I called with a general question about how fix my issue. The 1st time I called all I got in response was " bring it in" they never once ask about my computer. I was cut off before I could even finish my sentence. Feeling frustrated, I called back and a different person answered, thinking my experience will be better I started in with my issue. .. I explained EXACTLY WHAT I'M SEEING and he started telling me my "MY BLACK SCREEN ISSUE WAS A BLUE SCREEN ISSUE " I told him... no its a black screen and ...... he cuts me off and say "just bring it in" I asked if he was familiar with this type of error and he said yes it's an easy fix but could not give me any pointers.... They had my computer for a week to do a 30 minute repair. When I dropped off my tower, they assured me that it would be easy to figure out what was wrong and would call me soon. "Soon" is not a whole week later. I called after four days, they had no idea my computer was there! Said, " I'll find out and call you back", they never called. On day six I called again and they sounded irritated and told me again, "we will call you when it's done". I drove down to Gray Matter the next day to see for myself what was going on, they said it had been done two days ago! If they were busy and needed a week to fix my old computer, they should have said so when I first brought it in. I will not recommend Gray Matter Computing to others. Avoid these people at all cost! They do not stand behind what they sell! Bought a pc from them a couple months ago paid $450 for it. Had an issue with it on Monday called them an was informed the warranty is only ONE week! So I took it to Geak Squad an they found the issue in 10 min and I was on my way. Bait and switch . They tell you there no charge until they determine the problem and then they take your machine apart, tell you it has a "stripped screw" and make you pay to get it back...with the original problem AND stripped screws. read more

Sadly our dinosaur computer finally died. I was ready to purchase another on-line computer but Gray Matter suggested we give them a try so we did. Robbie did a wonderful job building us a new computer system specifically to meet our small business needs, one more powerful, more features for less money than the one I was contemplating. Upon arrival our new computer had a slight concern; the four fans inside were too noisy for me so I wasn't entirely happy. They immediately remedied the problem and transferred the inner components to a quieter tower and it was perfect! I absolutely love our new computer but more importantly the service was great. I took my lap top too Gray Matter on Feb. 5th 2018 and it was supposedly fixed on the 7th. So I tried to use my lap top and it was not fixed right; so I took it back on Tuesday the 20th... I had to pay 100.00 again when I picked it up. So I had to pay a total of 200.00 in less then 2 wks. I am not a happy person and wont be going back too this business ever again. My lap top was not fixed right the first time. How can a business do this too people. I am also calling the better business bureau on them. The person said that its like totaling a car and when u get it back, u wreck it again. What does a car have too do with a computer!!! I am a graphic designer and I use my computer on a daily basis, my windows profile decided to corrupt itself one day, I contacted Gray Matter and I spoke with Gary. This was the day before Thanksgiving right before they all wanted to leave for the holiday. He was very helpful with letting me know what he thought it would take to fix it and when he could get it back to me. He hit the time frame spot on, my machine was ready when he said it would be and runs fantastic now. My aunt is nearly 80 years old and she took her HP printer to this business to find out how to install a new ink cartridge. The employee showed her how to click the new cartridge in place and charged her $35 (she brought a new cartridge with her). Gray Matter Computing took advantage of my aunt and if this is the way they treat senior citizens they should be ashamed of themselves. read more

I call them sometimes to just a question or two and they are very polite and always answer to the best of their ability. I don't go anywhere else for my computing needs. read more

Was quoted $60 to look over my laptop to check a problem it was having. Returned to pick it up and was told there was no way to fix it except to buy a used one of the same model off eBay (about $600), swap some parts, and hope for the best. When I declined such an expensive experimental "repair," they handed me a bill for $210 !!!!! For What? I asked. Was told working on a laptop is difficult. If your job is so difficult.... then quote your charges accurately up front - thereby giving the customer an informed choice as to whether to continue with the service order. There is a huge difference between $60 and $210! Later learned that my computer was under a recall for the very problem for which it was taken in for service and all repairs were covered in a tech bulletin, along with an authorization form for getting the costs reimbursed. Seems that someone in the computer repair business would have found this information while doing their "extensive research" and "hard work." Total opportunist rip-off. Ironically, I would have used these guys to set up my business systems as I believe in keeping dollars local. However, it is almost impossible to do when treated this way on such a simple task as checking trouble on a laptop. This actually occurred a while back, yet I still shudder whenever driving past their storefront. *** Update *** Did not see the business response until today. Not helpful. They were not able to fix my grandmother's Apple TV and still charged her $95. I drove 3.5 hours from the bay and fixed it in 10 minutes. All that was needed was a full reset with the correct wifi credentials. I understand the reason for the charge to come out but I find it unethical to charge for failing to fix something. Only a refund and apology could correct this. read more

I recently called Gray Matter for an estimate on repairs for my 3-year-old HP laptop, knowing the fan was not working right (the laptop's last words), The price for getting the estimate was $40.00. I was also advised the $40.00 would be credited back toward the cost of actual repairs, if completed here. Darla, wrote up the order and asked for my username & password, which I provided. Robbie called me in 4 days to give me the bad news. Not only was the fan bad but the motherboard had overheated and was damaged as well. I went further in conversation with him, & he checked the price on a matching motherboard (if possible) + installation along with the new fan & installation of both. By this time we were up to possibly $350 - $400. I am on a tight budget & only paid $600 for it from home shopping. Robbie talked with me several times about my choices. They do have a couple of refurbished laptops for sale. (Refurbished is essentially "new insides" with a used shell, & they are $250 + ). He also asked me whether I wanted to bring in my portable hard drive or zip, or they could put the existing hard drive data (undamaged, hooray!!) into a case so I can download the info to what ever replacement I get (theirs or another). I had taken it into Best Buy & spoken with a kid, who must have been on his first day in the Geek Squad. He kept having to go ask someone else what to do next. I had asked for a new fan to be ordered, since the computer had told me that much. He took in the back room & I waited, only to be told that for $35.00 they could "send it to a repair service" to get an estimate. Silly me, I thought I HAD taken it to a repair service. I wasn't at all certain it would even GET to its destination. Gray Matter IS a repair service! I didn't have to drive to Chico 2 more trips then have to deal with a trainee again. Thank heaven! Third time in for this computer. I was happy with the first repair, thought I was happy with the second. Between the first and second repairs, this computer became a backup, used less than once a month. The second repair was six months ago to re-solder a loose joint on the video card, $160.00. Since that time the computer was booted up less than 10 times, and only on for an hour or so at a time (something they can easily verify). Last week it quit again, same symptoms as before. Turns out they had to re-solder the same joint, told me it was excessive heat, for another $160.00. Said that because it was over six months since they repaired it, another charge, never mind that the computer had only been rebooted less than 10 times. There is no way the computer got so hot that the joint failed - it had to have been a lousy job the first time. They still charged me full price, basically said tough, I can pay or they can put the computer back the way it was and I can go get it fixed elsewhere. (I also had to go back to the store and pick up my power cord.) I agree with the previous review, they do seem in disarray and disorganized. But they also won't stand by their work. I went to this business with a problem with my computer several years ago and felt repairs were done quickly and were fairly priced. I'm not sure what has changed since then, but I will never be a customer of theirs again. I took my laptop to them when it decided to stop working. I dropped it off expecting them to have it for a few days. It took them 2 weeks to replace my hard drive which was quoted on the phone as $60 and then turned out to be $100. I dropped it off 2 Fridays ago, I called last Thursday to get an update and had to explain who I was and what kind of laptop it was and they acted like they had no idea and put me on hold for 15 mins. When they finally located my laptop they informed me their supplier hadn't sent the hard drive yet without apology. I had to call again on this past Wednesday to ask if it was done yet and was told no, they were working on it, but that it would be done Thursday (yesterday). So I drove up to Paradise to get it and after 2 weeks and crappy customer service the bill if almost $300, they hadn't bothered to mention that they pay themselves $80 an hour in labor which I'm sorry seems totally absurd. It took them 2 weeks to spend 2 hours looking at my laptop and the bill is $300?! And without any apology for taking so long. I will never go there again. read more
