I have been there and planning on returning soon. The liver and onions are excellent and sides are cooked the Southere style with the southern taste, which are great. I have read some of the negative reviews and have not had a bad experience there. If you are expecting 5 star upscale restaurant food, pricing, and service then you need to go to the Ritz, not a small scale country style food restaurant. I hadn't thought of reviewing this restaurant but my return was as unpleasant as my first visit. I'll get to the atmosphere later in this review. Our second visit started out questionable with the parking lot unwalkable cause of the resent bad weather. Rain puddles and moon craters aplenty. Going in seemed awkward having the diners look at you because we brought in a rush of cold air. Everyone there was eating with thier coats on. Alot of restaurants have a tent breeze way but not here. One of the waitress gave a beeper and told us we could either wait out side or in our cars. It was cold that day. That wasn't a great option. My meal was a questionable experience. Once handed our menus they appeared dirty and manhandled. My last visit the rolls that were giving out weren't' bake at all. This visit the same way. Gummy at first not fully baked and if not eating right away hard as a rock. Thats the second time it was severed like that. I ordered the chicken strips. 4 in all. Not great. When I woke up the next day I was wondering WHY the roof of my mouth was torn up. This tells me that the breading was old and heated up. Look not every place can be like Chick Fill A. I get it. . The atmosphere was kind of depressing. The lighting was all over the place. Bright light bulbs not matching. LED's with regular bulbs. The first time I was there I thought that the waitress wearing rip jeans was maybe a fluke but there she is again. The same jeans. The rag she used to wipe the tables matched her pants. Very off-putting to say the least. I would think this place is popular causet there is'nt much dinning in that area of Calabash. I'm never going back. A sure sign of a place that is questionable the sign out front is awash with green mold. A good power wash could help that. read more

Heard about Gravy from a friend and she was spot on with her recommendation. Loved the Southern plate we had for lunch. Mondays special is turkey and gravy with stuffing. You get two sides and hush puppies or a roll. I tried the sweet potato casserole that was not too sweet but just right. The turkey and gravy were delish and the serving was enough for two meals. I also tried the broccoli casserole that was loaded with goodness. Many folks were getting the peach cobbler as a side and it looked darn good. Our server was so nice and she brought an extra pitcher of iced tea/lemonade for our table. I can't wait to go back and try another special as they offer something different daily but also have lots of options. Go hungry and enjoy. It's a cute place inside too. read more

We decided to give this place a try, wasn't a fan of the food I received a salad with wilted brown lettuce, my child's fries were really dried and crunchy. We waited a really long time to get in and the waited for a waitress at the table for almost 10 mins. My husband said the mashed potatoes were good though! Everything is mostly fried here also, they don't have separate fryers so with a shellfish allergy I couldn't eat much. And it was disappointing to receive the salad I did. read more

This a wonderful cozy cabin that the locals go to for reasonably priced down home cooking. The Smothered chicken Breast was delicious with a white seasoned gravy. The calabash fried shrimp were a nice size and they were flavorful. We loved the homemade Mac & Cheese & peach cobbler sides. We got their special carrot cake to go. The service was very friendly. We went to Gravy three times in a 2 week period. The first time we went was on a Monday and we were impressed. We went back on a Thursday and a Saturday. The food was great on Monday. The fish was good the first two visits. We were disappointed with the other dishes on Thursday and Saturday. Due to the inconsistency, we will probably try again on a Monday. Great comfort food venue. 30 minute wait on a weeknight was worth every second. Just a simple dining room, sweet and attentive waitresses and the food, man oh man the food. Prices were very reasonable, portions were great and the taste is just simply country good. Went here a few weeks ago. Warning: the overwhelming smell of hush puppies that u are subjected to outside will not let u leave. We went on a busy afternoon at the dinner hour. We got in in about 30-45 minutes and were not disappointed. It was clean but a little cramped. I ordered the calabash style flounder platter that comes with two sides, hush puppies or a roll and iced tea for a ridiculously low price. In about 15-20 minutes, my daughter and I were served a huge amount of food. I think I ordered the slaw, hush puppies and peach cobbler. All were good, but the flounder and hush puppies were great. Even better was the tartar sauce that came with it. I look forward to going back but maybe off season or at a less busy time. read more

Been coming here for almost 15 years. Comfort food at its best. I always get the Liver and Onions and it's outstanding. Fast service. However the last few years it has been going down hill. Fried shrimp, hush puppies, cheesy ranch potatoes (who knew), and a fried steak, mashed with gravy and corn. Corn should always be this sweet and buttery. A side of fried flounder to try. The fried foods were crispy and delicate, perfectly seasoned and fried golden brown. For dessert a caramel pecan bread pudding and chocolate delight. When you arrive at the Gravy Southern Eatery restaurant be prepared to park in the gravel parking lot if you arrive during peak business hours. Be aware that some vehicle (pickup truck) may be blocking your approach to a parking space because nothing is lined off in the gravel lot to indicate exactly where or how to park in that area. If you are someone that always keeps your car immaculately clean both inside and out, then save yourself the trip, because you will get dirty entering the parking lot. In addition, trucks are apparently allowed to loiter in the center of the gravel parking lot, making it difficult to park. The restaurant on the inside has country charm, but the wait staff is not as attentive to customers that are not regulars. The food is ok, based on just one visit to this restaurant. I normally love homemade Turkey and Dressing, but I now know I don't prefer to have my meat swimming in the gravy prior to placement on the plate. I have always ladled the gravy on top of the meat and add slightly more if needed. Meat swimming in gravy, is just not my cup of tea! The dressing, broccoli salad, sweet potato casserole, hush puppies and the peach cobbler that my wife let me taste were all good. I would return and try another entree from the Gravy Southern Eatery menu. I would suggest that the wait staff in the future check with the customer to make sure everything is ok with the customers meal snd regularly check on the customer if refills on drinks are needed. This is definitely not our best value restaurant in the area. Would be nice to see them add complimentary iced tea to the lunch specials or a small surcharge for a soda. read more

We've enjoyed Gravy's turkey and crab cake dinners which were both delicious. There's a reason that you always have to wait a bit to get a table almost any time of day. It's never a very long wait so don't let that sway your decision to go, you meet a lot of very nice people. The food is very good quality and in abundance. I was surprised with the amount of crab meat in the crab cakes; they were delicious and filling. The turkey dinner is perfect comfort food. The many side dishes to choose from are great; try the peach cobbler. Gravy will now be a weekly stop for my husband and I. The food is fantastic and the price is perfect. read more

A friend introduced us to this out-of-way-place. Great food! I had the country-fried steak with milk gravy. It was tender with no gristle. The vegetables were well-prepared, southern style. The service was friendly. If you're looking for ambiance, go somewhere else. This is a small country diner. It appeared that most of the people there were locals. My wife and I moved away several years ago, but aways spoke about returning someday and having some meals at Gravy's (our favorite seafood restaurant). Today, we finally returned and I ordered their seafood platter with choices of shrimp and scallops. Our orders were brought to us shortly and it was difficult to differentiate between the shrimp and scallops. The shrimp were small popcorn size and breaded so they could pass for scallops, In actuality, I was able to identify (4) scallops and ((10) popcorn schrimp. When we were living here, this would have never happened. Our server brought our meals and never returned to see if we wanted more to drink or were satisfied with our meals.
