HORRIBLE. Not Good AT ALL - I want to do negative stars. First off, this is cheap greasy Mexican food in a FILTHY hole in the wall with CRAZY HIGH PRICES. I had dinner for 2 with NO drinks and it was $48.00. I commented to the waiter and his response was: ITS NOT MY FAULT THE OWNER RAISED THE PRICES So when I left, the waiter asked why no tip, I responded with "ITS NOT MY FAULT THE OWNER RAISED THE PRICES." I can go to the Southwest Side of Detroit 10 times for the same price and not feel MY LIFE WAS THREATENED BY THE WAITER. I've eaten there over the years and this is very typical there. I took my grandchildren to Grand Azteca in Madison Heights last night for dinner. When we entered we were greeted by a very cheerful host and was seated immediately. Our server was pleasant, attentive and eager to take care of us. I filled up on delicious chips and a white sauce that was incredible, and am eating lunch from my take out box. The portions are huge and seasoned perfectly. The menu has a large variety of choices. The food is authentic and their prices are reasonable. Although I have not eaten in every Mexican restaurant in Michigan, I have finally found the best Mexican restaurant I have visited. I can't wait to go back. read more

Azteca recently evolved their menu, much to my appreciation. The shredded beef recipe has been enhanced with a bit more flavor including cinnamon and coriander. They've added several items, including 'Mochojete' to the menu, which is their spin on a traditional serving of various meats (and I understood the tradition to include recipes with marinaded vegetables, cactus and beans, but beans are served separately here) served in a blazing hot crucible, topped with cheese. I have been to various Aztecas in the area, but since I don't live nearby, I have only visited this location twice. Obviously, I liked the first visit enough to return of my own free will ... and the second visit was a good as the first. Great food, excellent service and a friendly atmosphere. The restaurant is situated on the south side of 14 Mile Road, between I-75 and John R. They have parking both in front and at the rear of the building. Upon entering, as your eyes scan the situation, there are some booths to your left, a small bar area (with alcohol available) straight ahead, and to your right is the larger dining area. Honestly, I have only been seated in the booths to the left, so I can't comment on the rest. If you speak fluent Spanish, you should fare well here with your communications. If you speak English, again, no problem at all. If you speak gringo Spanish (like me), ordering agua, cervesa, burrito, tamales, a case of deeya and the like, should be 'no problemo'. They will sort it all out. The menu is the same as the restaurant near me, so that makes it easy to order favorites. Oftentimes, I am awestruck by the daily specials written on a whiteboard, which makes it difficult for me to concentrate on the regular menu. My adventurous right eye always wants to order decadent things from the menu at full price, but my thrifty left eye battles it out and usually wins. Luckily, when a restaurant has a special (or sale for all you womenfolk out there), they usually have a good product for a discounted price. Such is the situation at Azteca. On my recent visit, I ordered a combination plate. I never remember exactly what I eat, unless I happen to take a picture for future reference. So, suffice it to say, that which I ordered was devoured in a timely manner, dispatched to the Director of Gastrointestinal Services for further processing If you happen to be in the area, maybe shopping at a nearby computer store perhaps, stop on in if you like well-prepared Mexican food. Honestly I should've paid more attention to the recent reviews. I got the asada fries with chorizo and the chorizo was good but everything else was flavorless. No type of seasoning in the fries and the cheese was bland. I also got the fajita quesadilla and that was also flavorless and very soggy. The guacamole tasted old and had no flavor to it either. Both meals came with chips and some ranch type dip- the chips were so stale I couldn't even chew them. First, the good: Service is blazing fast, professional, and courteous. The beer is priced inexpensively. You get a mountain of chips with two different salsa bowls. The portions are large. Now, the bad: Like many ethnic food restaurants in the Detroit Metro Area I've been to, the operative premise here seems to be to increase the amount of food by 50%, and decrease the taste by 50%. It seems as if the strategy is to not challenge American taste buds in any kind of way, and to also add to the girth of our already-large population. Maybe this is what people want here; maybe I'm the one out of step with local preferences. I've lived all over the U.S., in a lot of cities with large ethnic populations, and in most other major cities, you get Thai food or Mexican food or French food, etc., that really pops. It's got a lot of taste, and a lot of character. I ordered a shrimp burrito, and that showed up at the table swollen with, and just oozing, cheese. In fact, I'd say 80% of the filling was cheese. There was so much cheese, you really couldn't taste anything else. It was like a burrito (or a taco) you might make at home for your finicky 6 year-old. Very bland. The black beans, which also came with melted cheese on top, were also quite bland. Ditto for the lettuce and sour cream. Dullsville. The service was great, and I got a mug of beer that looked more like a pitcher than a mug (it was huge), but, ultimately, you go to a restaurant to dine, and if the food you're eating is achingly non-descript in every way, and it seems like the chef is just phoning it in, well, then, that needs to be reflected in the rating. read more

I have to say that my curiosity got the better of me when I decided to go here and have dinner tonight. It was a total mistake. How does one person get totally left out during service when a table of 3 gets great service? I have never been to a restaurant where someone came and tried to take an order before I was even given a menu after I sat there for almost 10 minutes after being seated by the hostess who did not even give me a menu. This restaurant needs some coaching and training very badly. I can't understand how a waiter can totally forget about someone other than to drop off their food and walk away. How do you do that if your job is to wait on customers? I absolutely had to ask anyone I could get to pay attention to me for a napkin, a spoon, and finally even the bill. What is going on in this place ? I don't know because I surely can't get to the bottom of the service issue and I have been in this restaurant for 30 minutes.. service was so bad my food was cold because I could not even get a napkin after food spilled on the table to wipe it up. Can you imagine trying to eat ice cold beef and cheese enchiladas. Not. I had them bring me a box so that I could take my food home and actually warm it so I can find out what it taste like. I will never come here again and I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone mostly because they don't have any service. How can you have 10 different service people on the floor and not one of them able to take care of a single table with one single woman at it who you seated? On the way out of the restaurant I had to find the manager to tell him to please go and pick up the bill off the table that I actually wrote a response to the service on to make sure that they knew what was actually felt by this customer. Even the bus boy came to the table to bring me a spoon because he saw the waiter totally walking by me every 5 minutes as though I was not even there when I am waving and trying to get his attention saying sir sir sir. How many times does this happen in this restaurant? I think they need to reevaluate their training and service. Mexican restaurants are normally fairly quick to get your food because it is usually quickly cooked when it is mostly prepared in cases such as the fillings for burritos tacos and enchiladas. That's what I had so it should not have taken 30 minutes for a plate of three enchiladas to come 15 ft to my seat. I sat there and watched people who came in after me tables of three actually order get service and even have all their food before they even came over and brought my food and I was just one person having enchiladas. This tells me that as a single person they have no desire to serve you. I don't think this is what restaurants should do when they see a single person because it means that person is not regarded as a customer. If you don't want my money then tell me at the door before I sit here and get disgusted and pay you for food that I cannot even eat. This whole situation thoroughly incensed me enough that I sat down after I got home to tell everyone exactly what happened. There is no reason for this to ever happen at a restaurant to one person. A single Diner should always get good service. Whatever is going on here someone with authority needs to find out because this restaurant is not giving service to single people or maybe I should say single women. I was so disgusted I actually left a $1 tip on a $18 Bill. And no I didn't even eat the food that's just how disgusting this whole incident was. This place is great! They have a huge menu and a great variety of everything! Prices are reasonable and I have never been disappointed. The chicken enchiladas have some sort of cheesy-gravy on them that is fantastic! They also have a lot of items that are unique that I have not seen at other Mexican restaurants in the area. Their chips and salsa are really good and they also have a 'ranch-like' dip that they provide as well. I'm a little bummed that the Dequindre location closed but this one is nearby and very similar to the Long Lake location. It was a little smaller and the service not quite as cheery but the food was just as good...no Mariachi though : ( Our server seemed like he was standing on his head with all the tables he had so I have to cut him some slack but our food came out quickly and it was hot and hit the spot. I ventured away from my staple combo plates opting for something a little better for me and ended up trying their Tacos Pastor. Six soft corn tortillas wrapped in foil and filled with meat with pico de gallo and a tomatillo sauce on the side....they were ridiculously good but I wish they hadn't filled the tacos since the tortillas were all laid in a line together. It was kind of like a super long soft shell taco with a double layer of tortillas. We'll be back for sure but we'll try Long Lake again when it's time for Mariachi Fridays. read more

When I came back to visit after being away from Metro Detroit for two years, Grand Azteca was in my top five restaurants I simply HAD to eat at before I went home. Grand Azteca is all about the best fatty, greasy, "Bad for you" parts of Mexican food. If you want something light, you are not in the best spot. Chori-pollo is my favorite item on the menu. The chimichangas are pretty fly too. Their drinks are large and inexpensive. One huge-ass margarita will get me tipsy every time. Their chips are fresh, thin and delicious! The white sauce is "Mexican Ranch". If you don't enjoy Mayo, you won't like it. Their red sauce is only okay. read more

We love this restaurant! It's the only Mexican restaurant that we go to.. for 10+ years..The atmosphere is awesome.. they play lively Mexican music, that is perfect.. All the staff have great accents, everything about the place is authentic, feel like we stepped into Mexico for dinner. They are so kind, and want to make sure you have a great dinner. I love it when the staff greets us speaking in spanish.. I love this place. When I moved out to this area I had a REALLY hard time finding any kind of Mexican food for some reason; my hometown is pretty full of stellar authentic options so I was bummed. I found this place from a friend and it's REALLY good, and cheap! That can be hard to find in this part of Oakland county. Anyway, I usually get the hard tacos, a cheese dip, and guacamole. My wife and I love this place. For my tastes, it is as good if not better than any of the places down in Mexican Village (Detroit) but it is closer to home (I live in Berkley and work in Madison Heights). Service is fast and efficient. Sometimes it feels like they are trying to rush you through your meal and out the door but I do not believe that is actually the intention. I think they are just excessively attentive. They bring chips and salsa to every table at the start of the meal and provide two salsas. Their red salsa is good but benefits from being spiced up. The white salsa is awesome. I love it like fat kid loves cake. The food covers pretty much the entire Ameri-Mexican menu, and some of the choices are actually a bit more authentic than you find at a lot of places. Note I say some. The food is a good value as well. A normal meal (not one of the value-combo meals) including alchoholic beverage will probably run you around $15-$20 or so after tax and tip. But if you're just heading in at lunch Mon-Thurs and want to get one of the specials (#1-#10) it is only $4.99, which is an awesome deal for the amount and quality of food you get. My favorite lunch combos is the #1: Chile Relleno, Beef Taco, Beans, and Guacamole Salad. Awesome. The margaritas are decent if not a little watered-down tasting sometimes. The Troy location is basically my go-to and I've been to this location once prior years ago. Can't go wrong with the Lunch Specials. $4.99 for an appropriate quantity of food. My personal favorite that's one of the better values of the 10 lunch specials made available is lunch special #6. Two chicken enchiladas (garshined with sour cream, shredded cheese, and tomatoes) with your choice of rice or beans. Tastes amazing with their chips, ranch, and salsa (mild). Spicier salsas are available on request. On that note, customer service could be better as we asked our server for hot salsa but he basically forgot about us. Overall, I think the location is slightly bigger than the Troy one but in a much busier intersection. Troy one is kind of obscure and in a location that doesn't have as many businesses (like on Big Beaver). Decor is pretty nice. There are tvs to watch sports/news if you're not a great conversationalist. If you're a regular, you know the deals/perks with Azteca as they have multiple locations. You'll leave with your stomach filled and wallet still intact. read more

I haven't been to a Grand Azteca before but first impressions reminded me of Mexican Applebee's with a bar and booths to sit. Entrees ranged from $10 - $17 and there were several a la cart option for under $5. For the best bargains, I would recommend their lunch specials priced at under $9 or Combination Dinner combos for $10. There is a very large selection of entrees so you can always get something different here - burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, chimichangas, tacos, quesadillas, etc. I give it 3 stars only because it's nothing special in terms of Mexican. Excellent customer service, good portions, and friendly waitstaff but the overall food isn't anything special - again, reminds me of a Mexican Applebee's. However, it's a great spot if you're looking to host large groups and satisfy a variety of cravings for Mexican food. read more
