I ordered Combo #3 (vegetarian style), which was a tostada, soft taco, rice, & beans. basically, it was relatively authentic but tasty nonetheless. i think i'm just spoiled since I live in California and Mexican food there is on it's A game 24/7. The green salsa surprised me though because it was BOMB, and being a salsa connoisseur, that's says a lot coming from me. anyway this place is just really rad only because it's cheap and they sell Mexican soda in the bottle, and there is really nothing that can top those things. so, if you live in the area, try it. read more

I've ordered from here a few times from seamless. They deliver in less than 30 minutes, and the food comes pipping hot. The Mexican platter specials are one of the best deals in the hood - a burrito, taco, rice and beans for less than 10 bucks is pretty off the charts. The food isn't the best I have ever had, but for the price and quantity it is a good bet for cheap eats. Also, their breakfast options are really on point. The Huevos Rancheros are great, so are their chilaquiles. Final plus is they serve everything with a spicy green sauce that is almost as good as Sophie's Cuban. read more

Good, inexpensive Mexican food. I love this place. The first time I ate here I got a bean burrito which came looooaddded with guacamole AND had guacamole on the side. Yesss! Their avacado salad is a entire avocado sliced over iceburg lettuce, which can be good or bad depending how you look at it. It's pretty good if you're looking to add avocado to another dish. Food from the Mexican menu is good and reasonably priced. I have not tried the American menu. The mango milkshakes are tasty and refreshing. Service is slow. The customers a combination of hipsters, Latin Americans and everyday working Brooklynites. The atmosphere is like a Mexican restaurant combined with a soda fountain. There is a bakery in the front section. The Internet jukebox is basically all Latin American music. I'm hoping they add some Pavement, M.I.A. and Buddy Holly to better reflect the diversity of their patronage. I think I am dreaming on that score though. read more

When it's 3:35am and I'm starving and mexican food is on the mind, I go straight to Grand Morelos. This place is awwwweeeesome. My roommate first brought me here 3 years ago and since then, I have brought all my friends, both drunk and not, to have tortas and Mexican Coke. What to order: My absolute favorite is the cheese torta. It is so amazingly good. Huge toasted roll stuffed with queso (the oogy chewy gooey white mexican cheese), slices of avocado, lettuce, tomato, onions, and some kind of sauce. I then top it with the green hot sauce (pretty spicy so be careful) that they have and it's pure heaven. That and a Diet Coke and I'm good. I don't drink regular Coke very often but if you're interested, they carry Mexican Coke which is in a bottle and it's what you can get in Mexico. People tell me it tastes different. I can't really remember. Other good things to order: burritos, tacos, nachos (it's topped with American cheese), and fries. I haven't had any of their breakfast items or any of the non-mexican-food items so I can't offer any suggestions in those categories. There's also a bakery case in the front. Top picks from there: flan and the cookie that looks like a palmier. All the ladies that work here are really nice. The place gets pretty crowded in the wee hours of Friday and Saturday night and during those times, service moves a little slower so while you're waiting for your food or for the check, watch telemundo or listen to some classic mexican jams from the jukebox. read more

Grand Morelos is a charming slightly seedy local spot that offers up excellent authentic Mexican. Their tamales are spot on, we usually have the Chicken, Rajas con Queso I've also enjoyed their Tongue Tacos with the tongue thinly sliced like lunch meat. They use Iceberg Lettuce instead of Cabbage, but the crema and queso are legit, as is the Guac. I've never tried the more Diner-esque offerings and the dessert look very scary, but I'm just a whipped cream and jam snob seeing as my moms was from London, the land of good creme. Four stars for always being there when we need it, their 'green sauce' (which I could practically drink by the gallon), the strawberry shake, the tortas, the burritos... the guacamole. Oh what a sad, sad experience this was. I have come to expect most Mexican food in NYC to be mediocre at best, and I can live with that. Some are better than others, but in general the cuisine is too easy to screw up too bad. Im also never one to really rate service because as long as decent food comes out, I dont care about your crappy NY attitude. Thats for you to work out in therapy, not me. Unless it takes 40 minutes for 2 tacos to come out at 930pm when there are only about 4 other customers in the joint. My waitress never once came over to check on me, or my food apparently. As a homesick Texan who craves good Mexican food, I can vouche for Grand Morelos. It's got all the charm of a hole-in-the-wall taqueria with a bit of a diner slant. One half of the menu is typical American diner food (hamburgers, waffles, pancakes) while the other half is Mexican. The lengua tacos and torta are just bits of heaven delivered from a greasy griddle. At about $6, the quality-to-quantity ratio is just right. This is not some pretentious $4 organic taco stand. This place plays for real and has a clientele to back it up -- day workers, families, young and old. And the bakery. I discovered the Nido roll (top left corner of the bread shelf) and haven't been the same. It's a semi-sweet donut-type roll wrapped in a fried pastry strip sometimes topped with chopped walnuts. My favorite neighborhood restaurant. You can get a meal or just coffee and pastries any time of the day. I love their chicken tinga tacos, their mole and their guacamole. Very often I meet there with friends for breakfast, to demolish eggs Benedict with home fries and a fresh orange juice and of course a cappuccino or cortado café? Perfect for late night! My friend and I went here around 4am and it was so delicious! The portions were just straight and the food came really quickly. The prices are actually really good too. I got a vegetarian burrito (nom nom) and a chocolate milkshake (the server made it vanilla at first and then looked at my friend's face and went to change it, thank you!) I remember eating here regularly from 2001-2004 and always remember that when you were looking for a cheap good meal at 5am (not because you just woke up, but because you haven't been to sleep yet) that this was the place to go. As reliable as ever I stumble into the doors at 6am and was excited to find 2 things. 1) They're still open, 2) They're food is still inexpensive and delicious. Eating with my eyes and not my brain. I ordered nachos, tostada, burrito, and quesadillas which totaled less than $20 and unbeknownst to me, was easily enough food for two people. It was funny when after the order was put in and I was eating my nachos (a large pile of chips covered in guacamole, cheese, lettuce, beans and sour cream) the waitress was listed off the items and was shocked to learn that I was in fact going to be eating all of them right there and that it was fine to bring them out all at once. I think it's pretty hard to mess up a tostada, so it was expected that the carne asada and fixins that came on it were flavorful and appropriate with the tostada being nice and crispy. The tinga de pollo was a bit peppery, but when it comes in a good sized burrito (as opposed to Cali sized, or large enough to use as a weapon) that only costs $3.50, you don't really care as much. The quesadillas were made with the white fry cheese (queso blanco not cheddar) and also came with the same lettuce, cream and guacamole). I walked in and it was dark, I walked out, and it was dawn. Let me preface this review by saying Grand Morelos is a strange place. It's absolutely impossible to categorize. It has a bakery, looks like a diner, but serves not only diner food but really, surprisingly good cheap Mexican food. I first heard of it on someone's suggestion that I try the "$4 burritos" there. I was naturally intrigued because $4 for a burrito sounds like a total steal, and I honestly didn't expect that it would be all that good. I was completely wrong. The burrito was great. Simple, no frills, exactly what I was in the mood for. I've been back many times since and only once did I ever eat anything other than a burrito - no surprise, their other Mexican food offerings are also really good. These days I'm usually ordering to pick-up, but I will say that when I used to go to the restaurant that the service tended to be a bit slow, although very friendly. A Mexican place that splits the difference between a taco establishment and a dinner, Morelos has been churning out tacos and tortas long before I moved to the neighborhood and I think they'll be here long after I depart. It's open all night, so whenever the tostada craving strikes, you can come up here. Considering the other options in the area include the god-awful Isla Cuchifritos and the pervy spin the bottle bar, it's nice that this place is here. In the middle of the day, when New Mexico Place is open a couple blocks down, it's not the best option in the area. There the spicing is better and balanced. Here, in the tradition of dinners on both sides of the border, calorie bombs dominate the menu. In the Bradt guides to countries in far sides of the world, they name their second category of hotel "cheap and cheerful." With the gecko stencil on the door and the lights always on, that's a pretty good way to describe Grand Morelos. read more

Went along to wait with a friend last night while she got a new piece tattooed at Greene Ave Tattoo a few stores down. While waiting, I decided to surf Yelp and see what our options for dinner were. Felt a hankering for tacos and knew what was going down. I decided upon this gem. I ordered: Chicken taco- (originally $2.00 but sour cream is $.50 extra as well as guacamole, so $3.00) this taco was absolutely loaded. At first sight, I was a bit overwhelmed with the size and unsure that I'd be able to take it on. It might look like a Mexican restaurant shat on your face and hands afterwards, but your tastebuds will be so satisfied, it won't even matter. Also, dat corn tortilla. Nachos- $4.50, they come with cotija cheese, american cheese, guacamole and a whole bunch of love. Absolutely scrumptious. Paired with some pico de gallo and you'll be in Heaven, for sure. I was totally full after that and the taco, but then again, some people are bottomless pits, so this might be no challenge for you lucky bastards. Their guacamole is absolutely perfect. The chicken was seasoned just the way I love it and I couldn't be more pleased with my time there last night. I read some reviews about a less than pleasant waiter and her grumpiness. Glad to report that my waiter was kind and did pass on some smiles. I highly recommend this place to those of you that are particular about your Mexican food, I know I am. This place makes me less and less anxious to go back to California for the seemingly one of a kind hole in the walls. I love coming across places that come so close, though. A-maz-ing! At first when I opened up my bag when I got home, I thought the burrito was kind of small, but then again, for $4.50, maybe not. I opened it and the burrito wasn't rolled the way you picture burritos, it was more like a large taco. I put some of the homemade green hot sauce and dug in.... And I have NEVER been more pleased with a burrito. My roommate said it perfectly -- This is our Seinfield spot. The drinks are cheap. The food is cheap. The desserts are cheap and EVERYTHING is good. I can't go without splitting the french fries with my dining companion as they are double fried and the perfect consistency. They run only $2.50 and my wallet couldn't be happier about this new find. Grand Morelos is a solid very inexpensive diner with a Mexican flare. I ordered the weird stuff I always Get...a coffee, with milk. I got a coffee that was old and the milk was hot. I ordered a chocolate shake, "extra thick" and it came back runny and thin. But good. And a turkey burger which was pretty decent. Overall this is a perfect place to sit down and save a buck in Williamsburg/Bushwick. Lots of pies and cakes.
