The gas tank on my Toyota RAV was shot. It turned into a rusty old sponge. The dealer wanted to charge me 700 bucks for a new one, not including labor. but the mechanic at Grays said, hey get one online and I'll install it for you. So I found the exact same gas tank on Amazon for 150 bucks and this guy installed it and it's amazing. Ali is an great mechanic. Love this place. read more

I didn't grow up here with a "family mechanic" so had to go with Trial and Error over the years, and often, it was an error. The best, honest auto repair place I've found is Gray's Auto on Lee Highway just past the on ramp for 66 West. It's a Texaco station today, used to be Shell I believe, but the people are the same. Rocky is the guy I usually deal with and he's always treated me fair. They post their hourly rate behind the register and it's around $70, which is not bad compared to many of the dealers and other places. I've let them work on my 1991 Miata and my 2001 BMW and I'm sure they have saved me money on both. One time, I had a flat tire, so used fix a flat and then drove it over there to replace the tire. I was adamant I wanted a new tire, but they talked me out of it and instead charged me $6 or $8 to plug the hole in my tire. I had never done this before, so was nervous about another flat, but am still driving on the tire 4 years later. read more

My car had a flat tire, and came in here after reading the Yelp reviews. I don't share the 2 others high opinions of this place. One guy rung me up at 10 bucks, before the manager came over and changed the total to 22.50. 20 bucks for the flat (prices just changed...uh huh...) and 2.50 for a new valve stem. Whatever. They fixed the flat tire, but didn't put my donut back on until I asked them to. The mechanic also told me initially that he wasn't sure he could remount the donut. What? It's a late 90's Japanese car. I told him I'd wait til he figured it out. I got my flat tire fixed fairly quickly (about 30-40 minutes), but I wouldn't go back again. Took my car in for my state inspection. It was quick even though there was a small line (not too bad for 2 days left of the month and being there 15 mins after it opened - M-F 8am to 5pm, and open on Sat. ? to 2pm). The bad news was that it failed. Got an estimate on the work that needed to be done = $120. That was reasonable to me (hate my car and thus really hate spending $ on it). Got a call though a few hours later though - the actual cost was going to be $500 since it was something more than originally thought. Since I hate my car, I said nope. That was too much money and I'd rather just get rid of my car then fix it. Then, I got a call after the business closed from the manager/owner(?) that he agreed that it was way too much $ to spend on a car & that he had fixed it for much less. My car was ready for pick-up. It came up to about $180, with his cheaper fix, and I was okay with the price to have my car for another year (even if I do hate it - it gets me around). When I picked it up, the owner/manager said that it was fixed, but that next year I may actually have to do something more to it since the underlying problem may still exist, but now I had a year to not spend that money. I just got a 12 month reprieve on finding a new car or deciding if I want to go car-free... read more

This place does a terrible job, do not go here!! So I have been to this place around three times now, the first time (I didn't know this at the time) all they had to do to fix the problem was pull my stuck hazard light out. It was tripping my indictors, but all they had to do was grease my hazard light and pull it out (it was only jammed a little). This job took literally 10 mins and they charged me $50, which in my opinion was way to much!! However at the time they made out to me that they did more than that and that is why it was $50..... The next time I went was because my check engine light was on, to be honest they gave me good service and I felt the price was okay for the work that was done. However Phann said that I might also need a catalytic converter but he will not know until I have driven the car for a few days. He said I will give you a good discount if you do come back I did need a catalytic converter so only 4 days later I went back and dealt with them again, I thought my car would be in safe hands. They told it will be around $600, I thought okay if the job needs to be done. I left my car with them and they call me at the end of the day basically saying that they won't finish the car till tomorrow but because I am a loyal customer they will give me a 10% discount. Anyway when I went to pick the car up the next day just before 6pm, the bill was over a $1000 which was not expected and no discount was given. I saw Phann and instead of remembering me, which i feel like he should have (this is the type of business where that is important) he just asked me to pay. I firstly said well can you explain the receipt to me and then I said I was told it would be around $600. He explained that he got someone else to call me to ask if I wanted the more expensive part because volkswagen cars benefit from that (apparently), which apparently I agreed to but I was not asked any questions like this, I was just asked if I wanted the work done. Then I mentioned the discount and he was like I can do 10% - I am still mad at this point he couldn't remember he said that to me. Then I try and use a credit card twice and both times it gets denied and then tried to use a debit card (with plenty of money on) and that also got denied around three times. So then this Phann drove me to safeway in my own car - felt really uncomfortable for me and said I could get money out from the suntrust ATM although my bank is bank of america. I said well do you plan on paying me back for the $3.75 to use the ATM and he said yes - but at the time I didn't think completely about how he was going to do that anyway. In the car he was 'lecturing' me about how my mirrors were situated because we are apparently the same height, I felt that was really patronising and just unnecessary because he wasn't a driving instructor. I have had lessons, I passed my test and I know how to drive. This really annoyed me, especially as when I finally drove the car later the mirrors were facing the floor. He was asking me really uncomfortable personal questions too. So not thinking straight at this point - because my bank has a $500 limit for ATM use in a day anyway - and not thinking that my card has been blocked by Bank of America (which it had) - I tried to get out some money - it wouldn't work because of the above. But still not clicking why it wasn't working I asked the guys at the suntrust bank to help. They said the ATM is telling me to contact my bank. Phann comes along and is being really pushing at this point, the Suntrust man suggests a credit advance - I asked how it works and he said that the bank will charge around 40% of what you are trying to get out - so 40% of $1000.... I instantly said no, literally said the word no. However Phann was stood next to me and he said we can do 20/20 - he said I have already offered you a discount so what is the big deal - he was way to pushy and rude in my opinion and again I said no. I suggested my husband pick me up and we can think of something. In the time it took us to walk out of safeway (30seconds) he asked me again two times if i wanted to do the 20/20 thing - that is TOO pushy in my opinion - ultimately I was going to pay (how was I going to get my car otherwise).... Also, if I had agreed to doing to 20% thing - my bill would have been more than it was in the first place - without the discount it was $1,110 and if I had done the 20% credit advance my total would have been $1,200.... I was not happy with how pushy he was being and with how it didn't even make sense once I thought about it later - in my opinion I should have only had to say no once. My husband ending up paying once I realised my card was blocked. I was mainly unhappy with how my payment issue was handled, how I was spoken to and how I was treated as a customer. I will never been going there again...lesson learnt read more

These people are honest, but have zero attention for detail. I went there about 4 times to get simple work done. They would do random things like leave tools and keys to other peoples cars in my car. The last time it took them over a week to figure out what was wrong with my car. When i came to pick it up it broke down the same day. When i picked it up they had not reattached the plastic on the bottom of my car that covers the engine. That took 40 minutes and it looked like they had broken parts of it. I've gone to Gray's for literally 12 years, ever since I moved to northern Virginia in 1999. They have always been honest, done good work, and been clear about what the work required. I've brought in old cars that they've saved -- literally -- from my having scrapped. I've also brought in our newer cars that they've done great work on as well. I've lived in Arlington for over two decades. Took two different cars here for state inspections (4 visits) before I figured out that this 'service' station ALWAYS find something wrong so they can fail the car and (hopefully) make some coin getting paid to fix it. I think the last straw was when they insisted on failing me because the after-market add-on halogen fog lamps on my car didn't work. I explained that I'd bought this car from a previous owner more than 6 years before, that the fog lamps had never functioned, and that the car had passed inspection (at other garages) 3 other times since I'd owned it. The 'service' mechanic/inspector then insisted that Virginia's rule is that 'all lights on a car must work' -- so he could either fail the car or charge me to fix the lights or to charge me to remove them. I left, went to another nearby service (notice the LACK of quotes!) station the next day, and the car passed inspection without any problem. I really don't see how this place remains in business. read more

These guys are crooks - had a warranty issue with my service. Turns out the battery was bad and despite the fact that it was under warranty these guys figured out a way to get the bill up to about the same as a new battery without a warranty, including $50 for labor to drop a new battery in the car! Probably took all of 2 minutes to drop the battery and connect the wires. Thanks for nothing! I will never go here again despite living locally. This is by far the worst auto service shop I've ever had to deal with. Back on May 25th of this year, my alternator to my car went out. I had the car towed to gray's shop, they charged 561.00 dollars to replace the alternator. When I receive my car back with the new alternator, I had three faults displaying on my dashboard showing an engine soon light, traction control light and slip light. It took another mechanic from another shop to figure out that my new alternator is wrong voltage and is rated lower than what my car requires. Of course Chris the mechanic is trying to deny he didn't put the wrong alternator, he also saw the faults on the car even after he replaced the alternator. I took the car back to them for warranty repair this morning and they are still in denial and are not making any effort to resolve this issue. I'm very upset at this point. I STRONGLY encourage everyone who reads this review not to bring your vehicle to Gray's auto shop no matter what, even if they are closet shop to you. They lack customer service skills and the manage is com artist and does not manage his crew. read more

I used to go here all the time and was very pleased, but in the last 2 years it seems to have gone downhill. Long waits for repairs and not delivered at time promised. Last year I had a very expensive repair on my 2003 Honda Odyssey air conditioning system, where they did a bunch of stuff that didn't fix the problem, and finally fixed it for over $1000. This took a week without my car and lots of excuses. Now several months later the thermostat they replaced (which wasn't the actual problem finally) doesn't work right again. So now I am going to Reinhart's across the street and so far have been pleased. read more

Brought my car here since it was close and I just needed an inspection and emissions test. They failed my emissions test due to a problem with my cooling system. While it was being repaired, they said another issue came up, while I am no car expert, I had no choice but to believe them. At one point, they called and asked if my car had ever overheated before... Nope, nIt was there for 5 days after I took it in for a regular inspection. I ended up paying over $800, and 3 months later, I find out that the issue was not fixed and I have to pay $500 to fix it elsewhere. read more

It's Shell station again, but still Gray's. Good for quick repair this week when my power steering failed right in front of the station! Labor and parts for a new belt seemed reasonable on this 12 year old Taurus. I waver between using Gray's and Cherrydale Motors right next door. Both have been in business in Cherrydale for a long time and do good repair work and fast & honest inspections. Great to have friendly & good mechanics in the neighborhood. read more

I've have had the worse experience ever. I took my car for a safety inspection. To begging the gentleman who checks the car was very rude and hostile , he gave me a hard time to start because my car already had a rejection ticket. I explained to him I have already taken cared of the Malfunctions previously projected. He failed me because I was missing a battery holder, I agreed to have this part serviced so I could move ahead and obtain my sticker. My car Remained standing in the front for almost an hour , once they began to work on my car the mechanic who was servicing my vehicle was also multitasking servicing additional customers who kept arriving. I stood right in front of my vehicle watching his work, It took him a total of 20 minutes to drill a hole and put together the new parts . They charged me for a full 1 hour of Labor 88$ plus parts, Even thought the person servicing my car split his time among 2 other vehicles during this hour. I spent 2 hours in total only to find out at the end they could not provide me with the sticker because the person who originally inspected my car clocked out. The other person in charge offered to check my car but threatened me that he could find additional problems if he checks it him self and suggested to come in the morning to obtain the sticker from the primary who checked me earlier. I explained to him I have nothing to fear , I already have taken my time to fix my car, but he continue avoiding the situation so they could move along. My car was the last one in the shop. I've had a nightmare this day, A simple safety inspection check out turned out into a 2 hours complete waste of time for nothing and to only return the next day. I will never return here, and I will advice anyone to find other alternatives. read more

I have been going to Gray's for a number of years with no problem. I went today for auto inspection. No problem with the mechanic. However, as I waited in the "office" for my car, I couldn't help but overhear the "boss" argue with a customer. One problem was that the customer could not understand the accent of "The Boss", who kept saying, "I AM THE BOSS HERE! I AM THE OWNER!:" (screaming). The customer just couldn't understand what he was saying and kept saying, "What?" (A worker came in once and "translated" for the customer at one point). At any rate, after the customer left (who was very patient, BTW), the owner started cussing and using very foul language. (Did he not care that I was sitting there?) Also, he barked orders to a female cashier--extremely disrespectful. I have another word for "THE BOSS! THE OWNER!", but I will leave it to your imagination. Needless to say, I'll go somewhere else for my auto inspection. (What happened to the very polite VN guy who used to do the inspections?!?) read more

For starters this is a shell station now. I normally go to the Exxon down the street for all of my inspections/repairs but I had to go here out of absolute necessity. Got a weird vibe through the whole process but my car was basically DOA so I had little choice. They replaced my starter among a few other issues and the final cost was $800 plus. No idea if the price was fair though it seemed high. The one star rating is due to the fact that after less than a year the starter went bad. The result of it simply being faulty. I was lucky to hobble my way into a mechanic closer to work who replaced it for another $400. When I called gray's they were very abrupt saying they only keep records for 3mo because after that there is no warranty whatsoever on ALL repairs and parts. Beware of this place at all cost. They are hard to find online and I think it's because they don't want a trail of bad reviews. read more

I love this place. I used to live in Arlington and occasionally went there for minor problems with my car. I have now lived in DC for 20 years and still go over there occasionally because I trust them. Today I went again. It's A Sunday and this morning I woke up and my tire was fairly flat. As it turns out I ran over a nail. I went to Merchants tire and Mr. tire. Both of them said I would have to leave the car and come back perhaps in four hours. The guy in charge at Mr. tire said why don't I go to grays and see if they can plug it. He said the guy is honest and he worked with him when he was 16 years old. Today Khan was there by himself , and despite the fact that there were a whole lot of people coming into get gas and some other people needing assistance, he quickly found the nail and did the plug. All with a great attitude. This is been my experience with all of the guys who seem to work there. It reminds me of a small town gas station where everyone wants to do a good job. I came here to get my car inspected and failed which was not the issue. They failed me and said that I was missing both headlight clips (the piece that holds the headlights in place) I checked myself and was missing only one and called them up and they insisted that I had lost both. These little pieces of metal are incredibly expensive for Mazda as you cant buy just one you need to buy an entire headlight set for the car about 270 dollars. I actually got underneath my car and was able to locate the missing one. They quoted at 60 bucks to reinstall it. I took it next door to Cherrydale Motors and they did it for free! Seriously if I had listened to them and just ordered the new headlights at 270 bucks a pop plus labor to instal I would have been out 600+ dollars. Not saying they were dishonest but they clearly were not concerned over what this would cost me. It certainly cost them a future customer. read more
