side with the tv or the side with the salad bar. Tracy told me to squeeze my breasts. Still waiting for that 18 hour smoked brisket, only have 7 hours to go. My buddy got ribs and it only took 6 hours, I'm jealous.
