My friend and I came here late in the day, so there weren't really that many options left. On the flip side, there were parking spots available! Inside seemed relatively clean. We ended up ordering their Cinnamon Chip Scones. It came in a four pack, but the staff was willing to break it up if we wanted less which I thought was nice. Based off our limited interactions, the staff seemed pleasant and they rang us up quickly. I typically find British style scones...okay...mainly due to how they are generally dense and dry which is not really my cup of tea. Thankfully Great Harvest Bread's scones were nothing like that! They were large, fluffy, and moist, reminding more of a muffin. They tasted good at room temperature, and even better warmed up in the toaster oven. Updating my outdated review...but nothing to really update because Great Harvest remains a favorite local, small business bread and baked goods shop. We loved this place when we first tried it decades ago (!!) and still love it to this day. Consistently deliciously amazing breads. CLOSED SUNDAYS AND MONDAYS but most other days open early at 8AM. If you can go on a weekday, it's so easy (if you're local to downtown old town Herndon) to just pop in and out. Parking is plentiful - either in their (small) lot behind their shop or really anywhere on the street or side streets that are easy-peasy walkable to the shop. Their specialty flavor bread selections rotate - their website has their monthly calendar of offerings (I posted a sample menu pic for this month along with a few other pics I took when I stopped in this week.) During the holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, you'll find classic seasonal favorites. We love their Sourdough and their Apple Scrapple. YUM. Prices are very reasonable for wholesome, all natural, freshly baked bread and goodies. And the staff has ALWAYS been super friendly and helpful - they have a lot of young people working there. They're always happy to hand out free bread samples. This time around, we thought we'd try their cinnamon roll - we bought the giant roll instead of the 4 smaller roll pack and found that the icing was wayyyyyyyyyy tooooooooooo sweet and sugary. And the roll was undercooked and doughy throughout. We were hoping for something closer to Cinnabon which is the standard bearer of cinn rolls let's be honest - so we were a bit disappointed. Would not recommend unless you like overglazed sickly sweet icing that overpowers the (undercooked) roll. :( We will stick with their signature breads which are worth the trip in. You'll be hooked. I haven't been in a while but I love the oatmeal cookies! When I go I always leave with more than the cookies because I am always intrigued by the different varieties of breads. Came for the first time, on a friend's recommendation. Purchased rye bread (sourdough) to make sandwiches with our left over St. Pats corned beef. I tasted it, and it's so good. Dense yet soft, with a great crust and fantastic rye flavor. Perfect for our sandwiches. Also picked up a chocolate chip cookie and an oatmeal raisin cookie. The choc chip was very good. The oatmeal raisin was the BEST cookie, of any kind, I've ever had. Perfect texture and so flavorful. Good thing I don't live real close to this bakery. read more

We bought a loaf of cinnamon chip for Christmas Eve French toast and 2 stollens as gifts. The French toast tasted like a cinnamon roll! They have a punch card for each loaf you buy. Bought bread here last week and I am ADDICTED!! The fresh white bread and honey wheat are game changers for my morning and evening snack. And the Montesary honey????!!!!!! SO DELICIOUS!! My wife and I have been customers of Great Harvest since moving to Herndon a few decades ago. Our children were raised on Honey Whole Wheat and I have gained several pounds due to an unfortunate addiction to Apple Scrapple. My wife loves the scones and cookies, claiming that since they are all made with natural ingredients, they must be "good for her". Uh huh. Seriously, this is a great store owned by a great guy. This place is just fantastic. They staff is incredible each time we go. From offering a tasting of todays fresh baked bread to being able to answer all sorts of questions about ingredients and what is served when. It's definitely home-y. Funny enough we've lived here for years and just happened into the shop a day or two before thanksgiving and happened to try the stuffing bread. OH MY LORD IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. Needless to say we were going to come buy some but they were sold out each time after the first loaf and they only make it in November. WAHHHH. But we understand and will patiently wait until next year and buy extras! The pastries are also tasty as well as the soup packages you can buy. We will be back often as we love carbs. read more

Can't believe I've lived in the area for 3 years and just now learned about this little slice of heaven. Fresh breads baked daily, made from scratch and baked to perfection. They offer several baked goods as well, including but not limited to muffins, cookies, and giant cinnamon rolls. Their cookies and muffins are bran-based, so if that's not your forte I would steer clear of them. They bake certain breads on certain days, so check out their website to see which breads are baked each day to make sure you can get what you want when you want it! This place is just amazing. I love their apple scrapple bread. Just eating it plain or with a little butter is so good. I decided to test it out with my homemade tahini and molasses spread which was great too. I LOVE BREAD. And, Great Harvest Bread Co. makes pretty 'darn good bread' (just as their website name states!). This location is owned by Ken Marter, but the franchises can be found all across the US; I was super excited, as I've been to the Evanston (IL) location several times! Great Harvest is known to grind spring wheat kernels on a daily basis to make their whole wheat flour, so you know you're getting fresh-baked breads that's literally baked and crafted from scratch! :D Items that they offer include Honey Whole Wheat, Orange Cranberry, Sunflower Crunch, Focaccia, Tuscan Herb, etc. They also have sweets, such as cookies, scones, muffins, and tea loaves. The hubs brought some home for the fam, and we had a bread feast :D We tried the French Toast Loaf (super delicious - literally tastes like a 'French Toast' in a loaf form, and the place definitely didn't skimp out on the cinnamon and the sugar-y goodness!); a cheese breadstick (literally one of my favorite breads of all time - this long piece of fluffy and slightly chewy bread was generally interwoven with cheese and garlic - sooo YUMMY!); and, a package of old-fashioned white rolls (great buttered up and/or with a piece of cheese and/or to use for sliders!). I had the absolute worst experience here before Thanksgiving. I typically go to the Vienna location and always have amazing service/bread, so I was really shocked at what happened in Herndon. I was interested in buying Stuffing Bread (delicious) a few days before Thanksgiving. I called the location on my way over to make sure they had it in stock. The person who answered the phone was extremely rude and hung up on me after telling me they had it in stock. I thought maybe it was a mistake, but then I ended up dealing with the same person at the store. When I arrived, I walked up to the sampling counter and no one was there to help. Finally an employee walked over and instead of happily offering samples like in Vienna, he looked at me like I was crazy. I asked if I could try the stuffing bread, and he gave me a piece. Trying to lighten the mood, I asked if people make stuffing out of the stuffing bread or just serve it on its own - and again, he didn't answer and just looked at me like I was crazy. While I would have loved to try the other offerings, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to ask. Instead I asked to just buy a loaf of the stuffing bread, and the employee rung me up. This is where it got bad. He actually started off by apologizing for being in a foul mood -- he said "I'm sorry I'm in such a bad mood but I've been working since last night". I said, "oh no! why? I hope you can go home soon" and he said, verbatim, "because people like YOU keep coming in here". Wow! Sorry we want bread before Thanksgiving. It's not like I showed up right before they closed... this was around 1pm. I quickly apologized to him, left and I'm never going back. read more

HERE'S WHAT I LIKED: - I loved to see that the breads are actually baked RIGHT in store. - They also offer bread tastings and I liked the flavor of everything I had tried. I took home a box of scones, some cheese breadstick and a cookie and it was all very tasty as well. - Their staff was always very friendly and attentive. HERE'S WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE: - I've now bought things there twice to see if the breads and baked goods are always the same. I unfortunately have to say that every single time the breads, as well as the other baked goods, were very VERY "under-baked" (dough was always kind of 'raw' inside). Nothing had a golden crisp crust (not the breads nor anything else) - and as said above, the dough inside the breads and scones was a bit raw. I didn't like it and mentioned it at my second visit... but I guess that's how they like their breads. - Their prices are way too high in my opinion! Awwww childhood memories are coming back to me as I write this review! I literally used to go here almost every week with my family. I absolutely love their bread. So many flavors and choices. The sampling part is the best so there is no surprises at home. With butter and honey= your in bread heaven. You can always get a drink with your bread but even without it: you will love the sample of bread then choose a loaf of bread to go and your all set. The feel is so homey and neighborhood friendly, they are located in downtown Herndon. When I used to live in Herndon I used to ride my bike here and it was very convenient from the bike trails. This is a quaint bakery that does unique loafs and sweets. I had a craving for some good bread, so I decided to swing by Great Harvest instead of going to the regular grocery store. I'm glad I did. I've always really liked local and small bakeries wherever I go. Why? Because they use quality ingredients and have a rotating selection of products. GH has this, and it bodes well for my future bread and baked goods endeavors. I got a 9-grain loaf, and wow, I couldn't be happier. At 2.2 lbs, it's baked well - soft and moist inner, a slightly crusty (but not flaky) shell, and lots of grains interspersed in the dough. They definitely don't skimp on the specific ingredients for each loaf. The ladies behind the counter were cheery and helpful, even on a gloomy day. I also liked that they have samples for tasting, and these samples aren't small. In terms of decor, there isn't really any. It's a counter with racks of bread behind it. I think it's good, because they can focus on the product, and you know what you're paying for in the pricing of the products. read more

Been coming here for over a decade. I love how sweet the employees are, giving slabs of bread samples and patiently answering questions about all the bread and treats. I remember before the plastic partitions and cases went up, they would love baskets of cookie and scone samples and I'd go nuts. There were coloring sheets you could do, and if you brought yours in, you got a free giant chewy perfect oatmeal cookie. I did my coloring sheet well past being perceived as a "kid." Apple scrapple continues to amaze me; the normal white bread slices and toasts magically at home; and Savannah bars are still excellent and always welcome treats in my house. If you're ever in the area, even 10 minutes away, do yourself a favor and stop by. It's a small bakery located on the corner of Station St, and it's very welcoming. You can walk in through the front or side entrance (I think the side entrance has more room, and you can browse more as you walk), but either way, you can smell the fresh-baked bread (which is a wonderful aroma). One of the nice things are the generous samples they have - they usually have three loaves on display, and you can ask for one or more. Try it with the butter or the honey (I personally prefer the butter). The apple scrapple is amazing, and the honey whole wheat is also really good. All of the bread is freshly made - you can see the fresh loaves behind the cashier, and the dough being prepared. Other than the bread, they offer plenty of other things. I've only had the scones a few times (mostly since I'm so full from the bread), but they've always been great - not too dry, and the right amount of "crumbly". The cookies are also generously large and really delectable. Do yourself a favor, pop in, sample a few, and buy at least a loaf (the prices are not bad at all). You won't regret it.
