Have you ever been popped into a dark, dank liquor store that has bars on the windows and wondered, "What the hell am I doing here?" That is definitely not the case at Hy-Vee! It looks a lot like their grocery stores but for booze. The layout is perfect - I always make my way to the back wall full of various craft brews. They separate these from the easy drinking summer beers like Miller Lite, which have their own separate case. I love the long slow walk back and forth by the craft beer wall as I pick out a weekend sixer. The wine is laid out by region and by style, which makes it really manageable to figure out what bottle of not-too-cheap/not-too-pricy bottle I'm going to pick up. For real though, the people here are always the best. I used to live closeby and while I didn't go in that often, they still seem to recognized me and always make conversation. One knock (that's not their fault) is the parking lot here can be a zoo, especially if a beer delivery truck is taking up half the lot. You've got several other shops in this little strip, and people completely forget how to drive here. Multiple cars back out at the same time causing gridlocks, and it can be hell to try to head south on State Line road once you're in here. Just a heads up. I really wish they had more locations all around, but in the meantime I'll always go here if I'm nearby.

This is a relatively small shop and the selections for beer/spirits definitely reflects that, this is a wine focused shop, and if you are in the market for wine then this is a good place to shop. They have a great variety of wine, actually better than most stores that several times the size, and the employees are very knowledgable and have lots of recommendations to help you find the perfect bottle. I do most of my wine shopping here and it has always been great. The beer and spirits selection is pretty mediocre, they carry the standards from each category, but you won't likely find something rare or coveted. The big issue, especially when it comes to their beer, is it just doesn't move on the shelves. I've actually stopped buying a lot of my beer from them, especially IPA's because most of the ones on the shelves are several months old and close to, or past the best by date. If you are looking for fresh craft beer, I would look elsewhere.

Not only can you get a discount on the wines used, but it was interesting, educational, entertaining, and tasty! They provided bottled water and snacks before, and the tasting included 4 different Ghirardelli chocolate square flavors to go with multiple wines, including red, white, rosé, and dessert varieties, and from sweet to not. The class leader and his assistant were friendly and very knowledgeable, and gave an informative and fun presentation, with input from attendees. The only drawback was not having any clear direction or signage to get to the classroom, and a couple of attendees had to be "rescued" from the many intersecting rows in the large facility!

If memory serves me correctly this used to be an old berbiglia spot. Just thinking about those stores takes me back to my early 20s and thinking about how much KC has changed in a decade. At any rate, I pulled over, dodged some rain, and came inside. Now, anyone who remembers Berbiglias in KC might remember them as I do - kind of basic, a bit dirty, and the kind of place that you just kind of tolerated. I mean, I was in my twenties so I didn't know liquor stores could be nice and have variety, but now I do, and boy was I glad when I walked in the doors and found out that this newly redone Plaza Liquor is NICE. Not only is the interior nice, the folks working are super friendly, and they have an incredible selection. I found some craft beers from STL that my husband hadn't been able to find in a long time at liquor stores closer to our house, and they of course carried a good variety of wine and liquor as well. Overall this one is a great little neighborhood liquor store, and is definitely one I'll return to if I'm once again needing to pick up a bottle of wine on the way home.
