I'm giving 5 stars because the food was all really good. Service was a little lacking, but the decor and vibe of the place was nice. Went for my birthday- my family reserved in advance and told them it was my birthday, but the server didn't even mention it :(. Service was also just not very attentive or friendly throughout. The tables themselves have great lighting at night so you can get really great shots of what you're eating. Now onto the food. I LOVED the white bean(?) appetizer. Would highly recommend ordering that. We ordered 4 different pizzas from the menu (and the marg twice) and they were all very tasty. I personally liked the marg, one with pepperoni and arugula pizza the most. All appetizers were great, the Caesar salad was really yummy and they're generous with the cheese. Their version of a garlic ish bread was also very good, just a little small when you're with a big party. Would recommend and come back, hopefully you have friendlier service. I will be honest Grana Pizza Napoletana did not live up to my expectations in the great pizza city that Portland is. I love love all kids of pizza, and the day before had Dimo's Apizza. Recently I've had Una Pizza Napoletana in NYC, both were far and away better than Grana Pizza Napoletana. Somehow the star of the show was the shisito peppers and fennel salad, both absolutely great. I would come back for them, but the problem is the wines to accompany them aren't good, and the pizza is just good enough. Now I love wine with my pizza, I think the menabrea they have is a great option, but if I want a super tuscan that tastes good, let's have that. Instead the wine options all feel too young, and not exciting. I'm not opposed to table wine, but none of this hit in the way you'd want it to. The salads were truly amazing, I'd eat that fennel salad every day and not get bored of it. The chicory caesar was good but not great. The shishito peppers with yogurt were amazing, and the seasoning was so tasty. We got four pizzas, to try as many as we could. The Pesto pizza was good, but not as pesto-y as I would want. It had crust that maybe held up the best. The Diavola wasn't spicy, was way too sweet, and didn't hold up well at all from a crust-tegrity perspective. The Wurst was tasty, but again was a soggy pizza, and the pancetta pizza I believe was our fourth, which was good, not great. If any one aspect was better I think we would have gone with a 4 star rating, but with bad wine, and soggy pizzas we just didn't find it worth returning to. Amazing everything! We always take friends and family here to have a good time and good eats. Such a nice welcoming and cozy place. It's always busy so make sure you make reservations! I recommend sitting at the bar, you can watch how the magic happens! They are always consistent with their quality and service. You will never have a disappointing time. FYI, it appears you have a better chance of eating here if you have a reservation. My girlfriend and I arrived as a walk-in Sunday night and originally were told it would be a 30 minute wait, which we were fine with, but a table freed up and we were seated minutes after we put our names down, so that's greatly appreciated! I'm not sure I understand how the service is set up, but we never had a dedicated server, it was just the nice lady at the front that checks people in that served us food. Not a huge deal! Menu is teeny tiny, location is teeny tiny, but food is bomb. We started with the endive salad and let me say, if you're a salt lover, you will LOVE THIS. It was exquisite. For our mains, I ordered the Funghi pizza and my friend got the Diavola. They bring your pizza with scissors to cut it which is fun. Pizza was DELISH. Crust is chewy and airy, the toppings are dense and sooooo good. I've been to Grana several times before and have brought friends and co-workers in the past, every visit has been great. This time was extra special because I finally brought my husband. Coming from an Italian family, he's very apprehensive about trying new pizza places and has very high expectations. We ended up having such a great dinner. He ordered the Margherita pizza and told me it's the best pizza he's had in Portland, which says a lot. This time around I tried the Cipollina, which I personally didn't love, the onion flavor was very strong and ended up upsetting my stomach a bit, but that's definitely a me-problem. Next time, I'll just order a different pizza. I still love the space just as much as before: very cozy with great vibes. The service and attention are excellent. If you are in the area this is a must try! Open nightly and reservations strongly encouraged. This place is cozy, charming and makes amazing food. The pizza is cooked to order with fresh dough in a high heat fire oven. The options are unique and making a decision is not easy. We started with the endive which is great for sharing, so much flavor! Italian red wine and pizza ... diavola, funghi and nonna were our choices tonight. We all shared. The nonna was my favorite. Had been eagerly waiting to try Grana and finally made it in last week for an evening dinner. All in a lovely meal and great atmosphere. I will start by saying definitely make reservations ahead of time. We had one, but sitting at the front of the restaurant we counted at least about dozen parties come in and then proceed to leave after hearing about the hour plus wait. The atmosphere is lovely inside. The tones are warm, the art is nice, and the pink tile lines the back while by the pizza oven. We were sat unfortunately at the very first table which is typically not my preference but I understand given the time of day. The chef's counter looked like a fun option if you wanted to mingle a little more and the owner I believe was the one cooking up the pies which is awesome. Food overall was super tasty. It's a lighter and doughier pizza than folks are maybe used to. Certainly more authentic neopolitan style. The flavors were rich and tasty. Dough had good flavor and the tomato sauce you could just tell was fresh. We wound up getting two pizzas and an app which I think is the right amount for two folks to share. The white bean spread was a delicious starter and came with tasty bread. Service all around was great. Wait staff were kind and efficient. We'd been wanting to try Grana for a bit & will definitely be back! The interior is simple but cozy with a laid back welcoming feel. We had a reservation & snagged a nice quiet table against the wall near the counter. It was full when we arrived, but not too loud which was great. If you're able to make a reservation in advance it'll save you from waiting, it's a small space so it seemed to be a bit of a wait for walk-ins during the rush. The food was as good as we'd hoped. The Caesar was a lighter take on the classic, love that it wasn't totally saturated in heavy dressing. We ordered two pies, both very different & both delicious. My favorite was the Diavola, wonderful flavor with a hint of heat! These are definitely pizzas where the crust is worthy of being eaten. Most recently I was getting a pie solo and the hostess told me it would be a wait for takeout, "so would you like to eat here and sit outside?" I'm sat at a two-top set for one patron only and she comes out saying this other single woman needed my table, and pulled out the extra chair from the table - and planted it by the tree in the sidewalk - and told me I could wait there (!). Completely threw me off and was inappropriate. She eventually got my order back to to-go instead, but it was incredibly confusing and awkward. If you are not reserving a table for a celebration with others, don't expect much consideration. I tipped because she was young, but the whole interaction makes me want to take it back. Pizza is my absolute fave food. Grana is a lovely restaurant tucked close to the 28th corridor of restaurants. With no reservation we were quoted a 45 minute wait on a Sat night. With plenty of bars around we headed to one to enjoy a drink. They text you when the table is ready which is super convenient. There were plenty of tables outside so I regret waiting an hour for an indoor table, but the restaurant is so inviting inside. We shared two pizzas, a white bean antipasto and two glasses of "red wine." They have a number of bottles and then a red, white or prosecco for individual glasses. The red was a cheap Italian varietal and not very good. The white bean antipasto was absolutely delicious and a very generous portion. The pizza itself had a nice flavor to the dough and toppings. The margarita was a bit sparse on toppings, but I liked the flavor nonetheless. The deal breaker was the cook on the pizza. It was very undercooked and raw dough in many parts. Grana adheres to the rule of thumb of having a small menu to ensure that everything is done right. They truly pull it off. My only quibble can be found outside the doors - parking in this neighborhood always seems to be a challenge. The large parking lot on this block is designated for the other businesses, and street parking can be highly unpredictable. But once you've found your way inside, all is well. Service is attentive but never hovering, the space is bright and comfortable, and the food is fantastic. We tried two different pizzas, neither with red sauce, and they were delightful. One of those difficult reviews: pizza is definitely one of the best in Portland, but service needs an adjustment. If you want customers to check-in first before ordering and paying via your stupid QR code when sitting outside then I suggest some signage. Our misunderstanding of this non-stated rule resulted in the female "hostess" sporting a major attitude the rest of the meal, she just couldn't let it go. Not one outside table was taken, so we sat, we ordered via your low-touch system (you know, provided revenue to your business), we got reprimanded. We apologize for our crime. That said. the fennel citrus salad was wonderful. And the pizza with dill, egg, and prosciutto was excellent. I can't think of a better wood fired/Napoli style pizza in town, and I've had many. This is meant to be eaten very hot, but the light and airy crust still retains is softness when cooled. Unlike the aforementioned employee, the guy who brought the salad was very pleasant. I don't get the buzz around this place. It's supposed to be one of the best pizzas in the world? It's not even the best in this part of town. And neither is it one of the best of its style -- wood-oven Neapolitan -- in town. (I would put Otto's, the Turning Peel and Pyro ahead of it in the Neapolitan category.) The pizza is kinda soft and doughy. The atmosphere is upscale from when this was a Pizzicato. Now it's a date place. I got my pizza to go, so maybe I missed out on the other joys of dining there. It seemed cozy and romantic. The servers seemed friendly and helpful. The online ordering worked fine. You're in the heart of swinging 28th and Burnside, so it might be a convenient place to grab a pizza after a movie at the Laurelhurst, shopping at Music Millennium, or having other fun in the area. But you do have at least three other pizzerias nearby, all good in their own ways: Baby Doll (New York style thin crust, good bar attached and lots of outdoor tables), Ken's Artisan (more upscale than Grana, similar pizza) and Bull Run (thicker crust, popular for slice orders and outdoor dining). read more

My husband and I really enjoyed our meal at Grana! We needed a quick but nice place in the area, and we were able to make a reservation for 6pm on a Friday the day before, which is often rare for good places! We knew we weren't going to take leftovers, so we ordered conservatively to share; an app, a salad, one pizza and one dessert. My husband had a glass of the house red and it was great. We ordered and found the pace of the courses perfect. We got the burratta appetizer. It came atop balsamic and was topped with poppyseeds, and was served with some toasted baguette. Nothing mind blowing, but enjoyable. Lots of cheese for the bread serving, so my husband ate the leftovers with his pizza crust. We got the citrus and fennel salad. It was fantastic - we enjoyed it immensely. If you like the description, you'll like the salad. The citrus and fennel were great offsets to the richness of the cheese and nuts. For our pizza, we chose the Nonna. Toppings aside, the crust was perfect. Thin in the center, with a thicker, pillowy crust. As for the toppings, they were unique and delicious. Never had a pizza like it - and we really like pizza. While this was a more sophisticated flavored pizza, we agreed our kids would love one of the more basic options. Finally, dessert. My husband loves tiramisu, so we had to give it a try. I really enjoyed the pistachios on top. As far as the actual tiramisu layers went, it was good. I didn't seem as enamored by my husband, and to make a point, I showed him some of my ladyfinger that was pretty dry still. He was suprised and turned the dish around to show me his side, with ladyfingers that were thoroughly moistened (as I would expect). It is a hard thing to open a gourmet pizza joint in Portland where there are so many prime spots already. And to open one literally in the shadow of Ken's Artisan Pizza is another level of panache entirely. I do have a lot of "respect for the craft" that's on display as soon as you walk in through the doors. The crust tastes fresh, is fluffy, and has just the right amount of char you want from the wood fired oven. Each pizza has a very distinct set of ingredients, all of which are fresh and perfectly proportioned on top. I suppose my lack of enthusiasm for Grana comes from the fact that what it has to offer isn't all that different from many other pizza places in the city and the pizza lacks a certain zing in flavor. What's the point of assembling the parts in a technically perfect manner when the sum of these parts lacks a vibrant soul? While eating here I was reminiscing about the hot chili oil I used to douse on my saucy Margherita at Life of Pie pizzeria, or the steaming, fluffy cloud of eye brow raising goodness that's in every bite of Ken's. Ok wow, the portafoglios? More like portaforget about going anywhere else for lunch! I've now tried all three of their portafoglios, or "hand pizzas". These are essentially personal Neapolitan pizzas, wood fired in the oven and folded into a little triangle shape which is perfect for snacking on the go. The folded shape consolidates the cheese/sauce/toppings into bites that are more satisfying than a normal pizza; maybe New Yorkers are on to something with their folded slices? Even better, due to how it's folded, what would normally be the crust of the pizza is now the top, which here is topped with a creamy pesto sauce and shredded cheese. This is so great for me because as a crust-hater this makes the crust infinitely more enjoyable. Now that I've tried all three types (the "standard" Margherita, the meaty/spicy Diavola, and the "white pizza" Bianca) I was expecting to come here and provide the definitive rankings... alas they were all so good I can't pick a favorite! I really needed Grana to be worse. I needed it to be so far off base that I could easily skip it for a Jersey/NYC slice at Baby Doll, a Sicilian at Bull Run, or a rainy day senior special during non-tourist season at Ken's (I'm not going to Dove Vivi because I enjoy pizza). But no: The place had to come through on several levels. But let's start with a topic that the two-star voters aren't necessarily wrong about: The crust. It's airier and spongier than it should be, but by no means undercooked. It's a damned shame because it's holding this lovely array of cured meats, hot honey, white pie, and other combinations that Grana excels at. Also, as others have mentioned, it rewards those who travel light. If you're a party of two or fewer and can clear out of there in less than an hour, you can enjoy your burrata, your pizza from dough to plate and your glass of Piedmont Barbera at the bar with no issue. If you're from the neighborhood and just want to eat solo, they'll pull you over a stool. It's a lovely little dining room that's also the only place in the city that knows what panuozzo is. Granted, it's going to hit you with a $13 premium for it, but that's what you get when a lunch item that's a fixture elsewhere is so rare here that it's basically a delicacy. I'm not going to lie: I'm not going to schlep up to Otto if I'm at the Laurelhurst because the crust is slightly more sturdy. I'm not going to go to Pyro if I'm not getting a lamp at Lounge Lizard because who has the time to wade through that mess? Grana's somewhat spongy crust is offset by all of the effort it's putting into the other elements of its pizza and the overall efficacy of the shop. I love that I've complained so much about Italian-American food in this town that the stretch from Baby Doll to Providore is basically Little Italy now, and Grana has earned a place in the rotation that 'medigan Pizzicato never occupied. read more

Grana was a secret love for us until it got ranked as one of the top 50 pizza spots in the country. There are so many amazing restaurants on this block, and Grana fits right in. The pizza is fantastic, but the Caesar salad is out of this world. Unlike most Caesar's, Grana's is light and refreshing. The flavor profile is there but the dough was soggy in the middle that it flopped down when picked up and then all of your toppings fell off the pizza. There should be some structure to the dough. I've probably been back a minimum of five times now, and having been to Italy and eaten pizza there - Grana is probably one of the best that I've tried in Portland. You can't go wrong with any of their flavors, but when I'm missing Naples, the Diavola and Margherita are the go-to's. Highly recommend trying their specials and the Bianca as well - again, can't go wrong with any, they're all so tasty. A new shop at the PSU Farmers Market! Their concept and menu are very enticing. They fold a 10" pie so that you can easily eat it while purusing the park. All their pies are made fresh to order too. We tried the Rick & Morta which was a ricotta, mortadella, and pistachio combo. Sounds delectable but, unfortunately, not as great as it sounds. The flavor just wasn't their. Not sure if the toppings they used weren't the best but nothing worked together. The dough was bland and bready. Mortadella just tasted plain and there was no pistachio to be found. I also didn't like the balsamic glazed they added, would have been better without it I think. They have other pies that sound delicious as well, in case someone would like to try them out. Went for lunch on a heat wave weekday. I read about their folded lunch pizza when they launched and had to have one, but it's taken me this long to come. It's a elegant little space, and it was nice and cool inside. The qr code ordering was simple enough, and food came quickly. I loved the chicory ceasar! caesar salads are often too creamy and pungent, and this had very fresh endive and chicory and just enough dressing to make it delicious. The pizza came, and damn, the pie itself was incredible. Chewy sour dough, a little crispy and also a little runny in the center. The folded sandwich was a bit to much for one - I ate about 2/3rds. I got the mortadella, which had a slight pistachio spread. Like the salad, the ingredients were pretty much left to tell the story; sauce and spice and salt were left to a minimum. I completely respect that, and it was so tasty, but just a bit more oomph would push it over. I think I'll sneak in my own Maldon next time. read more
