What a hidden gem! Their produce is fresh, the prepared foods authentic, and the shelves are stocked with great products. We hadn't been here before, and our friends said to try it, especially for picking up a few produce items... so when we ran out of strawberries, we decided to give this place a try. We were not disappointed. The strawberries were fresh and flavorful. I saw the tamales and had to try one. So I took one home. We added a few authentic bottles of different types of hot sauce to our basket and checked out. When I got home, I added some of the hot sauce to the tamale. Nom, nom, nom! It was delish! read more

Thanks for being open on X-mas day! I forgot that grocery stores in the burbs are usually closed on Holidays. And I may not have discovered this place had that not been the case. Just needed a couple of vegetables, but was sure to grab a couple of tamales on the way out. I have since learned that La Union Supermarket is well known for their prepared foods on most days of the week. Look forward to trying their tacos and more when I visit next time. read more

There's parking right in front of the store. Typical dingy grocery store but the gem is to walk straight in to a cooked food deli. I ordered the tamales, rice & beans & some beef stew. Very authentic & very delicious. Highly recommend. read more

Where else can you get delicious, authentic steak tacos for $1.29 apiece. This is one of those out of the way places that only insiders and Highwood Mexicans know about. It's a Mexican supermarket next to Jerry's Liquors in Highwood. BUT, when you go inside, you can get all kinds of delicious Mexican specialties from the kind lady behind the meat counter. Tacos, tortas, chilaquiles, whatever you want. The previous reviewer said she was "scared" after taking a look at the meat counter. Well, this is the real stuff, not a tourist attraction. There's nice big sponge-like cow stomach right there, liver, ears, hooves, yes, that's the tradition of using every part of the animal. Bottom line- You can get cheap, fresh, authentic mexican food made to order. AND you get to feel like a badass because you get Mexican food from the place Mexicans get it from. Getting food from here isn't just going into some restaurant. It's a cultural experience. Highly recommended! Check it out, you won't be sorry. read more

I cant tell you how upset I am on how I was treated when I went to return a package of tortillas that I purchased 2hours earlier that were all stuck together. I brought them to the cashier and she then brought them in the back and was talking with an older woman who must have been the owner. After 3 or 4 minutes of them talking, the older woman came out and complained on how she is losing money. She then proceeded to open another package and with her dirty hands took out the tortillas and showed me how to un fold them, insulting my intelligence. She then put them back in the bag and gave them to me. It was a $2 pack of tortillas! She made a huge Ben Hur out of it. I will not go back!!!! No one needs to be treated like that. read more

A real find. Great little Mexican grocery store with fresh produce and a wonderful butcher shop, but the real treasure is the homemade Mexican food prepared fresh daily. My all time favorite are the carnitas. You can buy the meat by the pound, or they will make tacos for you. Delicious! read more

I was looking forward to some deliciously authentic Mexican food, but I was utterly disappointed with this pitiful excuse for a torta and tacos. I have eaten plenty authentic Mexican food, here and in Mexico, and I am ashamed for La Union to be serving food like this. The tortillas were cheap and completely fell apart after taking one bite. The meat (cecina) was dry and fatty, and was almost impossible to eat without overworking your jaw. The torta was the saddest looking thing I have seen in a while. It was as if they used below par ingredients and threw it together with stuff left over from a few days ago. It was so greasy, and a torta should not be greasy like that at all. Overall, I wish I could give this less than 1 star. Needless to say, if you want to eat a good ass torta, go to Tacos el Norte in Highwood instead!! You won't be disappointed there, and it is definitely worth a few extra dollars. Cheaper is NOT always better. Last time I'm eating at La Union -- I've had too many bad food experiences there, and I'm done. read more

Stopped in to pick up a little something while on a long bike ride. Ended up buying two fresh-made tacos al pastor, a chile relleno in sauce and two particularly delicious bananas, all for under $6. The tacos were pretty good--loaded up with cilantro, and the meat was juicy and devoid of nasty bits. The chile relleno was just okay. As a grocery, it's pretty small, but they pack a fair amount in. read more

This place always has whatever I want to eat and flavor to spare! Sometimes I'll come in and just ask for a breakfast burrito and they'll just feed my hunger with scrambled eggs, beans, guacamole, cheese, and some jalapeño wrapped up in a flour tortilla! They always have skirt steak to put on the grill and their customer service is always with a smile! Oh and need I remind you their fruit and vegetable area is always ready to eat!
