What we ordered: The Caesar salad (this was huge and different from what I am used to, and I actually loved it whole leaves of romaine, lettuce, nice shaved pieces of parmigiano I believe) Build your own pizza: Pepperoni Jalapeños Basil Garlic My girl chose these toppings not something I would've wanted, but it worked out anyway the dough on this pizza was absolutely phenomenal. Whenever we travel, one of our missions is finding the best pizza in the city. As two people who are borderline obsessed with pizza, Apizza Scholls was at the top of our Portland list--and it absolutely lived up to the hype. We arrived before opening and lined up outside, which ended up being a great decision. The place filled up quickly right as we were finishing our meal. That's usually a good sign. I ordered the Margherita (Margo'rita) pizza, and it was honestly one of the best pizzas I've ever had. My husband agreed, which says a lot because we've eaten pizza all over the country and have pretty high standards. The crust was everything you want it to be: crunchy on the outside with just the right amount of char, but still chewy in the center. The tomato sauce tasted flavorful, and the combination of fresh mozzarella, aged mozzarella, pecorino romano, garlic, olive oil, and basil was incredible. The aged mozzarella and generous garlic gave it the perfect balance of salty, savory flavor without overwhelming the sauce. We added a side of hot honey, which paired beautifully with the pizza. I also appreciated that our server let me sample a few hard ciders before choosing one. It's a small thing, but it made the experience even better. If I had to describe the pizza, I'd say it felt like a delicious middle ground between New York and New Haven styles. Apizza Scholls, one of my favorite pizza places back in the 2010s when I traveled to Portland regularly for work. I haven't been back in over 7 years at this point, and have eaten a ton more pizza. Could it still be my favorite pizza in Portland? We walked in a little after 6PM for a Sunday dinner and the place had a huge line of people waiting for seats. We were told for earliest bar seating for two, it would take at least 30 minutes. Luckily, it didn't take nearly as long and we were seated only 15 minutes later and the pizza was at our table 20 minutes after that. Americiana ($29) - Now this is a pizza. It's an 18 inch extra large monstrosity with a seriously impressive crust. That bubbling texture, that crispy edge, that flavor in the long 24 hour cold ferment dough. Seriously, just look at that char and puff in my photos. It's genuinely impressive stuff. And then lifting the first slice up - what!? The toppings all stay completely glued on and somehow the crust remains almost like a wooden plank, holding the piece up to a remarkably non-floppy degree. It's that perfect crisp throughout. The cornicione, especially, has that requisite char, is chewy on the inside, yet light and airy. The crust stays crisp throughout the meal - my third slice was every bit as crisp as my first. Man, that's a really great crust. The toppings are there to enhance, but not overwhelm the crust. Everything is remarkably even in distribution, with most items being thinly shaved. The bacon, for example is almost paper thin. Instead of being crumbled or cut into smaller pieces, they are entire strips, laid on top radiating out in a starburst pattern. The bacon is smoky and very peppery, with a flavor almost reminiscent of barbecue sauce with a slight sweetness. It's surprisingly not crisp at all, instead being very tender. The red onion, entire circles, are thin as well, enough to cook through, removing the pungency, but retaining some texture. They don't add too much tomato sauce at all - in fact, I'm not sure I would even characterize it as sauce! It's instead more like crushed tomatoes, thick, fresh and very bright. It has a perfectly balanced sweetness and acidity. There's minced garlic, spread on the pie in various clusters, giving every couple of bites a garlicky punch. Finally the cheese. Again, it's not included in a large amount at all. In fact, I'd venture a guess that many a pizza fanatic would consider the pizza to be under cheesed! But for what Apizza Scholls is aiming for - a crusty pie with perfectly balanced toppings - the amount is more than appropriate. And to keep that crusty crisp, the cheese is actually the base layer of the pie, allowing the fatty qualities to act as a hydrophobic barrier against any moisture intrusion from above. What great construction! (5/5) This pizza is not for people who want gobs and gobs of toppings; in fact, it will feel skimpy - there's perhaps 1/2 the amount of cheese typically found in a NY slice. It might require more slices than usual to reach a similar level of fullness. That's just how it is. Apizza Scholls has crafted the perfect topping balance to leave an amazing crust. It's an absolute piece of art that I enjoyed immensely. I thought I had run into my pizza of the year back in January in Nashville, but this pizza I ate at Apizza Scholls is making me doubt my selection. Would I visit again? Absolutely. Would I recommend it to everyone left and right for a Portland recipe pizza*? No doubt. They serve some really top tier pizza here. PS: Get here early! Apizza Scholls was one of our first stops when we moved to Portland years ago. More recently, we ordered a takeout pizza. They do one size: 18". Prices range from $20-33. I recommend asking for double-cut slices. We got half New York White Pie and half Margherita, as trying to avoid pork limits the options. They don't allow substitutions but you can do a full build-your-own. You can call in to place an order as early as one hour before open. If you get the voicemail, hang up and call back. I had to try a few times. We set a fifteen minute pickup window (5:45-6). They were super busy and we didn't leave with the pizza until about 30 minutes after that (~6:30). They do a long-fermented crust and call it a New Haven style. The crust is kinda chewy. It's good pizza! He just casually said "oh yeah well it's slow we're calling it early." Definetly unprofessional, a company should stick to the hours posted especially for someone so popular. This last visit solidified my belief in Apizza Scholls as one of the top 3 pizzerias in PDX. On a crowded Friday night, we went to go pick up our pie (they give you a 30-minute window and somehow it works), and despite having to navigate around all the bodies waiting for a table, the process was surprisingly smooth and efficient. Our Margherita pie was served with a smile --- and once we got it home and dug in, it lived up to the hype. A subtle crisp on the bottom of the slice, with bigger pillows of crispy char on the crust, and the sauce was just right --- not too sweet and not too tangy. A nice garlic pop, too. Very nice. It's a warm, pleasant, rustic-y atmosphere with cool wooden booths on one side and low tables on the other, but it can get noisy on weekends. What I liked - The service is fantastic - fast, sweet and very accommodating .Pizza is great ,light crust and amazing toppings and despite opting for a rich flavor I didn't find them greasy or oily . The option to customize is awesome ,it lets you taste more of the menu and is easy to share. What can be better - Not to be picky but the lighting is a turn-off pun intended . Its slightly dark in there and brings the vibe down . Also , there could be a few more beverages added to the menu - after all ,this is a much sought after spot in the city and could do with a little more than 5 reds on the menu. My wife & I stumbled upon this place while looking for pizza in the area. The reviews looked good, so we came by around 5:30 on a Friday evening. The place was already packed, so we waited about 20 minutes to get seats at the bar. We had looked at the menu while waiting, so ordered right away. Our server brought our drinks (hard cider for me, pear cider for my wife), and soon after a Caesar salad with anchovies to share and a side of olives for her. The salad was huge, definitely enough for one person as a meal. After we finished the salad, our pepperoni, sausage and mushroom pizza arrived. The crust had a perfect char on it, with just enough heft to eat with our hands without the front part sagging. The pizza was cut into 8 slices, but we were only able to eat 4 of them, full from the salad. We took the rest back to our AirBnb. After a quick trip in the toaster oven, it made for a good lunch the next day. The craziest thing is that we were just visiting from San Francisco to visit family living in Portland. But the bar had many elements from home, from the San Francisco Giants posters on the wall (our favorite sports team), an Anchor Steam bottle, even It's-It's available for dessert (a chocolate-enrobed ice-cream sandwich native to the Bay Area). it was like walking into a pizza joint near our house, but just in Oregon. My wife and I stopped by Apizza Scholls on our road-trip through the Pacific Northwest because we our friends had highly recommend Apizza Scholls as their favorite pizza place -- EVER. After trying out their pizza last night, I'll have to agree -- the pizza here is easily some of the best I've ever had. We placed our order at 4:30 p.m. for a 6:00 p.m. - 6:15 p.m. pick-up. Even though they open at 5:00 p.m., phone line opens at 4:00 p.m. so you can call ahead to schedule a pick-up order. I'm so glad we ended up doing this because when we showed up during our pick-up window, there was a line out the door spilling down the sidewalk, and we overheard the host say the wait times were upwards of 45 minutes. Moving on to the pizza themselves, I love that there's an option to create your own half-and-half pie. We got a whole pie split into the New York White Pie and the Pig & Pineapple. Regardless of what flavor you pick, the crust here is the real star. The crust is thin, crunchy, foldable, and has just the right amount of chewiness to it. The outer edges remind me of sourdough bread in its texture. Even if you're a person that doesn't typically eat the crust on their pizza, you'll definitely want to give the crust here a chance because it will blow you away. For $40+ a pizza, it's not exactly a cheap eat, but I can confidently assure you you're paying for quality. For me, Apizza Scholls is better than Ken's Artisan Pizza. The crust was chewy, flavor and had a great char. The two pizzas we got were incredible and I will definitely be coming back. However, I do have to say I witnessed an unfortunate event where a staff member named Lisa was extremely rude and impatient with a couple who did not speak English. I understand that it was opening time and this place is very busy, but the couple was trying to use Google Translate and the staff member was just angrily yelling at them in English which they clearly did not speak. The couple was just confused and was not yelling back at all - in fact they were mostly quiet while Lisa was yelling. Updated Review 1Yr Later: I'm a firm believer in giving credit where credit is due so here it goes... I have to be honest when we realized we had mistakenly ordered a pizza here (my spouse ordered this time) we were disappointed as the first time we tried their pizza was not great at all. BUT after we got the "Bacon Bianca" pizza and tried it I knew we needed to update the review. The pizza was delicious and we were pleasantly pleased, it was not soggy, and had plenty flavor. The crust could have been done a little less as there were some charred crust but other than that we would recommend trying it. They do charge an 18% gratuity automatically so if you're like us and tip 15-20% keep that in mind so you don't accidentally over tip. I did that the first time and it costed me a 33% tip. The parking is not great, the restaurant itself was clean, and seemed busy. You wouldn't want to catch them on a bus day as you'll be waiting for seating for a while. First Review: We are new to the area and heard the pizza was great, so we decided to give it a try. I have to admit it was the worst pizza I've ever eaten. Sadly, we paid $50 for a cardboard pizza and salad. It was greasy, a bit soggy, and overcooked. I wouldn't recommend the "New York White Pie". Very disappointing....last thing is I wish I would have checked the reviews as you can see the owner is not a kind person. Their replies to their customers complaints are horrible and disrespectful. It tasted just like Dominoes pizza. I ordered their meat pizza and they only allowed 2 meat toppings and its all hype, not substance. Felt very rushed, pass. Now I see why they only stay open for a couple hours to sell hype, not substance. Its basically Dominoes flavor in a way. My friend and I arrived a little early to meet the rest of our group. The host started to seat us at a booth right by the front door, but when I mentioned we were six total, she backtracked, and said they don't seat incomplete parties. She wrote down my name, and pointed to the booth saying "It'll be that one, but I can't seat you until the rest of your party arrives" Within five minutes the rest of our group walked in, right behind another group of three. The host sat those three at the very same booth. Since the booth was right at the entrance, all of us saw it happen. When I pointed out that our full party was now here, the host told us it would be a 30-50 minute wait. What confuses me is they weren't saving that table for a large party. Just a 'complete party'. If I said just two, we would have been sat there. There was a waiting area with an empty table we could drink at, but weren't allowed to eat at. We aren't drinkers. We ended up down the street at another pizza spot, where the system was simple. Order at the counter, grab your own table. It worked great. The pizza was excellent and we'll happily go back there. We were excited to finally try Apizza Scholls, but the handling at the door soured the experience. Maybe I'll give it another shot someday, but I'm in no rush. read more

The service was great; our server was wonderful and he did a great job. The food was 10/10 and absolutely delicious. We had a calzone and salad & it was to die for. Light, crispy, airy-- a perfect way to eat without being bloated or full. Ambiance was cute and cozy. The music was fantastic and we had a lovely time. My only recommendation would be to serve scissors or have the calzone pre cut. We had to cut it with a butter knife and we burnt our hands because the server couldn't take it back Into the kitchen and do it for us after it hit the table. Thin crust, thick crust, made in a regular oven, made in a pizza oven, made in a stone oven, made in Italy... I will love it. The only pizza I will pass on is Little Cesars. That's the bar we are working with. We called in our order for a pepperoni pizza and picked it up. Paying over $30 for a pizza and finding it to be completely and utterly inedible is an affront to my wallet and palette. It was insanely salty! How do you mess up a pizza so bad that it depressed me? Pizza should never make anyone sad. Not only did I not get to enjoy the Friday night pizza that I was looking forward to... I paid a lot for said pizza and tipped quite generously because it's the holidays even though they included a service fee already all for a pizza that was inedible. The Caesar salad definitely hit the spot as one of the highlights of my night. The combinations of flavors and umami was great. Best. Pizza. Ever. I'm not joking when I say we've been thinking about apizza scholls everyday since getting back home from our trip. Literally the best pizza I've ever had. We came by on a Saturday around 8:15 hopinggg they still have enough dough. Luckily we were sat and they literally sold out just 15 minutes after we came. There's 2 doors you can come into. One was for pickup/togo and one for dine-ins. Our waitress was nice and helpful. It's small and intimate inside and you can see into the kitchen where the magic happens. Perfect for date nights. Their base is sourdough and is perfectttt. It's crispy and chewy and thin but still has a bite to it. It's an art honestly. We got the apizza amore for that elevated touch from the margherita. We've been wanting to try Apizza Scholls for some time now. Both Eater and Tasting Table have them on their lists of top 20 pizza establishments in Portland. We went there on a Saturday night around 6pm. Expected wait time from the front desk was one hour. Actual wait time turned out to be about 45 minutes. The pizzas were pretty good, just as other reviewers have described. We ordered one Margherita with house made sausage and one Pig & Pineapple. A few things really stood out on their Neapolitan style pies: 1. The crust was nice and crispy with a small amount of char (5 stars for this!) 2. The homemade sausage was well flavored, with a good mix of fennel and other seasonings. 3. The mozzarella cheese had a deep, rich flavor. It's definitely not the same cheese you buy at the grocery store. We also ordered the Caesar salad for $15 with the optional anchovy filets for $3. But you only get 3 anchovies, making them $1 each, which didn't seem to be a very good value. Otherwise, it was a pretty good salad. Overall, we were happy with our experience at Apizza Scholls. The service was good and the pizza was excellent. But we do plan to try other pizza places in town before going back to this one. read more

I came here thinking I would do an update review, but seems like I've been remiss in posting about it. So I'm making it up now. I've been here a couple of time for dine in and also ordered takeout because it's just a 5-minute walk from my home. It's nice having this in the neighborhood, and it's a solid place for consistent pizza if you want thin crust style. It's soft in the center so you need to do the fold, but I love the texture and flavor. The pizzas are really huge at 18", but I like that they let you do half-and-half. Their selection won't necessarily surprise you with unusual ingredients, all seem pretty classic pizza ingredients. Probably the only usually one is the Paulie Gee's that comes with the Mike's Hot Honey drizzled on at the end. I think that's what takes the pie to next level. What I found out this time around is that you can actually order smaller sized pizzas on the same nights that they serve calzone (which I think is just Monday through Thursday) because they use the dough to make calzone to make the smaller sized pizzas, which is great if you're dining alone. The salads are also solid choices, and everyone gets the classic Caesar. It's fresh with long romaine leaves and a garlicky creamy dressing made with raw egg. It was done perfectly like what you would imagine from an old school Italian trattoria. I've always eaten here early and I found everyone's super friendly and efficient. Pizza is amazing and worth the wait. Classic NY style pizza with amazing flavors. The PB&J was so good I cant wait to get it again. Server was nice and checked in with us frequently but too much. Make sure your whole group is there before asking for a table. read more

If you are looking for a place with real pizza, this is your spot! A place that feels casual, yet a little fancy. You could bring or date or even a family. They actually have a little area in the back with classic arcade games. It has a bar with a few stools, but they only serve beer and wine! The staff is super friendly and quickly responds to all your wants and desires. We had several people stop by to ask if we needed anything or to help grab empty plates/cups. Our table started off with some olives and some wine. It feels like you want some bread, but you know you will soon have pizza. The Caesar salad was phenomenal! Fresh and well dressed, anchovies are recommended. I loved the croutons! We had two pizzas split into halves. One with half Pepperoni and half Margherita, the other with half Tartufo2 The Electric Boogaloo and half Pig & Pineapple. They were all incredible! Well seasoned, amazing crust - not too burnt. All of the toppings were delicious - I think the boogaloo was my favorite. I will definitely be back to try a few more options. No slices - so best to go with several people.
