Absolutely love it here. The only downside to Grand Central, this Grand Central in particular, is its proximity to my Pilates studio. Meaning, I can leave a crazy Pilates cardio workout two doors down and then wander into Grand Central and undo all of that work with a single sticky bun, a kick ass sandwich, and a bowl of soup. Their coffees and lattes are made with love and absolutely delicious, their pizza crusts are the only ones that I will use to make pizza at home (Pro tip: check the standing freezer on the right for both pizza crust and cookie dough), and I have a friend in CA that I can't go visit unless I bring him a pecan bun. Even when the line is out the door, the servers are always friendly and polite, and the line moves steadily. There is plenty of seating both in the front and in the rear of the building, the bathrooms are always clean, and it is always the right vibe. If only it were a couple blocks away from Pilates, at least I'd have to walk there and burn off a few more calories before going inside lol. read more

Very friendly staff and great bread! But the last few times I have been very disappointed with sandwiches. I ordered the turkey sandwich and I feel a $16 sandwich should have more than one piece of crumbled turkey bits, fresh lettuce and a full piece of Swiss cheese. Grand Central has become a real meeting place for good food and warm hospitality in our community. We go there often, to meet friends and neignbors for breakfast, lunch or just a bakery treat and latte. Their soups are outstanding, as are the sandwiches. I left the bakery feeling so upset and uncared for that I regretted my purchase. My last experience going to Grand Central Bakery made me never want to go back. I used to go to semi-regularly for the past 10 years since moving to Portland. I have loved their food! The last time I went I asked if it would be possible to add avocado to the Turkey Deluxe Sandwich in replacement of the bacon and was told "no." Then I asked if I could supplement the cost with a little extra Turkey instead since I could not add avocado. I was told that it would cost a $1 extra to make any changes to the sandwich. This sandwich with bacon costs $16.25 (the most expensive sandwich on the menu). They wanted to charge me 17.25 for a turkey sandwich for an extra slice of Turkey in replacement of the bacon... I just didn't want to pay full price for this expensive sandwich if I was not getting bacon on it. I ended up getting the tuna melt instead because I could not justify the 17.25 cost for a turkey sandwich As a semi-regular person who's received accommodations in the past without any issues, I left feeling so confused and frustrated with the interaction. read more

I've stopped by here several times over the past few months. Bread in general is solid 4 stars. Get there earlier rather than later as specialty loves like the rye tend to sell out. I finally had breakfast there. My partner tried the twice baked ham & cheese on a croissant. That was not a good choice. It was rather bland and possibly a day-old (2 star is being generous). I, on the otherhand, thoroughly enjoyed my Sasquash grilled sandwich. I was only disappointed that there was no arugula or beet greens to cut the sweetness of the squash and the fatty cheese. Delicious it was, though. Staff were friendly, but I wonder why they didn't ask if my partner wanted the croissant sandwich heated up? The customer service is so fantastic that I hate writing anything negative. But the sandwich I got was so hard to eat it made my jaw hurt. Their baguette (which I didn't realize would be covered in poppyseeds) was so tough that it felt like I just got into a fight on olive oil right before heading to jail for failing an opiate drug test. It was worse than how my late grandpa-in-law would describe the work it took to eat a salad. The olive oil splattered on my shirt despite me trying to be hella careful (and they kindly gave me baking soda to absorb the oil) so that was a real "marker" of a bad sandwich for me. It wasn't horrible because it did have flavor (they use La Porteña chimichirri which I'm a big fan of) but the bread could've been a bit easier to eat. read more

My local bakery, as I must have bread. The place is almost bustling but the staff stays friendly and efficient. Campognola (aka 'campy') is my go to but I also love the rye and the seeded baguettes. And the latte dunkers and most any fruit pastru. Have not had their coffee but we use the same brand at home. And how about the sandwiches? Great place for lunch. We love going to grand central but this time around It took an entire hour to get two breakfast sandwiches out to us. There seemed to be confusion between upper management and workers, not really knowing how to execute the orders. There should be someone standing there grinding them out, but I would look over and no one would be there. There didn't seem to be a sense of urgency in getting the sandwiches made.. There were a few people (us not included) that ended asking about their orders because it was taking so long! We did not mention anything because it was pretty obvious with visual inspection that the workers were not working effectively as a unit. Upper management needs to see that the ball is carried and not fumbled. Hopefully this will be taken as constructive criticism because we want to see you guys shine! read more

Wonderful S.E. bakery and cafe. I don't have much to add to the many reviews it already has but we will say it was a lovely find while we were here for vacation. Some out of the case items and some made to order. It seemed busy but we easily got a table in the back. I waited 30 min for an overcooked egg and bacon sandwich. 1 egg and 2 pieces of bacon on a dry roll. Zero customer service. Woman at the grill was rude and did not care one bit. When I inquired about my order, she practically ignored me. There seemed to be plenty of people working and they were all much more interested in talking amongst themselves then helping customers. I like the pastries and bread a lot, but have never eaten there. A friend wanted to and not being a fan of sandwiches, I was happy to see curried chicken salad on tbe online menu for this location. It was not on house menu so I ordered a toasted cheese sandwich. The combination of Gouda and cheddar cheese was good although the bread was only sort of toasted and it came with a pickle. One orders at counter and they call your name to pick up. We were sitting in back room so when I went to get our coffee, I was going to carry both and they were full to the brim.
