So I had the fried turkey chops, grits and scrambled eggs with cornbread. The turkey chops were absolutely delicious and seasoned just right. The grits were awesome (butter and pepper; no sugar!). The scrambled eggs were cooked to perfection, soft but done just right. The orange juice was real, just a tad sweet. My wife had a polish sausage sandwich and my daughter had a breakfast bowl. The aromas at our table were amazing! I'm getting hungry all over again as I pen my memories there! The restaurant is cozy, service is superb and very friendly. The prices hit just above $$. The Serving Spoon is billed as an urban eatery and that is the vide fo sho! Parking is limited because it's shared, but some spaces are generous in size. There are a couple of handicap stalls. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there with my wife and our daughter. Our hostess has been there over 20 years, she must've started working at the age of 5 because she seems to be in her 20s! I finally tried this spot...on Easter. But still waited about twenty minutes. It's a no for me. There were several red flags for me. But the number one problem was spending 55 dollars( before tip) for breakfast for two and it being below average. My daughter got a waffle and bacon. I've never seen her leave bacon on the plate. She is a bacon fiend. She left bacon on the plate. They give you big vats of fake syrup warmed in a plastic bottle. I thought we had moved on from diabetes high fructose poison syrup. It's a disservice to the Black community to still offer this. Know better do better. They could save lives by using real maple syrup. I'd rather pay more for syrup with nutrients. Now the real kicker.... I ordered two sides, catfish nuggets and grits. The catfish nuggets were 15.95. I ate a few. Took most of them to go. On the way home, I snack on the catfish. Get here right when it opens...and wait. You're not the only person who wants to eat here, and I'm told there's a line out the door at all hours. It is ALL about the ambiance here, big circular booths for big happy families. Fried chicken is a staple, and the wings lunch entree is a good decision, though it's all the sides that stand out. The collard greens are great - cooked just enough so they're not pulpy. Grits are good, and so is the mac and cheese. Candied yams are the best! We also got the Wednesday Oxtail special. The meat is impossibly tender, but the gravy was extremely salty and I wish there was more rice. Not a problem, though, the meat goes even better with some grits. Ordered takeout. I had the Little Spoon and opted for French toast (4 pieces), friend chicken (6 party wings), and eggs scrambled medium with cheddar cheese. I like how customizable their plates are. Eggs were cooked perfectly. French toast was fluffy, flavorful, and not dry. And that fried chicken was crispy, the batter on it had a nice crunch. The service was amazing server was nice and polite gave great recommendations. I had the catfish filet dinner special it was the truth cooked to perfection, wasn't hard, dry or over cooked. As a Inglewood/Los Angeles native, I've of course visited the Serving Spoon in the past but didn't have that good of an experience so I wasn't too amped to go back. But after hearing the changes made to the restaurant, I want to give it another try. After the back and forth with the menu, I chose the fried fish and waffle with the side of cornbread that I heard heavily bragged on and it was decent. Getting there as a wheelchsir user on public transit was part of the adventure itself: about an hour on the Metro E Line, followed by a transfer to the Metro 212 bus, and then a 25-minute roll to the restaurant. When I finally arrived, the place was packed and buzzing with energy--loud, lively, and about 98% Black, which immediately felt like home. Navigating through the crowd took a bit of maneuvering, but the restaurant itself was wheelchair accessible and the staff were patient and accommodating. The Serving Spoon met all of my expectations--and then some. The menu was incredibly inviting, and I went with the eggs, grits, and a side of greens. Everything was outstanding. The eggs were fluffy and golden, the grits were absolutely banging--no seasoning needed, though I happily added black pepper--and the greens were rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. The service matched the food: warm, friendly, and genuinely welcoming. Even with the tight space during peak hours, I never felt rushed or overlooked. Despite the long trek from Downtown LA using the Metro E Line and the 212 bus, this is a place I have to return to at least once more before I leave. This is true diner food which is my favorite and I loved it! I had The Big Spoon ($19.95) and it was worth every penny. I had the waffle (delicious and light) with sausage patties, and a side of skillet cornbread. My friend had the same breakfast with bacon and a biscuit. The portions are very hearty and you can order a Mini Spooner (half size) if you aren't that hungry. We also could not resist trying the 5 fried chicken wings ($6.25) that need their own pedestal! They were crunchy, perfectly cooked and outstanding. Coffee was very good as well. The Serving Spoon has been on my wish list of places to eat in LA for years and I finally made it! I arrived on a Friday around 11 and waited about 20 min for a seat at the counter for 1. The parking lot was packed but they have overflow parking in the Baptist church lot, which was very convenient and free. I ordered the catfish filet with mac n cheese and mashed potatoes with gravy. This meal also came with a huge slice of cornbread as a loaf, which I've never seen before. I'm from the South and have a good eye for comfort food, and this place hit the spot and checked all the boxes!! The catfish was piping hot - actually almost burned my mouth a few times so I would recommend eating the sides first. It tasted fresh and had a good flavor, but I also added some of the seasoned salt and hot sauce that was on the table. Would've loved some tartar sauce on the side but I didn't ask. The mac n cheese was probably my favorite - like liquid cheesy goodness with some spices for flavor!! The mashed potatoes tasted a lot like instant potatoes, which I like, and the brown gravy was really flavorful. The cornbread was super sweet, but with the real salted butter it was a perfect bite. I also got the lemonade which was very refreshing!! If you come here don't come in a rush, as there will probably be a wait any time of day since it's a popular spot. But once you're seated the service was pretty quick and I got the check fast since I'm sure they were eager to turn over tables.
