Grand Szechuan (大四川) is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities. My family and I have been going here for great Chinese food for many years. The menu has a nice variety of dishes, including different types of noodles. One of my favorite dishes is the Minced Pork Sauce with Sliced Noodles. The restaurant is pretty spacious with a nice range of seating options - from booth to large round tables for bigger groups. The service is usually pretty good and fast. We have generally enjoyed the food here. However, we believe there is room for improvement when it comes to hospitality and customer service. During our recent visit, our server was not very welcoming or helpful while we were trying to place our order. We showed a picture of a dish from the restaurant's own menu that we were interested in ordering, but were informed that the item was only included for display purposes and was not actually available. This was confusing and somewhat disappointing, especially since customers naturally expect the dishes featured on the menu to be offered. Unfortunately, this is the second time we have experienced a similar issue, and it has involved two different servers on separate visits. The food itself is enjoyable, which is why we continue to return, but we hope the restaurant can place greater emphasis on customer service and hospitality. I ordered barbecued beef lo mein. The barbecued beef was tough like cardboard and tasteless. It also tasted really old and not fresh. There was a ton of noodles piled on top of my plate but only one or two onions or mushrooms. I would never go back there again and the service is not great either. I always wanted to try it, but I don't understand how they can stay in business when their food is so tasteless. My partner ordered barbecued beef and peapods, and he was not satisfied with the beef either. They need to up their game and get fresh meat! read more

Food is good and the waitresses are super nice however the lady that brings tea and water is super rude if asked to get forks or something other than water and tea. She'll scream and yell in mandarin at you. I went on a Sunday evening and there were 5 tables total so they weren't even super busy. The food was good, but the service was awful. One thing to be aware of: they automatically added an 18% tip regardless of the quality of service, without giving us a chance to choose the amount ourselves. I found that pretty unprofessional, especially since it wasn't clearly communicated and felt like they were deciding how much to take without our input. Just be aware before you go--check your bill carefully, because they may automatically add gratuity and assume you won't notice. read more

My mom & I stopped in right at 4:30 when they reopen for dinner. There was 1 table in the entire restaurant seated (asian family). There was no sign saying "wait to be seated" or "seat yourself" so we waited by the podium to be greeted. There was a white man seated by the door entrance, waiting for a to go order maybe. We stood by the podium and watched several employees look directly at us from the back of the restaurant (even the men in the kitchen cooking) and ignore us. I mean not one person came to the front of the restaurant while we were standing there. Just stared and carried on. There were 4 women that looked to be servers that came out of the kitchen and seen us at the podium and kept going back to whatever they were doing. you can see in the pic there's a woman folding napkins as we waited. after 4-5 min we walked out because you could almost feel how unwelcome there we were. In 2026??? During Ice raids??? Where many immigrant/minority businesses are struggling.. this is not only my first impression of this place but ALSO wtf?! This is a form of racism & terrible customer service. I get places have language barriers but they have signs for everything else so really no excuses why many of the staff treated us that way. I'm writing this review after hearing directly from a close friend and fellow POC about her experience at Grand Szechuan. She and her mother were refused service outright. The staff wouldn't acknowledge them, would not seat them, and offered zero explanation, while others were being helped. Being ignored and denied a table like this is unacceptable, period. I've eaten here before and the food is mediocre at best, but that's irrelevant now. Racist and discriminatory behavior deserves to be called out, especially in 2026. I will not return to this restaurant and I strongly recommend others avoid this place as well. Despicable behavior in this big old age. read more

I've been to Grand Szechaun at least a dozen times over the last year and I'm not really sure how to review all the times I've been there in one post. But I've dined-in, ordered take-out, and have also done a catering order for 40 people and this place always delivers every single time. Service is solid as expected. The outside of the place is unassuming. But that doesn't really matter, because the food was delicious. There's a large amount of seating available. The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but I have a few favorites that I always order and then I try to add one or two new dishes to try as well. Anyway, a list of my favorite dishes below: Quick fried crispy fish fillet: this is the GOATed dish. The fish it meaty, incredibly crispy, and the black beans on top add this super nice saltiness when eaten together with the rice, it's perfect. Orange chicken: this isn't your typical orange chicken like Panda Express. This stuff is flavorful, a bit sweet and more caramelly than orange juicy. I will admit sometimes though that it can be a bit battery, but that's seldom. Szechuan green beans: yum. salty, tender. The perfect side veggie to make me think I'm eating healthy. Achoy: this veggie tastes clean but it's also so flavorful. My favorite veggie here by far. The pieces are a little long so it can be difficult to eat sometimes with a spoon. Cumin beef: tender, spicy, and salty. flavorful and always delivers. Salt and pepper squid: this used to be one of my favorites, but over the last 2 years it's become more of "onions with squid" rather than "squid with onions". Nonetheless, the squid is crispy and salty, and pairs very well with rice. Beef chow fun: a classic. nice soy flavor and tender chewy flat rice noodles. I do like Peking Garden's beef chow fun more but this is pretty good too. During lunch, they also have a sliced noodle that I usually get with minced pork sauce. It's a large portion and the noodles are seasoned with a spicy oil and minced pork. The noodles are thick and chewy but melt in your mouth, and the flavor is just filled with umami. Ordered: - Mapo Tofu (4/5): Creamy, oily, and spicy. - String Beans (5/5): Cooked with right amount of oil and flavor - Spicy Chicken (5/5): Wok-Hei gave the chicken a nice char and blended well with the chilli - Eggplant (3.5/5) - Beef Chow Fun (3.5/5). I used to be a regular at Grand Szechuan but hadn't been back for several years because it isn't in my usual orbit and because my Chinese colleague with whom I used to go moved out of town. However I was running an errand nearby with my wife and we decided to drop in for lunch and I am glad we did. The menu seems authentically Chinese not Panda Express. There are many unusual dishes. I remembered the Dan Dan noddles from previous visits and they were as good as I remember. They have a nice luncheon special which consists of a small bowl of egg drop soup (as good as I have ever had), a nice crunchy egg roll, a small salad, steamed or fried rice, and a wide choice of main dishes. I had the pork scallion and my wife had the sesame tofu both of which were excellent. Their menu is very extensive and I would love to try everything. Service was unobtrusive and efficient. They boxed up our left overs for us as portions are large. The decor consists of a number of tables surrounded by booths and the noise level is restrained as is light level. Did another takeout order! Egg rolls: small but good Scallion pancakes: very crispy. My husband loved them, I didn't care for them. Kung pao chicken: 10/10, will definitely order again! My husband loved it too. Szechuan green beans: 10/10, never skip Peking shredded pork: it was okay- flavor fell a little flat. We added a bit of black vinegar and that helped. My husband prefers it slightly crispier. Wouldn't get again. Beef with pickled peppers: I have had this other places (which doesn't mean I can speak to how authentic something is!) and it's normally my favorite. I found the texture and flavor here wasn't what I was hoping for - same for the pickled veg. The beef in this dish was very soft and I don't know for sure which parts of the dish were pickled peppers, but the beef/pickled pepper didn't bring the dynamic flavor profile I normally love and look for in this dish. read more

One of the waitresses was rude and kinda racist. She was smiling at every table that's not an Asian face and tending to their every need, while we had to get our own napkins and stuff. Interestingly she's Asian herself and she has some sort of problem with other Asians apparently. She's the one with the short hair, dead-eyes and the 'Im finding myself' energy. Other waitresses were nice and came to refill our water when they noticed that our table was not tended to even once besides taking the order by that specific waitress. I have visited this place on and off over the last couple of years. All of my friends think this waitress is going through some sort of mid-life crisis and takes it out on us. Would not visit again. Have been hearing good things about this place and the place we were planning to go to Crystal Garden was closed on Mother's Day and so we traveled to Bloomington for some Chinese food. We got seated right away and was glad that the host let us switch to a bigger round table with a lazy susan for ease of sharing our entrees with each other without having the pass the dishes around. Service was prompt and food came out fairly quickly. It was quiet and not very busy but the restaurant is not very big and so it was cozy with lighting not super bright. The food was tasty and has a good spicy flavor for the different regions that the dishes represented. I enjoyed the Chengdu grilled squid and the hollow vegetables stir fried in garlic sauce very much. Our server was super nice and brought out extra soups and salads for us. Pricing was reasonable. Wish that I could have had other dishes on the menu but will have to come back to try them later. Definitely recommend coming with large group to order for a family style meal. read more

I was honored to join some of Minneapolis's top tech minds at Grand Szechuan for a business lunch. The organizer promised the perfect spot, and Lord, was he right. Nothing brings data scientists, AI nerds, and tech leaders together like sharing fiery Szechuan dishes. Between debating neural networks and scaling strategies, we passed around the hot and sour soup that's become my obsession. It's rich as Tennessee soil and complex as a heartbreak ballad. I dream about that soup. The lunch special's a hell of a deal. We got to know each other over those delicious Szechuan specialties, and the service flowed like elegant code, efficient without interrupting our conversations. We really like this place. We've been there quite a few times. Sometimes we order an entree that doesn't appeal to us (too salty). Most other entrees we simply love. This place was great!! Such an amazing deal!! I came with one other person on a Saturday Afternoon for Lunch. We both got the lunch special. The lunch special comes with a generous size salad, a bowl of hot and sour soup, egg roll and an entrée. The salad was delicious, perfect size not too big not too small. The dressing was my favorite part. I had a hint of sweetness, and the lettuce was crunchy and great. The hot and sour soup was amazing. So many flavors just bursting into my mouth not extremely hot, but my mouth was tingling. The broth is my favorite part, bursting with flavor, but the big pieces of tofu and different little things were very, very nice and interesting. The egg roll was also crispy and yummy with that bright red sweet-and-sour sauce. For my entrée, I got hot orange chicken. The orange chicken was so good not necessarily very hot, but I think how they do it as they put peppers into it and some pieces have more peppers than others. The chicken was great though so saucy and the portions were extremely huge. I got fried rice with mine and it was pretty good. Nothing super special, but still tasted great. My friend got the Kung pow tofu, which was super crispy on the outside and had a great texture on the inside. Had a hint of spice as well and was very great overall. My lunch special with the soup, salad, orange chicken, fried rice, and egg roll was about 11$. Insane. Incredibly insane. For the giant portions they gave us and the quality of the food. No better prices could be seen elsewhere. My friends with the soup, salad, egg roll, and Kung pow tofu was about 9$. The service was great, not long wait times and the waiters were very friendly with my indecisive picking. The ambience of the restaurant is very interesting. Walls are very pretty and space is big and luxurious. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for those prices great food, and friendly service. Service is okay, typical old school Chinese restaurant service or what you'd expect at your family's house. Sometimes it's hard to find your water or get water refills. Most in my party has adhd so we usually order too many dishes and the waiter had commented along the lines of that's a lot of food when taking our order. We know that. Don't go if you want good service, go if you want good food. My favorites are the Szechuan tofu and Szechuan fries. We ordered the Chung King Chili Chicken (aggressively spiced and a bit dry), Vermicelli with Spicy Minced Pork (soupier than expected), Cumin Lamb (good flavor, a bit dry), Fish Fillet & Tofu in Szechuan Chili Broth (very spicy), Szechuan Green Beans (well-seasoned), and Shredded Potato & Green Peppers (sautéed perfectly). The quality went down the hill. I got their soup the meat was non edible the cheapest chewy pieces maybe like 5 tiny pieces with maybe like 3 tiny pieces of cabbage. I am 100% in love with this place. Thanks, Kedar, for the recommendation! The flavors they're serving up are seriously exquisite. Lo Mein - At the waitress's suggestion, I ordered Veggie Lo Mein. The flavor was amazing. I was, however, surprised that it didn't come with any extra veggies. The onions, snap peas, and mushrooms (which I omitted) are standard. I was expecting the veggie to add broccoli and carrots, at least. Nonetheless, we had a LOT of food on the table, so it wasn't an issue. In the future, I'll clarify and ask to add broccoli. Kung Pao Tofu - Ordered extra spicy. Loved the flavor. The tofu was fried and perfectly firm. I ended up mixing the kung pao tofu with the lo mein, instead of the rice. Excellence! I will order this combination every time. Szechuan Green Beans - Delicious! Plenty of sautéed garlic along with the other seasonings. Again, flavor is the keyword at this joint. All of the aforementioned entree portions are huge! If I wasn't on a foodie mission, this could've easily lasted for 3 extra meals. Great value! Szechuan Potato Fries - Crispy and deliciously spiced. These may be my new favorite fries. 10/10 will order again. Vegetable Egg Rolls - They're ok. I've had better; I've had worse. Decent sized rolls (not tiny). I also tried my fellow vegans' peanuts and diced tofu and chili sauce (great flavor. We've been meaning to check this place out at the recommendation of an old coworker and finally made our way and had a good time! I'll start by saying - we felt like we got our money's worth and were very happy with the quality of the food that we ordered. Like others have said, the service is a bit lacking and part of that is due to the language barrier. While it wasn't the best service I've ever had, it also wasn't the worst and I would visit here again if we found ourselves in the neighborhood. However, these places are a dime a dozen in the suburbs so I'm not sure that we will make our way back when we have perfectly good options in our suburb. We were there for a Friday night dinner and only waited a few minutes to get sat, place was very busy which we hoped was a good sign of things to come! Our server initially was very attentive but once we had put in our orders it seemed as though she did not care to check on us. It was enough that we were able to keep our drinks full, but not in any other respect. We ended up waiting a bit to leave as she hadn't returned to check on to-go containers (which we did want since these portions are HUGE!) and to give us the check for us to pay. Again, it clearly wasn't the worst service we've ever had but it certainly wasn't the best. I am a MAJOR fan of Sichuan Chinese food. I could eat it every day, I seek it out when I travel, and I cook it at home regularly. But when I moved to Minnesota, I felt like there were very few authentic Sichuan Chinese restaurants in town that were to my standards. Grand Szechuan is the exception. Eating in or taking out, you can't go wrong. The inside is pretty large and has classic Chinese restaurant decor. Service is great and your food comes out super fast. It's so hard to pick the best foods here because I rarely encounter something I dislike: their mapo tofu is EXCEPTIONAL. Seriously amazing depth of flavor and a wonderful texture. Love their cool noodle and Dan Dan noodle dishes, as well as their chengdu wontons, shredded pork with Peking sauce, & the beef with Napa cabbage. Also can't go wrong with a classic - Kung pao chicken! Do yourself a favor and order from the Sichuan menu and not the American menu. Its their specialty and you won't regret it! read more

Best Chinese food in MN hands down. This place isn't even in the same league as the rest of the Chinese places in MN. Very authentic and great tasting food. Some of my favorites are the Fish in Chili Sauce and Chung King chicken. Edit: WATCH OUT FOR WAITERS ADDING A TIP. We were group of 5 and the waiter added a tip on our bill. I should have looked closer to the bill before giving my credit card, but when the receipt for the credit card came back, I noticed the bill seemed higher. I asked the waiter for the original bill, which was removed from the final credit card for signing, he happened to have it in his pocket. We went to grand Szechuan a little late, and probably an hour or two before closing, so there were a couple of small miscommunication errors such as wrong ordered dishes, no bowls, no utensils, no tea cups, etc. The food was a little off, so I am assuming they were in cleanup mode, instead of a cooking mode. No fault to them. Here are the memorable dishes, good or bad. Szechuan green beans: fantastic taste with a punch of crispness. 5/5 Beef szechwan: I think the beef was undercooked, because it tasted spongy.
