On Thursday April 9th, 2020, I had my dog seen at Grand Avenue Veterinary Clinic. She was showing symptoms of Anaplasmosis, a tick born blood disease, that I was familiar with due to a prior diagnosis. These symptoms included lameness in her back legs and tail, an unwillingness to eat, restlessness, and crying; and they were identical to the symptoms that she displayed when she was diagnosed with Anaplasmosis last summer. We had not yet begun our tick prevention for the season, and I removed several ticks from her shortly before she began displaying symptoms, which further supported my suspicions. After explaining the situation to Dr. Elaine Nelson, she examined my dog, and she disagreed that the symptoms were consistent with Anaplasmosis. She advised me that she should do a comprehensive blood test ($150+) along with the heartworm 4DX ($55.93) test to rule out other scenarios. I was not opposed to additional testing, but I wanted to rule out my suspicion before being upsold. As I suspected, the test results came back positive for Anaplasmosis. However, despite the positive test, Dr. Nelson proceeded to try to upsell me for the additional lab work, which I refused. The standard course of treatment for Anaplasmosis is one month of Doxycycline, an antibiotic. Dr. Nelson prescribed one week's worth of Doxycycline, and indicated that she would prescribe the remainder if there was a positive response over the next few days. There was a positive response; although as expected after only four days, it was not yet a complete recovery. When I followed up on Monday April 13th as agreed upon, Dr. Nelson was not willing to accept the positive results of the test, nor the effectiveness of the treatment, and she refused to fill the remainder of the prescription without performing over $200 worth of additional diagnostic testing, plus radiology work. Ultimately, my dog's medication is being held for ransom, and I am being extorted. In addition to the extortion fiasco, which is my primary gripe with Grand Avenue Veterinary Clinic, I also experienced the following: · The nine month supply of Heart Guard Chewables that I purchased for $92 was shorted by four months' worth of doses. Perhaps this was an honest mistake, but based on the conduct I experienced, I am skeptical. · The office was filthy. The floors in the exam room and lobby were dirty, and the entrance from the main street was littered in trash, including an exam glove with feces on it. There are several veterinary clinics in the twin ports that will provide excellent, compassionate, and ethical care for your pet at a fair price. Grand Avenue Veterinary Clinic is clearly not one of them. You and your pet have nothing to gain by giving them your business.

We drove three hours after calling ahead and being told to bring our dog in. She had suddenly lost the use of her hind legs and was crying in pain. The veterinary assistants were compassionate, caring, and treated her with dignity. They deserve our sincere thanks. We waited patiently for over two and a half hours, understanding that emergency hospitals must triage patients. Then a veterinary technician--not a veterinarian--told us they would not be able to see our dog. I pleaded for one thing: if they couldn't treat her, could a veterinarian at least provide enough pain medication to ease her suffering until we could find help elsewhere? The answer was simply no. So we picked up our helpless dog and drove another three hours home while she whimpered and cried in pain the entire way. No family should have to watch an animal they love suffer like that after being told to come in for care. Emergency medicine isn't just about saving lives--it's about relieving suffering. In our case, compassion seemed to end at the front desk. We left feeling abandoned, heartbroken, and utterly disgusted.

Do not recommend. Very disappointed with my experience at Northland Spay/neuter. I brought my…read morekitten in to be spayed and microchipped. The day i dropped her off I asked if she would need a cone for after surgery and I was told "no" and that was all. Went to get my kitten the next day and they forgot to microchip her while she was under for surgery. They microchipped her right then and while I was waiting I could hear my kitten SCREAMING while they microchipped her. My regular vet said they only microchip while the cat is out for surgery because it is a large needle and very uncomfortable. As if my kitten wasn't already in pain and scared from surgery but then they did that to her. then they told me the screaming was from trying to get her out of the kennel, she hates her kennel and comes out immediately after the door is open so I found that very hard to believe. Once I got my kitten home I immediately noticed that she was covered in poop and pee. Her kennel was not wet or smelly so they had to have put her in her carrier seeing that she was soaked in her own feces. My kitten also starting licking her incision within a few minutes of being home, so she definitely should have had a cone even though they told me she would not need one when I dropped her off. I had to bring her into my regular vet, within 2 hours of being home, for emergency care where she received an antibiotic shot and a cone!! They also cleaned up her rear a little more because I could not get it all when I was home with her. Northland spay/neuter does offer a free check up for the animals they see but I definitely will not be bringing my kitten back to that place. I would rather pay $60 at my regular vet for her to check up and then I know a good job all be done. Thank you if you've read this far. I know a lot of people are happy with their experience here and maybe I just am an unlucky person but I think that the experience I had was absolutely unacceptable. I hope no one ever has to hear their kitten scream in pain for for something that easily could have been avoided. That could have been pain free if it were not for the carelessness/forgetfulness of the staff.

Then, they revamped their practice to fit in more rooms and got rid of the waiting room, forcing people to wait with their pets in the parking lot. My problems with NSVH have started recently, with honestly really poor customer service and blatant rudeness from staff. When you have a staff member working the phone, as a business it's your job to make sure they are providing adequate service to the standard your clients pay for. I do not want to be cut off or interrupted, I do not want to be hung up on, I do not want to feel stupid or brushed off during my interactions because the woman working the phone wants to rush through my call. I can overlook rude phone service, but I can not overlook it when it comes to in person care as well. I am a young pet owner and I know it may be hard to take me seriously, but I think over the course of 7 appointments I have met maybe 4 vet techs/vets that have actually treated me like a person. I am a human that is worried for their pet, I may have questions and that's okay, but it is not okay for a business to allow rude or belittling behavior. I pay almost twice as much for the "exceptional" service NSVH claims is their practice, which is beginning to feel not worth it. Seriously, this place could be as great as it once was with a little extra attention to customer service! Also, talk to the morning shift phone staff; it's gotten to a point where they just aren't doing their job, and that's honestly poor management.

The associate helped us find everything that we needed and got us signed up with a rewards program. Our cat loves coming in to the store with us. The store is always well stocked and cleaned. When it was time to go to the register, the cashier knew exactly what coupons to look for and where to find them in the book that we were given during the adoption. With the coupons we ended up saving about $25 in the store. We bought the so fresh cat litter from the store and it actually smells a little like cinnamon. I've raised a lot of cats and the cat litter that they sell they actually works better then most of the other brands that I have tried. Today we went back and we got the same great service that we received the day we brought our kitten home. I would defiantly recommend petco if you are looking to adopt a pet, buy a pet, or just need pet supplies. From what I understand, they also have grooming and vet services there too. I will be making all of my pets appointments here for any future services that I need.
