Great Harvest has one of the greatest innovations to breakfast that no one knows about. In fact if you go to other Great Harvest locations they may not have this item or it may be completely different than the one at this downtown location. Lemme tell you about the amazing Sunrise Roll. I assume it's an original creation but it's a ring of bread with shredded hash brown potatoes that aren't browned at all and 1 or 2 cheeses with an egg on top. Sounds basic right? Well the bread creates this hallow center for the potatoes to rest in...and as you are eating this on the go, you become amazed with how sturdy it is despite the shredded potatoes holding its shape and not falling thru. While you typically your breakfast potatoes/hashbrowns to be crispy or crunchy...the softness of the potatoes are a welcome surprise since they sorta have a consistency of mashed potatoes and that compliments the egg perfectly. Any of you who have had "The Slut" at Eggslut in LA/Vegas know how magical the combination of eggs and mashed potatoes can be. The sunrise roll looks like it would take a lot of labor to bake and then later reheat for customers and at $6.25 or $6.75 with bacon it is a steal since you can't even get a breakfast burrito at this price point these days that aren't even made with the same level of care as the sunrise roll here was. What's sad is I get cravings for these things lol the time and they sell out occasionally, or there have been times I go to other locations and try to order a sunrise roll and they have no idea what I'm talking about or make it completely different. It truly is a bummer when you work yourself up and get excited and hyped up for it only to be met with disappointment. read more

Oh my gosh! The food here is amazing! We did an order on line and I picked it up (as they were just a few blocks from our hotel), but when I got to the store, I had to order a few more things. Their breakfast was amazing. Not sure how they do it, but everything we had from the scones to the twists to the breakfast sandwich. Oh my goodness!! Incredibly impressive service, atmosphere, and bakery. I didn't try the cafe items but the menu looked tempting. The sour dough bread we bought was outstanding. I also sampled jalapeño cheese bread--equally impressive. The gift shop portion of this restaurant was charming and offered a lot of fabulous table-related items. Throughout Covid-19, they have remained open with a smaller Menu, doing their absolute best to continue feeding the community. Located on SW 2nd, just blocks from the Justice Center, the restaurants in this area have been hit even harder. I pass this place every single day on my walk, and finally decided to walk in as my willpower finally gave out! And then I came back again the next day, as the pastries were that darn good! For my first visit, I chose the Marionberry scone, a huge, round, desert plate sized scone loaded with the delectable berries. Wanting to enjoy it with a cup of tea while sitting, I carried my treasure for a mile until I got home. It was worth the wait! It was just lightly sweet, my preference, and it was the perfect mid morning treat. Large enough to share or save half for later that night, which I did. On my return visit, I chose the twisted cinnamon stick, and another marionberry scone! The cinnamon twist was divine. It was the last one in the display case so clearly a popular item, and for good reason. The pastry was both filled and dusted with cinnamon & sugar, with bits caramelized in places on top. The flavor reminiscent of the Elephant Ears you buy the Saturday Market, but thicker, served room temperature and without all the added butter. It was so big, it was impossible to finish in one sitting so I saved half for an after dinner treat. While the pastries and bread are delicious, the woman at the cash register was an equally fabulous part of the experience. What a gem! Even though she waits on people all day, and has to manage the line to keep social distancing with one person in the shop at a time, she greets you with such a warm and genuine smile! We had a delightful conversation and I left with a smile on my face. Kinda wish this wasn't on my walking route because now that I finally stopped in, it will be super hard to resist! read more

We received 2 small ,cold, toasted (partially burnt" sandwiches even though we did not check the box to toast them. The sandwiches here are simple, but tasty and healthy. They aren't fancy, but they are very good for the price. I like the chipotle turkey sandwich on wheat and the turkey club on wheat. I generally buy the lunch box value meal. It comes with a full sandwich, a giant cookie, and a side of chips for under $10. For comparison, Panera (which admittedly is slightly higher quality) usually charges around $10-12 for a comparable meal without the cookie. So, I would say this place is very good value if you are looking for fast, simple food that is healthy and filling. It is a satisfying place for an affordable and healthy lunch. read more

This place was AWESOME. I can't remember the name of the breakfast pastry I posted, but it was basically a pastry with an egg and hash browns and cheese baked into it, which was incredible! They had a version with bacon in it too. When we ordered, the cashier offered for us to try samples of a few other pastries, so I tried a piece of a Kouign Amman, which was so good that I purchased one immediately after trying it. It reminded me of a sweet croissant with cinnamon and sugar, but it was perfectly done. I ended up eating it several hours later in the day, and it was still great. I actually debated going to this place again the next day because of how much I loved it. Would 100% recommend trying out! Can't lose. read more

I'm not normally a fan of chains, but Great Harvest is fantastic. I walk by here almost everyday on my way to work and it always smells so great when I walk by. If I feel like eating a yummy treat, this is my go-to place in the area. I've had their scones, coffee cake, bread pudding, and savory pastries as well. If I had to pick my favorite, I highly recommend their marionberry bread pudding. It's super moist and not too sweet. My second favorite pastry would have to be their sunshine roll. It comes with bacon, eggs (I think there were 2 baked eggs on the top), hash browns inside the pastry, garlic, and cheese. I picked one of these up on my way to work and I ate it for both breakfast and lunch. Super flaky and super delicious. The pastries here are a little pricey ($3-5), but absolutely worth it. They're huge, always fresh, and just dang tasty. The younger man who helps me every morning is also really friendly and makes me feel like I'm starting my day off right. It won't be good for my figure, but I want to try every pastry they have here at some point. I bet they're all delicious. read more

I was served the most horrible sandwich i've ever had. I took one bite of a sandwich made of soggy bread on one side and the other side, hard like it was the last piece of the loaf, but stale. I brought it back after taking one bite and told him I wanted a refund he said OK and didn't take any of my information and said OK it's done you got a refund I said OK give me proof please. He refused to give me anything proving that I had a refund coming and he acted like a smart ass and turned his computer around and said here there is your proof grinning at me. The place has an old-world kind of feel inside, a big contrast to the fancy modern day bakeries around this part of town. It's more like a grab n go kind of place with a quick turnaround time. You can be in and out of here within ten minutes depending on what you ordered and what time of the day it is .They have a card on the counter that you can use to customize your sandwich and they offer a piece of fresh baked bread while you wait. We get a lot of bakery items for our office meetings from here and the scones, Muffin and cookies are always a crowd pleaser. I like the soup and bread combo for a light lunch, or you could pick a half or full sandwich. Also, when they say half it literally is a half and not a smaller version of the sandwich. When they say half a sandwich, they literally mean half a sandwich. The shop is fairly small, more of a quick grab and go type of shop. Although there are a few sets you can actually sit at. I noticed the customer (my friend) in front of me was offered to choose his chips and a side of pickles included. While I got half of a sandwich, with their choice of chips, and no pickles included. Maybe I didn't look like their choice of a customer. The sandwich tasted like your school sandwich you would receive at school, maybe just with a little higher grade meat and veggies. Stopped in for a sandwich during a work trip to Portland. I was happily surprised to see a Great Harvest, since i hadn't been to one since my hometown store way back East. It had been maybe 10 years or more since i had tasted that floury doughy goodness or sampled a crafted slice and or a cookie. GH in Portland hit the spot with a handmade sandwich on that great honey wheat bread. I actually had the owner ring me up and she was a gem. Super friendly we talked about Great Harvest's legacy. My friends back in my home town actually owned the local store and we always had bread and food from there. It was a tasty blast from my past. Cannot beat a sandwich and a pickle for like $7 made by hand with great ingredients and love. Tasty. True to form. Amazing. Well done!!! read more

I got the 'build your own' and it reminded of the bagged lunches my mother would make me when I was in grade school, in the best way possible. The bread was really good & the lettuce, mayo, meat ratio was perfect. Yes I have mentioned the Spinach and Feta cheese bread, even the asiago one and all of the other bread and dessert items looked oh so tasty. These folks come out to the farmers markets and the one I was at was over at 20th and Salmon in the southeast. Very friendly people and love giving out slices of bread for everyone to try. I have for many years enjoyed Great Harvest breads. My favorite is the Dakota bread and I have gotten it when it was delicious and fresh and soft. The last couple of times I've bought this bread which is quite expensive for a loaf of bread it is not fresh. It feels like it is several days old ~ dry and edging toward hard. It's so disappointing and I am not inclined to continue buying bread there. Also, their sourdough which used to be one of my favorites has shrunk and the crust is too dark and very hard on the verge of being burnt. read more

I ordered a "build your own" sandwich today from the Great Harvest shop at 801 SW 2nd Ave, Portland OR, and when I sat down to eat my sandwich I immediately noticed one of the add on items ($1.50 extra) was missing. So I took a couple of pics (before eating the sandwich) and sent an email to this shop informing about the situation. In less than 5 minutes I received a reply from "Jamey" at GH apologizing about the missing item and with no hesitation offered to refund the "$1.50" amount. I replied to Jamey letting her know how impressed I was with the almost immediate reply to my email (not common) and that in the grand scheme it really was no big deal to myself and just wanted to let them know. I did let Jamey know despite the little mishap the sandwich was delicious tasted very homemade and I would certainly continue to do business with them. It's not very often one receives such world class service like this and if this is the Great Harvest culture maintained throughout their locations then HUGE kudos to the company and their employees. The open kitchen and somewhat dusty quality of the atmosphere reminds me of old hippy bakery places from years ago. That gives me comfort. Had you picked the right answer, you would have read this as the description: GHBC is a made-from-scratch bread shop started by two college kids who were into "all-natural" way before it was cool. Now not only do they make delicious bread, but they freely offer it in generous chunks (complete with butter and/or honey) to anyone who visits the store, purchase or not. A hot slice of Apple Crunch bread is worth 5-stars alone. Granted, you'll need to arrive at the crack of the doors to snag a fresh loaf. But trust me - make french toast for your significant other with a piece of this bread, and you will be amply rewarded. read more

This place used to be great. However, when you go in now, your order takes forever because the kids behind the counter can't talk and work at the same time. They finish their personal conversations then make your sandwich, stopping frequently to talk more. The last few times I've ordered a cookie, I get the wrong thing, and today my friend's lunch bore no resemblance to what she ordered.
