I'm an L.A. native that's been in New York for close to five years. This is one of the few Mexican places where I feel like I'm not being ripped off. Nothing spectacular, but a burrito for $3.50 you can't really beat it. Great salsas, decent guacamole, stellar tortas. I like this place. I'm used to California Mexican food, which for some reason we like to idolize around here. But coming from there, and having lived in San Francisco's Mission District, I know there's good Cali Mexican, and... yeah, let's leave the latter undiscussed. But this is Brooklyn, and this is Grand Morelos, and I'll be darned if this isn't some very fine food, at a completely reasonable price. I come in on a Thursday night around 10 pm, lowering expectations in "abandon all hope" fashion... and the first thing I notice is: Hey, it smells good in here! I seat myself and check out the menu -- oh cool, they have lengua! I haven't had good beef tongue since that taco stand outside of Fresno; what, only $4 for a burrito WITH guacamole?! Yes please. Only one small hitch is they have a credit card minimum of ten dollars. Okay fine, can you make it a platter? Ten-fifty, sold. In five minutes it's in front of me, steaming. I ask for more hot sauce, expecting Tapatio or something similar; they bring me a bowl of house-made green spicy sauce to go with my meal. I ladle it on, and dig in. It's delicious. Completely good, flavors well-balanced, quality beans and rice and guacamole, but the real stand-out -- is the lengua. Just think about the tongue, easily one of the most nimble, agile, dextrous muscles in an animal's body. It's interesting, and a bit baffling, that this meat, which is considered a delicacy in other countries (I think we export most of ours to Japan) is ignored by the greater populace in the U.S.. Done well, it's effing amazing. Yeah, guess what? They do it well here. I feel like I just shook hands with the Dalai Lama. Of course it's just my experience, my only and first one at Grand Morelos thus far. I can say also that the service was straightforwardly good, friendly and attentive. Good food at a good price. But not the best in the area which are also the same price. The best thing is this place never closes. If you want a decent snack at 1 am you can come here. I use to come here for the breakfast but their homefries were just not very good. They cook bacon by pressing it down which runs the flavor for me. read more

24hour Mexican bakery/diner (that somehow still sneaks italian pastries in there..) SO CHEAP. A 4$ burrito, they even make shakes with fruit and soy milk. Yes please. I love this place for breakfast, sometimes I wake up much earlier than intended and when that happens the first thing that comes to mind is hue is divorciados. That's eggs with rice and beans over a crispy tortilla with two types of salsa. Get that in your face and you'll be feeling fine and ready to start your day, or go back to bed like I like to do. We've ordered dinner several times from them as well and usually been very happy with what I would consider fresh diner food with festive Mexican food options. You can't beat a 24-hour Mexican diner that actually serves traditional Mexican food. Bistec Encebollado is usually my go to. Delicious strip steak with some rice, fresh beans, and vegetables. Their banana milkshakes are pretty mind-numbingly good too. When they don't run out anyway. But if Mexican food isn't your thing and you're looking for a regular, greasy midnight snack, they have your usual burgers and such too. Never had them though so can't speak to that. read more

My friend and I were coming back from a music festival and it was pretty late so I searched for a place open late and Grand Morelos fit the bill. It's advertised as a neighborhood Mexican and American diner/backry so when we walked in at 2 am I wasn't surprised at the very homey environment. The food was decent. The vibe was quiet and calm. The five stars are for the Tres Leches Cake, I order it every week for my restaurant, and it is absolutely the best in New York. It comes either with strawberry or peach filling and walnut, and it is out of this world. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE !! The burrito that was brought out to me was a complete disaster. It had a horrible taste that left a terrible after taste in my mouth. The service was terrible as well. The waitress took our order with a completely unnecessary attitude. When we asked for any sort of hot sauce or spice ( that was the only way we were going to be able to eat the food ) she walked away mumbling something under her breath. She was un attentive to us and then had the nerve to hand write in her own tip. The restaurant it self was unsanitary dirty tables, sticky floors and an odor that had us wanting to leave ASAP. Terrible...if you must eat here than get the basic eggs and bacon. I had the chicken torta and the chicken was so thin that I could barely taste it. It was also very dry! We also ordered a burger for my little cousin and it was a frozen burger. The breakfast sausage were cut in half and deep fried to the point that they were curled up when the food was delivered to our table. The chicken fingers were burned and extremely little and thin. The best part about the whole meal was the jarrito(Mexican soda) and the fries (which weren't even that good). The prices aren't even that cheap. I will never go there again. My husband and I used to eat here every single Friday for almost a year. And he's a self-described food snob from Genoa, Italy. He loves the food, especially la torta. I always tell him not to get the damn torta because it will make him fat, but it must have some addictive substance in it, like umami.....melted queso fresco. I always beg him for a bite like a puppy and he makes me wait for it and I want to *strangle* him. La salsa verde is also addictive. Sometimes when the spouse goes to the bathroom, I spoon-feed it to myself. So now we go about once a month. The food hits the spot - and is the right price. You have to understand this is a diner. A DINER. Ok? Seems to be run by family. If you want to play petty tyrant on Yelp and damage the business of a family-owned joint the locals depend on, screw you. Anything with lengua is a treat. Add guacamole for heart health. And you can because it's not $5 extra. I've been to Rosarito Fish Shack in Williamsburg 2x and each time realized I was paying TWICE for SMALLER tacos than Grand Morelos' just because the word "panko" is on their chi chi menu. Seriously, Rosarito averages $11 for 2 tacos, and GM is $2.50 PER. There are times for Rosarito, and there are times for Grand Morelos, and the ratio of their frequency is 1:50. When I have people come in from out of town and we need to get something I often take them to GM so they don't get bled dry by NYC prices and can walk away full. The vibe is real - I don't mean it's real Mexican because I can't know that, but it's just a relief from the self-conscious, polished joints. read more

Tonight I called to make a pickup and this woman answered and took the order. When I got to the restaurant after almost 10 min I have waited for 20 more min. When I fist came in the woman told me that she didn't get any order like that and the other person working with her told her that I did call. A little embracing for them. After they did realize that I did make an order I waited longer and longer. When i finally decided to ask the (Very Rude) woman she told me in this exact words:"I don't know they cooking" with half English. When I told her what do you mean you don't know what you don't care she basically answered "no i don't care" Yeah amazing as you can tell! The food is Alright not the "best" the one thing I hate about this place is that the waitress doesn't know how to attend you probably for example normally a waitress should check up on you if everything is ok. I haven't been to many Mexican dinners, but Grand Morelos feels exactly like what I always imagined. This means that I don't mind the spotty and sometimes awful service; nor do I mind the comely interior. Two thirds of the menu are American items, and I have no idea what these items are like. The last third of the menu is full of tasty and cheap Mexican dishes. Not the best food, or service, or anything really, but somehow it gets the job done and that's all I really wanted from them. This place is awesome! Servers are friendly and helpful and the prices cant be beat! Try the tamales! They are only 1.75, come out steaming hot on a plate and are the best anywhere!!! Yes, the green sauce is the best in town-they should have it bottled and sold by the gallon! Tostadas and huevos rancheros are also recommended! okay...so most of my reviews are 4-5 stars. but shoot me if I go to places that I like. this is no gourmet restaurant. this is your down and dirty mexican place. the waitresses are all women, all spanish speaking and all represent mexico. hard. green, red, white is often the outfit. spanish soap operas play in the background or MTV Tres. Its my fill of spanish pop culture. i love it. the food is good and reasonably priced. i use "reasonably priced" in another review so i think i should give my idea of reasonable. $12 a beer = NOT REASONABLE. $8-12 an entree at a sit down establishment = REASONABLE. back to the point. i go to grand morelos for one thing. CHIMICHANGAS. one day i had it...and...yeah...best chimichangas i've ever had. they do it in chorizo, chicken, beef. comes with rice/beans, guacamole, sour cream, tomato & lettuce. i walk out full after a coffee and my meal for about $10-12 including tip. free refills on coffee BTW. they also have other things. fried shrimp, breakfast foods...yada ya...pretty extensive american/mexican menu. overall: you will find me here once or twice a month and it is definately one of my places to be. cheap. filling. good. read more

I've only ever ordered the american diner food here but I really appreciate the quality and price of that. Probably my favorite diner breakfast in Williamsburg & Bushwick. The pancakes have cornmeal in them and its a nice touch. Im guessing that deep fry the sausage because its always really crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle. They cook poached eggs perfectly every time and for only $4.25. I'd rather eat them here then pay $12 at a hispter brunch place and get hard yolks. read more
