I needed some bolts and when I went to pay my debit card was declined, ok, maybe I missed pin, tried again, same. I checked bank balance, all good, went to bank got cash with same card and went back. I place 20 on counter and mentioned that I think their credit card machine was the problem because I had gotten gas just before and got cash just after. I said there was plenty of money in the account and it's strange that their machine declined it. The young clerks response was "if that's what you say". I paused, looked at him and said what the f$&@ did you just say. He then said you can't swear at me like that. I said you just f&$@ing insulted me, I will say whatever I want in response when you say shit like that. He then said leave the store you can't buy anything here if you are going to sweat at me. The bolts were 2.50, I said I'm taking them and there is nothing you can do to stop me because I am leaving a 20 on the counter and you can keep the change. He then said don't ever come back here. Of course I said I wouldn't and also said some choice things to this a$$hat as I left. Basically, if you want to be treated like dirt, this is the place to go. No store employee should ever say something like that to a customer. It has been a very long time since anyone said anything that insinuatingly insulting to me. Edited to add that I had always been treated very well by everyone here before this and have been a regular customer since I moved to the area last year. The owner and other employees have always been polite and helpful, sadly because of this guy I will never return :( read more

Good, fairly well-stocked, clean place with solid savvy from all staff. Everyone's super-friendly and helpful. And they have everything you need for a neighborhood hardware store. Everyone's got great communication skills and this really adds to their value. Probably a high rent so a few things may be a little pricey. Yet you can buy things like screws that you can only buy by the pack at Home Depot. Reiko is a delight. Albert knows a thing or two about electrical wiring and has good knowledge of construction. I'd call this the only real hardware store on that street. There's another Variety-Hardware store up the street -- if you like using 99 cent brushes. Great Wall has a minimum credit card purchase amount. It sells candy bars and is near a gas station, a post office, a noodle place, a fish place, a sax place (believe it or not), a good coffee shop, and other businesses. I have had the good fortune and luxury of visiting the Great Wall of China and was drawn by the name of this bright, clean little store. Now I like visiting this Great Wall too! It's actually bigger inside and has a good stock of lumber. Languages spoken: Mostly English, Japanese, Cantonese and (I think) Mandarin. read more

Having visited most if not all the hardware stores in the Sunset I believe if you want superior customer service this is a local jewel. While the store may be small in comparison to your local Ace Hardware, what they lack in size they more than make up for in professional and knowledge. They don't stock exotic items, rather they stock what your typical DIY'er needs. I have gone there three times in the last two weeks and on each trip not only was the staff incredibly helpful but they had exactly what I needed, even to a small $0.24 set screw I lost during a project. Great little local business right off of the L. Came here not too long ago to get some duct tape and a tape measurer. Everything was easy to find, just got pointed in the right direction and blammy, there was everything I needed. I also ended up buying a broom, it was less than $2 - sounds good to me. I misplaced the phone number for Great Wall and so I yelped it. I'm so delighted to see all the good reviews about it and the praise for Albert is certainly deserved. I've not been to the hardware store, I live in North Beach, but we're lucky in this building to have a landlord savvy enough to give us Albert and his crew for repairs etc. I can't say enough about how comfortable I feel with him and his crew. They recently rebuilt the back stairs of our building and I just left my backdoor open so they could come in for a drink of water or to use the washroom. They are just a really fabulous group of workers. Albert is always right on target, returning calls and providing excellent customer service. Great Wall Hardware has to be the best hardware store in the universe. I regularly find better stuff there in their relatively small space than I do at the ridiculously large but still crappy Home Depot. And these guys know their stuff - unlike the big box stores, you can ask questions and get real knowledgeable answers that are based in reality. I especially like the weekend crew, always upbeat, friendly and willing to help. I'm in there a lot and they call me by name, which is a kick-ass personal touch. albert! our experience at your great little store has been fairly positive over the years. we love the communal vibe, the mom-n-pop energy and entrepreneurial spirit. not today though. we just called, saturday sept 25 to be greeted by a gruff guy 'aldin.' off-putting that he did not state his name. i had to ask him. so what, sorta. but then when i asked him how he was doing today (we were raised by polite, respective people), he got even more gruff. eww. i guess we were bothering him. he said that the store was busy today, thanks to customers like my family and community, so he had to 'cut to the chase.' hmmm ... a bit ugly. if the 'chase' means chasing longtime customers away, then he is doing a great job. given your community leadership (a chronicle favourite we love it!), we were surprised that one of your staff is conducting himself in the polar opposite manner. do we really need to be exposed to rude behaviour by yet another cave man? not really. i guess those dollars of ours, far fewer than yesterday for sure, will go to AMZ for what we need today. read more

This is literally the best hardware store I've been to. I just moved into the neighborhood and made several visits to this place in the last month. Everyone here is very friendly and helpful. Riley is very knowledgeable and willing to help you find anything you need. Sometimes I walk in here just to browse around because they have a wide selection of nick nacks. I'm a sugar for gadgets. I really like this place. Admittedly, if I need a pile of lumber or ordinary stupid whatever materials, I go to Home Cheapo even though I don't like it. But this place, I like. It's a real neighborhood place. They had exactly the right screws I needed, just like they always do. And I like the family that runs it; all very smart and knowledgable. The mom is mostly retired now - I miss her, an awesome lady, I always hope she might be working if I go in. Her daughter really knows hardware too. She could probably be a model if she wanted to, but I think she likes being involved in the family business. Came in here on a Saturday to purchase parts to fix my toilet. The staff here were very attentive and helpful. I was advised on what parts I needed to fix my leaky toilet, including the type of screws I needed, and so forth. The staff were very knowledgeable, and this store had everything that I needed. Update 3/20/2019- I used to love this place, spending hundreds of dollars over the years because I like to give businesses in the hood my business BUT my last two encounters with Great Wall have been bad. I bought a couple of locks for doors in my house but my wife wanted another color so I went back to exchange, literally getting to the door at 3.01, while clerk was locking the door, explained I just wanted to exchange for different color and he said some nonsense like " already closed register". OK Eisenstein it's an even exchange, no money, grab a different color, take mine and it's done in 30 seconds. Gave the guy benefit of doubt and went back today, telling the clerk I didn't want money back but wanted to exchange towards price of some other stuff and guy said he couldn't exchange towards other stuff because I lost receipt. Please it has your store sticker with price and both are less than 8 bucks. I've been in retail for years and this isn't how you treat old customers, especially one that's been a loyal customer since 2007. I gave guy both locks and told him to sell them to someone who needs them because I didn't want to put them down in my garage for years. I won't give them any of my business but do like the person i usually deal with, he might be owner, retired from USAF and really nice guy. I'm an ex USMC and we've had conversations about the military. Ive exchangeD items before without a receipt so seems like it depends on who's working if they'll exchange. I even told guy i was going to spend $40-50 dollars so I'd like to exchange at which he replied he couldn't do it. Good Luck Great Wall for losing a good customer and business today. This store has pretty much everything you need for your handyman needs plus more. The products are very high quality and reasonably priced. It's so much easier to go here first to find what I need instead of going straight to home depot. PLUS, they sharpen knives in less than 24 hours (typically), and there's not a lot of places that do that in the city. Long story short this place kills it because of its great staff, quality products, price point, and selection. read more

I come here once in a while. They are okay. Today I went in to get some keys made for my rental unit. The three originals were the same chrome color but had different designs. After I got home I realized the copies were all made from the same type of blanks. So I called and the guy wasn't very helpful. He admitted they had at least one additional type of blanks - brass ones - but blamed me for not requesting different blanks. Really you want me to tell you how to do your job properly? It's just a few lousy dollars and it wouldn't kill you to offer some new keys made for free to rectify the situation would it? Oh then I was put on hold or hung up on I don't know which. Next time maybe I will go to the Ace hardware on Noriega (between 32nd and 33rd). P.S. the littlest brown paper bags that you put a few nails nuts and bolts in - they'll cost you10 cents each here. read more

Customer service here is the best! Regardless if you are only buying some inexpensive nails or screws they treat you like family. Better--because they are patient with your needs and so knowledgeable. Every time I have a DYI project they give great advice. Albert also has a construction company as well. Insanely helpful, went out of there way to help out with a problem involving a product I did not even buy there. The employees went at it for about 10 minutes and finally fixed my problem ( basically took a part a tub spout to remove a threaded part stuck in there). I appreciate your help! This place is pretty small, but they seem to have almost all the basic go-to items you often find you forgot to get in order to complete a project. They also had a padlock style that Home Depot does not carry, but which I needed in a hurry. Will definitely stop by here first when I need tools before driving elsewhere. Staff is friendly and helpful. They even knew what I wanted when all I could describe what I was looking for was "that paper plate looking thing that you use to cover the gas vent hole in the wall." Not only is this place your friendly neighborhood hardware store - Albert, the owner, is a licensed contractor - and his service is impeccable. A year ago....I had a central heating unit installed in my house, and an exterior door installed in my tunnel entrance. I interviewed and received estimates from 6 contractors before I finally picked Albert. He spent over an hour with me - and explained everything in detail to make sure I understood the process involved in installing and purchasing the right type of central heating unit. He was so nice...I really didn't expect this kind of customer service anymore. The other contractors took a quick look at the house and gave me a verbal estimate within 20 minutes. Albert sent his detailed written statement within 2 days of our meeting. I gave Albert my house keys so that he and his staff had in and out access. They arrived every morning at 8:00am and left by 5:00pm. Every night when I came home from work...the place was immaculate. The project was completed in one week....just as Albert had estimated. I was so impressed with this company's workmanship and work ethics that I now use their services for everything. They do everything from investigating bathroom leaks. painting, to building new homes. Very nice store, but don't ever get your keys made there. I took in my VW key to have a copy made. They couldn't make the copy, but somehow, while trying to make a "mechanical key" (which is of absolutely no use to me), they managed to erase the old key, probably because they put it next to something magnetic. They claimed they didn't do anything, but I couldn't start my car afterwards (car kept telling me "key not in range"), and I had to take the old key to a VW dealer to get it fixed. read more

We called them to look for some dowels. At first, they told us that they didn't have the size that we wanted and we have to pay extra cutting fee if we want them, so we told them "okay we're gonna go somewhere else". 3 minutes later, they called us back and said that they found the right size for the dowels that we needed. Nice place! So different from a big impersonal hardware store. Me walking in to a hardware store is like a big uncouth man walking into Victoria's Secret--we don't belong. The nice man offered his assistance right away and knew what I was talking about and led me to the product, which wasn't overpriced. I was in and out within a couple of minutes. Nice! Better than driving 10 minutes to Home Depot, parking, walking, walking UP and DOWN aisle after longass aisle, and getting in line behind 10 people to pay. Nice laid back Chinese American fella. I recently moved into a new house, and had Great Wall Hardware to take care of some repairs. Albert fixed a leaky faucet in my bathroom, replaced the bathroom vanity cabinet, fixed the dryer exhaust vent, and repainted the walls.
