I haven't been to a Grand Azteca before but first impressions reminded me of Mexican Applebee's with a bar and booths to sit. Entrees ranged from $10 - $17 and there were several a la cart option for under $5. For the best bargains, I would recommend their lunch specials priced at under $9 or Combination Dinner combos for $10. There is a very large selection of entrees so you can always get something different here - burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, chimichangas, tacos, quesadillas, etc. I give it 3 stars only because it's nothing special in terms of Mexican. Excellent customer service, good portions, and friendly waitstaff but the overall food isn't anything special - again, reminds me of a Mexican Applebee's. Ordered a la carte burrito for our son and took it to him at work. On our way home our son sends text and picture because of raw meat in the burrito. Had to fight rush hour and holiday traffic (and the construction in the area near Azteca) to get son a burger to drop off while picking up raw burrito to take back to Azteca. Guy at Azteca argues that the meat is not raw, then changes to mansplaining to me that it happened because they cook the meat in batches and then mix it up (but it still "doesn't mean it's raw"), to telling me that it's no different than if I had ordered a rare hamburger. I responded that I didn't want OR order a rare hamburger, that I ordered a burrito expecting the meat to be cooked through. He then tells me not to be upset/angry, to which I responded that I became upset/angry because instead of owning the situation he did nothing but talk over me. read more

I have been wanting to come here for years. I finally was able to make it in recently with my brother. This was such a fun experience. I definitely will be coming back. The service was excellent, the way the restaurant is decorated is how I would picture a restaurant to be decorated in Mexico, and the food was really good. My favorite part was that white dip that was served with the tortilla chips. I didn't get a chance to drink here but I've heard the drinks are really good so maybe next time I'll order a margarita! I found this "Mexican" restaurant disappointing for sure. Judging from how crowded the place was, I am not in the majority. The food was not so good- I managed to get a somewhat edible dish by ordering chicken fajitas... my husband tried to go more authentic and failed failed failed. My husband grew up in Mexicantown, so he has very distinct opinions on Mexican food. When we sat down and were given ranch dressing with our chips and salsa, we were confused (Much like Melanie). Confused in a bad way. Like wtf is a Mexican restaurant encouraging people to put ranch on their chips for? That was the first and most glaring clue that this was not going to be a good experience. The service was okay- my water was full and dishes were cleared... but nothing to make me want to come back. read more

The West Bloomfield location has a new manager who doesn't think small orders are important. On Mother's Day, only the big take out orders came out of the kitchen, but not the small orders. After waiting over an hour for my order a man came in and picked up his order, so I asked how long ago he'd called it in and was told 20 minutes ago. I then asked to speak with the manager. A waitress who was cashing out her customer, went back and got my order, and as I was about to pay for my order, the manager came out, was extremely rude, and told me, a long time regular customer, to take my food and never come back!! Let me start out with this observation: Mexico. It's a big country. It's so big, in fact, that you'll find that what people eat in northern Mexico is very different from what people eat in Southern Mexico. So when someone says some restaurant is "The Most Authentic Mexican Food They've Ever Eaten (tm)", take it with a serious grain of salt. In all liklihood, this individual has a particular bent toward a particular type of Mexican Food. That said. This is the most authentic Mexican food I've ever eaten. Kidding. Food: So far everything I have gotten at this place has been nothing short of excellent. It's not your typical small chain Mexican joint, nor is it your typical large chain Mexican joint. It's just *good food* The menu has about two thousand items on it. They vary from northern Mexico to southern Mexico as well as tex-mex. You are given a hot basket of fried corn-chips, a simple tomato salsa and a white salsa that has a name I can't remember. If you prefer things spicy, there's a bottle of El Yucateco to liven it up a bit. Service: This is really the only place I have to ding them. You really have to know what kind of Mexican food you like. Most of the waitstaff does not speak reasonable English, and most of the other staff doesn't speak any English. If you have a question about the preparation of a particular meal, you're going to be better off picking something different. Bonus points, though: My coke is always refilled with vigor and gusto. Atmosphere: This place is clearly family owned, along with the rest of them. This Grand Azteca resides in a building that was formerly occupied by a Denny's. The exterior still resembles it and if you look really hard you can make out the Denny's interior a little bit (imagine a row of old men smoking and drinking coffee right where they have their bar, it's spooky!). No harm. Drink: They have Dos Equies Dark on draft. Do yourself a favor and order the regular size. I made the mistake of getting the "super pint", and was given a glass that was nearly the size of a pitcher. My wife had to drive home, it was really sad. The drink prices are quite reasonable. I can't speak to the rest of the drink choices. I don't like Sangria's or Margaritas and the thought of wine with the kind of Mexican food that I order doesn't seem right. Kid-friendly-ness: They do a good job of putting the parents with children together in the same part of the restaurant (one of those "tricks" that a lot of family owned places don't do well). They have flat screen televisions with sporting events playing. Generally speaking, the place is loud enough to drown out the fussy under-two's if you're there when they're moderately busy. They have a kids menu that is also typical of a large chain (burger/fries sort of variety despite being a very thoroughly Mexican restaurant). Tips: Spicy food: Some Mexican food is intended to be spicy. Many Mexican restaurants -- especially chains -- tone it down. My opinion is that these guys do not. Food that is supposed to be hot is hot. Food that is not supposed to be hot is not. My wife loved the flan. I loved the fried ice-cream. The lunch special is less than $5 - that is cheaper than Taco Bell. Let us just start there. I stopped in because I pass it every day on my way to work. The Denny's of Mexican food is actually pretty apt, as someone else mentioned. The chips are pretty good, but I am not sure what is up with the ranch dip (I threw it on the avocado salad). The salsa was not terrible, but not great. Luckily, they had some Cholula to give it more life. The nice thing is they do not skimp on portion size. I had the chile relleno lunch combo, and it came with a massive portion of beans. The crispy taco it came with was pretty tasty, but the chile was meh-kind of mushy with cheesy cream spilling out once you cut into it. The service was pretty prompt, too. I take responsibility for not being able to read the 2 point type on the coupon BUT we did show it to the waiter and tell him we were using it and he told us "OK". It took about 40 minutes to get our food. I asked 4 times for jalapenos before he finally brought them. Matt's order was wrong but we didn't want to wait another 40 minutes. I had Chile Relleno, taco and enchilada. All three of them tasted exactly the same.. Flavorless with no texture. I saw someone post that it's better than Taco Bell. Not True! The bill came, was $30 and were told at the cashier that the coupon wasn't good for that night and even though we told the manager that the waiter saw the coupon before we ordered, no deal. We went on a Friday night around 7:20 - it was busy, but our party of two was seated right away. We saw another couple come in and sit one table behind us - they were seated, served drinks, nachos and fed and out before we even receieved our food. At 8:03, our server apologized for the wait and said the food would be right out. That's the last we saw of our server. At 8:20 my combo #2 (taco, enchilida and chalupa) and my dates combo #30 (chalupa, burrito and taco) arrived. The plates were burning hot. So hot our server had oven mitts to deliver them. Indicating these plates were likely sitting under the heat lamp for an extended amount of time. The Food was AWFUL. The meat in the taco had no seasoning, no flavour, and not a hint of salt to them. Terrible! The enchilada was disgusting - the cheese didn't taste good, the sauce was so watery and gross. My date was completely disgusted with his meal as well. I'm not sure if the combos include Beans & Rice... if they do... we never got them? We ate, because we were starving. Our beers and our waters were empty... no offer of a second round or refill... makes it hard to wash down garbage food. Then waited to see our server to bring the bill. At 8:35 he returned with the Bill. We got up to pay, and left... vowing never to return again. I think Azteca may be getting a little picked on, and that's not OK with me. Sure, maybe they aren't the ideal Mexican place to sit in and dine, what with MexicanTown about 10 minutes down the freeway, but i'll tell you, they work in a pinch. I ordered a carryout Monday, and I was happy with what I got. I ordered the #10, quesedilla, chalupa, and enchilada. It came with a big bag of fresh chips and two dippers. This was all $4.99, people!!! The chalupa itself is actually kind of a dumb idea because you lose the shell completely, but the toppings go great on the quesedilla and the enchilada!! That all worked for me! I took the chips home and ate them with the bf for TV snack time. I don't know what quite to make of the white dipping sauce either, but it reminds me of almost a mexicali dip. I really like it!! It's sweet and spicy. The salsa is homemade and tasted like...salsa... and it completely served it's purpose :) I would TOTALLY recommend this place as a lunch carry out any day of the week. I had never been to Grand Azteca before so I agreed to dinner here with a friend. Nothing special.... The chips and salsa were good, but the salsa definitely needed the hot sauce on the table's help. My friend had the Combo #1, Two Enchiladas and a Taco with Rice..all beef. It was a bit odd that you could not pick your meat with the combo dinners. Beef was it or you had to fork over an additional $1.50 for chicken..no bueno!! I had the Enchiladas Pablanas with rice and "salad" (this was shredded iceberg topped with some cubed tomato and a scoop of guacamole..so hardly a salad). The enchiladas were just meh, the pablanas sauce was too sweet for me, I expected a spicier sauce for sure. it was okay after I added hot sauce on the table to my meal. I came here after major house decor shopping super tired and was starving so googled mexican and dropped in here, this is seriously the worst experience at a Mexican restaurant in my life. I cannot believe the positive reviews here. Ordered chicken enchiladas, beef tacos, beans, rice to split with my boyfriend and I was appalled and ashamed to call this Mexican food since I am Mexican. The salsa they had on the enchiladas was straight up cheap tomato sauce from a can, the ground beef was disgusting and cheap quality. Everything was bad. Tasted like cardboard. Grand Azteca caters to Mexican-loving patrons and refugees from the madhouse occasionally called Oakland Mall, though at this time of year, it's Oakland Trap. The beau and I cooled our heels and chilled out with promises of authentic, cheap Mexican food and margaritas. First up, strawberry margarita all the way. They offer a variety of flavours and sizes, including the diminutive 9 ounce "lunch margarita" so you don't stagger into the office and pass out under your desk. The beau went for the strawberry and received a swirled concoction weeping deliciousness in a few minutes, and it was pretty darned good all around. Prices can't be beat at lunch, and dinner is still more than fair. I forgot to print out the two entrees for $10.99 coupon on their website, so definitely make sure to load it up on your phone or grab that before you go for even more savings. The menu is huge and covers everything from chimichangas and tostadas to elaborate options I can barely remember. I had a hard time choosing and went for tacos carne asada; the beau did a burrito. My tacos came with a huge plate of refried beans, enough for three, a pot of tomatillo sauce, some pico de mayo (I think), and corn tortillas stuffed with meat and nothing else. No cheese, lettuce or tomato? I felt deprived. After pouring a bit of the tomatillo sauce and stealing the beau's lettuce, I made a somewhat decent taco but the flavour wasn't there, and I hadn't any heart for it. His burrito was pretty basic but filling. I nommed on the half an avocado sliced onto shredded lettuce acting as a salad or a bed. The avocado was fantastic; I would have just eaten that. Both of us really felt the food was lacking a certain spice and flavour that we hoped would be there. On previous occasions, the beau has really enjoyed Grand Azteca. Perhaps they were having an off night? I don't care for how the tacos come with nothing on them, and insufficient toppings to get exciting. I would've given my right arm for some hot sauce. It might be a case of asking for extras, but too late now. I've eaten here multiple times since it opened...it's nothing special, but it's better than Taco Bell if you're craving Mexican. Our last visit will probably be our final one, though. My husband and I both ordered a lunch special. When our orders came out, the waiter brought out the wrong (more expensive) order for my husband. He pointed it out to the waiter, who immediately got an attitude about it before finally asking if my husband wanted to send it back and wait for the correct one to be prepared. Since my food was sitting there waiting, he said no and ate what had been brought out. When the bill came, the waiter charged us for the more expensive dish that HE erroneously put in instead of what my husband ordered.. When my husband pointed out that he shouldn't have to pay extra for the waiter's mistake (even if he did eat it), the waiter got even nastier about it and flat out refused to adjust the bill. My husband immediately hunted down the manager, and had to argue with him to get the bill adjusted. The food is decent but we were so turned off by the HORRIBLE customer service, we won't be back. Great food though, good prices and the Queso Fundido is a must. WARNING: This place has cockroaches! We came here a few months ago (delayed review because I couldn't remember the restaurant's name - or maybe just repressed the memory) and left within 20 minutes of arriving. The place was completely empty except for us and a handful of waiters, who all just sort of stared at us for a while before reluctantly coming over. We ordered some drinks from a bizarrely stoic and awkward teenage waiter, then proceeded to wait 15 minutes for a beer and a very weak margarita. Most importantly: while we were waiting, I moved a menu on the table and sent a giant cockroach skittering off toward me. I screamed, jumped up, etc. When the waiter came back with our drinks, we told him that our table had a cockroach. "Okay. Are you ready to order?" He responded, unfazed. We stared back at him. No reaction, no concern, no getting management, nothing. After thinking about it for a minute, we decided to book it and said we'd just pay for our drinks. The kid looked dejected but said nothing whatsoever about it and disappeared. Their food might be good; I'll never know, but at any rate I don't really want to know. We have enjoyed our visits to Grand Azteca. Is it top-of-the-line Mexican food? No. Is it pretty solid food with pretty good service? Yes! One of the stand-out things we've seen is that they serve molcajete (or "mortar"), which I had when I visited the state of Jalisco, Mexico. No other restaurant I've been to have served this piping-hot combination. We also really enjoy their spin on fried ice cream. What a great birthday treat! It looked gorgeous when we had it. They do serve a ranch dip with their chips and salsa (weird, yet a secret indulgence of mine) and the salsa isn't fabulous. The tables feature softcore-looking Mexican paintings, which don't exactly spell "dinner" to me, but to each their own. Despite a few idiosyncrasies though, this is a pretty darn decent place to go in Madison Heights! Stop by and give it a try. read more
