Little bit of wake and bake with my son and it was the perfect hole in the wall southern diner! This place may not be fancy with top shelf amenities but it was clean, and food was bangin'. We split one of the breakfast platters and ordered some French toast and the food was plenty to split. P.S. Should go without saying but don't order the fruit cup at a diner... it's tiny. Stick with the hash browns and grits FTW!

Someone in a Facebook group I'm in (Lake Norman Eats) recommended this place as THE place to get chicken fried steak. Turns out they were wrong. Or either I went to the wrong location? Granny's has several locations throughout the area, but this one seems to be much lower-rated than the others. Having never been to the others, I can't speculate. My experience was so lackluster, I doubt I'll be back to give them a second chance. The restaurant itself was larger than I expected when I went inside and seemed quite clean. The tables and booths are exactly as you'd expect in a place called Granny's, and I'm happy to say that they were practicing social distancing and COVID guidelines. I had the chicken fried steak but subbed mushroom gravy for the white gravy. For the sides, I chose macaroni and cheese and fried squash. My bread of choice was a homemade biscuit. Half of my meal was really good: the squash and the biscuit. The other half was not great. The macaroni and cheese tasted exactly like the boil in the bag variety straight from Sysco. The steak was fried pretty hard and the gravy was definitely not homemade and was a salt bomb. I'm not so sure I even LIKE chicken fried steak, to be honest, but this introduction to the dish was not making me a fan. The staff was kind and the food was cheap, so no harm no foul. If you are looking for food to fill your belly and you aren't too picky, this place might work for you.

Livermush, hash browns, scrambled eggs, gravy.

The food took a little while to come out, but if you're looking for a place to sit, relax, and socialize for a while, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Between the two of us, we've been here at least four or five times over the years, and I've also had several business lunches here. I genuinely wish I could say it's a restaurant I love and frequently recommend, because there is a lot to like about it. The building has character, the location is great, and the overall atmosphere is charming. Unfortunately, the experience itself has consistently left us underwhelmed. Every time we visit, the food is just okay--nothing particularly memorable or worth going out of your way for. The service has also been consistently slow, and on this most recent visit, that trend continued. We keep telling ourselves we won't come back, but after six to eight months we'll think, "Maybe we should give it another shot." Sadly, we usually leave feeling the same way we did the time before. What makes this especially frustrating is that the restaurant has so much potential. The setting is wonderful, and we genuinely want to like it. However, after multiple visits over several years, it feels like the food quality and service simply haven't lived up to the atmosphere. My biggest suggestion would be to focus on improving the consistency and quality of the food and to encourage the service staff to be more attentive, friendly, and proactive. A little hustle and hospitality can go a long way. At this point, there are simply too many other good dining options in the area for me to enthusiastically recommend Hickory Station. To those about to dine, I'd honestly look elsewhere.

I haven't ventured out for Sunday brunch in ages but after a trip to the peerless Park Road…read moreBookstore, I decided to give it a go. At noon on Sunday it was jammed, so I ambled in and sat at the bar with a bunch of strangers. They weren't strangers by the time I left. The ambiance is really, really welcoming. Things I loved about Mother's before I even took a bite: the friendly staff (the bartenders were affable despite the crowds!), the "get breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner anytime" menu, the extensive drinks menu and the flexibility of ordering. Example: the bartender worked with the gentleman to my left to cobble together his à la carte choices into the least expensive meal. So, so accommodating! I had trouble deciding what to order and ended up choosing something the lady to my right had ordered: Melissa's Steak Benny. I'd been craving eggs Benedict and it seemed like a solid choice. At the last moment, I swapped out the hash browns for grits, despite the hash browns looking crispy and delicious, as I'm more a grits girl. Best decision of the day. Best grits I have had in Charlotte. Hands down. Perfectly flavored with without a trace of residue from the butter or cheese it contained. So good I didn't even add my usual hot sauce! (And btw, they have an array of hot sauces available alongside the usual salt and pepper at the table.) As for the dish, I was a little dubious about the drizzle of A1 steak sauce atop the hollandaise, but boy, was I wrong. The smokiness of the steak sauce softened the richness of the hollandaise and was brilliant with the sautéed onions and mushrooms. The hanger steak was prepared (close to) medium rare as requested, and I highly recommend not going past medium because hanger steak is easy to overcook. (My neighbor's plate was delivered well done and had to be sent back, with lots of apologies from the staff; she said despite the sauce it was far too chewy.) I ended up being able to cut my steak with my fork, always a sign of the good stuff, and the English muffin was toasted enough that it didn't turn to mush at all, not even the last bite. I cleaned my plate. A note about brunch: on the weekends be patient because it's super busy, but if you show up in pajamas before noon, your meal is discounted 20%. Honestly, what more can you ask, getting rewarded by showing up in comfy clothes?!? Mother's immediately became my go-to brunch place; I don't drink much but the Bloody Mary there is calling my name. I can't wait to go back, perhaps for supper.

I started with the orzo tomato spinach soup with feta ($3.99). I wasn't sure what to expect as I get a pasta salad done similarly but I can tell you that I was highly impressed with the tomato based broth, the depth of the broth, creamy consistency of the orzo and pieces of fresh spinach. A side of crumbled feta accompanied it to toss in - and it definitely added to the flavors!!! I originally came here for the fried catfish - and it did not disappoint! Two pieces of fish, two sides (collards and broccoli cheese) and hushpuppies was $16.99. I had originally gotten the squash but I'm not a fan of breaded and fried. I absolutely enjoyed our Sunday Brunch here!!!!…read more First let me say it's an old movie they turned into a restaurant. Just love it. If you get asked if you want to sit downstairs or upstairs I would totally say upstairs. The ambiance and views up there is so nice. Certain seats you can see right down into the kitchen and other seats give a great view to a movie screen which movies are playing. Love it! The service was great. Very attentive and super friendly. Started the meal with some drinks of course, so cute the drinks named after famous movies. Got the cheesy bread, this is a must please don't go and NOT order this. I could have just ate a plate of these and been satisfied. The bread was so good and packed with oozed out cheese! I went with two what they call first plates for my meal..the meatballs with polenta and fried green tomatoes! The meatballs were good, I enjoyed the polenta, was creamy and had good flavor. The fried green tomatoes, BOMB. They were seasoned and fried perfectly. Then came with charred corn which was soooo good and topped with smoked pork belly! Soon and the plate sat in front of me you could smell the smoke, killer dish! Rest of the table had, a burger, the big short, a omelette stuffed with short ribs and topped with kimchi, and charbroiled chicken with brown rice, pesto and blistered tomatoes. Everything was very good. On top of the fried green tomatoe dish, I also loved the short rib omelette. The short ribs were so good! Sweet, smokey with Asian seasoning. Stuffed in an egg, yea can't go wrong! The restaurant is in Gastonia a little drive from Charlotte, but I would make that drive again and again, spot is that good.

Fun to see the old theater and the kids with us enjoyed looking around. The music was a little loud, but we did let the server know and they did turn it down for us. We had a group 8. The food was good, maybe a little small in portions. We almost all ordered the crab cake Benedict and the ham Benedict. We also ordered the cheesecake, the crème brûlée and the coconut cake. They were all really good, but I would note the crème brûlée had I believe tea in it? It wasn't just a traditional flavor but it was delicious! I do want to comment on experience. I was with my 8 month old son, who can't eat runny eggs. I ordered the crab cake Benedict and I asked to swap the poached egg to scrambled egg so I could share with my son. The server let me know he was going to check with the chef. He came back right before the plate was dropped off and said "The chef will not be doing that substitution for you". I acknowledge this is an abnormal substitution for eggs Benedict, but I was surprised and disappointed that the chef couldn't make this simple accommodation.

The place is spotless, inside and out, and all the workers are super friendly and helpful. Order at the counter, take a number, grab your drinks, and sit. A waitress will bring your food and bus your dishes. We've tried a bunch of things, all so delicious. Chicken and pulled pork are so juicy and tender. The baby back ribs are slightly sticky, and fall off the bone with more meat than you usually see on them. The best, IMO, is the jalapeño cheddar sausage. Not very spicy (4 yo granddaughter loves it!) but a good strong jalapeño flavor with plenty of cheese. Lots of side dishes. The best is their baked mac & cheese. Their best sauce is the Carolina White. Their Carolina Mustard is good, but a wee bit on the sweet side. Today, I tried the Loaded Bbq Baker with pulled pork (see pic). I had read that it was large, but what was served to me was humongous. They literally took the biggest potato and added a 1/2 potato onto the end. It has butter, sour cream, cheese, real crispy bacon bits and green onions, topped with pulled pork and a side of BBQ sauce of your choice. I could barely eat half. It was delicious and everything I wanted and I got to take half home for dinner tonight. My grandson had (not pictured sorry) the mac & cheese bowl topped with pulled pork. I will definitely order that next time. I love their mac and it's more of a suitable portion. Lol I do wish we lived closer so we could eat here more often. It is definitely with the drive.
