My girlfriend and I came into this overpriced establishment this morning. We ordered two orders of the Toast with their special butter and honey. One w avocado and one w egg. Not only did it take 15 minutes, but they forgot one of the orders and had to take another 10 minutes for the second. But that's not what bothered me most. It was the fact that their toast is ONE piece of toast!! One thin piece of toast with a little butter and honey and the topping we got (avocado or egg) which is EXTRA money. So for $6 per order, we walked out of there still starving!! One piece of toast?? Never heard of that in my life. That's a racket. That's robbery. We were hungry and wanted something healthy. I absolutely love this place and will go out of my way to come here. I first tried their Best Breakfast smoothie years ago, and it always stuck out in my mind as the best smoothie that I've ever tasted. When I finally made it back to Grass Roots, I was pleasantly surprised to see that they had expanded the space to include a fantastic shop carrying all sorts of cool products and a really enjoyable seating area in the back! Every time I've been there, many seats in the back have been available. The Best Breakfast smoothie was still on the menu (yay!), as well as so many other delicious & thoughtful drinks and food items. The fridge was full of delicious pre-made items, and I've fallen in love with the tofu scramble. The smoothies are super filling and surprisingly inexpensive compared to many of the other smoothie places in the area. Also, you have to try the matcha energy bites! The gift shop is really fun to check out while you wait for your smoothie. read more

Decent juice and smoothies; expensive prices. I was super excited to see that a health spot was nearby, so I decided to give this place a try for breakfast! They offer a variety of fresh smoothies, juices, coffee, acai bowls, and vegan/vegetarian options. They also have bottled juices and packaged food for a convenient meal on the go. I ordered the Power of Acai smoothie, the Fruity Spice juice, and a dragonfruit bowl (it was their special of the day or month(?)) for a total cost of $24. And mind you the juice was only 12 oz! My Fruity Spice juice was good, the ginger overpowered the rest of the ingredients, but it wasn't unbearable. The smoothie was decent and the cup was huge, however they didn't fill it up to the top! If I'm paying $8.50 for a smoothie it not only should be amazing, but it should also be FULL. The dragonfruit bowl topped with shredded coconuts and sliced bananas was pretty amazing. However, I saw that they had pre-sliced the bananas and placed them in the freezer. Why not slice it fresh.. especially if it's a topping. But hey that's just me. I also made a grave mistake of asking for granola on top. It had what tasted like rosemary...mixed in the granola.. for what's supposed to be a sweet snack. I don't know. it just didn't work for me and I ended up scooping all of it off. Lastly, the staff wasn't very attentive, moved at a slow pace, and forgot things in my order. Overall, I had a less than average experience. Not sure if it's worth another try despite it being close by. read more

This was my first time interacting with this establishment. I called to check on whether or not one item I was planning to order was vegan and was hung up on. I assumed it was a mistake or a bad connection and quickly called back after turning off my WI-FI. The same woman answered the phone and responded to me asking if she could hear me by asking, "are you a human?" I was confused. The woman on the phone was apparently frustrated about repeated prank calls and accused me of being the perpetrator. I was confused and informed her that I was not the person. I informed her that I called because I planned to order (my cart was $80+) food and didn't expect this hostility. With a raised voice I was chastised for calling three times and not saying anything. Not true. I let her know that if she was going to talk to me this way I would not be ordering food at all. She said fine and hung up on me again. Very disappointing and unnecessary. read more

Just yesterday, I ordered the "Local Lozenge" before a visit to the doctor's office and waited for about 15mins for it. When my drink was ready. I could tell the barista was having some trouble securing the top on my drink. When she finally handed it over, she looked a little "guilty," but I had to run, so I didn't think anything of it. I stepped outside to walk toward the train and stopped to take a sip of my drink. It was so unbearably hot that I burned my tongue immediately. Also, the top of my cup wouldn't stay on. Perhaps it should have been a clue to the person who made the drink that if the plastic top was losing its shape as she topped it, the drink might be too hot. As I walked onto the train platform, I tried cooling my drink by blowing on it, but couldn't top it and it was really too hot to hold even through the heat-absorbing sleeve. So there I was, holding this drink I couldn't drink and couldn't hold or cover on a moving train. Now it's the next day and the doctor gave me some meds to help me get over this cold. Major bummer, though, that aside from fever, chills, a really bad sore throat and an incessant cough, I also burned off my taste buds, so i can't even taste my food now. Thanks for that, guys. This is a great little health food spot that offers a variety of healthy meals for any time of the day. I've just started a new job in the area and considering it's the New Year I've made a choice, like most people, to try and eat healthier. It's nice to have a place I can get a healthy juice or meal. So far I've tried a couple of fruit and vegetable juices and they taste pretty good. My current favorite is the Booster. As for food I've tried the organic oatmeal with a little maple syrup and it's very delicious and quite filling so it's probably going to be my go to for breakfast. I've also tried a taco salad (not sure of the name ). It's wasn't my cup of tea but that's more about my preference than the quality of the salad but I did eat it all. There is also some room for eating and getting some work done similar to a coffee shop as well as little gifts to buy if you are inclined. Overall, I liked this place a lot and I am looking forward to trying the PB&J and to getting a bit healthier this year. read more

Sometimes you just don't want eggs on a Saturday, and before my GF and I went to McCarren to read and enjoy the sunshine, we popped in for some smoothies. It was delicious! Perfect for that 80 degree weather that is descending upon NYC with a fury. I was, hand to god, full after my shake. A little extra whey and you will be too. Lines can get a bit long, so prep yourself for a wait. But a modicum degree of patience is well worth the end result. I will never return to this store again. I have been a customer at this location for over 2 years and I just walked in with my tote bag (as usual because they charge 25 cents a bag) and was getting over $200 worth of items and placing them in my tote bag to purchase at the register because I didn't want to walk around carrying a bunch of products in my hands since I thought they didn't have carriers. Turns out they do have carriers but they are behind a bunch of product on the very right side of the store so it is very hard to see. Anyhow, I'm placing juices, sea moss, snacks, etc in my tote bag to purchase at the register and the owner starts screaming at me yelling "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!" and I responded with "I'm putting items in my tote bag to purchase at the register because I don't want to carry all of this" and she continues to yell at me accusing me of stealing. Are you kidding me? I'm literally trying to be eco friendly by bringing my own bag and also trying to considerate of people standing in line at the register by not putting my items at the cash register. I've been coming to this place for two years. That just shows you how little they care for their customers. I have bright pink hair and am easily recognizable yet the owner has no idea who I am and accuses me of stealing. I've honestly wanted to stop coming here in the past based on how they treat their customers and now you can guarantee I will never be returning despite it being the only juice bar close to my house. I've never experienced such disrespect in a wellness location in my entire life and I've worked in wellness for the last 10 years. It is literally my job to curate wellness products for locations just like grassroots. I will also be contacting all my connections in the wellness industry who sell their products there to let them know of the terrible customer service I just experienced there today. We stopped in here when all the coffee shops in the area were full thinking it would be a nice place to sip coffee and wait for our brunch place to open, and it ended up being really pleasant. The decorations are adorable and the staff is extremely friendly, even if you're not even there to spend the big bucks on juice. My only qualms were that the seats weren't very comfortable (which I guess makes sense -- it's a huge space but not really somewhere to linger) and the bathroom door does not have a lock on it. I love the juice here. It makes me feel like I'm back home in LA. I recently had a panic attack that left my digestive system in shambles (everything wanting to exit immediately). I came here and grabbed a 3-day cleanse and am feeling much better. You're supposed to order cleanses ahead of time because they do not always have enough of everything on hand, so I did have to substitute, but they were very accommodating and helpful in recommending what to get instead. I'm very thankful they let me get a cleanse on such short notice, I was feeling terrible and couldn't keep anything solid down, it was the perfect reset. For those who are complaining that the juices are ridiculously priced: these are cold-pressed juices. This means that not only are more fruits and vegetables needed to make the juice, the juices are also packed with more nutrients and weren't sitting in a factory for weeks before getting to the shelf. This place has been one of my go-to spots for years, but ever since their space expansion I feel the food isn't worth the price. I bought an $8 turkey and brie sandwich on sliced bread - the brie amounted to the tiniest dab on one slice. I also purchased an $11 greek kale salad (nice size & has always been one of my favs) with 4 olives and barely any other ingredients besides the kale. My chai coffee tasted way off. I was pretty bummed overall. On a positive note, the service, juice and smoothies are still on point, but after my experience this morning, I may be taking a break for awhile. read more

I used to absolutely LOVE Grass Roots Juicery since I found this smoothie/juice treasure of a place after moving into the neighborhood. They even have gluten free sweet treats... and all at great prices! That is, until I walked in this morning to get my regular Saturday morning smoothie. My regular $5.50 purchase had increased to $7 in a matter of a week. Other juices were $2 more! I was appalled. I understand that rents go up etc. but I think that increasing your prices over 40% in some cases is just BAD BUSINESS. The entire board had changed with the new prices as well extra information on the drinks including the use of "organic" next to their almond/coconut milk. I will pay a little extra for organic but I don't remember them using it in the past. (I religiously observe these things.) Well, lo and behold, they still use non-organic milk (I asked!)... so not only have they jacked up their prices but are falsely describing their products. I walked away disappointed, disgruntled and sad not only because my smoothie was icier than normal but I knew that this would probably be the last time I could support this business. read more
