Over a decade ago, this used to be the spot! Flash forward to 2026 and it was mediocre at best. I dined in around 2 pm on a Sunday when MN was having poor air quality as I knew I'd be the only one in there and was craving intimacy. I certainly was the only one there. Perfect, right? Wrong. It took forever to acknowledge that I was waiting for a table even though every seat was open and my service was slow. I made sure to order appetizers, the drink, and full meal together once I realized I was in for a slow serve. The cream cheese wontons were my favorite of all the food. The steamed pork buns were just okay and left a weird after taste that I didn't enjoy. Lastly, the sesame chicken had great portion control and wasn't soaked in sauce yet some of the chicken pieces were questionable mixed with both dark and light meat. The cherry on top was that there were 15 flying tiny bugs similar to fleas that would swarm my food. This made me question the hygiene of the entire spot. All of this was such a turnoff to me. The menu is a glorious maze of delicious decisions: dumplings, noodles, stir-fries, Lo Mein ... I needed a strategy and a snack halfway through just to finish reading it. The dumplings? The food sometimes taste a bit too strong because of the spices they put into the food but perhaps that's the most traditional way and I just can't handle it much myself. We have always love The Tea House. We ordered from Door Dash which was fine and timely. The food however was the disappointment . The chicken wings were dry and over cooked. The Moo Shoo pork totally different flavor, not sure why . The fried tofu with broccoli , overcooked. We've gotten takeout many times but this was awful! It's also very expensive. Came here on a Friday night after work. A table of 3 and another table of 1. Waited five minutes to be seated and after 20 minutes all I had was a glass of water. The waitress disappeared into the kitchen took three other take-out orders in that time and never asked me if I wanted to order anything. Can't complain or recommend the service here because there was none. The waitress did notice that I had stood up to leave but didn't say anything after staring at me, watching me walk out. I can't write a bad review because I didn't get a chance to try anything. Half the dining room is closed off and there is one cook. Dim sum is one of my favorite things to do! Just love it! While Dim Sum is usually offered on the weekends, St Paul Tea House has some Dim Sum items on their daily menu. This must be a fairly recent update as I remember visiting some years back and this was not an option. We actually returned to St Paul Tea House to pick up a specific meal for some friends that were in town visiting. They had complained about the Chinese food they had the other night and that they prefer spicy food. I had previously had the Chong King Chicken from St Paul Tea house and remembered that while it was tasty, it was plenty spicy. While we were in the process of ordering from their website, we noticed the Dim Sum items. Immediately excited I ordered a couple of my favorite items. Shu mai and Crystal Shrimp dumplings. Then as I sometimes do, I went a bit overboard. I decided to order their Honey Garlic Tenderloin, Beef Flat Noodle and a couple of Steamed Buns. The Shu mai were large and just as I remembered. Same with the Crystal Shrimp. They didn't last long. The Beef Flat Noodle is similar to Chow Fun but the noodles seemed to be not as long or flat. Still, it was tasty. The Steamed Buns were also as I remembered from growing up. Soft and pilllowy and filled with savory pork although sometimes they can be filled with BBQ Pork. Bonus is the steamed buns come in a special bag with reheating instructions. The big winner was the Honey Garlic Tenderloin which was sliced thin, tender and savory. Our friends enjoyed their Chong King which had the spice they were looking for. There are several Tea House locations around the metro area. We'll certainly be back again. read more

I went to the Tea House for lunch with co-workers on a Tuesday at noon. I didn't have the best experience. To start, I ordered the sweet and sour chicken lunch special. It comes with a smaller portion of the sweet and sour chicken and side of white rice, plus an egg roll and a bowl of soup. I ordered the egg drop soup and it was just ok. When the entrees came out, our server informed me that they accidentally made mine as a dinner portion instead of lunch portion so he didn't give me an egg roll. I was pretty disappointed because I was looking forward to the egg roll and definitely did not want or need the dinner portion. When I questioned it again to our server, he said again he wouldn't be bringing out an egg roll because they gave me a dinner portion, so I just left it alone. Also, the sweet and sour chicken wasn't anything special. The sauce was good but the dish definitely needed more of it. However, at this point I was too afraid to ask, as our server made me feel like I was already too much of a bother. My co-workers weren't super impressed with their meals, either. One co-worker was excited to come here but said he'd only ever been to the University location, and this location does not compare. Extraordinarily disappointing. The Hot and Sour Soup should be called a broth because it contained virtually no ingredients--a couple of tofu bits a couple of mushroom shards and that's about it. Moving on to the chicken wings...They were of satisfactory size but the batter was flavorless and rather soggy. The Twin Cites metro has a large number of excellent Szechuan restaurants, and Tea House in St. Paul is at the bottom of the list. That said, it's perfectly fine, but if you want better quality, go to places like Grand Szechuan in Bloomington, Szechuan in Roseville or even the other Tea House in Minneapolis. We got the vegetarian egg rolls ($1.75 each) but these had a cream/mushy filling that was off-putting. The Szechuan scallion pancake ($3.50) was too dough and thick with zero flavor. The vegetarian dumplings ($6) fare a bit better, with a nice interior filling, but excessively doughy wrapper. The bamboo tips in spicy sauce ($7) weren't spicy and had too much vinegar. The Szechuan dan dan noodle ($5.50) was forgettable without enough flavor but at least it's meat-free by default. The vegetarian bun ($4 for two) was pretty good, though. We also liked the mapo tofu ($10) which is made without meat by default. Similarly, the kung pao tofu ($10) had a nice savory flavor and range of textures, though the dish doesn't travel well due to the deep fried tofu. The broccoli in garlic sauce ($10) had a gloopy sauce and the broccoli seemed old or under-cooked (or both). The sauteed pea shoots ($13) tasted okay, but this also seemed to suffer from just slightly old greens. All told, Tea House settles out as okay, but not great. Grand Szechuan in Bloomington is a better bet. read more

Tea House was a place my coworker recommended we try out. There apparently is another location in Minneapolis, but since I live closer here, I decided to try this one out. Lil Yang and I came here once Sunday, and we ordered Dumplings, both Veggie and Pork. Along with Chow Fun, which is like stir fry noodles. I know Lil Yang Enjoyed the Chow Fun, and I think she liked the dumplings. I liked the dumplings, however the wrap was a little thick for my taste. I really wanted to try them Steamed, however out of habit, I said Fried. So that was definitely my fault. I did think they were tasty, and I would definitely get the veggie ones again. Overall, I would come here again if I was in the mood for some Dumplings or Chow Fun, I would also try other entrees, however I don't always crave this, so it would be once in a while. read more

I was hestitant to come to Tea House at first because I didn't have the best experience at the U of M location... Long story. However, I decided to give this one another chance. I loved the Dan Dan noodles... So good and different. Cheap appetizer too and good to share between 2-3 people. You could make it a idea dish or even your main meal if you wanted something smaller. We got the scallion pancakes too. I wish there were more scallions inside the pancakes but they were fried well. I didn't try the juicy buns (soup dumplings), but my boyfriend and friend loved them. They had sufficient soup coming out of them and were fresh and hot. We also shared the fried rice. It was delicious and had lots of flavor. It definitely tasted even better with hot oil. Alright ranting about other reviews aside, Tea House serves up authentic Szechuan cuisine, just like her sister restaurants in Golden Valley and in Dinkytown by the same name. This location does attract a lot more Asians, since it's in St. Paul! Favorites here are Dan Dan Noodle, Soup Dumplings, Szechuan Dumplings, Pepper Tendon, Boiled Fish in Red Sauce, and their Szechuan Beef Noodle Soup. Tea House and Little Szechuan (which was opened by a defected Tea House chef) are the standard bearers of this cuisine in this town. I'll quickly add Szechuan in Toseville that has kicked it up several notches recently. Complaining about Tea House's food just shows a person's ignorance. That's how I feel about that. Well perhaps they're ordering the wrong stuff...So while someone actually from the Szechuan province maybe able to speak to how they might improve because they have actual culinary experience with high-line Szechuan, I however will keep my Southern Chinese/Hong Konger mouth shut, and simply say thank you for being here in MN so I can bring my family here instead of taking a 24 hr plane ride. The menu online is completely different at the restaurant. Lies! Many of the dishes I was excited for, like lamb noodles, was no where to be found. In fact there was like one lamb dish, not the multiple dishes found online. I was soooo sad. Maybe they recently updated their restaurant menu, but seems like a basic Chinese restaurant now...and there's like zero tea selections. What? It's quite a dark restaurant, but I love the authentic feel of the wall panels/Chinese décor. Our server was your typical Asian server, not friendly and has zero concern for it, but he was efficient. I met a friend for lunch, we ordered the Shanghai scallion pancakes, Szechuan dumplings, and Xiao long buns. We also had a cold dish with shredded chicken that was in a light peanut sauce, it was tasty. I would have liked to keep eating this chicken dish, but it had a short black hair in it, so it went back. Don't get the pancakes, it was like a thick deep fried donut that was fried a little too long, and had no flavor. I have ordered from tea house many years. It's not your regular Americanized Chinese restaurant. I think it's the only authentic Chinese restaurant in east metro. When the dish say it's spicy it's spicy.. they don't ask for a spice level which speaks for the authentic spiciness of the dish. One of our favorite go to for authentic tasting Chinese food. Love love their double cooked pork. We always cater this dish because it's unlike any other double cooked pork in the metro. Perfect blend of jalapeño and pork belly! Spicy, and delicious. Their fried rice is flavorful. Not the sticky type of fried rice. The rice is fluffy, and has you wanting to eat more and more. The chicken wings are a hit or miss here imo. Sometimes they come out perfect fried, crispy. And other times they come out overly fried where it's difficult to chew and eat because the batter has been overly fried. Still good tho. I've been coming here for good Chinese food since the early 2004. The restaurant can be very busy during peak hours, lunch dinner. I went to the Teahouse after getting a recommendation from my coworker. The layout and decoration of the resturant is good. Food is above average if you pick the right item. One of the dish we got was overly flowing with oil so it makes hard to eat. The price is high compared to other places and they charge a 18% tip regardless of the party size. My recent trip to the Teahouse was even worse than before. The service was slow and the restaurant start to CHARGE FOR TEA AND RICE. I have never heard of Chinese restaurant charges extra for rice. Even THOUGH the teahouse is close to where I live, I will be going to the Little Szechuan from now on. The food there is better in quality and cost less too. read more

They live up to every ounce of hype they've received. Try them. After the juicy buns comes the main course and although the juicy buns steal the show everything else I've tried has not disappointed. The hunan chicken is really tasty and full of veggies if you're looking for those. Otherwise if you have someone to share with or are incredibly hungry the crispy whole fish is outstanding and probably one of my favorite dishes ever. Their menu is gigantic so you won't have a problem finding something, it may take a while to decide though. Not mentioning the great service would be wrong. I've always had incredibly polite and friendly service. Plus, they're always able to answer questions about anything on the menu as well. Tea House remains one of the better options for Szechuan-style Chinese on the East side, but lately I have felt that I keep leaving here slightly more disappointed than satisfied each time. The dan dan noodles, hot & sour soup and beef noodle soup remain quite good, but I've found the pickled pork soup and kung pao shrimp pretty mediocre at best on recent visits. Adding to the somewhat inconsistent food has been very slow service; though in the servers' defense they do appear to be pretty minimally staffed for how busy it gets. That said, don't expect service with a smile or anything close - effeciency is the name of the game here. Don't get me wrong, I'll keep stopping by since I work nearby, but I'll be more motivated to take a longer lunch and drive to Little Szechuan more often in the future when jonesing for quality Szechuan over the noon hour. read more
