No, just NO! The woman who cut my hair, I think her name was Laura, was just plain mean and grumpy...

This place is a joke! I called a week in advance to schedule an appointment with Karen for hair coloring. A woman answered the phone ( with a Russian accent) I told her I was calling a week ahead of time to schedule an appointment with Karen for hair coloring. She said "no problem". I asked her if I should call back to speak with Karen regarding the appointment. The woman said it was not necessary as she would schedule it in, in Karen's schedule. I showed up the following week at 2pm for my scheduled appointment. Not only did Karen show up 30 minutes late but had bumped into her friends on her way in. As she was told by a co -worker that I had been waiting on her , she looked at me confused. I advised her I had a 2pm appointment for hair coloring with her. She looked at my hair with disappointment and said "that would take hours and hours and hours" to do. (My hair is up to the middle of my back). She said I can't do that right now I have appointments. I asked her "Well what can u do?". She said "highlights but not dye your hair". Omg. I told her that is not what I wanted and informer her I had called a week in advance to scheduled an appointment with her for hair coloring. She looked at me with a snobby look and said she was not aware of any appointment and then began signaling to her friends ( the same ones she had bumped into on her way in) that she can now cut their hair. She then told me to go ask one of the other stylist to do my hair since they may have extra time . This was completely rude of Karen, she completely brushed me off to somebody else in order to calm her anxiety of cutting her friends hair (who were drop ins by the way). Mind u, I drove in a storm, circled to find parking, and left my son with a sitter to get to the appointment on time. I then again informed her I had a 2pm appointment and she looked at me and said "had no clue" and called her friends over to her chair. What kind of place is this! Not only was she so rude and brushed me off to another stylist but ran to make time for her friends. This is not a business. Whoever is answering the phones does not know what they are doing. They can not tell people they are scheduled in then not schedule them. This place is a joke and I vowed to never returned to this place again. Karen is a completely rude stylist. Save your money people, pick a respectful professional place instead! read more

Never coming back here again. Laura was a know it all, she was way too rough, didn't look me in the eye, she was extremely grumpy and annoyed at my questions. She rushed through my hair cut and threw globs of gel on it without asking. Then when I asked her to fix it, she buzzed ALL of the sides off and way too high. It's officially the worst haircut I've ever had. She made me look like Butters from South Park. Now I need someone to fix it. read more

I won't go here again - i am the sort that I do not get a hair cut unless I have either adequate photo's or am able to describe exactly what I want. Last time I went I had photo's. I walked out with absolutely NOTHING like the photo's. Never again will I go here. Now my husband likes the place but kind of hard to go wrong with a number 2 and 4 blades. My opinion - you are better off paying a little bit more and going to Stonestown (Regis Salon - they are really really good!). Sometimes it's just not worth it to save money. read more

This morning, I had beautiful, shoulder-length hair. I came here and asked for 3-4 inches trimmed and some layering with no bangs - basically a trim. The stylist asked how short she could go and I indicated just past my jawline. She told me she wouldn't go nearly that short. To make a long story short, I am sitting at my computer right now with hair that is about an inch long with bangs that are about 4 inches long. I have been wavering between shock and tears all day, and I feel violated. I swear I am not exaggerating. The whole thing happened so fast, it was too late for me to stop what was happening. During the cut, the stylist was complaining about her coworkers, how she is afraid of getting in trouble and other personal problems. There is nothing wrong with having issues, but she seemed to have taken them out on my head. I was too frightened and in shock at the time to do anything but get out of the place quickly after it was over. read more

I've been getting my hair cut by Karen for 20 years and can't believe how patient she's been with unreasonable clients who go off on her and write bad things on Yelp about her. I guess it's just people looking to cause trouble, because I've always found Karen to do an excellent job and be most accomodating to my needs and fit me into her schedule. Normal people don't even go on Yelp, let alone 3 paragraph tirades, which is why I rarely write reviews, but felt that I had to support Karen. So don't pay too much attention to some of the crazy reviews, because they seem to be blown out of proportion. I highly recommend Karen, besides doing a great cut, she's alot of fun. She really deserves much more praise than she gets working there. read more

Thank you, Karen, for one of the best haircuts I've had in a loooong time. I usually dread getting haircuts because I have Curly Asian Hair and it seemed NOBODY ever knew what to do with me. The key words I use are "layers", "chunky", and "cowlicks" - and previous stylists never seemed to get exactly what I wanted, even when I brought in pictures. Karen was patient, talked me through the process, and kept checking in with me throughout the cut to make sure she was on the right track. And for the first time in EVER, the cut was EXACTLY what I wished for. I also like that the salon accepts walk-ins and the cuts are inexpensive ($20!), perfect for a busy mom like me. read more

So let me give a quick backstory before explaining my low rating. I was 3 days from leaving the city to head back to school (where i have no knowledge of hair salons) and my hair was in desperate need of a cut. I couldn't reach my regular stylist because of the holidays so i decided to go here based on the fact that my friend went here and i always see them busy. I walked in got a smile from one of the ladies and awkwardly sat down unsure of what to do. After she finished her appointment she came up to the desk (that has no assistant or anything) and abruptly asked for my name. She swept up her area and waved me over. There was a man who had been there longer than I had so I wasnt sure who she was waving to. He walked towards her so i assumed it was he who she was motioning to but once he continued on past her she, obviously annoyed with me, called me over. I sat down in the chair extremely nervous having never ventured from my other stylist in 6 years (obviously, it wasnt my best move). I told her I had a picture of what i was hoping for and i pulled it out to show her. The picture was the best but I thought it would definitely be enough to work from. She seemed very frustrated because she couldnt see exactly how long my hair was in the picture. She had me show her how long i wanted it and as soon as i showed her she just cut all the rest off.. I was terrified. She asked to see the picture again, so i showed her (after she yelled at me for pulling my arm out from under the smock) and she said she could do it. So she starts cutting and starts with my bangs. She just grabbed some of my hair and chopped it off.. i was assuming she would go back to fix it later. As she was cutting the rest of it I was terrified by how much hair i saw hitting the floor. Whenever she would run accross a knot in my hair (which she hadnt brushed before starting) she would just cut it out. I admit, my hair knots easily but I had been out all day in the wind and she hadnt even tried to brush it out before she started. The cut went on much longer than I expected. When she finally finished I was really unsure how I felt. I paid and even left a small tip but couldnt get to a mirror fast enough to evaluate the damage. When i finally got home i saw she had taken my hair a good 4-5 inches shorter than I had asked and had completely screwed up my bangs. Ive been working to figure out exactly what she did to them ever since and I still cant figure it out. My pictuer clearly showed a side swooped bang that wasn't particularly thick and she did nothing like that. She gave me a thick bang that is some awkward combo of a straight cut and a swoop. When i comb them out and hold them straight down the cut line resembles a rainbow curve. My picture had layer that swooped in towards my face so instead of giving my layer that would do that naturally she decided to cut all the hair around my face in a choppy manner. There are chunks of hair at awkward lengths (too short to tie back, too long to be bangs) that just don't fit in anywhere. I went in with hair that easily went halfway down my back (5'9" here) and left with barely longer than shoulder length hair with a terrible set of bangs. I hate what she did but the worst part is, I can't even see how to try and fix it. I will never go back. - A completely unsatisfied customer. read more

I go here for a basic hair cut with layering in the back. I have been going to Frances for several years now. She is always pleasant, and after several cuts she knows what works for me, and has never tried to talk me into anything I haven't asked for. Her cutting is precise and I am always pleased with both the cut and highlighting jobs she has done. When people complain because the stylist won't cut their hair after 7:30, I think perhaps they are the rude ones. The stylists also have lives outside of their jobs. Maybe they have been on their feet for 8 hours. Maybe you should know the rules in advance. read more

I have been going here for awhile - good haircuts at a very reasonable price, especially these days. It never mattered to me which person there cut my hair it always comes out looking good, and everyone that works there is friendly and listens to what you want done, nothing worse than a bad haircut! The last two times I have gone to Grateful Head, I have had the pleasure of having Karen be my stylist and she is wonderful!, really the first times, I have ever had a haircut where I immediately get compliments. This place could easily charge double, I am glad they do not. read more

I don't expect any hair dresser to get my hair right the first time, but I do expect them to talk with me over time and provide suggestions on what/how I should get it cut. Francis does that for me. I also like the location, other businesses are around and parking is usually accessible. If the wait is long, I can grab a Starbucks across the street, but I usually don't have to wait more than 10-15 minutes. You want a place that is busy, but not tooo busy right? Especially since they don't take appointments...which is the only reason I won't give that 5th star. I'd like to be rewarded for my loyalty and have the opportunity to schedule an appt. read more

Walked in, no appointment and seated within the minute! Great customer service!!!!! I got my bangs cut ($7) and the lady was super nice! I am very particular about how I like my bangs cut and she was understanding and worked with me to achieve the look I was going for. She was even nice enough to blow dry it and make sure it was to my liking. I will definitely be back!!!! read more

If you want consistency you will do well here. I am Linda's client and though my hair takes a long time to do, she is always accomodating with my schedule and does a good job each time. Not quite confident in their ability to cut hair. Much like the haircut they gave me, the quality was undercut and uneven. Imagine, if you will, the appearance of hair that looks like Fraggle Rock puppet. I forget the name, the impostor of a stylist, but in all seriousness one requires glasses. I kid you not, something Hollis (part of her name I believe) needed glasses to see a blunt and simple hairstyle on my smart phone. She somehow managed to make a mullet under cut, which is detrimentally fascinating at my $20's worth expense, but that is not the point. Not recommended this "salon" for a cut as basic as the short on the sides and back, with a trim in the front. read more

OK, I can't believe I haven't written a review about this place before but I drove past it yesterday and it jogged my memory...After first moving here last summer I needed to get a hair cut so I thought I'd try some place I could walk to and that had decent prices. Never again! I will always pay more to have someone not f-up my hair! All I wanted was a pretty basic cut, nothing fancy, and some how this lady managed to cut uneven layers that weren't straight! First visit: Nice Asian lady. Decent men's haircut. No wait, reasonable price. MAJOR EDIT / second visit: Worst. Haircut. Ever. Not-so-nice white lady. Took all of five minutes for her to shave off everything on one side with the clippers but stop about an inch lower on the other side. I dropped my jaw in horror when I put my glasses back on, but she just rumpled my hair around and said, "Oh, it'll be fine." I was in the chair for less than 5 minutes. I look like an escaped mental patient now, two days before a big sales presentation. I'm going to have to wear a hat for weeks. And I ain't even picky about my haircuts. Didn't even so much as dust the hair off my shoulders. Sideburns uneven, missed a patch on the nape of my neck altogether, etc etc. My paper shredder would have done just as good a job and would have been more pleasant and considerate. To top it all off, she threw my new phone on the floor when she suddenly yanked my apron off. No apology -- she actually insinuated that it had been my fault. MAJOR EDIT EDIT: I went back the next day for a refund, indignant, after having friends verify that I looked a bit, um, unbalanced. Nice Asian lady greeted me and said she could blend / fix the disaster under my hat. And you know what? She did! It's shorter than I would have liked, but I can face the world hatless now. read more

I started getting my haircuts here last year from Ann and ever since, she's done a great job. Lots of stylists don't listen to what I want and try to give me something they consider "trendy" or popular with other women. But Ann listened to everything I asked for and made sure that I was happy with my haircut, she's also very nice and won't try to talk you into a different cut. I even ask for her opinion so she can tweak the cut a little to make it better. And the price isn't bad for the type of service she gives you. The last time I came here, the price for a haircut rose up to $18 but I think that's still a good deal. read more

I have a short pixie style cut. This means I have to get my hair cut often and I need a not so expensive place to get it cut. After searching many places for around 30 bucks, I decided to try out the Grateful Head and I'm glad I did. Sure it's a 16 dollar hair cut, but it looks like I paid much, much more for it. I don't usually like to give bad reviews, but I feel that this needs to be said. This place needs to learn the most basic tenet for a service business: CUSTOMER SERVICE! I walked in today, only needing a product to treat my dry scalp. When I walked in, one of the stylists made eye contact with me and faintly smiled. I said hello, but nothing was said back to me. There were only two stylists, and no one at the front desk. I walked over to the product shelves and started examining bottles to see if they had what I needed. Not once did any of the stylists acknowledge that I was there, or ask if I needed help (or if they could help me). After a few minutes, I walked out. But before I did I said, "Thanks for your help." I will never go back there, and I would recommend that you go somewhere else that actually knows what customer service looks like. read more

I have been getting my haircuts here for several years. The price is reasonable, the staff friendly, and the location is right near MUNI. Parking can be a little hard but there is street parking on side streets. Quan (pounced like Juan) was excellent and I asked for her every time, but she retired recently and I haven't had enough time to give the other staff an evaluation based on multiple haircuts. KAREN is the greatest! ...and I'm not an easy girl to please...she has been cutting and coloring my hair for 10 yrs. because she always makes me look like a million bucks (at a reasonable price). The color looks very natural (I'm amazed at how many people assume that my color is my own!) and the cut works well with my waves. I get compliments all the time. some background info: i have a completely irrational aversion to getting proper haircuts. i'd almost rather walk myself up to the dentist's chair than the haircut chair. almost. It'd now been longer than I care to admit since I'd paid for a haircut. I usually take matters into my own hands, in front of the bathroom mirror, hovering over the wastebasket, scissors in hand. The Grateful Head is close to school and i figured that the best way to get me into the chair was to sneak my haircut in between classes. In and out; less time to chicken out. They take walk-ins, and on a thursday morning, I waited maybe 5 minutes before Ann walked over to tell me she was ready for me. She listened to what I wanted, gave me a couple of different options and suggestions, and proceeded to cut my hair. She was friendly, fast, efficient, and didn't fuss too much over my hair the way some stylists do. Perfect. I was in and out of there before my parking meter expired. I was however expecting to hear Bob jamming on the guitar my hair got cut. No such luck. Maybe next time, cause I'll definitely be back here next time I decide to warm up to the chair. read more

I would go here even if it wasn't in my neighborhood. I've worked with 2 stylists here, Laura and Ann. Both provide professional service with good results. I've been working with Ann for a couple of years now. She is attentive to my requests, remembers what we discussed about my goals/concerns and checks in with them the next time I see her. She is a skilled provider in that she seems to know how and when to give guidance, while able to respect the fact that you may not want any. Yes the price is reasonable. Yes, this is a non-pretentious salon. Yes, it is within walking distance of my apartment. Yes, I have gotten the most compliments on my hair from very diverse people since I've been working with Ann. But the most important thing is Ann provides very good service in all ways that makes me feel good when I walk out their front door. read more

I'm new to the city, and I was looking for a place to get a cheap haircut. Super cuts is a block down and a dollar less, but I decided to splurge and go with what I thought was going to end up a decent haircut. I was WRONG! I just needed a trim to even everything out. I asked for half an inch off. The lady grabbed clippers, NOT SCISSORS and proceeded to annihilate my locks before I could say otherwise. Very frustrating to pay money for something I could have done to myself for free with safety scissors. read more

The place is clean, professional, and comfortable (if a bit sterile). I was happy with the haircuts I was given and their rates, while not cheap, were fair. All of the above was true for my most recent visit, except I wasn't satisfied with my haircut. I asked her to give me a good trim and shorten my beard a bit. Instead, she essentially just cut around my ears and shortened my bangs (I had to ask her to do the latter), leaving the hair on the crown of my head virtually untouched. Maybe I should have been more specific or asked her to keep cutting, but I really didn't notice how long she had left my hair until I left the shop and I felt it in the breeze. It didn't feel like I got a full haircut. Correct me if I'm wrong, but a 'good trim' implies shortening all your hair, not just the sections the barber feels like cutting. In any case, I didn't have this problem during my prior visits. Some of the stylists here really are better than the others, so if you find someone you like, stick with them. Also, make sure you're fully satisfied with your haircut before leaving and be ready to call out the barber if you feel he/she did a sub-par job. I'll give this place another chance, but if I leave unhappy again, I won't be coming back. read more

I've been getting haircuts from Linda for 20 years, including the last ten years or so that she has been at the Grateful Head. Linda cuts my hair better than anyone ever has. It just plain looks better, and my family and friends tell me that all the time. I have never had a bad haircut form her. It has always been exactly the way I want it. As I've grown older, some gray is creeping in, so Linda added some color, and that always comes out perfect as well. When Linda has been away from work on vacation or personal time off, Frances has cut my hair and colored it, and she does it every bit as good as Linda. I have never used Laura or Karen, but they have been working at the Grateful Head as long as I have been going there, and each of them has a large number of very satisfied returning clients. In all the years I have been going to the Grateful Head, I have never been present when a client complained about anything. I am really surprised to read the negative reviews here, because I sure haven't heard anything like that. Finally, the stylists are all hospitable and friendly, and the place is modern, and clean as a whistle. It might be a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. It is the only place I would ever recommend to someone who wants a good.haircut. read more

I had considerably long hair which I'd been growing out for about nine months and wanted it shorter. I showed them a picutre that looked good in a style manual... and ended up walking out of the salon with a short-on-bottom, long-on-top haircut commonly worn by middle-aged lesbians and ten-year-old boys that looked nothing like the haircut I pointed at I will never go back here. They completely messed up my hair. I'm going to my regular barber tomorrow in an attempt to fix the attrocity that is my current haircut. This will leave my hair much shorter than I had ever intended... but I guess that's better than walking around looking like a doofus for a few weeks. ::shudders:: Don't let the catchy name decieve you; this place is every bit as bad as Supercuts! read more

If i could do NO Star i would. I don't know which person cut my hair but it was hands down the worst haircut of my life. After wetting it, she didn't even bother to comb it all the way out before she started cutting. I said i'd like some layers around my face--starting at my cheekbones. Instead, I got straight across bangs in the middle of my forehead! When i said i was looking for more layers and volume in the back and on the sides she simply picked up a few strands at a time and just randomly cut into them... As i frantically ran my fingers thru my hair upon exiting the place, i came upon balled up clumps of hair in the back that obviously hadn't ever even been combed out during the whole process!! I've NEVER written a review on Yelp until now. But this disaster and the fabulous woman (Amy at Maiden Lane) who fixed it warranted reviews. read more

I really don't want to write a negative review of someone's livelihood but I feel an obligation to warn others. I had a very upsetting experience with Laura. She did not seem to listen and became unreasonably angry when I tried to describe what I wanted. She raised her voice and berated me. She cut my very hair short when I basically asked for a trim. Haircuts are supposed to be relaxing even if not perfect. This was a disturbing, unprofessional experience I would not want someone else to have. read more

Daisy!!!!!!!! Daisy is SO AMAZING!!!!!!! I have been going to Grateful Head for years and have sat with most of the stylists and have always been happy with my cuts but after seeing Daisy I always request her. #1 I let her do what she wants BECAUSE she ALWAYS makes my hair so CUTE!!! She has an incredible eye for styling and everyone compliments my cut. #2 She remembered by name, my wife's name, asks us about our trips etc. after the first time I sat for her. #3 She is so funny! I enjoy the small talk and hearing about her tails, she sometimes has to wait because I am giggling so much. #4 Her attention to detail! She has been giving me a hard part on both sides for a few months which always comes out PERFECT!!! I LOVE my cuts when I walk out and I LOVE them after they grow out. Best cut in SF!!
