I have been putting off writing this review. When things are really good, it's easy and fun to write about an experience. When things are challenging, you just kind of want to forget about them. The restaurant was clean. The food was ok. The service ruined this experience for everyone at the table. Yes, I still left 20% because it's the right thing to do, and I can't imagine her circumstance, well, let me tell you what happened. Amy and I both have birthdays within a few weeks of each other. We decided to meet an old friend and this was the place she chose. When I say old, I do mean elderly. I haven't known her that long. She is very sweet though, but I digress. Other tables had a dedicated server. We did not. We had the bartender. That was weird. She came and took our order, she brought us our food, but if you needed absolutely anything - you had to go to the bar, wait for her to stop making drinks and then ask for your napkins, drink refill, or bubble tea, and in my case it was all 3. And no- despite it being on the specials sign, they don't have bubble tea. I was not offered an alternative. I'm so glad I stood there waiting at the bar while my friends ate. This is probably the worst service I've ever encountered. It's probably not even her fault. Who in their right mind would schedule like that? I'm betting someone called out. That didn't make it better. It definitely does not make me want to go back. She poured water on my Mexican pizza after she sat the pizza down for me. She didn't offer to grab me a new one. She just said "oh sorry" and quickly walked back to the bar. I sat there dumbfounded. My friends had a lot to say. I ate the part that wasn't wet. Man... What a disappointment. I can honestly say Taco Bell Mexican pizza is better. I wish we went anywhere else. Amy got sour cream on her food and she had initially asked for none. This place has really bad food. I have send this place for years and always wondered how the food was. I'm mad I stopped in. This place had bbq chicken tacos and other off tacos that's weren't what I was looking for. I ordered the chicken and steak fajitas and the food was kinda burnt. They overcooked it. The rice wasn't really appetizing and the salsa was very much lacking. They didn't have any other salsas or a spicy one. So they said they had hot sauce. Very disappointing. The corn tortillas were not good. They need to actually cook them because these taste like they just heated them. The pico was not pico. Just chopped tomatoes. Cute spot in clawson to get some yummy Mexican food! We were greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, which is always a huge plus! We ordered right away and it took a really long time for our food to come out. It was a slow Sunday evening. We saw tables who got there after us get their food before us. We finally asked after around 40 mins of waiting and our food came out right away but no one acknowledged it. Either way, the food was good. Trying to find a great Mexican place in Clawson is like trying to find a unicorn. There ain't none. Just kidding, it's alright. Walking in, the place felt quite American for a Mexican place. Just based on the workers, the vibe (unusual for a Mexican place), which consisted of stained smooth wood and painfully boring seats and tables, but the food was all I cared about. I was craving there Birria Tacos, which were quite refreshing, stuffed me pretty quick. Not enough for me to try the Sofrito Enchiladas, SUPER salty and it had my mouth feel wet and dry at the same time. The service was honestly kinda sloppy. They felt fed up, since they are working a Saturday, but still, it could've been better. The lady that led me to the bathroom was quite sweet though. As a California native, it does not quite meet my expectations for Mexican food, but it's decent. The chicken in my enchiladas was very tender and not dried out, but the poblano sauce was a bit muted in flavor and overpowered by the cheese. The rice and beans were great. It's possible that this was just a bad day, because I've eaten here in the past and it's been fabulous. I ordered carryout of steak and chicken fajitas, and a side of guacamole and chips. When I got home and opened up the package, the first thing I noticed is that I didn't get any tortillas. When I opened up the accoutrements for the fajitas, everything was missing (the sour cream, all the toppings that go on the fajitas) except a double portion of white rice, and a small handful of shredded lettuce. When I opened up the bag of corn chips to eat some guacamole, all the chips were crumbled little pieces. I called the restaurant to tell them that I was missing the tortillas, the sour cream, and all the toppings for the fajitas. I spoke with the manager, who told me that Vera, our order-taker was new, and that she had already left for the day. She told me that nobody had access to her sign in, and it would take her at least an hour to figure out how to get into her sign in, to verify that we actually placed an order. She told me that I could send an email and include pictures and the main manager would figure out what to do. In the meantime, I'm left with eating the meat pieces all by themselves after paying $32 for dinner, and tipping them too! Note: manager just called. Food was above average and definitely worth coming here for. I'm always leery when a spot is so big if the food would just be bland but this was not the case. We had a larger party and two of us got there earlier and decided to sit at the bar as we waited. This was the only real negative; there was a bar tender who was definitely busy, but in ten minutes never once looked up and even said hello. Very awkward non interaction. But the spot is huge, tons of seating inside and outside. It's definitely a cool place for larger gatherings. Even with our larger party, food was out promptly and the chips and queso/salsa kept us busy. The fish tacos were awesome. Multiple Mistakes and I Still Left Hungry My husband and I have visited Mojave Cantina several times before and have generally had a good experience, which is why tonight was so disappointing. We arrived around 8:30pm on a Sunday (the restaurant is open until 10pm), so it wasn't even close to closing. I ordered a chicken burrito, which I've had there before. What came out was a beef burrito. Our waitress acknowledged the mistake and even told us she had clearly ordered chicken, so the error appeared to come from the kitchen. About five minutes later, a replacement burrito came out -- but it was cold. Not lukewarm... actually cold. After taking one bite it was obvious it hadn't been properly heated. To their credit, the waitress spoke with the manager and removed the $16 meal from the bill and gave me a $10 gift card, which I did appreciate. However, I specifically asked that the burrito simply be reheated so I could still eat it, because at that point I was still hungry. After waiting about 10 minutes, nothing came out. When I flagged the waitress down to ask about it, she told me she never sent it back to the kitchen because the item had been removed from the bill and she assumed I didn't want it anymore. That assumption was never confirmed with me, even though I had clearly asked for it to be reheated. The manager did come over and apologize, but when we explained the situation -- that someone should have confirmed whether I still wanted the food -- she didn't offer any solution and simply walked away. So the final result of the evening was: - Wrong meal served - Replacement meal served cold - Request to fix it never sent to the kitchen - I ultimately left the restaurant hungry and had to stop somewhere else for food afterward The drinks were good, but my husband described his meal as mediocre at best. Mistakes happen at restaurants, and most people understand that. The real issue was how the situation was handled after the mistakes occurred. At no point did it feel like anyone was truly focused on making the experience right. If you're considering eating here later in the evening, I would honestly think twice. Based on this experience, it felt like the kitchen and staff were simply no longer concerned about getting orders right. I'd like to believe this was just an off night, but the way it was handled makes that hard to believe. I saw the sign " voted best Mexican restaurant" and went on that. I wish I read the reviews. First, I'm a born Texan, I grew up on excellent Mexican food. Second, the staff were very attentive and caring. So this is not about them or the aesthetic of the restaurant. It's about the food. It was so bland. There was absolutely no seasoning. The roja sauce was just tomato paste, the guacamole didn't stand out, the chips were not seasoned, the one salsa offered with the chips was fresh, but no seasoning. It was bland and boring. We got there early and many of their customers seemed to be older, as was my 90 year old mom, but she eats spicier food than this. I ordered the black beans and corn side. Well, that was what it was. No seasoning, mostly cooked beans and corn, whoopee. No lime, no peppers. Saddest thing, my mom goes out 1-2 times a month and she wants to enjoy a nice drink. The margarita: it felt like with the ice cubes, they scooped out a greater volume of melted ice water. I love tequila; I couldn't taste any alcohol. Nor could my 90 yo mom. I saw the reviews and I didn't heed the warning signs. Decided to try Mojave on a whim, despite the meh reviews, and unfortunately it lives up to the reputation. It wasn't too busy when we walked in and we were seated right away, and service was pretty quick. However, the food was not good. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. I had the chicken enchiladas with poblano sauce and they were flavorless. The chicken and the tortillas were good, but it didn't have any kind of spice or flavor in the sauce to bring it all together. I also had a cup of tortilla soup, which was decent. A bit watery but not bad. My husband had the taquitos as his meal and it was okay. Again, lacking flavor and spice. I think this would be a good restaurant for someone who has little to no spice tolerance and enjoys more Americanized Mexican food. read more

Our party of 12 had reservations for Sunday dinner after a high school graduation ceremony. The service was so bad. The waitress brought out dip flights without chips, which we had to remind her were missing. Food was served at different times (almost 20-30 minutes apart), was cold, flavorless, and one person never got a meal as she forgot to ring it in. The graduate had already left after 1 hour of waiting for everyone to be served and people in our party were still waiting for food well after her departure. One meal was served with the incorrect protein and rather than remaking, they scooped it out and added a different one. No regard for allergies, plating appearance, or overall customer satisfaction. After well over $350 in expenses, we were given a $10 gift card for the inconvenience. The manager did her best to rectify the experience, but the damage was already done. What should've been a celebratory meal for our family turned into a disaster. Mojave Cantina isn't too far from Birmingham, but I'd rather drive around the corner to MEX (which is virtually in our backyard and has far superior customer service) from here on out. read more

What we got: Two very small flour tortillas with tiny pieces of fish, a little cabbage that had no lime or cilantro taste, and a ton of basically tartar sauce. The Remoulade Sauce was not good. I'm a huge fan of savory and juicy burritos and this wasn't it. The carnitas wet burrito was average to what I usually prefer. The burrito mainly consisted of beans with unmarinated chicken and costed me $18. The green salsa that made the burrito "wet" was so-so but could've been better. Most of the flavor was on the outside and wasn't up to par for an explosion flavor I was looking for. I'd prefer the focus at the center of the course with the inside of the burrito being paid the most attention. To me, this burrito would be worth $10 so the $18 price tag seemed excessive relative to other Mexican/Spanish eateries. Having said that, the sit down place and the lighting is well enough for a good sit down. Parking is private and is right next to the place so points for that. read more

The cool to cold back room we were sat in along with the slow pace of the service caused our frozen feet by the end of the meal. The food was average at best and the size of the portions meant they could be shared or half taken home for another meal. My shrimp quesadilla was good even warmed up the next day. The one mixed drink, a blood orange martini was mixed strong and the person was glad the meal went long so she could drive home. While I will be the first to tell you Mexican food isn't even near top of my favorites, many of the group normally love it. All glad we tried it and might come back on a very warm summer day to try it again. read more

I hate that I have to give a nasty review of this place, but their website has an email address for comments/complaints and I imagine the person who will respond will be the same manager who was working at the restaurant last night when we were there. So, this is the best option. We had a party of six for dinner on Sunday, 08/18/24 at 4:00 PM. Our waiter's body was present, but his mind was off in Cloud Koo Koo Land. The manager should've sent him home-there were plenty of waiters working who could've covered for him. My wife and mom ordered one order of chicken fajitas to split, but he brought two orders of chicken fajitas. So, we paid double for this and I asked him to box it up if he was going to toss it out. The young lady who was running food for him brought the food to our table and he and her proceeded to have a discussion about the error. He went back to the register and found out that he had made an error when he put both orders into the machine, but he did not correct his errors. He brought us drinks, but we had to ask for straws. He disappeared for two minutes and came back with straws. I asked him for our son's missing kid's taco and he said it'll be up soon. The taco came to our table right after that and he came back to our table to tell us they were still working on it. My dad told him we had it already-our son was halfway through eating it. Several tables had no customers with lots of dirty plates/silverware. There were multiple waiters aimlessly wandering the restaurant with nothing in their hands, so I'm not sure why they weren't helping each other out. We have been to Mojave Cantina several times before and the food was just as tasty as we remembered. Our bill came and we were charged for three lemonades, but we only ordered two and they were included with our kids' meals. Also, we never ordered the extra chicken fajitas, so my wife had to go to the bar and ask the bartender to correct the bill, which she did and the three lemonades and chicken fajitas were removed. It was an absolute dope show. Our waiter lacked basic communication skills-he didn't know what questions to ask or how to give good customer service. I'm not sure why he was working this job because he was mentally checked out before we arrived at the restaurant. The only time we saw the manager was when were getting in our car in the parking lot and she was sitting down texting and smoking a cigarette. There was a time when a waitress was whispering to someone through a crack in a door near the bathroom. I don't know what they were talking about, but if that was the manager in that room, what was she doing? The restaurant was starting to get busy, so they needed all hands on deck. I always drive by Mojave's patio on 14 Mile, and I live in the area; I finally got to try the (indoor seating) tonight with a friend who also lives in Clawson. We showed up around 4:45pm because we wanted to see if there were any happy hour deals - there are, but it's only on drinks, and it's until 6pm. They had $7 sangria and I believe margaritas; the sangria is $8.50 normally so it's only a little bit of savings, but I ordered the Strawberry Peach sangria and it was delicious. My friend had the Blackberry sangria and later an Apple Cider one and said both were good. For meals, I was going to get the street tacos, which come with two tacos, or the three regular flour tacos meal, but my friend got fajitas with shrimp, and I haven't had fajitas in a while; I ended up ordering the steak/chicken fajitas. They come out sizzling and the portion is HUGE - I ate maybe 1/3 of it and I have enough meats and veggies left for about 1-2 more meals (lunch tomorrow for sure, and possibly lunch the next day too!). It also comes with your choice of side, but I don't like beans, so I just ordered a double serving of the Spanish rice instead, which was just okay. You can also choose from beans + cilantro rice. Mojave is not cheap - the fajitas start at $16.50, for chicken (but you do get a HUGE portion), and steak or steak/chicken is $17.50. The tacos were about $12.50-$13.50. My friend and I both asked for extra tortillas to take home and we noticed there was a $2 charge tacked on to the bill for them. However, service was excellent - our server was Britney, according to the receipt (I'm terrible with names) - and the atmosphere was nice. My boyfriend and I ate there yesterday. I liked my chiles rellenos stuffed with queso blanco. My boyfriend ordered the tostadas with chicken and cilantro lime rice. The tomatoes on the tostada were sour; like they were leftover from a few days ago stored in their juice which had turned sour. He had me taste them and they were awful. His rice was totally undercooked and hard. He would not even let me taste it. We also ordered guacamole to go with the salsa and chips they bring to the table. The guacamole was good and so was the salsa but the chips were pretty tasteless. The food was like glorified bar food. I was there this evening, and a young mom was there with her baby. The baby started crying and the mom was clearly struggling and did everything to calm her baby. The owner came over and started yelling at her at the table - saying that the baby was chasing away all his customers. The mom then took the baby outside and the owner followed her. He appeared to be yelling at her outside. When she came back in- the mom was now crying. We were shocked at how she was treated. I have 2 kids and anyone with kids understands babies cry. She left as to not disturb everyone, but the way he yelled at her and then continued to yell at her outside - I will NEVER give him our business again!!
