Ordered delivery from here today. HUGE portions for a great price. Food was tasty but I ordered the sweet and sour soy protein, it's actually not soy protein it's tofu. Which is fine. But there was soooo much fried breading, the meal was literally all batter with small pieces of tofu that were overcooked. The juice was all absorbed in the insane amounts of batter that the food was dry. There was no sauce (which actually was tasty). See photos. I ordered it with a side of white rice bcs the online menu said it was just rice and broccoli, but it actually comes with rice. So I got two portions lol. Got the wontons which were also a little over cooked, the wontons were chewy rather than crispy. I would eat here again however would tell them please less batter. read more

I feel really bad giving this place a bad review because the food was good but there is just something I cannot overlook. We placed out order for delivery and we were pretty excited to try it out. We ordered the lo mein, sweet and also sensation, tempura, veggie roll sushi, and 2 juices. The portions were huge and we started to eat and the food was tasty. But when I started to drink my juice I noticed it was very pulpy and I saw some little black pieces floating around (my juice was orange so it was very noticeable) and upon further inspection it was a bug! There was the body floating and all of the different pieces of legs were all floating around and I instantly stopped and felt sick. I went to pour it out and there were a few bugs in it, more than I had originally seen. The first bug I saw was very noticeable, I'm not sure how the people at the restaurant didn't notice!! It made me not want to continue further with my meal because how could I be sure this place was clean and I wasn't going to find other critters in the food. It was just very unappetizing after that. Finally get takeout from this place since my last visit a year ago. The restaurant is well known for their vegan chinese food and generous portion. Unlike most places where the portion size had become smaller , takeout vs dine in, Grasshopper keeps up with their generous portion size. Thumbs up! Got a chow foon with veggies and tofu, which travels well and tasted fresh & good. Also got an order of their specials- tofu fillet steak. Portion is extremely generous but I feel that flavor is more on the bland side. Was better when I had it at the restaurant. Great experience getting delivery via Ubereats from the place. Absolute steal. The amount of food you get for what you pay is great, and it's all vegan! The coconut noodles and anything with the seitan are really good. They have so many creative options to try. The inside is actually pretty nice, it's a shame more people don't go in person. My only complaint is that they could use less plastic in their takeout packaging. read more

Hands down one of the best vegan restaurants in Boston. Very inexpensive, huge portions, and a decent variety of dishes. For those not too familiar with the place, they serve fake-meat versions of popular asian-style cuisine. Some of the food is a little too fried for my liking, but that doesn't mean there's not healthy choices here (kale, buckwheat noodles, and great soups.) BBQ veggie-pork is a-mazing, as well as the tofu hand rolls, bean cake, and delight soup. Many people are all about the no-name but as it's battered gluten, deep-fried and doused in sweet and sour sauce, it's too much for me. I decided to make my first experience at the Grasshopper their monthly Sunday buffet, which is available on the third Sunday for $10 ($10.70 after tax) all day long. The place filled up pretty well during my meal, but we didn't exactly reach full capacity, as the staff's action of attempting to seat separate parties right on top of each other had led me to believe. While my dirty plates were never removed, water was poured and refilled, so I didn't mind. The buffet was laid out by the front window, which worried me somewhat, as the noon day sun drenched items that I imagined would have been better kept cool - such as the plate of fresh rolls, and the cubed tofu by the soups. But since the buffet had been laid out only recently, I figured it was safe enough. Options included two soups (deconstructed miso soup that you could add the tofu cubes and dried seaweed to your heart's content, and spicy hot and sour soup), several appetizers (the above mentioned fresh rolls, fried vegetarian spring rolls, vegi-chicken fingers, fried vegetarian wonton, fried vegetarian dumpling, stir-fried assorted fresh vegetables, kale and seitan, spicy black peppers and garlic beef-style seitan, the specialty No Name, lomein noodles with vegi-beef, brown rice, fresh lettuce, pickled carrots and daikon, and a selection of dressing and sauces. Everything was fine, but I especially enjoyed the fried springrolls and the No Name, which reminded me greatly of General Gau Chicken, minus the spicy. And I noticed red bits and pepper seeds among many of the dishes offered in the buffet, which briefly caused this spice wimp some concern as to whether she'd find anything to eat, but no, they weren't too hot for me. The fake meats found within the fried batter of the fingers and the No Name were rectangular slices reminiscent of Indian paneer in taste and texture. If you're hoping to use one of those discount vouchers that you picked up online at the Grasshopper, save yourself a bit of trouble and/or embarrassment - even if the voucher itself doesn't say otherwise, the owner won't let you use it for the Sunday buffet special. Save it to use for a regular lunch or dinner instead. Hopefully they'll clarify things on the next deal they decide to offer, so that everything is correctly spelled out for both our sakes (restaurant and patron). 3 stars. *** 5/2011 visit *** For dinner, two of us shared the #52 House Vermicelli Noodles with Roasted Veggie-Pork, Pork-Chop, Spring-roll, Rice Cake and Salad $10.50 and a less spicy version of the #44 Spicy Curry Vermicelli Noodles with Sweet Potato and Tofu Broth $8.50 and still had leftovers to go. #52 surprised me by arriving with a bowl of hot water and a plate of dry rice paper to roll with. Yay! Fun with food! And it was a generous # of sheets - maybe 10? #44 was creamy good, but maybe a little too one note a dish to just have as my entire meal. Good thing we were sharing both! Delicious but definitely has a more of a Americanized and Western spin on the food. I've always been a huge fan of faux meat (they nailed it!), but was a little disappointed that they were out of taro for the bird's nest dish at 7pm on a Saturday night. Serving sizes are HUGE, and it's best to share these dishes family style. The "Spicy Steak Fillet" wasn't spicy at all, but the black bean sauce mixed with the generous amount of kale/spinach/tofu made the entire dish feel light and wholesome. We also tried the popular "No Name" dish, which was deceiving indeed - if you told me to blind taste it, I would probably tell you it's sweet and sour chicken! Other yelpers complained that it wasn't crispy enough but ours was just fine. The restaurant is so close to FoMu that it's almost a must to go over there for dessert. I actually noticed 3 tables that were in Grasshopper at FoMu afterwards...looks like there's some sort of collaboration opportunity there! read more

Atmosphere: I came here on a Saturday around 1pm for lunch - very quiet on the inside, and the wait staff tended to be in the kitchen, so when you arrive it does take a bit to get seated but once you're seated he does attend to you a few times. Very quiet. Not the most updated restaurant, but the food makes up for the atmosphere! Food: VERY extensive menu. From other reviews, it seems the No Name is most famous. We ordered an assorted platter of appetizers: spring roll, fried bean pocket, fried wonton, fried muffin. It was a great variety and delicious! We also ordered the eggplant with tofu and asparagus - huge portion and delicious. The price is a little steep for just vegetarian dishes, but it's not bad. It's just that the markup from its ingredients is pretty high.. especially for the atmosphere. Usually other Asian restaurants of similar caliber would charge $8-9 for this kind of dish with meat, whereas grasshopper charges $13 - again, not too steep, but just so you're not surprised! I had a phenomenal meal at Grasshopper with a couple of (non-vegan) friends, and everyone loved all of the food we ate. I recommend coming with a crowd, so you can order a bunch of dishes family-style and sample widely. We tried the house special assorted appetizers (most of which were fried or were spring rolls of various sorts, and all of which were delicious), sauteed spinach with garlic (which was really delicious), an eggplant and tofu dish and a mushroom dish whose exact names I can't recall, each of which was really tasty. There's plenty here for omnivores and vegans alike. Each dish was around $10 or $12, and the portions were big: the three of us feasted and had more than enough leftovers for a couple of lunches the next day. The service was kind, quick, and very friendly. The atmosphere is definitely low-key and casual, but the restaurant was clean and pleasant. One person in our group was gluten-sensitive, and they did a good job of identifying which foods contained wheat/gluten. I'm not sure if someone with celiac or a greater sensitivity (e.g., someone who can't eat soy sauce) would be able to eat here, so you'd want to call. I have been here twice so far - all within less than a week's time. I love that they have live plants as decoration all over the place. The service is excellent. I order the No Name - which as my vegan friend pointed out is their vegan version of General Tso's chicken. It was fried battered gluten in a spicy sauce. Delicious! The gluten had the perfect texture. The sauce was very flavourful and a nice addition to the gluten. It came with brown (you can choose white) rice and vegetables. Decided to check the place out on their 3rd Sunday buffet. For the folks that don't know...the restaurant hosts an all day buffet on every 3rd Sunday of each month for less than $12. This is a great introduction to their popular items without breaking the piggy bank. We arrived around noon and the restaurant was practically full...though they weren't fully set up yet. All the tables are grouped together like a communal setting. People were just waiting around for them to bring out the dishes. It's rather interesting...almost like a clear understanding among the regulars that this was the norm. When majority of the food are brought out, people start lining up. They do offer a decent amount of selection - their famous no name crispy meat dish (equivalent to sweet and sour chicken or pork), fried spring rolls, hot and sour soup, beef and broccoli, salad, stir fry veggies and couple different noodle dishes. I'm giving 5 stars for the food - it was the best Chinese food we've had and it happened to be Vegetarian/vegan. We had the No Name (General Tso's with seitan), Veggie Lo Mein and Hot & Sour Soup. Hands down best Hot & Sour Soup I've had. The Lo Mein was delicious and had a very tasty sauce, which is a treat compared to it usually being dry (and sometimes oily) at most restaurants. Grasshopper was good - we went on Sunday so we had the buffet. The place was pretty packed. I liked that there was a fresh salad (green leaf lettuce, not iceberg), brown rice, two soups, lots of fresh veggies, and a good assortment of dishes. I expected it to be a lot greasier - yes, there were some deep fried wontons and such, but the stir fried items were actually pretty healthy. It was like something I would have cooked for myself at home, in terms of oil content. There was even Kale, which I'd never seen in asian food, so I appreciated the abundance of vegetables. Good stuff. Looks like they have quite a different menu for a la carte. I'll have to try that next time. I've ordered take out for lunch and the first time I thought it was a bit pricey. I got the veggie rolls, hot and sour soup and a stir fry mix. All good but for almost $20 I was a bit taken back. When I went in to pick up my order I grabbed a menu and then saw the lunch specials. OK - much better $7 got me an app, half soup and an entree. Again, loved the veggie roll, H&S and the tofu stir fry. I am not so crazy about the fake meat but may give it a whirl again. I went here with my militant vegan friends to enjoy some cruelty-free dining last night. It was an interesting experience. The TEA was awesome. I forgot to ask what kind it was. I had a couple cups. My miso soup should have been hotter (I think they forgot about it), and was loaded with seaweed. I will give it a shot again, no seaweed. Upon fellow yelper Allix T's recomendation, I went with the sweet and sour tofu chicken fingers. I'm going to be eating this again soon here at my house, as I brought most of it home. SO RICH. Like, ridiculously rich. The veggies were fresh and crisp, the fake chicken was tasty, but the sauce these things were floating in was ridiculous. Straight up corn syrup I swear. It was so thick and there was so much of it. It was cool and intense for a few bites, but I couldn't deal with it after a while. I recently completed a month long vegan challenge with a few friends, and I stumbled into Grasshopper on one of my dark notes when the healthy vegan options weren't cutting it. Grasshopper soon became one of my favorite vegan options, and I've even visited after ending the vegan challenge! When you're eating a vegan diet, this spot is great to know that everything on the menu is safe to eat, even if some of the plates may make you forget! The fried wontons, dumplings, and spring rolls are great (may be worth trying the house special assorted appetizers??) but the entre highlight is the "no name" which is basically a general gao chicken lookalike made with fried seitan.
