A friend introduced us to this out-of-way-place. Great food! I had the country-fried steak with milk gravy. It was tender with no gristle. The vegetables were well-prepared, southern style. We drive by this place all the time and it is always packed - now I know why! The food is so good. Real country cooking. Lots of different choices on the menu and great specials. Per recommendation of a local, we checked out Gravy for its crab cakes. NOTE- the crab cakes are only available on Fridays! They were really good! Lightly breaded, with big lumps of crab! They come with 2 sides (lots of choices there) and a dipping sauce (I opted for the tartar sauce). For dessert we tried their peach cobbler (yum!) and their pecan bread pudding (meh). Spouse said he liked this place the best because our bill was only $28. A few things- Go early! We went at 5 (I'm becoming a fan of the early bird dinners), before the rush started. If you love Maryland style crab cakes, then I would pass! Wish cakes.... Wish there was more crab, and the traditional flavor is not there. I had mashed potatoes with gravy as a side...I was hoping for real mashed potatoes and real gravy, but got instant mashed & canned gravy. Had peach cobbler for dessert, which was nicely warmed, but way too sweet. Wasn't too thrilled with the hush puppies, either. Was expecting something yummy with honey butter. They serve an imitation spread Service & attitude was good! So, that's why I give them 2 stars. Won't be back, unfortunately. I eat here with my co-workers about 3 times per month. If you are looking for a great service experience, this isn't it. The place is operated by a brother and sister, he in the kitchen, she is a waitress; neither has any personality nor do they act like they could care if you returned. Never a smile from either have I seen. The food is ok, not over the top by any means. Today one of us ordered the hamburger steak, which the menu says always will come well done. It was raw and had to be sent back. Got the same meat back, microwaved without an apology of any sort. What really got us today was the attitude and the actions of the female owner/waitress. There are literally 10 electrical outlets that run across the long wall, about a foot and a half above the tables. All have child protectors on them. I pulled one and plugged in my phone to charge it. About 5 minutes later the owner/manager came over and very curtly stated, "would you unplug that charger, that is why we put child protectors on it." I said, "can't I charge my phone?" She said no, that they don't allow it. Period, not even nicely explaining anything. Well, that's it for you Gravy...We spend about $100 a month here, but no more... Shame on you, for what a 15 cent phone charge? Terrible way to run a restaurant. read more

Don't miss this terrific mom and pop restaurant not near the other Calabash restaurants. The food was exceptional as was the service. My scallops and shrimp were some of the best I have ever eaten. While vacationing in sunset we had already decided we would not be cooking and asked friends for restaurant suggestions while here. Gravy was one of the best suggestions we received. Honestly we would 99.9% never revisit this place. My daughter order chicken fingers and wanted to substitute her French fries for a small side salad and it wasn't allowed so I ordered it additional $3.50 (brought her a place if iceberg lettuce and sliced tomato (I had to ask for cheese, she's a kid and doesn't eat green peppers)... Husband ordered grilled chops, lima beans and rice and he said it reminded him of hospital food! My turkey with dressing was probably the only decent thing they have. The potato salad taste like it's store bough right out of Walmart!!!! Peach cobbler taste as if it's frozen and old... DEFINITELY not a home cook southern meal I'm used to and I'm from Virginia! I would absolutely give this restaurant five stars if they would be a little bit more courteous to the people waiting outside. Put a pitcher of ice water out there and more fans. People that love this restaurant is waiting no less than 45 minutes in the direct heat to get in and eat. As good as it was, I will not wait in that brutal heat again. It's just not worth that wait. Got too busy to think about cooking so went down the road to Gravy for supper. We are new in the area and it was always busy when we would drive by. Sat quickly and southern hospitality was certainly obvious. Lots of regulars, laughing and smiles. Ordered the calabash shrimp, hubby ordered the flounder. Both were delicious, cocktail sauce nice and spicy, sides were hot. Slaw was just right and fries were crispy. I prefer a sweeter puppy, he loved them. Southern charm, comfort food, but some strange hours. My family and I absolutely fell in love with this southern gem and will be back every time we visit the Calabash area. The scallops are so good they will make your pastor slap his mother! Just don't get there after 1900 because you will be pressed for time(They close a little early for me).
