If you're craving some good Chinese food you can count on - come to Cheng's! They have a free parking lot, as they're located in a shopping complex. I believe they had to go through a complete or mega reconstruction after the civil unrest. It's great to see a small, locally owned business stay in the community and come back from that! I went for lunch during the week and it was pretty busy! There's a few tables for dine in but I chose to get takeout. I ordered the Sesame Chicken Lunch Special & House Special Egg Foo Young. It was a very reasonable price and seriously lasted me like 3 or 4 meals! The Sesame Chicken Lunch Special was so good! Perfect amount of crunch and flavor. The rice was a classic fried rice, yum! My family's been coming to this place since I was a kid, and I know for sure my parents have gotten the chicken wings with fried rice here since before I was born. Unfortunately, it was not spicy at aII. Super quality white meat with MASSIVE portions. I was forced to use quite a bit of siracha and hot chili garlic sauce on it, but it was certainly enough food to stretch into two meals. Egg roII was huge and chicken fried rice was quite Legit. Our chow mein was inedible - droopy, overcooked little pieces of cabbage, tough little strips of pork, and lots of glop, all of it as bland as bland can be. The Singapore Mei Fun - which Eater singled out for praise - had an overpowering smell and taste of cheap, raw curry powder, with a few tiny morsels of shrimp etc. The beef with broccoli was the only thing that reached the normal standard of average, American Chinese fare - the beef was nice and tender and the broccoli was good and didn't taste like frozen. My husband turned me on to this restaurant, as he has been eating here for years. Neatly nestled into a small space in a strip mall on 30th and Nicollet Avenue between a bakery and Variety Beauty Supply, it's unassuming, but has some good go-to items. I usually order either a combination or a la carte of these items: steamed dumplings, shrimp with broccoli, house special fried rice, and sesame chicken. Their sesame chicken is the best I've ever had--sweet, savory, tender, and filling. I opt out of eating the rice that comes with it because I don't need it. If you've never eaten from Cheng's before, you can't go wrong with the sesame chicken. I highly recommend it! My husband also orders wings from here occasionally, which he tells me are very good. Well-known tip is that they accept cash only, so grab some cash from your stash and dine but don't dash! ;) read more

Both times the Cream Cheese Wonton's seemed under cooked, since I ordered delivery just popped them in the toaster oven to crisp them up a bit more. Pork fried rice came with a couple of pieces of shrimp and chicken mixed in at the top too, which is fine for me but if anyone has allergies to anything they should know they're preparing it all in one pan. Delivery service is terrible, both times the same driver won't even come to your door even on a clear summer night. He calls and tries to make you go down to the street corner so he doesn't have to bother with getting out of his car or parking, which is ample in my neighborhood. Ridiculous. read more

I have kind of a mixed review for Cheng's Garden. My wife wasn't feeling great but thought she might like some fried rice. Me - with time to kill - thought I'd google "best fried rice in Minneapolis." One site mentioned Cheng's Garden, so I figured we'd give them a try. We had it delivered. First off, you probably think it's odd to google "best fried rice." I did it on a lark. I'm pretty much of the opinion that fried rice is fried rice. As I said, my wife wasn't feeling great, so we got some fried rice. Also, some egg foo young to share. Egg foo young is one of those dishes where I wonder if there ever was something similar in China. It is kind of nostalgic for us. Something our parents would have ordered. I also ordered their "house special" General Tso's Chicken and an order of egg rolls. There was definitely going to be some leftovers, but nothing wrong with that for Chinese food. Also, we weren't being very adventurous from a culinary perspective. As it turns out, I'm sticking with my opinion on fried rice. Not a lot of difference from one place to another. The egg rolls were good - they didn't knock me out, but I wasn't disappointed. I thought the egg foo young was actually pretty good. What surprised me (in a good way) was the General Tso's Chicken. I was assuming it would be the typical sweet dish, but they have it on their menu listed as a spicy dish. When you order, you specify mild, medium or spicy. I ordered it spicy, figuring how hot could it be? I was pleasantly surprised with the flavor. It was sweet but they did add some heat. My biggest disappointment was the delivery. We live in a condo, so a good delivery brings it to our unit. They ring us from the lobby, and we buzz them in. I even put this on my online order instructions. I tend to be disappointed when they make me come down the lobby to pick it up. This was at even a lower level. I had to leave the building and go out to his car to pick it up. Keep in mind this is the restaurant's own delivery, not GrubHub who also seems to deliver for this restaurant. So the mixed part of this review is that the fried rice and egg rolls were okay, egg foo young was good, General Tso's Chicken was very good, and delivery service was terrible. At the time of writing this, there is only 1 review for this place at 1 star. I'm appalled. I've gone here a few times now and it's very, very good, especially given the price. For $6.95-7.35 (depending on the entree), you get a sizable amount of whatever entree you get, pork or chicken fried rice, and an eggroll. I'm a cow of an eater and it easily stretches into two satisfying meals. For $7. C'mon. The General Tso's is among the best I've ever had. The chicken is crispy and the sauce is very flavorful. Most of the time I find this kind of sauce to be overwhelmingly soy/salty tasting and not much else, but this one was very flavorful and not salty in an unpalatable manner. The fried rice is also really quite good - it's not just simply soy sauce mixed with rice like so many fried rice dishes are. Lots of flavor there. I can't believe someone compared it to mop water - they either have the most ridiculous standards for fried rice, or they went on a bad day. The egg roll was very fresh, crispy, and quite good. A little on the small side, but the portion size of the main meal is so large that it is hardly worth mentioning. I should also point out that this place is cash only, no cards. All in all, some of the better takeout chinese that I've had in a while, and all for about $7/two meals. Very, very worth it, and it just became my regular place for takeout. read more

I'm a fan! I was skeptical when I first saw the paper menu left at my apartment doorstep, but was starving, craving Asian (Chinese to be specific), and didn't want to think. So I called them up, was happy to hear that I could communicate in Chinese since I didn't know the english equivalent of what I was looking for. They have a lady (who speaks Chinese) and a guy who speaks English, although they both speak English. I've ordered from this place a couple times now, all for delivery, so I can't vouch for the dine-in experience. But I've ordered the steamed dumplings (8 big dumplings in an order for $5.50) both times, both times they were very good. If you're looking for a more tender, thin skin, this is not that type of dumpling. This restaurant has the thick-skinned, possibly hand-made kind. But the meat wrapped inside is very tasty, juicy, and flavorful, as is the garlicky soy sauce that they give it to you to eat with. I've also ordered the Hunan Chicken ($8.25) and the Chicken with Garlic Sauce ($8.25). If you don't get the dinner special combo, it comes with rice and the quantity of food is pretty hefty. You certainly cannot finish one in a sitting - I barely look like I've made a dent. I like the Chicken with Garlic Sauce more - I don't know how to describe it, but the flavor is a sweet spicy and pairs perfectly with white rice. The Hunan Chicken (black bean sauce?) is still good, has some kick to it. I also ordered the Mixed Chinese Vegetable ($6.95) which has a huge variety of veggies in it (broccoli, bamboo shoots, chestnuts, carrots) was YUM. Yes, the sauce they serve here is going to be a little high on the corn starch, but honestly it makes sure that all the ingredients are coated with the sauce. I'm definitely going to order more from this place - it's a reliable, quick delivery place. Both times I received my order within 15 minutes of placing it. BUT the lady that answers the phone and takes orders speaks very poor English and UPCHARGES you on your order. A meal that should have been around $15 came out to be $19.
