I wanted to enjoy this place as it's only a 5 minutes drive from home, but unfortunately left disappointed. I walked in, no appointment, and was quickly rushed to a chair in the back. I told the lady I would like gel take off and new gel, she told me no "only dip". She aggressively started grinding down my gel polish and hit my cuticle multiple times. Then had me put my nails in a bowl of acetone to remove the polish. After multiple dips and grinding sessions she did not have me rinse off my hands but instead started putting on the base polish immediately. I should have got up and left when she pulls her "nippers" out of a drawer, clearly not sanitized, and proceeded to hack away at my cuticle. She nipped a little too close a couple times and caused minor bleeding. Through the entire dip process she seemed bored and did not appear to be paying attention to her craft. Once complete my nails did not look anything like the color I had chosen and are practically see through at the top of the nail. I am so disappointed in my experience, and while the salon looks nice I will be staying far far away. read more

I've been here many times over the last 10 years and have had good and bad experiences. but today's pedicure takes the cake. The guy doing my pedicure was waaay more interested in the soccer game on tv and did the worst job ever. my toes literally look like I had them done by a 5 year old. some of my nails have barely any polish but the skin AROUND my toes has quite a bit! Been coming here since last August and the last few visit haven't been great. Especially today, was rushed because it was busy. Before I can even wash my hands she moved my belongings aside so at an empty table so she can sit another person. Energy was very not friendly and I'm a bubbly person. Not to mentioned she looked me up and down with an attitude because she was about to start another lady and she was told that I was next. I came home and cured my nails under my own lamp. Not happy with a rushed pedicure. At most 15 minutes. No one asks the service you want.

Walked in and were greeted and told to pick a color. We sat up front, then were told to take seats 4&5. After sitting an hour , the owner said he'd have two people free shortly. We asked for hot water so we could at least soak, but he was too busy. Finally one woman took care of my mother. In the meantime 5 people who came in after us were serviced. The woman gave me hot water. I didnt catch her name. She was a lovely Columbian lady. She's done this for 3 years. Sean thanked me for waiting while my mother was being walked to the dryer. I almost said forget it. But I've had him do my nails before and it was great. This service was so, so. And his halitosis made it uncomfortable to chat. I have been a frequent customer for a few years, I have always had great service regardless of my tech, today that changed. I went in looking for a Christmas manicure, the lady in the 2nd booth to the right came over. I showed her what I was looking for. she proceeded to remove my gel polish. she used strictly the buffing tool, no polish remover. she then filed my nails a little and proceeded to put on a base coat. I asked her why she didn't ask me to rinse my hands because 1. I still had some gel on my nails from my previous manicure and 2. I still had powder residue. she said she doesn't do that. she then proceeded to put a while polish on my nails, then pink. it looked streaky and you could see the nails in which she didn't fully remove the past gel. at this point I asked her to stop. she said I'm not going to argue with you. I told her I wasn't arguing, just questioning how I could get my nails done almost every 2 weeks and her technique is so different from everyone else there. I had her remove the polish, went to another salon where they fully removed it, completed my manicure and won a new customer. read more

I went here a few months ago to treat my sister and myself to mani & pedis. The tech wasn't giving her a pedicure and went straight to painting her toenails. I asked if she was going to soak her feet and do the rest of the pedicure and she told me that I shouldn't ask questions and should let people do their job. That was the last time I ever went there. So far I have had very good experiences with the lady technicians. I have brought my daughters with me and the basic manicures are fair. For me, the shellac generally lasts me 2 weeks. Affordable. Not quite sure what has happened to this place but when I go for a mani and pedi I don't expect to hold a bowl of water in my lap while my feet soak and have my nails done while in the Pedi chair. I also don't plan on getting my cuticles shredded and my toe cut and only offered a "sorry". Last 2 times I've been it's been bad service. They now have lost a customer and it's not a one off. A friend also complained about the same level of service and she won't go back either. Too many other places with better recommendations to give them another try. The guy at the front needs to stop taking his little naps and figure out why they are loosing customers. I also noticed some of the techs have left too. read more

This place is phenomenal. I have tried nail salons all over Livonia, Northville, Canton, Plymouth, etc. and this one tops them all! (the prices are great, too!) Most importantly - they DO NOT reuse slippers or toe separators anymore, and Kevin, the new owner, is renovating the entire salon! It is way more open and inviting than before. I have gotten shellac here multiple times, and their technique is excellent. Other salons will let the shellac overlap the cuticle area and the skin beside the nail, but the technicians at Great Lakes take extra care, making sure that does not happen! I have been so impressed with this salon, I will not go anywhere else. I recently got a full-set of acrylics at Great Lakes Nails. I am quite picky about acrylics; I don't like thick or wide-square nails. So I showed the technician a picture of what I wanted my nails to look like and he did it perfectly. I was pleasantly surprised. This place really is great. My nails last for weeks, and they are always so accommodating. I hope they keep it up, because I am a customer for life! read more

Vivian is the best! She has done a dip manicure twice for me now. She hand paints on the dip, which I have never seen before. She is meticulous and makes sure my nails are perfect. She noticed my nails were thin and took extra care to make them strong while we wait for them to grow out. She asked questions as she went to make sure I knew what different services cost and that she knew which shape and length I wanted. I would steal clear of this establishment. The word dirty came to mind every 5 seconds while I was here. You're kidding me right? Went to Great Lakes with my sis in hopes of chilling on our "girls day out..." For a Monday in January, this place was pretty packed! So.. we tell the lady we both would like a pedicure.. she motions for us to sit in the chairs. After about 5-10 minutes, with the removal of our socks and shoes, the water still had not yet been turned on. I had to interrupt one of the men to turn our water on and add the "bubbles". For all of the yelpers out there who have had a genuine pedicure.. you know from start to finish it takes about 20-40 minutes, depending on where you go and the "tech" you have.. Well.. in this case, not only did it take her a measly 5 minutes to cut, file, and polish my toes, I had to instruct her to basically nip away at the unsightly cuticles.. She advised me that she was "not done". Huh? But you are polishing my toes.. Whatever, I thought...but then the same thing happened with my sister. She even used the same friggin utensils on my sisters feet as she did mine.. YUCK!!! So then we are asked to go to the drying station. As my sister and I are sitting and chatting for 20 minutes, I notice that not only did the same lady use the same utensils as she did on my sister and I, but another woman who came in for a pedicure. I have looked at my toes for the last several months to see if I have any fungus or disease... so far so good! I wish I could give this place ZERO stars! :) read more

Today was one of the worst experiences I have ever had at any establishment. I have been to this nail salon at least a 1/2 dozen times before today, and found it OK, it was in a convenient location so I would go back from time to time. After my experience today, I will not return, and I will also be filing a complaint. My mom and I had been at a different nail salon waiting for our appointment. We were told it was going to be an additional hour wait, so I decided to call around to other salons to see if we could get in elsewhere. I called Great Lakes and the American man who works there (Tim, I believe) answered the phone. I asked him straight forward "I need a full set and a manicure, is there a wait if we come right now?" He put me on hold for a second to check, and said. "We can get you right in in about 15 minutes." (which was 1:45 PM) So we proceeded to head over to Great Lakes. When we arrived we found a lobby full of other customers waiting. I was optimistic, maybe they had all just showed up? But that was not the case. When the clock hit 2PM, I was starting to get frustrated. We asked him directly: "Why would you say you can fit us right in if there is clearly a wait for services?" and we were ignored. At 2:15, I was directed to go sit in a chair. However, that was just to allow space for others who continued to enter the salon and were quoted 15 to 20 minute wait times. About 10 minutes later, I was told to move chairs and an employee (perhaps Tim's wife?) who was visibly frustrated and busy finally began to work on me. We were sitting at the very front of the store. My mom sat next to me, soaking her nails to remove the gel polish she currently had on. I don't think salon's are supposed to use those jars with the sponges in them to remove polish (like you get at the drug store for home use) because of sanitary purposes, but they were using them today. I was planning on getting a full set of acrylic nails. The employee who was working on me cut down my real nails with little care, and then began to glue on the tips for my acrylics. The employee who was working on me then asked the American man, Tim, to remove the polish and begin working on my mom's nails. My mom and I both looked at each other ... and I immediately asked directly to Tim again, "Are you a licensed manicurist?" and he responded "No, I am not". WTF! My mom refused to let him work on her nails- for obvious reasons. We again asked why we were quoted no wait time and the man has the nerves to say, " I knew I shouldn't have told you to come in." At about this time, my tips were all glued on (she had not worked on my cuticles, or done any of the usual nail prep) and the woman working on me pulled out a pair of dull scissors - not nail scissors or clippers, these looked like scrap booking scissors and began to cut down my tips when she nicked one of my fingers. She was obviously rushing through my service and not following protocol for proper nail procedures. We were appalled and I could not continue to sit there and allow them to work on me. We left the salon, me with broken tips on all my fingers and my mom with half removed polish, and we will never EVER go back due to the illegal and rude employees at this salon. read more

Shawn and Jenny hands down do the best job, I always see Jenny personally as of a couple months ago. I get the gel nails and I get them really thin... My nails have been on for a month! Yes they are crazy grown out but they are still in tact and no chipped at all and again thin! As for the pedicures I go to anyone who will take a walk-in and I occasionally have problems but nothing that would stop me from coming here. I would steer clear of designs though... I always get a shellac manicure and it always looks beautiful! The shellac really lasts. My nails usually just outgrow the manicure before it ever chips. On the one time when I broke a nail 2 days after my manicure, causing the polish to chip, they re-did that nail at no charge.
