I have brought my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado( original owner) to Great Bridge Muffler and Brake for several years every August for a state inspection and an oil change. On Friday, August 15, 2025, I received a call regarding a failed inspection, due to the third brake light and the parking brake will not hold due to the backing plates not holding the parking brake cable. I asked how much would that cost to fix? The repairman on the phone said that it was hard to say until it's opened up and looked at but it could possibly be around $1000. He also said that usually people would not want to spend thousands of dollars on an old vehicle. I said that I would call him back and let him know what I will do. After checking online for the possible charges for that type of repair, I called back and said go ahead with the repairs. This truck has never had any major repair problems and $1000 is a lot cheaper than new car payments. After a week I called Great bridge Muffler and Brake this morning (8/22/25) to check on the status. The owner answered and said, "We have been waiting for a call back with what to do with your truck". I was shocked and said I called right back last Friday and said, "Go ahead with the repairs". While my husband is deployed a little squirrel decided to make a home out of his truck.. who knew they liked the sweet taste of wiring and that in the engine would be a great place to build a nest. Made the mistake a few weeks back of purchasing two used tires from another establishment because money was tight. My vehicle drove horribly immediately after pulling off the lot and the shop refused any further service without charging additional fees because I "failed to inspect my tires" before leaving the premises. The following day the right tire was flat and had a nail in it which I pulled out and plugged only to discover another metal object jutting out which I too removed and plugged. Long story short I spent the next 2 weeks driving a vehicle I didn't feel safe in and refused to bring on the interstate. This morning, with the arrival of payday, I began scrolling through yelp looking for another garage and any that had a negative review I scrolled passed because it was the one negative review of the last establishment that I ignored that I should've paid the most attention too. I called up and spoke to Jimmy who took the time to find me two quality new tires at a price that wouldn't break the bank. He achieved that and we set an appointment time of 2:30pm because the tires had to be ordered. Arrived on time, was greeted as I walked through the door and told the tires were waiting as promised. My vehicle was brought in and the work was performed the way it should've been done by the fly-by-night shop down the street, but hadn't been. I was fearful that I would need an alignment in order to get my car running a straight line again, but instead it took a good mechanic that properly balanced my tires unlike the last place that bragged about "custom installation!" I'll take proper installation over custom any day of the week because my car is running smooth down the highway again at interstate speeds. Lastly I asked a tech about an A/C service being that summer is creeping in again and low and behold it was Jimmy. He didn't try to sell me an expensive A/C service package instead he listened to what I told him about my vehicle and came up with his professional opinion which I believe to be just that professional. Although I couldn't get that work done today I will most certainly return for it in a couple weeks because I have found my new locally owned and operated mechanics shop nestled amongst the corporate auto repair big guys out in Great Bridge. Real rude people here! Recently stopped here after I had a bad thermostat in my work car. From the beginning I was skeptical of this place because there wasn't any parking at all on the lot but based on the "5 star ratings" yelp has these guys at, I pushed pass my doubts. Went to the front desk and wasn't at all greeted, just asked "what you need".... so I went on to explain what I figured was wrong with my car and the guy at the counter interrupted me to say, "well you're telling me what to do, so if I do that and it doesn't fix your car then it's on you"..... so I told the guy to give me a second so I could tell the tow truck guy not to drop my car off here. As I'm speaking with the tow truck gentleman, the same guy comes outside to see my car. The tow guy explains to him what he thinks is wrong and he gives the tow guy the same attitude, "well at this point you know more than me, so I'll do whatever you say do"...... at this point I don't care if I needed a heart transplant and you're the last living heart surgeon, you can't do anything for me with that attitude. I had an issue with my truck not starting in cold weather. After testing some theories I figured out what the issue was. My alternators diodes were bad so I wasn't getting the CCAs to start in cold weather. I took it here and told them the issue. They called me and said that it wasn't the alternator, but rather I need a new battery and a terminal. 312 bucks for that. And guess what, my truck STILL won't start in the cold. They ignored what I told them was wrong and charged me for the wrong fixes. Do NOT go here, very unprofessional. 1 star is too high. read more

I really used to like this place.....but not anymore! I paid for an AC "evacuate and recharge" ($89.99) on the sign outside. Unfortunately GBM quoted over $1500 to service my AC, so I chose to do the work myself. Jimmy was nice enough to let me know that my compressor had died also. Upon completion of the work (compressor, expansion valve, drier, full flush, and all new orings, gaskets, and pag oil). I took my car back to GBM to have it "recharged". The tech called and told me that apparently the condenser was clogged and that also needed to be replaced. I spoke with Jimmy and he said "don't worry about the charge since it still needed additional work." "Just bring it back when you're done." I replaced the condenser and used GBM's drop off service. I received a call the next morning that the car was ready. When I arrived at the shop, the receptionist gave me a bill for $54. I asked what was the charge for, and she promptly said "FREON." I said excuse me???, and she asked if I wanted to speak with Jimmy. I asked Jimmy to explain the charge, and he immediately asked if I thought that I shouldn't pay for FREON??? I explained that the sign said $89.99 for "EVACUATE AND RECHARGE", and stated nothing about an additional charge for FREON. Jimmy explained that the $89.99 charge was for labor!!!!! HUH???? $90 BUCKS TO ATTACH TWO HOSES TO A MACHINE AND TURN IT ON??? Jimmy then went into a rant about GBM not charging me for the 2nd recharge and evacuate when the car "wasn't fixed right", and I reminded him that he said "don't worry about the charge." I explained to Jimmy that the only reason why I brought the car back to him was because I had already paid for the RECHARGE and that I could have charged the system myself. Jimmy then insulted my intelligence by saying that I "know nothing about AC systems and that I couldn't recharge my own system!!!!!" I explained that I had manifold gauges, a vacuum pump, and a scale (that I use to weigh my freon) and that I could buy FREON at Walmart for $4.88. My car takes 35 oz of FREON and GBM is charging over $1.54/oz!!!!!! I told Jimmy that I could buy a 30lb tank of Freon from Sam's for $60 bucks ($.13/oz) and I only really needed his shop to evacuate (RECOVER) what was in my system because I don't have the means to do that!!! It was about 5-7 other customers in the lobby at the time, and Jimmy finally said "Well, I run an honest business, and if you don't think you should pay for FREON then here are your keys and have a nice day." I told Jimmy "that if his business was so honest, then how could he charge customers for FREON that he is basically getting for FREE ANYWAY....after he RECOVERS (EVACUATES) it from all of the AC systems of the cars he's been working on!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe Jimmy was having a bad day....like we all do! But this exchange was beyond intelligent, coherent, or good business practice to try and gouge a customer like that. The sad thing is that I used to swear by GBM. As of now though, I am done with GBM and Jimmy! I can just imagine him smiling in the face of my mother, daughter, sister, granddaughter, aunt, grandmother, wife, my child, or any other unsuspecting customer who's not that knowledgeable about car repairs and who would mistake that smile for honesty..........all while holding out his hand and taking your hard earned cash!!!!! Bottom line is that I suspect they weren't pleased about not making that $1500-$1700 off of me to do the repair in their shop! read more

Back in December 2019 I dropped my truck off with them to investigate the coolant leak around my water pump. I get a call that afternoon saying well you need a new water pump and thermostat and hoses. I said no its a brand new water pump I put on myself. Also I have a new thermostat. So after that the tone changed to "oh yeah I see the mechanic wrote on here it has a new water pump and thermostat." He said it may be a defective pump and it is leaking out of the weep hole. I said no it isn't leaking from the weep, it is coming from the gasket. So then it changes again to "ok I can have the tech replace the gasket and we'll see if that works." I agreed and an hour later I get a call saying its all fixed. Obviously they already had it figured out and I doubt they replaced the gasket. I was told I put the pump on at an angle and it wasn't seated correctly. That I would have no doubts about because thats a good possibility. After picking up my truck, all looked good and I was satisfied. A month later I noticed when I checked the oil the dipstick holder came off with the dipstick. They sheared off the bolt that holds the dipstick holder from the alternator. I never called them back because I felt at that point that they weren't really that honest and Covid came and disrupted my activities. They got the work done and put it back together but what did they really do? I won't speculate on anything but I don't know if I can trust them. I know my vehicles. read more

Came here for an inspection and asked how long it would take. I was told that it should be 45 minutes - an hour max. After waiting in the lobby for almost an hour and a half, I noticed that my vehicle was still sitting where I left it in the lot, untouched. I inquired as to how much longer it would be. The girl in the lobby goes into the garage and came back with, "Well, they're still working on another vehicle at the moment. They may be done in about 20 minutes (I'm sure as trustworthy a quote as the initial 45 minutes) and you should be out of here in another hour, hour and a half. Absolutely ridiculous. I received no update until I had to ask for it myself; then was told I would have to wait 4 times longer than I was initially told. I would not go back and, unless you have an exorbitant amount of time to waste, I would suggest you not either. read more

Not a good first impression. I took my car here for an inspection. The girl told me it would be about two hours. When I came back she said it still wasn't done and would be another hour. I came back 1.5 hours later (as they still hadn't called) and still had to wait an additional hour before I could leave. When I expressed my concern about the time a man came up and, without apologizing for the inconvenience, went into a speech about the logistics of state inspections. Now, he was fairly condescending (as I am new to the area) but had they said up front "It will be about two hours, but it's a busy time for inspections and if anyone comes in for a re-inspection they will go to the front of the line." that would have been a completely different story. Or they need an extra person during those busy times. I actually went back for my re-inspection and my experience wasn't much better. It didn't take as long, but the girl at the front desk seemed to have an attitude (at one point rolling her eyes and telling another customer "I don't have time for this." while helping a co-worker who had just left the room). However, I will say that one man there (I"m sorry I didn't get his name! He's an older gentleman who is bald.) had excellent customer service! He was very welcoming, took my information right away in a friendly manner, and chatted for a bit when there was a lull, rather than just standing around. The man who inspected my car was nice, as well, but he was in and out of the lobby quickly. read more

Had a state inspection which failed. No problem with that, but I do have a problem with the tech saying first he would charge 40.00 to align the headlight because it was hard to do. Then he hedged and said it could be the housing or something else. He ended up not doing the work because I told him I was not comfortable with him saying it could be something more serious when he first said the alignment of the headlight. Then on returning to get the second inspection, they did not take me after the vehicle they were working on, they inspected the one they were working on and then another vehicle before getting to mine. According to code, the rejecting station will reinspect the vehicle without delay or at the reasonable conclusion of the current inspection being performed. So they deliberately made me wait through 2 inspections and not following code. Beware of this station. read more
