Sometimes you just want to reward yourself with something sweet and delicious.  That's why we decided to head on over to Twisted Sweets & Savory.  We had never had chimney cakes before - an omission that shall not be allowed to happen again because - Yum!  These are like if really sugary donuts were stretched out into long snakes of dough and then coiled up until it made a wonderful open tube to be coated with all sorts of great things. We chose to do the pistachella and the bounty.  They both featured Nutella and if that wasn't enough, one added crushed pistachios and the other coconut flakes.  They were very tasty but very rich and between the two of us, we had to admit defeat before finishing them both.  Happily, there are to go boxes to bring home any remainders.  The space is very clean and there are tables and lots of napkins (which you will need because these treats are both awesome and very messy).  The staff was very friendly and the parking is easy in the lot out front.  We will have to come back again to try some of the savory options to definitely be followed up by another dessert one. Twisted Sweets and Savory had been on my radar for quite some time. Yet, it took us quite a while to give it a try. In part, that was us not quite able to figure out exactly where it was. Grant Street, it turns out, is disjointed. In other words, it's not like it's just a straight shot from one end to the other. We stopped in here on a Saturday around 4 p.m. The place closes at 6 p.m., and are closed on Sunday. At that time of day, they weren't at all busy. The young man at the counter took our orders, and someone working in the back made the sandwiches. We just ordered savory items, so we can't speak to how the sweet items are (although some of them sounded so good). I ordered the salmon sandwich, which consists of: "Choice of your chimney bread, spread with dill cream cheese, filled with smoked Atlantic salmon, spring mix, cucumber, and red onion." The bread choices are everything bagel, jalapeno, and cheesy. I chose the everything bagel and asked for no onion. I found this sandwich to be tasty, but I thought they could have gone lighter with the dill cream cheese. The bread had a nice crispness. My husband ordered the ham and Swiss sandwich, which consists of: "Choice of your chimney bread, spread with paprika mayo and filled with black forest ham, Swiss cheese, fresh romaine hearts, spring mix, sweet pepper, tomato, cucumber, and red onion". He wasn't happy with the paprika mayo, as he says mustard would have worked better. Nor did he care for the sweet peppers. Now he knows not to order the default setting for this sandwich but instead to customize the toppings. They work with DoorDash, which, when ordering online, gives the option to customize one's order. There are high tables, the type that are found in bars, for those who want to eat their sandwiches there. The place is kept very clean. read more

After hearing the whispers that Twisted Sweets & Savory was churning out the best sandwiches in Norther Virginia over the past few years, I was finally able to stop by and see for myself it the rumors were true. And let me tell you .. I may have been put into a straight food coma but this place is legit! The smell of freshly baked chimney bread hits you as soon as you walk in and it comes in tons of different flavors like cheesy, everything bagel, cinnamon, oreos, and tons more. I tried their sandwich of the week which was a meatball sub on an everything bagel chimney and found it to be super tasty! My daughter's were more about the sweet chimneys and my goodness, those babies are HUGE! Even split three ways, we still had to throw away a good portion of our delicious dessert (we did make your own with an oreo chimney, vanilla soft serve, and rainbow sprinkles). I've had this place bookmarked for a couple months and finally had a chance to try this Hungarian chimney in Herndon! I came a little after opening time on a Saturday morning. They were surprisingly not set up, with the chimneys not in the display. If I were able to see the chimneys in the display, I probably would have created my own. I ended up just ordering something off the menu since I didn't get a chance to see the options up front/in person. I selected the Pistachella. It didn't taste/feel like it was freshly made (considering I've had freshly made ones in TX). However, the flavors were great, with the combination of nutella and shredded pistachios. I'm curious to try the savory chimney, and create my own sweet one. Customer service was okay, enough to be able to place the order. There was parking in front of the establishment. You can choose between Nutella, dolce de leche and cream cheese frostings to stuff inside a variety of flaky pastries. Specifically, I really want to try the pastry stuffed with ice cream. They called us a sweet chimney and you can fill it with your choice of Nutella, dolce de Leche, or marshmallow fluff, and then pick your ice cream flavor. It's right off the W&OD Trail in Herndon. You can't see it from the Trail but it's literally one minute from the W&OD. When I'm on a bike trip I get my sandwich to go and eat it on the downtown Herndon plaza that's a few minutes west (by bike). This is an authentic Hungarian style of bread. Very unique as they are called chimney sandwich. Basically hollow bread with yummy fillings in the middle. We tried Chicken salad(my favorite with fresh crisp veggies included), Tuna, limited time Reuben. Also tried the sweet Cannoli sandwich. For me the issue is once I like a sandwich, it becomes hard for me to try others. Wish I can get half and half... Went in for lunch around 11:30, but the restaurant got busy quick. We ordered the salmon and Italian sandwiches with everything bread. The bread was delicious and had a wonderful crispy texture, but very soft on the inside. Even though the chimneys didn't look big, they load up the sandwiches inside. They were delicious! We also had a pistachio Nutella chimney for desert and it was out of this world. The service was very quick and very friendly. Inside the restaurant was spotless. I was really impressed with the sandwiches we got from here! We tried the turkey sandwich, Hungarian sandwich, and ham and swiss sandwich. The sandwiches were all packed full of toppings and fillings that were really fresh and tasty. I enjoyed the turkey sandwich- I would probably ask for a bit less red onion next time, though, or no red onion because it was a pretty powerful flavor. We liked the variety of breads, too, which were so fresh and very flavorful (we tried the cheesy and the everything bagel and liked both). Do not skip the desserts- the cinnamon bread filled with cannoli cream was one of the most delicious and unique things we've had in a while. It's a little hard to eat but that's part of the fun of it :) This was a fun and unique lunch option- definitely recommend! read more

Upon entering, the owners were so welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable. They offer Sweet Chimneys and Chimney Sandwiches. Sweet Chimney flavors include: Classic, Cinnamon Sugar, Cocoa, Oreo, Coconut, and Walnut. Ice Cream flavors include: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Twist. You can also add a spread and toppings. Chimney Sandwiches include: Hungarian, Chicken Salad, Turkey, Ham & Swiss, Roast Beef, Veggie, and Caprese. Tried their Cinnamon Sugar and Oreo sweet chimneys and they were delicious! Super fresh, lightly crisp and toasty on the outside, warm and soft within. Flavors were all there. What a lovely sweet treat! The owners are so nice. To Hungarians it's known as Kürtőskalács. To me I first heard about this at work when a colleague was raving about Chimney sandwiches in Herndon. I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about but she told me I had to go and try them immediately. So I did. Originally a food truck, Twisted Sweets & Savory has not taken up shop on a small side street of off Herndon's main Elden St. drag. When I walked in the tiny storefront had enough room for a small counter and a couple of tables. On the counter there they were: thin cylinders of bread, created with a spit to achieve their chimney-like moniker. I later read up that in Europe it's usually a sweet dessert item, but Twisted had both sweet varieties (Oreo, Cinnamon Sugar) as well as savory ones (Cheese, Everything Bagel, Jalapeño.) The large empty space inside these breads make it a perfect container for sandwiches. I got an Italian which came filled with Genoa Salami, ham, pepperoni, and provolone cheese. It was a fantastic sandwich, the bread was thing yet fluffy with a croissant-like texture. I wish I could have one every day of the week. I later found out my colleague that recommended Twisted had already had it four weeks in a row! Twisted is such a new and unique addition to the area- I don't think I've ever been so enthusiastic to recommend this to anyone that can make it up to Herndon. We ordered lunch here recently. Those rolls are so soft that I would buy just the bread! I enjoyed the cheese twist a lot, and I was very happy with the amount of bread since I'm normally picking off excess bread so as to get more filling in each bite. The Hungarian was everything that I had hoped for for lunch. It was filled with meat, cheese, and veggies with the perfect roll delivery device. The dessert, however, was a bit too much. My husband disliked the S'mores, stating that the jimmies weren't the chocolate that was needed. Also, the cinnamon sugar wasn't classic. Most s'more connoisseurs will agree that a regular graham cracker is the way to go. I thought he was being overly critical at first. Then I tried it, and greatly disliked it as well. The cannoli one was delicious, but missing a lot of that delicious cannoli cream! I wished there was more than a thin spread. Great place, great concept, and tasty chimney cake! The kind lady at the counter was very welcoming and sweet. This is a brand new business with a European dessert concept. The place is small and cute on the inside. The kitchen is chock full of chimney cake baking machines and you know they mean business. I was told they have a Oreo and cannoli special and I was happy to give it a whirl. It was a great combo of flavors that complimented the chimney cake very well. This was my first visit and it was a nice experience to feel like I was back in Hungary. Herndon now has a great new bakery that is producing Hungarian chimney rolls which are just like the ones we ate in Hungary. We tried the cinnamon and walnut rolls. As each chimney is custom made, it was interesting to watch the process unfold right in front of me. Both were great. It is best to eat them when they are warm; but, then the cinnamon one barely made it home for my wife to try. Once they are cold, they still taste great but are more of a challenge to chew (for old guys with dentures!) This business is in a small shop on a side street. Delicious! My husband and I split the salmon chimney sandwich and it was fabulous. The fresh dill cream cheese and generous portion of smoked salmon set it apart from other sandwiches I've had. Also really appreciated the cucumber slices inside and the lemon wedge for squeezing on top. We also got a cinnamon sugar chimney cake that was very tasty. Good food! This is located next to my dog groomer, and I see them every time I take the dogs for some form of grooming. Leaving today, I decided to try a chimney cake because they look so good in the picture on the window. They look good with ice cream, and when I ordered one, that's what I thought I was getting. So when they wrapped it up and didn't put ice cream in it, I asked, and they said that was something else. I was shocked since it all looked like one thing in the picture on the window. But it isn't. I was told they cut the chimney cake in half and put ice cream in it. The Chimney cake is a Hungarian pastry, and actually, it is pretty delicious. I got the one that had a candy cane around it and demolished it in a short period of time. I will go back the next time and try it with ice cream. I will take more pictures and maybe try one of their sandwiches. Not the friendliest guy taking my order, but the lady who came to explain why it didn't come with ice cream was super friendly and gave an easy-to-understand explanation. This place consistently has great food and desserts. It's a cute little place mostly meant for takeout - only 2 tables with 2 chairs each, all high tops. My favorite is the Hungarian on their delicious jalapeño and cheese bread; it has a kick without being too spicy. They have canned pops/sodas (no fountain) and waters, and a small selection of single-serving bags of chips. Their desert chimneys are decadent; dusted with cinnamon sugar or crushed Oreos and the inside is coated with the filling of your choice.
