We arrived to check out this bodega/bakery to claim the cake and check out the bakery but were turned away. We were disappointed this establishment did not honor their gift, and their manager was unwilling to speak to us, who were hiding in the back of the store. I went to Herndon's Bodega and Bakery for a last minute cake. I was able to get a cute 8" cake for about $30. While I was there there was gentleman leaving with warm bread in a bag, which made me curious and I found that this bakery bake fresh Pan De Frances (which is basically the bread used to make tortas (sandwiches). The bread costs $0.50 each (I bought 12=$6) which I thought was a steal. The bread was fresh from the oven and you can go to the back left corner where the bakery items are, knock on the door and request however many you want/need. They also have fresh donuts, Salvadorian bakery items, cookies, mini cakes. It was definitely worth the trip. They also custom make cakes I saw someone leave with a hugeeeee baby shower sheet cake that looked to serve over 100 people easily. I would definitely recommend this place! read more

10.02 Needed a cake for a coworker's farewell lunch. Came in on a mission to bring the cake to work at noon, I had 30 minutes to get back to Reston. The line at the counter was long when I walked in, by the time I chose a cake there were only 2 people left. Took 10 minutes for the whole transaction, 2/3 of the time I was trying to decide which pretty cake to pick. When I finally did, the lady boxed it up at the counter and rang me up. Badabing badaboom... I was back in the office ahead of schedule. Verdict: everyone loved the cake. It was light, moist and perfectly spongy for a cake. The flavor was tres leches which can be too sweet at times but not this cake. The frosting was so airy with just enough sweetness. Cake was so good I ate 4 slices and refused to feel guilty gorging. Parking was limited and cake was 50, expensive but worth every penny. read more

Why does a bakery sell horribly stale baked goods??? I'm simply shocked at the hockey pucks I bought today... I bought 2 macaroons that were nearly dust they were so stale..... same for the mini Bundt cake and pan dulce, the latter being so dry that it bounced when I threw it in the trash. I'll not be back! Such a hidden gem. I requested a Minnie Mouse cake for my daughters birthday on Sunday. I came in and left a deposit, told them what flavors, etc. when I came to pick it up I was blown away. The minute you walk in, you're hit by the mouthwatering whiff of freshly baked bread. You know the cartoon scene: character is stopped dead in his tracks by the smell of something delicious and he floats up to it, led by an aroma that 'grabs' him by the nose? Pretty similar feeling when you walk into this little bodega in Old Town Herndon. The bakery is located to the left of the shop's entrance. It's small: a wall and a half of sliding glass panels with a great view of delicious baked goodies. There are no labels but the pastries are pretty easy to identify: danishes, bread pudding, croissants, cream- and custard-filled donuts, sweet breads, birthday cakes, cookies, pound cakes. It's a gorgeous display. The bread pudding is the best I've tasted in a really long time. I'm talking about the homemade kind that your mom used to make when you were a kid. No toppings, no sauce - just a big (I'm not exaggerating; you can easily share one between two) square of sweet bready goodness. There is also a lovely oblong pastry sprinkled with sugar and oozing with a custard filling that is absolutely to die for. All in all though, everything here looks amazing and is worth a try. Please train the lady who takes your telephone orders! She is really bad is getting the requirement correct. I called and asked for an eggless cake and she said it is available upon walk-in and for a second i was so happy that I found a place which sells eggless cake. But when i called again to place a hold on the flavor of the cake the very same lady picked up and said no eggs less cakes in this place.I told her she said they were available a min ago and she hung up the phone on me. The first time I went there they had different baked good, I believe they change a few items every week, but all their breads and sweets are preety good, not too sweet like other latin bakeries. They offer a variety of baked goods from donuts to cookies, perfect for someone that likes to try a little bit of everything and likes having options. They also have a variety of cakes, definetly better than the ones from supermarkets, and make small sized tres leches and other items for dessert. The store as a whole is a pretty typical central american latin store, with a variety of condiments, seasonings, coffees, and other household items. One of my favorite bakeries in Old Town Herndon. Everything is super fresh and there are plenty of items to choose from including French, Argentine, salvadorean, etc. I usually go in for fresh french bread rolls for homemade sandwiches. This time I walked out with 8 rolls, 2 chocolate croissants, 2 almond croissants, 4 almond cheese danish and 1 custard croissant all for under $15!!! We bought 6 different items (vasos de tres leches, orange mapa and few other items that I can't remember the name of), and all of them were really good. Having that low price was an added bonus. You probably wouldn't expect to find delicious pastries in this little convenience store from looking at the store front, but don't judge a book by its cover! LOVE their baked goods. I know (by the owners of the coffee/bike shop next door) that they bake fresh everyday, but I'm not sure of their schedule. I've gotten pastries and baked goods here a few times now and they are delicious. I don't know what most of them are called, but my favorite is something that looks like an eclair without the chocolate topping. It has a sugar coating instead and is so moist. You probably should share it with someone but I never do (unless you count my cup of coffee). I'm pretty sure they do custom orders as well. You walk in and your senses are overloaded by the sweet smell of freshly baked delectable pastries. They tasted as good as they looked and smelled! I loved the savory ones too! I never thought I would actually consider fighting someone over any baked goods, but be warned this bakery will turn you primal in your need to eat all the delicious things that they offer. It doesn't matter what it is, it is delicious, put it in your bag, buy it, and enjoy it! I am serious, just grab anything and it will amaze you, I don't think it is possible to go wrong here. The pastry aisle can get quite crowded with everyone stuffing their bag with anything within sight. I kid you not, their will be a line of people to fill trash bags with bread, but once you taste the goods you will queue up in line with your very own trash bag.
