We came in on a Sunday afternoon for brunch. Though they were pretty crowded, they offered to make space for us since we were so hungry. The overall ambience of the restaurant was calm and clean. Our server was extremely sweet, did her best to keep us happy throughout the meal. The menu is quite diverse, lots of cuisines present if you want to try them (ex. American, Korean, Indian, etc.). We started with the Nakoma Nachos which were amazing. Would have liked some more chips for the amount of toppings. I ordered the Lamb Burger done medium rare and it was pretty good. I would have liked some more seasoning and sauce. I ordered fried plantains on the side which were pretty good, just extremely chewy. It didn't start off very well. The 2 young ladies at the hostess stand were pretty worthless. The only thing they accomplished was to tell us that the patio was closed, but that we could order at the bar and sit on the patio. We had to ask them for menus. This was NOT at the downtown location. The bartender seemed to be doing just about everything outside the kitchen. He and the kitchen staff were excellent. The food was amazing. I highly recommend the steakhouse burger. If the manager/owner of this establishment happens to see this review, my recommendation is that you sack the cutesy teenage girls at the front and split their pay up among the kitchen staff and your bartender. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but my girlfriends and I went out for dinner tonight, and we had the pleasure of being served by Ken. From the moment we sat down, we were so impressed by his outstanding service. Ken was not only incredibly attentive, always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed, but he also was extremely knowledgeable about the menu. What really stood out, though, was how thoughtful and proactive he was--without us even asking, he brought dressing to-go containers when we were packing up leftovers, which was such a nice touch. Would NOT recommend this to anyone!! They wanted to serve me foods I was allergic to even though they knew ahead what the allergies were. Didn't pay any attention to the needs. If I hadn't been diligent, I'd have ended up in urgent care and on meds the whole weekend and would have missed the races going on. Went for a lazy lunch on a Saturday and ordered the Steak Sandwich with fries. The service was decent, but the order came out luke warm on the verge of cold. To the credit of our server, he offered to replace it - but I was already almost half way into it so that seemed like a fool's errand. He apologized and said there were some issues with the kitchen staff - so I appreciate his candor - but if you know you have problems - then fix them or close! Even if it had been piping hot - it still lacked flavor - and at that temp I can't even begin to judge the fries. I gave them 2 stars for service and attempts to make things right - but I would give 0 stars for the actual food. I won't' be heading back any time soon, if ever. read more

My family & I came in for dinner last night and were seated downstairs for the first time, how I missed this before I have no idea- There is a shuffle board, a pool table and 2 dart boards. My tweens had a great time playing darts while we waited for our food and there was another family enjoying a game of pool when we arrived. Very family friendly on this Tuesday night. We always love to see the new menu items, I love that they change it up seasonally. I had the chimichurri ranch steak salad and it was delicious. My husband ordered the meat loaf which did not disappoint. The kids were all happy with their menu items as well. The best part of the menu though- is the cocktail offerings- never dull- always a creative twist and always more options than I can try in one visit. The potatoes and eggs were tasty, and the biscuit was a much better bread option than the standard toast. I would probably go with the bacon option if I ordered this again. We came here for lunch. We shared a bowl of the West African Chicken Peanut Stew. The stew was good but lacked some of the seasoning and spices you'd expect when you think West African. I got the Cubano sandwich with pub fries. The sandwich was good. The bread was fresh and it was a good sized sandwich. The fries, however, were disappointing. They appeared to be frozen fries and tasted like it. Where's the hand-cut fries? They have a lot of outdoor seating, which is great. And they also have shuffleboard! Great Dane has been pretty consistent for us lately, likely in part to the fact we generally eat early before the standard dinner rushes. Service has been good, food is generous and tasty. And it's nice that this location found a restaurant with staying power. Entree prices seem reasonable but the appetizer prices are sure up there. Saw one appetizer on the menu for $12.25. Very disappointed in our service or lack of. We had called to make a reservation and were told they do not take them. So we showed up and we're told we had a 45min-1hr wait fine. Halfway threw they said they could seat half our party. When we asked how long we were told another hour or so. But then they sat someone same size as our party saying they had a both set aside. I've enjoyed dining at the Great Dane since they opened in the early to mid-90s. Our most recent visits have been lackluster to say the least. Tonight we sat down and were assigned a server. I asked if the Irish stout was a nitrogen tapped beer. He didn't know. I acquiesced and ordered the Scotch ale. When my drink arrived, he said that since the American Pale Ale had run out, he brought me the Irish Stout. Thankfully, it was on nitro. I never mentioned the APA. We ordered dinner including an appetizer. Our dinner arrived and I had to remind him of the appetizer. As we sat there they made several more mistakes with their other tables. The problem I have, is that their level of service seems to have become the standard of service. I'm unlikely to ever return. read more

The bartenders were super nice and ready to answer questions despite the fact it was busy. 2. The bar clientele skewed young--like college kids which is weird because-- 3. It's not cheap. You're in $15 for most entrees and beers are another $6 or so. 4. Because it skewed young it was really noisy and people were sloppy with drink spillage and knocking into tables and stuff--amateur hour. 5. The food was surprisingly good. I had shrimp and grits my dining partner had the fish tacos. No complaints at all about the food. 6. The beer was good. I had the Scotch Ale and the Emerald Isle Stout, my dining partner had the non-German Pilsner. 7. Large space with an upstairs. We live in the neighborhood and have gone numerous times. Not so much lately. Food is good but not consistent. Beer is also inconsistent. I am not a beer expert so I thought it might just be me. I asked numerous brewer friends......they agreed wholeheartedly. The main thing that stops us from being regulars is the staff. Inconsistent again, poor training, etc. Forgetting to come back and check in, no silverware or condiments, attitude.... More than once our server "jokingly" made fun of us because we did not care for their beer. This has happened on more than one visit. Not really the way to get return customers. Some people just don't like certain craft beers. Having options would be my suggestion. read more

We sat upstairs and have an exceptional view of the sunset over the capital with both lakes in view. Although the service was less than ideal. The server yelled at us from the end of the table in an already quiet dining room, I am not sure she was aware of how loud she was as she walked into the kitchen/dishwasher area and continued to yell at her co workers. Nothing mean or disturbing but every word we heard clear as day. Then the dishwasher came in without head phones and was using a speaker to listen to music while he cleans dishes, while I appreciate his music choice it was all I could hear while tryying to eat my food and hold a conversation with my date. Lastly, another beer or even a water refill never was offered in the 1.5 hours I was there, I then had to flag down the server for a check and box. She was so busy cleaning up the other tables, and walking directly by mine to see my empty drinks. Quite pittiful esperience, this was one of my favorite spots for date night and sun sets I am not sure I will visit again anytime soon after such a meh experience this past weekend. read more

Booked the "large" meeting room for a recent lunch meeting. Booking was easy, and the room cost was reasonable when purchasing food and drink. The room includes a screen, however, the computer hook-up is on the side of the room, so the presenter cannot stand at the front. Requested seating for a max 20 people, and it was set-up for 19. Even after adding 2 more tables, the 15 attendees complained the space was too small, and it was hard to hear the presentation with the eating. It was tight! The food was good, and the service was great. The staff did a good job refilling drinks and tending to everyone, even during the presentation. At one point I had to close the door, because the kitchen was loud, and it was interfering with the sound in the room, but never had an issue with the waitstaff. The location is great, however, I can't imagine ever needing such a small room again. Make sure you see it before booking! And anticipate you will not be able to fit 2-3 people per table (as they suggest). read more

We made a pit spot at Great Dane on our way through Madison. The beer was fantastic, we tried the Botanical IPA and the I5 IPA. We also ordered the cheese curds as well as the fish and chips and the chicken Caesar salad wrap. We were most excited to order the curds as we were in Wisconsin. However the coating had a gritty texture. Our main dishes were overall underwhelming. The fish and chips were still hot from the fryer when we received them at the table, but were lacking in flavor. I went for trivia the other night. I put my name in for a table and noticed an open booth. I asked the hostesses if I could be seated there. They said yes but then did nothing. It took them nearly ten minutes to seat us and then we never even received menus. The hostesses were not busy. In fact, the hostesses at this location tend to just social with each other most of the time. When we finally sat down, the service was slow. Yeah, it was trivia night. But come on. Check on us occasionally. Maybe it was a busy night and things fell through the cracks. Maybe not. I dropped them a star because I tried their Apple Crumble. It was pretty awful. It was REALLY cold. They took it right out of the fridge and served it. The crumble was described as a granola topping. It more like streusel or coffee cake. For $5.50 and I expected a burst of flavor in my mouth.
