    There's something about this stretch of Hawthorne that doesn't try too hard and that's exactly why it works. Between the literary maze of Powell's Books, the hum of Baghdad Theater and Pub, and the scatter of oddball shops and late-afternoon wanderers, you get this feeling like time slows down just enough to let you breathe it in. It's a neighborhood with a pulse slightly offbeat, unapologetically itself. So I came back to Pizza A Shoals with a mission. Not just for pizza but for truth. I'd heard the stories. The long waits. The "hour and a half for a pie" folklore that either scares you off or pulls you in deeper, depending on what kind of person you are. Here's the thing they told me 30 minutes. I got it in 23. That's not just good it's tight. Efficient. Respectful of your time without sacrificing whatever magic they're working behind that counter. And in those 23 minutes? That's a full Hawthorne experience. A quick coffee, a slow stroll, maybe a detour into a shop you didn't plan on entering. Spring in the air, people out living instead of rushing. It's the kind of wait that doesn't feel like waiting at all. Step inside and it hits you this place has character. Not manufactured charm, but the real kind. Cozy booths, warm lighting, a room that feels lived-in. Like it's been quietly doing its thing long before anyone started talking about it online. And then there's the pizza. This is the main event. No gimmicks. No over-explanation. Just a pie that shows up and reminds you why you came in the first place. Balanced, deliberate, unapologetically good. The kind of pizza that doesn't need hype it earns it. So yeah, consider this a return visit with a verdict: whatever you heard about the wait? Maybe true once. Maybe exaggerated. But right now, they're dialed in. And if you play it right, that short wait turns into part of the experience not a flaw, but a feature. And in a neighborhood like this, that's exactly how it should be.

    Apizza Scholls was one of our first stops when we moved to Portland years ago. More recently, we ordered a takeout pizza. They do one size: 18". Prices range from $20-33. I recommend asking for double-cut slices. We got half New York White Pie and half Margherita, as trying to avoid pork limits the options. They don't allow substitutions but you can do a full build-your-own. You can call in to place an order as early as one hour before open. If you get the voicemail, hang up and call back. I had to try a few times. We set a fifteen minute pickup window (5:45-6). They were super busy and we didn't leave with the pizza until about 30 minutes after that (~6:30). They do a long-fermented crust and call it a New Haven style. The crust is kinda chewy. It's good pizza! Worth visiting at least once, but most times I'll opt for a less-busy spot when I'm looking for a regular go-to.

    We were visiting Portland and wanted to try this pizza shop. We saw on their website that they closed at 9pm by sat the last diners at 8:45pm. So, we rushed over to make it in by 8:30pm. But when we get there the employee says it's take out only. We told him that we rushed over because we saw the last seating at 8:45p. He just casually said "oh yeah well it's slow we're calling it early." Definetly unprofessional, a company should stick to the hours posted especially for someone so popular. What's an extra 15mins gonna do? He did offer to seat us but it just felt weird and forced. Anyways, we ordered a pie to go. Thankfully the pie was delicious so compliments to the chef. Maybe just a bad one off experience.

    This last visit solidified my belief in Apizza Scholls as one of the top 3 pizzerias in PDX. On a crowded Friday night, we went to go pick up our pie (they give you a 30-minute window and somehow it works), and despite having to navigate around all the bodies waiting for a table, the process was surprisingly smooth and efficient. Our Margherita pie was served with a smile --- and once we got it home and dug in, it lived up to the hype. A subtle crisp on the bottom of the slice, with bigger pillows of crispy char on the crust, and the sauce was just right --- not too sweet and not too tangy. A nice garlic pop, too. Very nice. It's a warm, pleasant, rustic-y atmosphere with cool wooden booths on one side and low tables on the other, but it can get noisy on weekends. Good taps and super cool folks doing hard work here.

    Alright , alright ,Alright ! I have finally tried Apizza Scholls just to find out what's the hype about and I kinda get it and Kinda dont. What I liked - The service is fantastic - fast, sweet and very accommodating .Pizza is great ,light crust and amazing toppings and despite opting for a rich flavor I didn't find them greasy or oily . The option to customize is awesome ,it lets you taste more of the menu and is easy to share. What can be better - Not to be picky but the lighting is a turn-off pun intended . Its slightly dark in there and brings the vibe down . Also , there could be a few more beverages added to the menu - after all ,this is a much sought after spot in the city and could do with a little more than 5 reds on the menu. Pricing is good and its easy to find street parking . On my list for must return spots .

    My brother and I came on a Tuesday evening, and we were seated immediately at the bar. Otherwise, it would have been a 20 minute wait at a table. This place seems like it can be busy! We ordered 1/2 Paulie Gee and 1/2 Sausage, Pepperoni, & Mushroom. Highly recommend the Paulie Gee! The basil is such an icing on top of the hot honey. It's not spicy and was incredibly delicious. The sausage, pepperoni, & mushroom is a safe option. The pizza crust is crispy and chewy. Service is attentive and quick! Highly recommend!

    This place has become one of my favorite pizza joints in the city. Cheese is perfect, toppings delicious, and crust brings it home for the win. Staff is always welcoming, vibes are good, and food is incredible. Don't miss out.

    It was busy on a Sunday night and had to wait a few minutes to be seated. There are two different seating areas and both aren't the biggest but a fair amount of space. Pizza came out hot!! Ended up burning roof of my mouth and didn't notice til after. It wasn't the worst but definitely gotta be careful. Have to say they are pretty big pizzas! Makes sense for the price though. Got half/half with Amatriciana and Bacon Bianca. Both were pretty good. Amatriciana has sauce and Bacon Bianca has no sauce but didn't notice much difference in the two.

    One of the best pizza places in like, the US. Seriously good pies. Thin crust and well worth the money or like that you might encounter. Luckily, we didn't wait in a line (Sunday around 7pm). It was an interesting set- up: you go through one door, they tell you if they have a table, and then they send you through the other door that says "check in next door". It's a bit backwards, but it works. Go to their website and check out the directions (listed below from my Teri leg memory): - phone orders start at 4pm and go till... they run out? - restaurant opens at 5pm and closes at... 9pm? Or whenever they sell out? I think? Vegetarian review: - you can split a pizza 1/2 one and 1/2 the other. They just charge for the higher cost one. - margherita pizza: so good. One of the best I've had. There's nothing different about the ingredients, but their think crust is perfectly crisp and chewy, the sauce is not too acidic or too sweet, and the cheese and basil are great. - NY red: also good, but the margherita was better. This is a version of the New York pie (usually does not have sauce). Service was good. Food came out pretty quickly. Parking: usually a block or two away.

    My wife and I stopped by Apizza Scholls on our road-trip through the Pacific Northwest because we our friends had highly recommend Apizza Scholls as their favorite pizza place -- EVER. After trying out their pizza last night, I'll have to agree -- the pizza here is easily some of the best I've ever had. We placed our order at 4:30 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. pick-up. Even though they open at 5:00 p.m., phone line opens at 4:00 p.m. so you can call ahead to schedule a pick-up order. I'm so glad we ended up doing this because when we showed up during our pick-up window, there was a line out the door spilling down the sidewalk, and we overheard the host say the wait times were upwards of 45 minutes. Moving on to the pizza themselves, I love that there's an option to create your own half-and-half pie. We got a whole pie split into the New York White Pie and the Pig & Pineapple. Regardless of what flavor you pick, the crust here is the real star. The crust is thin, crunchy, foldable, and has just the right amount of chewiness to it. The outer edges remind me of sourdough bread in its texture. Even if you're a person that doesn't typically eat the crust on their pizza, you'll definitely want to give the crust here a chance because it will blow you away. For $40+ a pizza, it's not exactly a cheap eat, but I can confidently assure you you're paying for quality. If you ever have the opportunity to stop by this area of town, I cannot recommend Apizza Scholls enough.

    Definitely a place you have to line up for before they open or else you won't be getting a dine in spot. We were towards the end of the line but got the last counter seats. For me, Apizza Scholls is better than Ken's Artisan Pizza. The crust was chewy, flavor and had a great char. The two pizzas we got were incredible and I will definitely be coming back. However, I do have to say I witnessed an unfortunate event where a staff member named Lisa was extremely rude and impatient with a couple who did not speak English. I understand that it was opening time and this place is very busy, but the couple was trying to use Google Translate and the staff member was just angrily yelling at them in English which they clearly did not speak. The couple was just confused and was not yelling back at all - in fact they were mostly quiet while Lisa was yelling. And then when other English speaking customers came by she turned into a happy jolly person. This incident occurred a few months ago but I still remember the events like it was yesterday. The other staff members were nice and attentive.

    Come early to get a table, otherwise there will be a wait. It's a casual pizza spot with 2 sides of tables. We had the ceasar salad, calzone, and tried 2 pizzas with types on each. One pizza was split red pies, the Paulie Gee and Marina. The Other pie was splite white, with Diablo Blanco and some kind of mushroom topping. My favorite was definitely the Pauliee gee's with the hot Honey. The white pies were a little bland, and the texture on the Diablo blanco was bit odd and gritty. The pie's itself were well made with a nice crunchy crust. Service was great.

The pizzas looked right, square, caramelized crispy edges, heavy toppings... and then on the side of the plate was this cup of ranch dressing. Duh! "Ranch" obviously has to have a good ranch, right? I dipped my pinky finger in the ranch and took a taste. You would not think one ranch can be so far ahead of the others, but ranch is the place for ranch, as well as pizza. My first bite brought a smile to my face, it was just, right in every way that a Detroit pie should be. I have been back to try their #4 pie with sausage and ricotta, and I am looking forward to more trips. If all that was not enough, the service was friendly, the food came out so quick (about 10 minutes) and the place was nice and clean.

If your goal is to enjoy great pizza, I'd recommend one of the many other pizza spots in the area instead.

The cheese and toppings tasted fresh, and I especially appreciated that they offer half slices, which made it easy for my husband and me to try a few different varieties without committing to full slices. That said, I think my expectations may have been a little too high going in. The pizza was definitely good, but I wasn't quite blown away the way I expected to be based on all the hype. For me, the cheese were the weakest part--wasn't bad by any means, but it didn't stand out compared to some of the other pizza spots we've visited around the country. Sauce was just okay, I like mine a little more flavorful. The vibe was fun and memorable. They were blasting metal music when we walked in, which definitely gives the place some personality. The employee helping us was incredibly friendly, offered recommendations, and even suggested other places for us to check out while we were in town. If memory serves me correctly, they also seemed to have a lot of vegan and vegetarian options, which is always nice to see. At the end of the day, Sizzle Pie is exactly what I think a neighborhood pizza shop should be: good pizza, no fuss, and plenty of options. While it wasn't my favorite pizza in Portland, I'd still happily stop in again for a slice.
