Stopped in this bar after leaving dinner next door. There were just a couple people in there but we weee quickly greeted by a very friendly bartender. She recommended a couple drinks while she chatted with us and she prepared them. They have a music box (not sure what they are called but you can pick your songs and don't have to pay which is a super bonus. Drinks reasonably priced for San Fran. Definitely a no frills dive bar located in Chinatown that's perfect for reasonably priced drinks. The vibe is chill; what you'd expect from a dive bar in the middle of the day after brunch hours. There were five of us and we took up a section of the bar. There was still about 2/3 of the bar left as well as seating against the wall. The bartender was very attentive and and fun. We were a bit rowdy from a previous bar but the bartender hyped us up which added to the fun of it all. Location wise, Grasslands is perfectly situated next to a bunch of great restaurants so this spot is perfect for both before a meal or after one. read more

Grasslands is a very locals- neighborhood bar/pub that is a great place to have a cold beer and great conversation with friends. Unfortunately they don't have food but there is a Quickly right next door and the bartender lets you bring in any food you like as long as you have a beverage of your choice. So the decor isn't anything special just a simple small bar which mostly locals come here but I luv it. They really hook you up on your drinks. Came in for a nightcap after dinner with friends- and what a mistake!! The bartender was drunk as hell- she could barely take our order. When she finally handed us one drink out of the four we ordered- she took my credit card off the bar and threw it at me- for no reason! I asked her if she was ok?? She was mumbling and waving her arms erratically. My husband turned to me and said let's get out of here- this is nuts!! My friends and I agreed and we left. As we were walking out the bartender started yelling profanities at us!! What a nut job!! And what a waste of an amazing space that borders North Beach and Chinatown. We are natives- and have NEVER been treated with such disrespect in a bar in SF. Folks- stay away!! Go across the street the Specs- where you will be treated right! Turns out we bumped into some people we knew, so we went back and forth from a table by the jukebox to the bar. Lots to like about this upscale dive - friendly service, happy hours, daily drink specials, and Street Fighter arcade machine. But my favorite aspect of the bar is the variety of beers on tap which set it apart from Chinatown bars. Usual suspects like Asahi and Blue Moon to more unique brews like 21st Amendment's Brew Free Or Die and Black In Black IPAs. As an added bonus, you can grab some deep fried grub from Quickly next door and bring it into the bar - popcorn chicken and calamari rings make perfect companion to brewskis. 12.9.11: This place is awesome. Most drinks was about $5 or $6 and they have a check-in offer that is $1.50 off any drink. What more would you ask for? Well how about the ability to play street fighter? Yes I said it. And its free, they provide the arcade type controller which is hooked up to their flat screen tv. RACIST!!! I walked in there tonight just trying to get my friends and I a beer. As a tall African American women, they treated me so strangely. They acted like i should not have been there and the bartender acted like she needed permission to serve me. She would not take my order and made me feel very uncomfortable. I definitely see the potential here - small, dark bar with nice music and it's less than one block from the Hilton where I was staying but beer selection is quite poor and maybe I just came in on the wrong night, but there were almost no people here and one of them was the bartender boyfriend so didn't really find an opportunity for a conversation or anything and left after one beer. I am a sexy bitch. I know this because Sue, the bartender at Grassland, told me so, several times in fact. Plus, I was with someone else equally sexy so together we were super sexy. Sue might have told us that, too, but I was not paying attention. I was, however, paying enough attention to notice she did not call me modest. Go figure. Sue makes this place. She has all sorts of card tricks and dirty jokes to entertain you, and will not make fun of you if you are too drunk to remember the punch line from the last time you visited. She will loan you a sharpie so you can write dirty things on dollar bills and post them up with all of the other dollar bills hanging everywhere. If you are a repeat customer, and if she thinks you are sexy, she will give you a gift you likely will never use, and possibly a free lighter which you likely will use. This place should be condemned, but that just adds to its charm. There is nothing like a dive bar with many years worth of recycling stacked against the left half of the bar, really bad karaoke filtering in from the establishment next door and a restroom in which any number of injuries could occur. It is especially cool that, should you actually find this bar open, you will probably have it to yourself because despite the sign outside stating "Where good friends and girls meet" there are none of either to be found. Hopefully when you pass by this place it is open - it is quite an experience. BTW this sexy bitch gave up 31 UFCs to rewrite this review because now that I have finally experienced Grassland how could I let my original review, from 6/13/07, stand; Negative stars for Grassland right now. This is the sort of complete shit hole I would normally award 5 stars to. I will likely change my rating once someone tells me either A. what their hours are or B. where the secret door is.... I was on the huntdown for this place. I thought it was actually called "Where Good Friends and Girls Meet" but that's just the slogan under the sign. So without knowing where it was, my buddy and I stopped into Mr. Bing's to inquire about it. Bruce, the surly bartender there, said the palce was "lousy" - not very yelp friendly if you ask me. So with that remark in mind, he sent us on our way to find our personal holy grail... When we entered, we quickly realized why he considered this place lousy. It's beyond a dive, and might be a front for the Chinese mafia. Jerry, the bartender, was startled to see us come in, but he did end up serving us. We asked what's the specialty, his reply was something like, "I'm not the one drinking, you are, how should I know." We went with some Anchor Steams. About half way through our beers, we noticed the one other patron in the bar, and we bought him a round. He seemed bewildered and had trouble speaking, in fact he wasn't exactly sure where he was. Classy. There's a jukebox, but Jerry keeps it unplugged, and taking over - I swear 1/4 of the bar are bags and boxes of empty bottles. Not sure why they're there, or when they'll be picked up. Come to think of it, there might have been human organs in there, for all I know. Oh, I asked why it's called Grassland. Jerry: "Dunno, there's no grass." Grassland, or as it pronounced to me by a very inebriated Sue, Graceland. I must have been past this place a hundred times, and every time it was always closed. Well one night the gang was out for the usual drinks and lo and behold they were open. YEAH!!! Why most of the night is a bit hazy i do remember the following... "what the hell is this place?" "a bar... i think" "are you sure it looks like a recycling joint" "no i see booze" "cool" Sue told us alot of dirty jokes which she read out of her notebook, and then hounded us to tell her ours, which she then wrote down, somewhat incorrectly. Awesome. I remember there was tons of your typical bar snacks as well as things you'd not normally see, i asked for M&M's, she had me buy them individually, as in 2 cents a piece. YEAH Awesome! As for the recycling, i never did find out why there were bags of it EVERYWHERE but hey there was an ancient chinese man sleeping on top of them so whatever, a bed's a bed right? One of the coolest dive bars that turned into a mini lounge. Great establishment with a cherry bartender, nice bathroom, great drink specials, a video game with multiple games, and an online jukebox. Chinatown's dive bars are slowly evolving to the times. You can have that more upscale feel to a dive bar but still get those dive bar prices. This is definitely one of the bars you need to visit besides the usual suspects of Mr Bings, Li Po, and Bow Bow's. read more

What an absolute F-ing cesspool. I love it. As a cautionary warning; I'd recommend not going here unless you are or are accompanied by a seasoned bar patron. Stop the presses. The new management has exploded a 1000 lb bomb in this place, destroying the dump it was before, turning it into one of the nicest bars that I have visited in a very long time. The only thing that this place shares from the previous operation, is the name and location. In my opinion, they should have named it something like "The New Grasslands", to separate their reputation, from the old establishment. Selection of drinks are good and CHEAP! Let me repeat the last part, CHEAP! In these troubled economic times, this is the place that SF needed. The decor inside is very nice. Having visited the old place before, I couldn't believe my eyes, when I saw the remodeling job. This was planned out well. The staff is very friendly, and kept the drinks flowing. I had dialog all day, when I only wanted to stop in for a few drinks. When needed, the nice TV's would keep me company with a game or show. There aren't a lot of options in terms of beer either, but it's a pretty solid joint if you're not expecting much. A lot of professionals tend to come here after work since it's located near the FiDi.. ehh, not really.. it's more like the outskirts of Chinatown to me. A couple of good work friends and I (who happen to be girls, so the slogan is true) were eating across the street at Gary Danko's decided to bring our underaged friend there to grab a drink. (She was 19! Tsk tsk, I know.) Sharp contrast! This place is dive bar to the max but that's what's so great about it! Diana (I think that's her name) the bartender for that night was so sweet. She entertained us with jokes and providing us with free chips and other junk food snacks. She rocks.
