Perhaps other items are better on this menu .. but the shrimp ceviche was old and tasteless. I couldn't imagine why it be ok to serve a rotten avocado. I took one bite and decided to leave. Not the best vibe either

Good tacos with lots of protein options. I love the al pastor and carnitas occasionally adding a chicken to mix it up. I normally order the soft tacos. Delicious salsa bar options. The roasted Chipotle always makes its' way onto my tacos. The red salsas are fantastic and pair perfectly with the fresh tortilla chips. Great Mex was one of my dad's favorite places for tacos. The original location in Balboa right by the pier. The food is the same at the Costa Mesa location and I don't have to fight the peninsula traffic. The major downside to this location is that the parking lot has tiny spaces and very few spots so parking is always a challenge. But the tacos are well worth the effort. Beer on tap and bottles available. The Balboa location has margaritas, I'm not sure about the Costa Mesa restaurant. Taco Tuesday is a big hit and the prices are very reasonable. Service is always very friendly in my experience. Cheerful register attendants take your order and give you your drinks. Find a seat and they'll bring your food to the table. Outdoor seating is available in Costa Mesa, Balboa has big windows that face the sidewalk which are open in nice weather. They offer catering services which I haven't tried but am confident would be quality considering everything else that I have had at Great Mex. Family friendly restaurants where you will see diners of ages 2 to 82. Often with several generations of families enjoying meals together.

Okay here we go!!! Swung by this place on our way out of town after visiting some of the most amazing Yelpers that I've ever met (you know who you are ;)). Anyway - super solid little taqueria! I really just wanted a breakfast burrito, cuz that's basically the only thing that anyone ever need. Tasted fantastic, but as my girl Chella pointed out, "does it come with all the meats?" And noooooo!! No they do not. Mann must choose only one protein :( Man, don't you remember when all the meat used to flow like the rivers of Babylon? Now that everything sucks, the meats only flow like the Colorado River (it's bad). I say this for you. I don't really care, cuz I'm supposed to be vegetarian, so I'm chillin' ^________^

I've never been greeted here with anything less than a big smile. The Staff are always friendly and the food does not disappoint. Taco Tuesdays get a bit crowded but, they handle it proper - no extra long waits or crazy long lines. My kids love the crispy ground beef tacos, My wife loves their tamales, and I'm a big fan of the California burrito - sooo good. read more

Everything we've gotten here has been great, and we've been coming for many years. We especially like their carnitas taco salad, and their mushroom tacos and shrimp tacos are a real treat. 10/10 best fish burrito I have ever had. I can't speak on any of the other food here because I only ever order the fish burrito. The sauce is so good. Love that it comes with some guac on the side. It also comes with chip and endless salsa from their salsa bar. I've been to all their locations and they are just so consistent. I first stumbled upon them on Balboa Island but I found out they have multiple locations. I will still drive miles for them. So good. They are so quick with orders. Very casual grab and go spot or sit and enjoy your food in. I like to take the burrito to go and eat at the beach. read more

Im a vegan, so I was elated to walk by and see they were selling vegan tamales! I ordered half a dozen ($15, a fair price). And they were great! I always say a bad tamal is one thats dry, but these were moist. Inside were veggies like corn, peas, and maybe potato? Nonetheless, delicious. My only suggestion would be to try including soy chorizo inside to give it a more familiar texture and to help hold the veggies together. Overall would recommend! read more

Came through and picked up a huevos rancheros plate and a mushroom taco. Also got a couple fried jalapenos. Mushroom taco was really good. Stuffed and delicious. This place sucks ! The carne asada looks like cheap beef. I complained and they said it's what they have. The bathroom is dirty and you literally have to stick your hand in the soap dispenser and scoop the soap out because it doesn't work. This place is so ran down and it sucks!!!! read more

This is our absolute go to for quick Mexican food. I've never been to the actual location, but we order delivery at least once or twice a week. My favorite breakfast dish they make is the huevos ranchero, it's addicting and I usually don't even like breakfast. For lunch and dinner, their crunchy tacos are awesome, burritos are solid too. Also try the carnitas plate, also another gem. read more

The staff working today 11/6 at 11 A.M. was rude!! The girl on the til was rude and the chef was not accommodating when I asked for chilaquiles with salsa on the side. The girl and him and the other short chick gave me attitude. I've been to other great Mex by Harbor and the service is better. Friendlier staff. These people were horrible. We will never use them again ... their food is marginal and twice we tried them for take out, twice they screwed up the order. This last time they left off the burrito we went there for (a fajita burrito). The people responsible for this have only one fricking thing to do; take the order and package it up ... and they can't even do that right. So the owner can sleep well knowing we'll never do business with them again, and he knows who to thank for that. There's a lot of good, even great Mexican take out places ... spend your money there. read more

Ordered a machaca breakfast burrito to go this morning. Let me start by saying Del Taco breakfast burritos puts this to shame. The burrito was mostly egg and tortilla, there was barely any meat or anything else inside. Also a pretty small burrito. The biggest no no was the salsa verde it came with was gelatinous!! My boyfriend and I are here literally at least once a week. I don't know what they put in their salsa but it's amazing highly recommend the roasted. Their shrimp tacos are awesome and they have the best taco Tuesday deal in town. Every Tuesday and Friday and it has a discount on beers as well. This place is really yummy, taco Tuesday is a super great deal and I usually get tacos for my crew at work. The service here is not the best, I'm not sure that the Management offers very much customer service to the staff because I have to tell you I'm a really good customer and I've been treated kind of poorly over the years. However, every time I've been treated poorly there's always a time I'm not so I'm not gonna reduce my opinion, this is a five star place that I really like. If you want a really good crispy beef taco then come pay this place a visit and check it out. If you're calling in for takeout make sure you know what location you're calling because I have witnessed several times people show up to pick up there to go order and they accidentally called the other great mixed grill on Newport Boulevard. read more

We DoorDash Great Mex a lot. EVERYTHING is good here! Our favorites short list consists of ceviche, taquitos, machaca and eggs plate, their guacamole and their refried beans! We've had other menu items, but these are the staples! I choose to leave my review today because the Asst. Manager Andres went above and beyond!! We always get excellent customer service, but today was exceptional and made my day. We wanted extra flour tortillas, which aren't on the DoorDash menu, so we always call in and have them added. Today Andres waived the fee, and I jokingly said, it's my birthday today, is that why you're throwing them in? He said no, but happy birthday! When our order arrived, I was pleasantly surprised that he had thrown in a special dessert with a note!!! I just thought that was the nicest thing!! right now they're on taco tuesday every day until lockdown ends !! and while i wasn't in love with the street style tacos their hard shell tacos at this price are 4* worthy all on their own !! we're starting to like hard shell tacos more than soft right now, exception being if the soft tacos are made with handmade tortillas you should definitely come try them while you can; hard shell shredded beef taco -- go go go !! read more

Great Mex makes the best seafood dishes ever. I'm partial to the grilled fish burrito, fried fish taco, and shrimp bowl, but you honestly cannot go wrong. Cheese quesadilla is fire too. They also have an agua fresca machine that I love. read more

I was feeling lazy on a Friday night and didn't feel like cooking or driving. DoorDash was offering a spend $20 get $5 off deal, so I couldn't say no to getting delivery from a local Mexican restaurant that I've never tried before. I got the Chili Rellenos. It came with beans, rice, and complementary chips and salsa. Chili Rellenos was delicious. Big portion. Sauce was tangy and rich. Beans were good. Rice was bland and mushy. Not too impressed. Salsa was FUEGO and delicious. Will be back again to try something new. read more

I went on a Friday night and it was VERY lively! There was a band playing by the bar and it was packed! People were drinking, dancing, hanging out. All of this is happening in a supermarket! I don't remember the names of the places my friend and I ordered food from, but I had a chile relleno burrita, seafood cocktail, and pozole. I've never really had chile relleno, so I decided to just go for it and try something different even though there were other options that were more my preference. It was alright. Good thing it was only $5. The seafood cocktail was delicious! They did not skimp on the seafood and everything in it tasted so fresh. Pozole wasn't terrible, but just like my burrita, it was a bit on the bland side. Maybe my palate skews too heavily towards salty, but I felt like a little salt here and there would've really improved the flavors in everything we ordered. Overall the quality/freshness was there! Regarding the market part, nothing special. Maybe a little more selection than your typical Northgate, especially in the liquor department. Their wall of tequila was impressive. During my recent visit, Wendy at cashier station 5 on 6.13.2026 at around 7:30pm provided extremely disrespectful service and openly stated that she did not care enough to learn the pricing codes while scanning items. This raises concerns about pricing accuracy, not only for me but for other loyal customers as well. Fortunately, the employee assisting with bagging demonstrated far more professionalism and took the initiative to correct the mistakes caused by Wendy's lack of attention and concern. I hope management addresses this issue, as customers deserve courteous service and confidence that they are being charged accurately.

It came in a super big, shareable portion which I loved. Lastly the spicy vodka rigatoni, very solid pasta, I liked how it was cooked all dente, not overcooked. Came very hot as well which I loved. It was a solid pasta, but nothing too crazy. Overall the service was great, I love how quick the service was. The ambience was lovely, you can come here to catch up with friends, or have a nice study session, or a cute date spot! The food was solid, but I would say if u come here definitely get the poke bowl! Super delicious and fresh!! Highly recommend you try this spot!

Used to go to the Balboa Island location, but switched to this one because of location. Used to come here pretty regularly. The food was great. Shrimp Quesadillas were soo yummy. Just the right combination of shrimp, cheese, mushrooms, onions, and flavors. Other favorites include the Carnitas, Carnes Asada fries, enchiladas, and chimichangas. Great flavors, nice serving sizes, and good prices. Lately,.... though, the food seems to be flavored really salty... I don't know why. I thought it was a fluke... when I ordered the Shrimp Quesdallias recently, and I couldn't even finish it. Way too salty.. I told my hubby, but he thought it was just a one time thing.. A couple of weeks later, my hubby & his friend, brought some food for take-out. This time my hubby noticed his food was really salty... and the funny thing was my order.. didn't have any flavor at all... no salt or anything.. Really bland. Since then we haven't gone back.. :( Giving this place 3 stars... an average between the 4 I would have given the very first time I ate here and the 2 from recent experience. I love good Mexican food. Great Mex makes good Mexican food. Whenever I go to a new Mexican food place (and I am by no means 'new' to Great Mex) I always always always order a bean and cheese burrito. If they can do a bean and cheese right, then I move on to more exotic dishes...like a carnitas burrito or an enchilada (very exotic ;P). So, the B&C was delicious. MMmmmmm...getting hungry just thinking about it. Like I said, their food is good. I would especially recommend the fresh guacamole they prepare fresh daily. I'm giving them 4 out of 5 stars because I think they are a little too pricey compared to Albertos or other similar restaurant. I don't understand why everyone is acting like they have such great taco Tuesday deals. Their taco Tuesday specials are tacos for $2.50 each - which is the same price, and even pricier than the normal a la cart taco costs. The Mexican taco is normally $2.25 - but it's listed as $2.50 on taco Tuesday. So how is this a "great deal"? I mean the tacos were okay - I've had better and I've had worse. But I went to get a good taco Tuesday deal - and paying $2.50 per taco not only wasn't a good deal, it was even more expensive than usual for some of the taco options. Just thought I'd let everyone know since all these reviews keep claiming that tacos are $1.25 or $1.50 on taco Tuesday. read more

I love this place! I bought 3 delicious tacos, and 1 beer, and it was under $5, and there is a $5 minimum on cards, so what is a guy to do? Well, the guy at the register suggests I get another beer-Alight! You don't have to convince me to buy another $1 dratf beer! So at $5.44 I am one happy camper. The only thing I was bummed about was the the obvious lack of seating-Great Mex is tiny, but so are most taco spots. I guess thats the beauty of it, you really can see the success of the restaurant, and all the locals who come out for the infamous Taco Tuesday feeding frenzy. I have never had a better shrimp quesadilla. Now that I think about it. I have never had a shrimp quesadilla. Theirs are the best. They saute the shrimp in butter and serve with mushrooms in a gooey cheesy quesadilla with a big side of guacamole. The only comment is that they need to make a better pico de gallo. I love this place! Not one item on the menu has ever disappointed me. I recommend the al pastor, whether it be on a tostada, quesadilla, or taco. Great Max is our go-to for our weekly Mexican dinner! It's delicious, fresh, and the service is always polite. The bean and cheese burritos are my favorite, as are the veggie nachos!
