What another great addition to NE 28th and Burnside! Grana started as a pop up and now has a brick and mortar! Featuring Neopolitan pizzas, Grana uses fresh, local ingredients, and truly lets their food speak for itself. The restaurant is small, with a few tables, definitely good for smaller groups. Menu is through a QR code and you also order online. We got the Diavola and Funghi pizzas and service was fast and efficient. The pizzas were great! The ingredients tasted fresh and the dough was chewy and pillowy. The Daviola had salami, calabrian chili, and honey drizzle. Sweet and spicy, it was great! The Funghi featured seasonal mushrooms, pine nuts, chevre, and topped with arugula. All the ingredients just worked. Balanced and harmonized. A new pizza place that just opened up next to Whole Foods off E. Burnside. The indoor is nice and cozy, and you order from the counter. We came here for lunch and were able to get our food pretty quickly. The lunch options are pretty simple, with three different pizza options to choose from. What's unique about this place is that the 10" pizza is to cooked and then folded up and served in a container for you to enjoy. There is this sauce and extra cheese that is sprinkled on top of the pizza that gives it the extra flavor. This is only served during lunch as a quick and mobile option for diners. The pizza over is barely large enough for the restaurant, and they were taking take out orders causing massive delays. If you like the thin Neopolitan style pizzas, then Grana is legit for that. They even got a few honors in international pizza competitions for their pizzas, and I'm sure they'll get more attention since they're still less than 1-year-old. We made reservations for dinner, and it is a nice contemporary space. While we were eating, there were a lot of people up front and I think they were waiting for takeout orders, so seems popular for that. They operate on a QR menu mode, which I personally like because you can do everything on your phone, including paying and tipping. The menu has some nice starters like salads (we had the chicory caesar) and appetizers (we got the white bean and a second dish of asparagus). Serving size was pretty big and decent to share. The pizzas are a nice medium size, not super big like some places but not small like an individual. Because they're thin, we felt we could order more than one, and got one red and one white. Oddly, the menu had more white pizza options (pizza without tomato sauce). For the red we got the Diavolo and for the white we got the Pancetta, which had nice salty strips of crispy pancetta on top. The pizzas come out with scissors for you to cut your individual pieces. Overall, they were fresh and quality stuff. I enjoyed the red pizza more, although I'll note the tomato sauce is slightly sweet (which I enjoyed but some others may not). Definitely a nice addition to Portland's diverse pizza scene. read more

My husband and I went to Grana for an impromptu date night and overall had a good experience. We started with the chicory Caesar and the dressing was extremely tasty and very light (in a good way) compared to most Caesars. The pizza was delicious, we got the blanco and the margherita. We both liked the blanco best but agreed the margherita was necessary too to add a fresh balance. The crust was absolutely delicious and the ingredients were very high quality and fresh. We also loved cutting the pizza with the shears, so fun! I'd recommend they look at expanding their wines by the glass menu a little bit, given the prices and high quality of the other food it would have been nice to have an option other than "house red" or "house white." My only real bit of constructive criticism is about the service. There were two servers, the guy was super nice but the girl wasn't overly friendly and hovered at our table after we got a box, waiting for us to leave so she could bus it. We were also seated at table 12 which is literally behind the host stand, I would highly recommend not seating people at that table unless you have a packed house because not only was it cramped, it was really awkward having to be eye level with the host's butt during the meal. There were a ton of empty tables throughout the restaurant so I regret not asking to be seated elsewhere, but I didn't want to seem high maintenance. read more

These pizzas are slightly larger but star the same delicious 3-day fermented dough cooked to 90 seconds in the oven with simple, good ingredients for a complete tasty personal pizza per person - no crust left behind because the dough is so good. Grana feels like a neighborhood pizza place in Italy: cozy and informal. And it's a welcome addition to the East Burnside and 28th restaurant extravaganza (at least 5 of which involve pizza). It has a limited menu of carefully curated wood-fired pies, two delicious Mediterranean-inspired salads, and a small but respectable selection of Italian-ish wines. Service is friendly and committed to a simple, unpretentions restaurant model. They seem to have successfully implemented an efficient system of online menu and smart phone ordering/paying; although I tend to favor the more traditional model of paying and tipping (even online) after the meal has been served. The highlight Grana's exceptional, person-sized wood-fired pizzas is the crust. The red sauce is mild but tasty and the non-tomato based sauce on the fungi pizza was impressive without being overpowering. I might like to see a monthly special--maybe one with prosciutto or fennel sausage with arugula as an add-on. But I can understand the advantages of a limited menu. The house wine is more than serviceable, but this being Portland I usually like to see at least a couple of local beer taps, maybe Pilsner and an IPA. read more
