We are new to the area and are searching for our go to Chinese restaurant. This might be it! The ambiance is pleasant, the service is friendly and the food is really good. We got Salt/Pepper Shrimp (no shell), Szechuan Beef and another dish I can't remember because my husband ate all of it...the lunch specials come with a tasty soup. The fried rice/chow mein that comes with the lunch specials are OK - I would like more vegetables in those dishes but they were fine. My little family and I came here last night since we were staying nearby at Casa Munras. The plates are generous so two entrees, an appetizer and a small soup (which feeds four) is fit for two adults and 2 small children. We got three entrees so we brought back leftovers, a little of all three. We ordered: 1. Szechuan Green beans with shrimp entree (WOW amazing flavor, server recommended it) 2. Combination B: General's chicken, Kung Pow chicken, fried rice, one egg roll and small egg flower soup 3. Small egg flower soup family style 4. Shrimp dumplings (4 pieces) 5. She helped us to customize a fried tofu dish to have the honey walnut sauce and nuts... a favorite of mine at other Chinese places... honey walnut tofu. This is my second time to Great Wall Restaurant, the staff was extremely nice even with a full house. There were plenty of regulars and new customers and they all were treated with respect and care as they ordered drinks and food. Our waiter was attentive and apologized for the delay which in reality was only 15 minutes before our delicious food arrived. This is still, hands down, 100% the best Chinese food in Monterey County. Every time I come back to Monterey I have to stop here once or twice. I think it's the only place south of the Bay Area that still has the classic old school Chinese chefs still making it the same way. Salt and pepper wings, Mongolian beef, and for some reason the only place that makes rock solid wonton soup every time. Solid Chinese and Szechuan food. Standard and comprehensive menu. Good service. I really enjoyed my tofu and mushrooms over brown rice. The sizzling rice soup was also very good, albeit a little underdone (the rice was a little bit hard). My husband's Szechuan shrimp was yummy -- a little too spicy for me, but that's the way it's supposed to come. Prices are decent. Nothing too outrageous. Stayed at the hotel abrego across the street so the Great Wall was the most convenient choice after our LONG drive from Ventura Co!! It was rather busy though they sat us fairly quickly, just to wait a Very long time to get an order taken!! This place Rocks! Love the fried rice the shrimp fried rice was so good. I tried the shrimp fried rice with pork too but the pork was not that great or maybe it was just so tiny. You couldn't taste it but the shrimp fried rice was absolutely delicious. Also, their fried chicken wings are really, really good, I'm looking forward to trying more items. This is a family favorite! All time to go chinese! The Mongolian beef is great! Our all time fave is the salt and pepper wings! There are so crunchy and flavorful! W/ the fried jalapenos for that extra kick is great! They also have brown rice option which is nice as you do not see that often. Chow mien is also a go to as it has flavor and sauce to it. Maybe it's because we went on Christmas Day. Waited forever for service. They had only two wait staff working the entire restaurant. When we finally got the food it was not overwhelming at all. The shrimp was still translucent and uncooked. Fried rice was not fried, etc. The list goes on... Food was not eatable and had to take it home to finish cooking. Asked to have it cooked longer. Was coming home from a gig in Pebble Beach and the wife asked for dinner. We hadn't been to Great Wall since we lived in Monterey and I was happy to find it unchanged b still the best Chinese food in the area. Sure we only had the most basic Chow Mein and Fried Rice with Fried Wantons, but they were really , really good! Noodles were not gummy and really delicious, Rice had a deep flavor that I totally enjoyed -even the next day. Tea was ordered and it was hot. Good start. Then the problems started to arise. My stepdad goes to wipe soup off his mouth-- gum in the napkin. To make matters worse, our server didn't seem to care. The restaurant was within walking distance from the hotel where we were staying. My husband walked over with our order: szeczhuan green bean chicken and Kung Pao chicken, an order of steamed rice (does not accompany meals, is $2.25 extra) , and an order of egg rolls. Total $55.00. Eggs rolls were excellent, and they gave a small container of duck (?) sauce. Now both entrees were noted as spicy (one pepper). My green beans and chicken ...bland, no spice, the green beans were stir fried close to perfection, but were so greasy that had there been any spice, it probably slid off , taking any flavor with it. The chicken, if you could find it among the beans, was very tender, again bland. My husband's Kung Pao chicken did have a modicum of heat, but not until the end where the three peppers lay. Not saying they used fillers, maybe they were just trying to ensure the dinner guest got their veggies, but the zucchini and carrots were a surprise in the Kung Pao. The carrots were done right though. For $55.00 the order included two packets of soy sauce, no hot mustard, two fortune cookies, and the plates were Dixie paper CAKE plates, not the most sturdy, I would have overlooked that but for the tasteless meals. What upsets me most is they "respectfully decline any changes to the meals". So no, I would not go back there, nor would I recommend it to anyone.. read more
