I first tried this ice cream at the Whey Stationary, and thought it was notable. I got the chance to visit Grassroots this weekend, and I am definitely a fan. I was so impressed with the unique flavors. I got a scoop of rosemary cashew caramel ice cream, and a scoop of brownie buttercream. I was so thrilled with my picks. My husband got goat cheese blackberry and jasmine huckleberry. His was fantastic too. We went there to try exotic flavors, and we were not disappointed. Grassroots offered plenty of more traditional flavors as well, that I would be happy to try. I wish this place was a little more accessible from the Hartford area. However, judging from the large crowd that was there, people are willing to travel for it. It's worth it!! read more

My oh my! I think I am in love! The selection is the bomb that is if you can have Dairy. My hubby just ended up with a soda because they only had 2 Sorbet's that he could choose from and he didn't like either. Here's to hoping they will start to offer more non-dairy options. Me, I was in Ice Cream Land. Oh the choice's to decide between. I was able to try several flavors before making my decision. Although this proved to make my choice quit harder. Ugh! So, I chose 3 flavors Sunflower Honey Butter which had a buttery honey flavored Ice Cream speckled with sunflower seeds, Sunday Morning Breakfast which was Maple & Bacon flavored & Cardamon, Cashew & Medjool Date which was a Cardamon flavored Ice Cream with Cashew and Medjool date chunks. All three were awesome. And let's just say I am very happy this place is about 25 minutes away because I would be here quite often if it was closer. Maybe they should open a location in Glastonbury...What wait did I just say that...um maybe they shouldn't. If you can have Dairy this place is the bomb! So many inventive flavors, they really know how to step out of the box and make it work. My Dad had a Vanilla Ice Cream with a Jalapeño swirl and My Mother had a tasty Dark chocolate Ice Cream with cinnamon & chili's. Definitely make a trip out here! It is so worth it. This is such a great place. I've been here a few times recently, both for ice cream and lunch. Their online system is efficient and easy to use, I always order ahead and my food is ready when I arrive. They're not letting anyone inside during the pandemic, but there's lots of room outside if you want to eat there. The ice cream flavors are unique and tasty! 1.) Just to warm you up (then cool you down with Ice Cream): I use to never be an ice cream fan. I was just a Vanilla, Vanilla Bean, French Vanilla kind of guy. There is something that I respect in regards to Contemporary America, and that would be their food. What your eyes may see: Granby, Simsbury and the surrounding towns are beautiful - lots of trees, calm atmosphere, and a dash of old town spice give it a great escape from the metropolitan lifestyle. Located in a busy section of Granby (high traffic), Grass Roots Ice Cream still holds it's appeal. 3.) The goods (the ice cream): I have never seen flavors like this before. They serve maple bacon ice cream but unfortunately it was not available the day I came in. I like how they make batches of ice cream right on the premises. The owner even explained how she had to "mix it, and get it hardened first, let it sit....." Sounded cool to me. I tried the Vanilla just to see what quality I was dealing with. I was amazed. Then I got the Molasses oatmeal cookie ice cream. Boy did it taste Fresh. Man did that taste rich. Baby did it taste creamy. I haven't had something so good like this before. I savored every moment of it. Wow. 4.) Staff: I got to meet two sweethearts for staff - Eliza and Ali. They wanted me to come back and pick up their Maple Bacon in a few days 5.) Easily the best ice cream in the area. It's so rich and satisfying, but doesn't leave you feeling overly full and sick after you eat it. Great variety of flavors to choose from, and they're always changing. The cones are also creative and taste great. Good selection of toppings. Only drawback is the cost, as is the case with all ice cream shops. But the prices are standard for "luxury" ice cream. Well worth it. read more

This area of CT--and really, New England in general--has exceptional ice cream. (It probably has something to do with the dairy farms). With the addition of Grass Roots Creamery, I kind of feel like the area has an embarrassment of riches. I knew I had to try Grass Roots after a neighbor proclaimed it the best ice cream she's ever had in her life. Grass Roots is really, really good. The sweet cream and chocolate are amazing I'm not going to compare it to Tulmeadow ice cream, because Tulmeadow is also really, really good, and I have known many people who would proclaim it the best ice cream they've ever had. But I do think a great summer weekend would include a stop at Grass Roots on Saturday (they're closed Sunday) followed by a trip to Tulmeadow the following day. read more

The ice cream here at Grass Roots is seriously some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted. I can't get enough. The flavors aren't your typical ice cream flavors; they're unique but have basic tastiness that satisfy your taste buds. There is a wide range of flavors available daily, so everyone will be able to find at least one flavor to enjoy. (Except me--I found about five I love, and I'm definitely going to keep trying more!!) Only happy taste buds and bellies will result after enjoying this ice cream. A light, good and content-full feeling are the results of the ice cream churned here, and no aftertaste, which I can attest to after trying a number of flavors. I sampled the Honey Lavender, Lemon-Ginger, Mexican Chocolate, Salted Caramel, and Chai Tea Latte. I really enjoyed each, all living up to their names and descriptions. The best of these (and these are the best of the best ice cream) are Honey Lavender, Salted Caramel, and Chai. Each flavor was simply perfect in sweetness and texture. I had to get a Chai milkshake, while my friend got a great sized Salted Caramel cone. My friend said it was the best Salted Caramel she's ever had, and gave me a taste, and I have to agree that it's hands-down the best Salted Caramel!! And, yes, a Chai milkshake. Our server made an outstanding milkshake, with the perfect balance of milk and ice cream. The chai spice flavor was not lost in this tasty concoction. I can't get enough of the Chai ice cream from Grass Roots. I had to get a hand-packed pint for home so I can keep enjoying this deliciousness!! One of the owners came out while the server was making my milkshake, and I told him the Chai was just a spectacular flavor, tasting just like the chai spice without being too overwhelming. He said it was an experimental flavor, and I emphasized [strongly] it should be a regular flavor because it is just perfect in every way. (Hopefully they decide to keep it as a regular flavor!!) If this is an experiment here, and it's THAT good, can you imagine how the regular flavors are? Yum!! The staff at Grass Roots is simply spectacular like the ice cream it scoops. Our server, Laura, was so kind and really hard-working. She was running the shop by herself when my friend and I went, and she was so efficient in scooping treats and giving samples to everyone who eagerly stepped through the door. And she gave me tips after scooping my Chai into a pint on how to keep my ice cream fresh. She was wonderful!! I've been wanting to try Grass Roots for quite some time, and now that I have, I'm so glad I did!! I live in Windsor Locks so I decided to try out this ice cream place because it had such great reviews. I was specifically driven to go because of the all natural component of the ice cream as it was important to me for it not be fillers with dyes, etc. I went on a Friday night (it opened the night before) and it was surprisingly busy especially for the weather we've been having here lately. I was greeted by an array of flavors and friendly staff. I decided to get two scoops of cannoli flavored ice cream which totaled out to be 4.95 with tax. The ice cream was fantastic. Came here with a friend while on a roadtrip. The place is in the middle of nowhere but I felt it is worth the drive. We arrived sort of late around 830 and it rains hard, but the place was packed! I love this place. Have you ever had just really good food and then you think about it time to time afterwards?... this is one of them for me at least. I went last weekend and I've thought about it at least 3 times this week. The ice cream here is so creamy and so delicious. Packed with flavor and had many different unique flavors as well. Boyfriend and I shared and got the honey lavender bc I'm a sucker for anything lavender. What a great way to end my summer ice cream search! This place has some delicious and innovative flavors what will be sure to curb your cravings. Honestly, you need to try several flavors before you can possibly pick just one, or two. The names are descriptive, but the flavors are so unique that's it's difficult to imagine what a delight it will taste like! But I thoroughly enjoyed trying them all. I ended up ordering a cone with Boysenberry Jasmine and Key Lime Cheesecake. The Boysenberry Jasmine was fragrant and refreshing, the Key Lime Cheesecake was creamy and tangy which was perfect for my palate. I also tried the Honey Lavender (also a sweet and fragrant flavor), Green Tea (a classic taste), and Honey Butter Sunflower Seed (the name is long, but the flavor is spot on-- sweet with an almost nutty hint to it). The Banana Graham was probably my least favorite-- it did taste like banana, but didn't have that creamy texture like some of the other flavors. After a tough decision, it ended up being a little over $10 for two double scoops. Not bad at all! There's also outdoor benches and some seating on the green across from the parking lot out front. Best ice cream ever and they have so many unique flavors. To put this into perspective, I have been to grassroots 3 times in probably a week. The first time I went I got the avocado and goat cheese blackberry. I then got a pint of goat cheese blackberry to bring home. Fast forward to the next day when that had been eaten. We go on the grassroots website to see the hours. Holy Jesus you can order ice cream by the gallon. I now have a gallon of goat cheese blackberry ice cream in my freezer. But then I later went back with my boyfriend and his friend because his friend had never heard of the place and well that's a sin, so we went back. I got the violet ice cream this time. Also amazing. Can't wait to see the new flavors in the future. Will definitely order anything I absolutely love online. They sell 1.3 and 3 gallon containers and they have sooo many flavors listed. You pre pay for it so to pick it up just go to the counter and one of the associates will go get your box of ice cream and hand it to you and then you go on your merry way. Grassroots has smartly expanded its space in Granby center to accommodate its increasing popularity. I hope that the owners expanded in a fiscally smart way, because I'd hate to see Grassroots miss the mark. It's ice cream is delicious, no doubt. Fresh ingredients, no icing or "old," off-tasting ice cream is a start. What makes Grassroots such fun is the changing menu. You can go traditional with a dark chocolate concoction or the delightful pistachio or mint chocolate chip - but it is the unique flavors that pop up that are worth the cost. Combinations with ginger, lemongrass, citrus, herbs (like lavender) make for a fun change of pace. My wish is that the "kids" size was a little less expensive (it is just two scoops), and that they had a kids sundae. I'd pass in general on the sundaes because while they have fresh whipped cream, the toppings are ordinary and taste pre-made. I'd extend the uniqueness of some of the ice cream flavors to the toppings (a dark chocolate raspberry sauce, an almond & peanut butter sauce, chocolate-chile pepper option would be fun, etc.). The unique ice cream flavors though tend to get lost in the sundaes and shakes, and without intriguing or homemade-tasting sauces, the more pricey sundaes and shakes are generally not worth it. It is worth the stop (and calories), and the value is a bit lower than other nearby ice-cream parlors, but the unique and fresh flavors make Grassroots a family favorite. Great location too - right next to a park, easy parking, in Granby center, and good service make Grassroots an excellent choice... if you don't want to go a tad further to the Gran-val Scoop. UPDATED: In mulling over my love of ice-cream places, I updated my review to 5 stars. I'm not sure how I forgot to review Grass Roots, but I did. Nevertheless, it's so consistently wonderful that it deserves all the praise it receives on Yelp and other places. Grass Roots rotates a number of flavors, but strikes a nice balance between classics and more unique flavors. If you're not so adventurous, you can stick with choices like vanilla, Rocky Road or cookie dough. If you want something more unique, you can have options like goat cheese and blackberry (my favorite), biscotti, midnight snack (which has potato chips in it), and flavors with ingredients such as cardamom and rosemary. Of course, creativity means nothing without taste. Everything here is delicious, from the ice cream itself to the ingredients. Plus the staff is very helpful and friendly. Even on a busy weekend they move through the line quickly and with a smile. Parking can be a little tough if they're packed. There is a park across the street if you want to eat outdoors. Overall, this is my favorite ice cream in Connecticut and a definite recommend. read more

I came here on a busy weekend. The line wrapped around to the outside, which seemed on par since the weather was nice. The staff was super friendly and let us sample as much ice cream as we wanted even though it was busy. I appreciated their attentiveness. Onto the flavors, which they have a HUGE menu of ice creams. I'm talking over 30 flavors. There are the standard flavors (think strawberry, chocolate and vanilla) but also fun flavors with less common ingredients such as goat cheese, lavender and sage. I ended up getting Chai Tea and Toasted Almond Cookie Crumble. Both were excellent! If Grassroots were closer, I would probably be there all the time. I highly recommend it. read more

I'd never heard of this place but it popped up randomly on my Instagram and given that I have nothing but time on my hands right now I decided to make the 40 minute drive to check it out and it was definitely worth it. I know they're relatively new to the food game, but they definitely know what they're doing. I'm a poutine enthusiast and traditionalist so if I'm being honest they're stretching the definition of poutine, even if it is a reimagining of it, but I don't care. It was just flat out delicious. The waffle fries were perfectly crispy and the toppings melded together for a delicious bite. For ice cream I got blood orange chocolate chip and lemon poppy seed cake. I tried the blood orange chocolate chip one and it's fantastic. I thought it might be a sherbet (which I have no problem with) but it wasn't. It's just good ice cream. It took a lot of self control not to sit and eat the entire pint right then. The lemon poppy seed cake is for my girlfriend so we'll try it this weekend.
