Don't look any further, Graspmore is the PT practice that you want. At week 5 of my ACL post-op rehab journey, my Big Box HMO PT practice was very casual about being booked up, maxed out, and not being able to book any appointments for me to be seen for more than 3 weeks. What the actual F ? PT is key to ACL recovery. I was also not pleased with Big Box HMO's approach - no hands on body work, and most of the time during the appts I had was having me do exercises unassisted and uncoached that I could do at home, didn't need a PT appt to do in the gym, with no guidance about form or purpose. I decided to look elsewhere and pay out of pocket, I didn't know what I needed but I knew that Big Box was not it. I got a recommendation and headed to Graspmore. My PT experience there is what PT should be: the assessments and plans are individualized to me and what my body needs with respect to my injury that day, with an explanation of why the plan is the plan, and how I can best implement the plan in between visits. My PT is at my side the entire time, there is no handoff to an unlicensed assistant, there is no "go do these exercises on your own while I am with another client" bs. Post-visit, I get a recap email the same day with notes of my status, progress, plan and instructions regarding anything new that we went over during the visit for me to focus on before the next visit. I am encouraged to email with any questions or concerns between visits and these are always answered in detail in a way that makes sense. The philosophy of care at Graspmore really puts the emphasis on you and your needs as an individual, both in that moment on that day and in the context of what your goals are and what your activities are in your life. Started seeing Steve last May for a groin issue and a pinched nerve in my neck. Since then, I have made quite a bit of progress in in fixing those issues (as well as other injuries that came up during my activities). I am playing basketball a lot more often now and don't have as much concern that I will get injured when I play, which is helping me be more active in general. The approach at Graspmore is also unlike that of other physical therapists because it is more of a collaborative effort where the patient can provide input into their path to recovery or how the session should be structured. This personal customization has given me a lot of knowledge and confidence in how to deal with my injuries and my progress over the past few months is indicative of that. I came to Kevin in spring 2021 having gone through the ringer of treatment options for an impinged nerve in my neck that was sending shooting pain down my left arm side and was preventing me from going to the gym and playing a lot of sports. In college (8 years ago) I experienced a traumatic lower leg injury (compound fracture of the tibia/fibula) and then more recently (2.5 years ago) was diagnosed with two herniated discs in my lower back. I scheduled a new patient assessment with Dr Kevin Fong related to worsening coccyx pain of unknown etiology. Kevin responded very promptly and I was able to set up a new patient consultation quickly and efficiently via the website. During my new patient visit, he performed a comprehensive history, listening intently on my experiences and thoughts about the pain and then performed an exam focusing on the location and referred components of my pain. He also provided treatments which almost immediately provided relief and a 'calming' of my aggravated coccyx; and most importantly started us on a path to discover how I got to that place, how to recover, and how to prevent recurrence in the future. After a few visits, I experienced a very bad ankle sprain and hobbled into my appointment for my previous issue. Kevin easily vaulted from my chronic pain issue to addressing the swelling and pain associated with my new ankle injury. Did I say I hobbled in and walked out?!! Hands on therapy provided tremendous relief and allowed me to return to work with minimal pain/limping and to perform my usual duties. My next few visits, Kevin was able to devote time to both problems, with the ankle healing up quicker than I anticipated and to my great satisfaction. We're still working on the coccyx issue, but it has markedly improved, and I'm learning new tools to maintain my cardio/resistance training without further aggravating it. I started working with Kevin 3 years ago after several bad ankle sprains and can say without a doubt that Kevin is the most clinically astute and dedicated physical therapist that I've ever worked with. From diagnosis to recovery, Kevin takes a holistic approach to making sure that your mind and body are in synchrony when you are recovering from a life altering injury. After my first ankle sprain, Kevin was the first person to diagnose the specifics around the severity of my injury. Every session, his approach was entirely scientific: he took stock in the areas of my body affected by my injury (it was more than just my ankle!); he documented relevant body and mobility measurements of interest to track my movement over time; and he checked in with my mind and how I perceived my own injury. Even as someone who is relatively "in-tune" with my body, Kevin always pointed out things that I overlooked or misjudged, or would take time to explain concepts like proprioception, which played a huge part in taking my recovery to the next level. Kevin also understood that I am a more serious athlete, and designed our sessions so that I could work on my mobility at an appropriate level of intensity. Came to see Steve Kim for chronic mid-upper back pain due to overuse in playing tennis. In our session, Steve performed a very thorough evaluation on my shoulder as well as the neck which could potentially be the area that causes the upper back discomfort. During our session, Steve didn't rush going into treatment and exercises. He spent a big chunk of time helping me understand what could be other underlining issues besides overuse of the shoulder. I particularly liked the customized take-home exercises that mimic certain tennis movements which keeps me engaged when I practice those exercises. I found Kevin through Yelp and had no previous connection to him. His reviews looked legit so I signed up for the in-person assessment. From the get-go, I found Kevin to be super engaged in trying to understand my situation and goals. He asked a lot of questions and I provided him a ton of details. (I had mentioned to him in passing that I keep a spreadsheet of my daily activities, and he asked if I was comfortable sharing any of that info with him after the appointment -- I was happy to share most of it to help in the diagnosis of my discomfort; I'm a former trail runner in my early 50s with a right knee that has felt unstable and uncomfortable as of late -- not super painful but enough to hinder my workouts.) Kevin was attentive, meticulous, encouraging and super accessible. He was an excellent health partner, taking the time to explain what might be going on, the plan of action going forward, and then making tweaks to the plan as I provided more data points on how my knee reacted to different exercises. Main takeaway: I'd turn to Kevin again in a heartbeat (and my wife has already scheduled an assessment with him this month). In three sessions, he's consistently shown both a high IQ and EQ. He's corrected my leg movement mechanics to alleviate the strain on my knee and has given me the confidence to resume my workouts. He even gave me guidance on how to improve my overall workout routine, which I immediately integrated. Final thought: I don't think I'm an easy grader, so anyone considering Kevin should feel a very high level of confidence about his abilities. If you're on the fence about whether you need a physical therapist in the first place or not, this is how I thought about it: -- Now vs. later: In the end, we're all going to "pay" for our health, it's just a matter of whether you want to spend that money in the preventable/your-body-is-still-fixable stage, or the later stage when things are more serious. Clearly, I'd opt for the former. -- Invest in the long term: If you have a pain or discomfort that really hasn't gone away, and it's affecting how you live or exercise, consider addressing it now. As someone in my early 50s, I've found that I need to be even MORE deliberate in being healthy, and I was fairly deliberate in my 30s and 40s. I have been working with Kevin for a couple years for physical therapy before and after two knee surgeries (ACL and 2x meniscus repair), strained hamstring, and more. After pinching a nerve in my shoulder I went to a few physical therapy offices I had visited in the past, only to realize the quality of care had plummeted. Discouraged, I started checking out other PT's in the area and noticed this private practice. I called Kevin up and was able to describe my shoulder issues in detail. Kevin was very attentive and eager to understand all of the underlying problems, as well as what I expected in terms of quality of care, and how I expected to work on the problems outside of PT visits. During the first appointment all of my anxiety was alleviated. Kevin was knowledgeable, professional, as well as diligent in his investigation into my shoulder injury. I could tell many aspects of his process was not "one size fits all". He tailored the process to address the underlying issues as well as strengthen around the problem areas. Prior to meeting Kevin, I'd given up on physical therapy. I dealt with pain from two injuries-- leg and shoulder-- for five and ten years, respectively. The pain and weakness persisted so perennially that I began to normalize it. A competitive high school runner and a lifelong martial artist, I used to take so much joy in movement. In recent years I began to feel stagnant and apathetic: simple activities like putting on socks, doing the laundry, and getting groceries caused intense discomfort, and it was hard to imagine myself ever moving with the same joy I used to, whether for exercise or even for fun. My previous therapists prescribed me rote exercises that I had a hard time connecting to my recovery or larger goals. Kevin, on the other hand, worked collaboratively with me to understand my goals and, most importantly, took the time to speak with me as a peer and help me learn WHY we were doing what we were doing.
