I work nearby and was craving a deli sandwich so I decided to give this place a try. Unfortunately the bread was dry and it didn't have a lot of meat but it did have some extra protein that wasn't requested (see photo). I have eaten here about 6 times and have tried multiple items across their menu. The steak and chicken plates are over a pound of food, pairing that with a large Gatorade comes out to 12.57$ of homemade quality food in the best way possible. The staff are very friendly and really give a vibe that makes it easy to come back as they treat you like a friend. I am very happy to return here any time, from their breakfast sandwich to lunch options this place manages to be delicious, affordable, and they love returning costumers. I can't speak on their alcohol options other than there are more options than I can count. Call ahead if you mind waiting 10 mins but if you don't mind then you can just walk right in and have a seat outside while your food is prepared. They have A good selection of chips to go with the sandwiches and also a small drink section. Let me tell you why this Italian was good- it was packed full of meat!! So much curated protein! they use provolone cheese so it's a subtle flavor. The sandwich comes with peppercinis and raw bell pepper (no tomato!). The dressing is oil based with a mix of herbs. All the flavors compliment so well! A great Italian sandwich overall. I ate the sandwich 6 hours ago and I am still stuffed! There is outdoor seating. A variety of retro sodas ( Jones soda!), beer, and hard liquids available for purchase. You can get a punch card so your 8th sandwich will be free. If you get the pretzel bun- just be aware that the bread must be toasted for health purposes. They do this for you automatically. Came here after hearing some quite positive reviews, and wasn't disappointed. This place is STOCKED with any kind of alcohol you can think of, and the deli does a good job of making a sandwich. I ordered a classic Italian on a French roll, and also had the pleasure of trying the same sandwich on a pretzel roll. If I had to do it again, I would avoid the French roll, it was a little light and thin, and compared with the pretzel roll was severely lacking in flavor. The sandwich itself was filled with flavor, and stacked with all the classic italian meats, tasty cheese and veggies...the only thing I was was missing was some tomato! About $10 for a sandwich, so its a little on the pricey side, but it does have a good portion of meat, so all in all not a bad deal! read more

The turkey is super fresh, there's just enough cranberry to give it a little sweetness, toasted gave it a nice crunch. The avocado was fresh. The sourdough bread was delicious. It all melded together nicely for a consistently delicious bite, all the way through the entire sandwich eating experience. It was cut hamburger style rather than diagonal, which was also a nice change-up. It paired nicely with the adaptogen Yerba mate that I also purchased. It also came very nicely wrapped which provided ample protection between my sandwich and the table once I unwrapped it to eat. Finally, I'd like to mention the incredible customer service and the fact that I really love the guys working there. It was a delightful experience. read more

I don't think this is necessarily the best local deli in SD, but I do think it's the best deli IN a liquor store. So if it were to compare to regular stand alone delis it's good, not the best as yelp rated it the #1 local spot. I had no issues with the sandwich. They used high quality meats and ingredients and assorted bread which gave it an extra touch. I got the Joeys Classic Italian sandwich. They pack on 3 different meats of which they use boars head. The meat slices were thick and plentiful. I got my toasted and that was a mistake. It just got too oily and soaked in the bread. Next time I'll try it not toasted. I got jalapeño bread and it had a good kick to it. Overall, I wouldn't say the best deli but it's pretty high up. I know other deli that uses their own meat and it's also very good, I still think Nosh is the top in downtown for lunch. But G&H is a good lunch spot, the Italian will cost you about $10. Make sure to check your sandwich as they gave my friend the wrong one. read more

As others have described, Grapes and Hops looks like a liquor store but operates as a well-functioning deli. I grabbed a sandwich here after I was at an event in the East Village. Like any valued local deli, it's sweet that a number of the sandwiches are named in accordance with the location and patronage. I got the Market Street Select (Sausalito Turkey Breast, 3 Pepper Jack Cheese, Leaf Lettuce, Tomato, Red Onion, Mayo) on Rosemary Parmesan Bread. Ordering was seamless and the sandwich came out quick. I enjoyed it on the patio, which is a good place to observe foot and vehicular traffic pass by. The only minor thing I would have liked is for the bread to be slightly toasted. All in all, Grapes and Hops has solid sandwiches with the right amount of ingredients and great customer service by the staff. There's even a loyalty program that's different than other typical sandwich spots: I believe you only need 6 purchases to get a reward! read more

So as I was on my way back to my hotel from wandering around, I stopped into this deli/alcohol store based on the yelp reviews. At first I thought I had read wrong - I saw bottles and bottles of alcohol...but no food. But tucked in the back is where they have a small deli counter. You can order your sandwich at the register. It takes a few minutes to make it and you are on your way (it comes with a pickle)! I ordered the Boardwalk - chipotle chicken breast, red peppers, provolone, avocado, spicy mustard, lettuce, tomato. You can choose what kind of bread you want - i decided to be healthy and chose whole wheat. It was delicious! Perfect for a quick late night snack - and they certainly don't skimp on the meat. For $9, a little pricey, but worth it. Don't let this place fool you - come in and get your sammie here!
