Exeter Motor Works is handsdown the best auto repair shop I've ever been too. I'm a person who…read morebasically went from place to place until I found Exeter Motor Works. All repair shops say "we've fixed your car". Exeter Motor works was the first repair shop where it was actually fixed! I've now been going there for at least 20 years. I was in the process of pricing new tires because they were getting wore out but the prices were out of control! I was recommended a shop in Dover and I reached out to what I thought was a price quote from them through the Yelp App. As it turns out I was sending out a blast to any shop that wanted to respond. One was Exeter Motor Works to which I used to take my SAAB 9000 to back in the late 90's. I moved further North so going there wasn't as convenient for me. However their shop was one who was presented to me so I called them and they said come on down. I got there an I was treated the exact same way as back in the 90's, graciously, friendly, warm and naturally without any phony "Hi how can I help". I let them know of my predicament and one of the mechanics came right into the greeting area and grabbed my key and started to fix the tire. I had mistakenly walked into the shop area and told them what was wrong so they already knew what was wrong and what to do! As I was getting checked in with my information and the guys were already fixing the tire, I informed the person at the counter I used to come here with my SAAB and the people were awesome! The lady assisting me (sorry my memory is bad) said "Yep you came in here with your SAAB last time in 1999!" I said OMG you still have that information in there, that's cool!" So we had already hit it off and we finished up the repair order. I went and sat down and this gentlemen walked in and the lady said "name?? I want you to meet a customer from 26 years ago who's back!" This person was the new owner now and was very polite and he is a Veteran as well so we already had a connection! The guys finished the tire repair and because of our idle chit chat they were very fair with my and I'm now going to schedule more service with them today! I want to thank the two guys in the shop as I walked in at 4:00 pm and they needed to stay. I also wanted to thank the front office for being so gracious. This maybe long winded but this was my experience.

From the beginning, funding was never an issue, and once I was presented with the repair estimate and recommended work, I approved everything with the expectation that the repairs would be completed within a reasonable timeframe. To give credit where it's due, when I first brought the truck in, they successfully diagnosed and repaired an issue that several other shops could not figure out. They got the truck running and driving again very quickly, which I genuinely appreciated. Because of how efficiently they handled the difficult diagnostic issue, I was confident the remaining repairs would be completed in a similar manner. After diagnosing the initial problem, they presented me with a lengthy list of additional recommended repairs. I approved the work, and they opted to keep the truck at the shop to complete everything. I also informed them that I was relying on a rental vehicle in the meantime. While I mentioned there was "no rush," that was intended as courtesy--not an expectation that the truck would sit untouched for months. I understand that staffing shortages can create delays, and the owner explained they have been short-staffed since October. However, as a customer, it is frustrating to see previously accepted jobs continually delayed while newer and smaller jobs appear to move ahead in priority. Over the past five months, my truck has essentially been pushed into storage while work on other vehicles continued. I also understand that sourcing parts for a 1988 truck can take additional time. However, I was informed that one of the major parts they had been waiting on shipped on the 20th of last month, and since then there still appears to have been little to no effort made toward installing it or progressing the repairs. Following the shop's Facebook page and making several visits in person only reinforced the impression that my truck was no longer a priority. The delays have completely derailed my spring and summer plans, and getting updates has felt like pulling teeth. After waiting five months, I reached out to the owner simply asking for a rough timeline on when work might resume. The response I received was that I was welcome to remove the truck from the shop if I could not continue waiting. While I respect their ability to diagnose difficult issues, my overall experience with communication, scheduling, and customer service has been extremely disappointing.

Last time we took the car in for a oil change/ inspection. Tim and his team figured out what has causing a noise eminating from one of our wheels which was luckily covered under our car's warrantee. The year before we took it to the dealership and they didn't diagnose the problem. When we had an older car Tim and his team did a great job of repairing all of the various problems our car had. What I really like about the place is that they are not pushy in any way. Just a quality auto shop without the up selling which is common at many commercial autoshops and dealers.

That kind of integrity is why we've stayed loyal for many years. However, there has been a lingering problem that keeps giving me pause, and it has nothing to do with the work that is performed by Tim and his mechanics. It's the woman, who shall remain nameless, who answers the phone that keeps tripping up what should be a smooth, well-oiled experience like it was years ago. Ultimately, getting a direct, straightforward answer from her has proven harder than getting my kids to do their chores, and the tone is about the same, too. There's this steady drip of condescension, as if every question is a personal affront to her. And there are the sighs, the putting on hold, more sighs, and then there is the "Take it or leave it" edict. More than once, I've called needing work done, found myself hanging up mid-conversation, and immediately dialed another shop. In fact, the last couple of times I've called, I didn't even wait for the frustration to build; the moment her voice hit the line, I simply hung up and spared myself the aggravation. There have been times I've asked for clarification or if there was any other availability after she's issued her verdict; it felt like I was stepping out of line and challenging her authority. Which is a strange experience when all I'm trying to do is support a local business and throw money their way. I mean, I get it - it's a busy shop, lots of moving parts...That is not an excuse to be void of a little appreciation, or even a modicum of basic courtesy, which shouldn't be too much to hope for. Tim, I hate that this reflects on your business at all, because you've always been, and I'm sure still are a solid, trustworthy place. Judging by how full your lot is, it's clear you're still a local favorite. All I'm asking is this: please send a little of your empathy and human skills her way. I'm sure she's a perfectly nice woman when she isn't answering the phones, but something changes the moment that line rings, and it's impacting the experience, at least in my opinion, in a way that doesn't match the quality of your work. Thank you for all you do for this community.
