Friendly staff, cheap food in price and quality. The "decor" is a 1970s time capsule. Terrible coffee. Food is typical Sysco foods frozen junk prepared hours in advance. What really got me was the half slice of cheap American cheese on my breakfast sandwich. If a restaurant can't afford to give their customers a whole slice of cheap cheese or their customers can't tolerate an additional$.010 to cover the expense, that is a sure sign they will be out of business in the near future. When I was growing up in Dallas, we had many Grandy's locations. Even after I moved to Houston back in 1999, there were some Grandy's locations here. All of the ones in Houston have closed, and the nearest one to me is in Victoria. I had to travel to Victoria and decided to eat at Grandy's there to see if it was as good as I remembered from childhood. My favorite meal there was there Country Fried Steak, with fried okra and coleslaw, so that's what I ordered. The rolls were a tad burned and also a bit dry. (Stale?) I was sad about this, as Grandy's used to have the best rolls you could get anywhere - with the possible exception of the now-defunct Black-Eyed Pea. The Country Fried Steak was similar to what I remembered, though it tasted like it was cooked in slightly burned grease. Perhaps the deep-fryers needed to be cleaned and have the oil replaced. No complaints about the okra - it was great! The coleslaw was good. One thing that was missing from the menu was chicken livers. I used to get them regularly many years ago, but they were not on the marquis, so I guess - like many other chicken restaurants - they quit selling them. Overall, I don't think it was as good as it used to be, though it could be that I'm more discerning now. It is fast food, so that should be taken into account. read more

Wanted to experience Grandy's of old. Bad, sad mistake.I got there for the lunch rush at 11:30 am and it was all cold AND old! The gravy on the taters was watery and still tasted burnt. Like it was old and they kept adding water trying to stretch it out rather than make a fresh batch. The okra was even older and colder. No crunch and no flavor. The chicken itself tasted like a reheat from days ago but how can that be? Cause straight from the heat lamps it was barely room temp. Not even a little crunchy,an off flavor and and even the texture was very off putting. Couldn't even eat it all and had the feeling I made a big mistake but hoped for the best but got the worst. I went on a Tues and immediately realized I made a HUGE mistake. It's Sunday now and I'm just starting to feel normal again.Houston to Victoria for what can only be described as food poisoning and I couldn't even enjoy the taste if it. I don't know what to say. It's Grandy's. It's fine. The staff are always upbeat and friendly. You get vegetables as a side which is healthier than most fast food drive thru type restaurants. I like the fish they offer during lent. read more

I wish we still had a Grandys in Corpus Christi so every time I make it to Victoria, I make sure I stop in. The rolls are the best thing, I (of course) got 2 dozen to go. I know for a fact, I'm not the only one that does this lol. It's a killer that its not open on Sundays too. Service was always very friendly and food was served with a smile. I read the reviews here before I came, I had a low expectation because most of the reviews were bad. But my brother in law said it was a good place to check out. Upon arriving I see what they mean by "old style" this is the theme, "home cooked old school style" should have been the wording. The food was great, I especially loved the okra. I went around 7pm and everything was fresh. Everything tasted great to me. I am not originally from Victoria and have never ate this chain of restaurant. Overall I say it's great and would come again. It is a "fast food" type of establishment, you walk up to counter and order your food. read more

For anyone under the impression that this is a decent diner for breakfast based on the raving reviews let me clear something up. This is fastfood. You order at a counter and take your tray to your seat. Nothing is made to order but is sitting under a hot lamp. The eggs have the texture of powdered or some other kind of processed crap and the breakfast platter is mostly carbs. Its about on par with Army field "A" rations. If you want a decent diner breakfast, you're better off going to a Denny's. I cant believe I just said that. And why isn't there a Waffle House around here? The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars is that at least its really ***ing cheap. At least I dont feel too bad about chucking $8 in the trash. Even the coffee sucks. Go to McDonald's! If you just really prefer your sh**y fastfood breakfast southern style, with microwaved chicken fried steak and some packaged biscuits and gravy, then have at it. read more

My husband had the Breakfast Feast. He shared one of his plain biscuits with me. It was pretty good as was the sausage patty. His eggs were also a strange consistency and watery. $14.00 wasted. This is the nastiest food I have ever had. Before yesterday, I had never eaten at a Grandy's before but the group I was with was extremely excited. They remembered when we had a location in Corpus Christi and stated that they make a point of trying to stop here when passing through Victoria. When we first arrived, I was hit with an odd smell. It was like a combination of old food and cleaning products. I ordered the double steak meal with mashed potatoes and okra. My meal came with 2 rolls and a drink. The okra and rolls were good. The mashed potatoes tasted and smelled like the odor I mentioned before. I assume it must have been the potatoes and not the gravy because they steaks tasted okay (it was smothered in the same gravy). I did scrape off the grave while I was eating it though. The only think I finished were the rolls. When leaving, my friend and I decided to try the cinnamon rolls to go. The cinnamon roll was so bland and came with nuts and raisins. The restaurant looks like it hasn't been updated since the 1970's. I'm still so confused how everyone was so excited to eat there and I think it was so disgusting. read more

My wife and I travel from Corpus Christi Texas to the Wharton area quite often on one of our trips we noticed that a grandys restraint was located on north Navarro. We stopped in and had a great experience. I ordered the country fried steak and my wife the baked chicken with the wild rice. one thing we talked about when we left was the absence of the baked beans that we enjoy very much.
